Title: Games you LOVE and remember from the 80s to mid 90s
Post by: TriforceofEternity on December 11, 2009, 10:56:34 pm
The Golden era!

What games do you remember from the early 80s to the middle 90s before the 3D war and the meaning of hardcore gaming changed?

My favorites were from the top of my head and I'll start with the good ol Commodore 64:

Tink Tonk Series by Mercer Meyer and Sprout:

Tink Tonk and the land of buddy bot: *Adventure/Edudainment*

Tink Tonk  Goes to Town:   Adventure/Edutainment

Super PipeLine 2 C64  *shoot em up/Action*

Unspeakable Violence:  *Blow em up/Action*

King Tut's Tomb:

A collection of mini-games where all I remember is one of the mini games there a haunted house/mansion  you had to navigate thru and if you go/wind up at a dead-end you come up to a ghost which I think kills you but I was very young like 5 and didn't understand what to do so I dont' remember the rules of that game.     :(

Another mini game you had to collection diamonds in this pyramid where you are running and there are bad guys after you or something:

    I only understood simple games.

Another C64 game was a 3d pyramid maze which was MUCH more slower paced and you had to go/walk to the top of it and I can't remember why but I was fascinated with the graphics as it was above average and the mazes where long with alternate paths and traps.

Edit: If you went outside of the pyramid you could see an airplane and explore outside a little bit

I'll explain more later which may not be till after this weekend if we wind up with a major ice/freezing rain storm here in Oregon and have the electricity cut:  :(

PS:  Does anyone know anything about the King Tut's Tomb games that were in it?

Game Boy Tetris!

Although technically I didn't first play it until the '90s.

I suppose I'll only be able to fit the first five years of my life into your timeline, so Chrono Trigger has to be the obvious first, for obvious reasons. Starcraft grabs a high spot on the list by default, though that's more late 90's. Other than that, I have no conscious memory of playing games in that timeframe.

Mega Man II. First game I ever rented once I got a Nintendo I think. Ah man, Friday nights were Mega Man II & mastaccioli night back then. The sweetness of those memories almost bring a tear to my eye.

Somehow I completely missed the "to mid-90s" in the title. That makes a whole world of difference. You've not heard the last of Lord J on this topic!

Anyone else play The Battle of Olympus for the NES? I'm almost convinced I was the only one.

I remember getting my SNES, it was 2nd-hand and came with two controllers and a ton of games, including Star Fox... can barely remember the others, it had uhhh some Streets of Rage-esque game and... and... Shaq Fu... which is a terrible fucking game. I later got Super Mario World, A Link to the Past and Yoshi's Island, THOSE were the days.

Super Mario World. Cliched, I'm sure, but still hellah good.

Jurassic Park and Streets of Rage on the Sega Genesis, which I just re-got-into recently, thanks to the power of emulation.

Earthworm Jim for the SNES, Chrono Trigger, of course.

You aren't; that game is fantastic! I hope they put it on the VC soon; my cartridge hasn't been working.

Well, I knew that game only because I heard an awesome remix of it.

Tecmo Super Bowl ranks as notable one from my history. One of the first sports titles to feature a lot of things which are commonplace nowadays: league and player's association licenses (real teams and players), substitutions, stat tracking, fluctuating player conditions & injuries, and customizable playbooks, just to name a few.

Friggin' Neal Anderson. Him and his damned Bears offensive line.  :x

I don't agree that the 80's to mid 90 were the best time for gameing but its is easy to think that when two of the greatest games of all time came out then: X-COM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-COM:_UFO_Defense) and M.U.L.E. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.L.E.)

A game from the early 90's that I spent a lot of my childhood on is the first Wario Land for the Game Boy.
I spent a lot of time getting all the treasures in the game, and eventually I got 100%, but sadly soon after the battery in the cartadge died and the game erased all my files. But I bought a used copy of it back in 2005 that works great.

Mine would have to be...

Super Mario Bros. (and subsequently, Duck Hunt)

Tetris

MegaMan

Vector Man

MegaMan VII

Zombies Ate My Neighbor

Altered Beast

Super Mario RPG

Just to name the most memorable ones for me.  If I can think of any others, I'll post them.
