Title: Algetty, the Neglected Village
Post by: Thought on February 19, 2010, 11:52:01 am
"Probitas laudatur... et alget"

That phrase means "Uprightness is praised... and neglected," in Latin at least. It is "alget" that seems to be interesting here. Unfortunately I have yet to come across the infinitive of that verb, but it looks like the plural imperative of it might be "algete."

Algetty is a village of neglected humans, so it seems likely its name might have been taken from this somewhat famous Latin saying.

Fascinating! Glancing at the Retranslation, it seems it was named "Algetty" even in the Japanese version. I guess it would have been pronounced "Aru-getty" in the original version though.

Ah yes, here we go. Algere, a 2nd conj. verb meaning "to be cold, to be neglectged." Algetty is both. And, based on CC's Angelus Errare, it would seem that someone in Square knew a smattering of Latin.

Yeah, the difference is Angelus Errare only existed in US version, I think it is only to make Guile's origin more mysterious.

However, after a google search, the results lead me to Algethi.

Ah, good point about AE. But what about Termina? Thats the Latin word for boundary stone (and also the Roman Goddess of Boundaries).

Very interesting. I tried exploring some possible alternate derivations, but I didn't come up with anything that stood out. You may have stumbled onto a wonderful little bit of Chrono trivia.

Sorry. Trivium!

Good find. Perhaps it could be added to the encyclopedia page: http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Algetty.html

right now it states that the name is a fabrication with no etymology.
