Title: Did you ever cry while playing the games?
Post by: Sajainta on October 06, 2009, 07:04:32 pm
I certainly did, mostly during CC.  I cried a little when Belthasar died in CT (all he wanted to do was go home :(.  Plus, that music is SO DAMN SAD!).

And then the new DS ending...  .

I was an absolute wreck during CC.  Lucca's letter?  Entire ending of the game?  Yeah, I was bawling my eyes out.

That's one of the many reasons why the Chrono games are my favourite games of all time.  I love a lot of video games, but none of them have moved me to the point of tears, let alone to the point of I-can-hardly-breathe-gulping-for-air wailing that I was doing during CC.  You know a game is good when the characters and events are so powerful that they can evoke such strong feelings.

How about you?  I'm really curious about this.

Sorry.  I find it next to non-existent that I would ever cry during any video game, let alone an RPG.

One would think that I must have a heart of stone and ice in my veins not to feel anything for the loss of these characters during the course of the game, but think about it.

They're electronic constructs in a cartridge/ROM world.  How am I supposed to feel any sadness for them?

Oh, well.  I guess it wouldn't make any sense explaining it, but that's the gist of it.  Sorry. :(

After the ending of Chrono Trigger DS (the Dream's Epilogue ending), I broke down. Seeing Magus rebuffed by the sister he was struggling so hard to rescue and endured decades of darkness to even reach...it was too much.

Along those lines though, movie characters are just images on a screen and book characters are just ink on a page and many people cry during movies and books.  Personally, I can name lots of movies and books that have made me cry.  Or maybe you feel the same way regarding movies and books as you do video games.

And there's no need to apologize.  I don't think your comment makes you cold-hearted.  People experience things in different ways.

After the ending of Chrono Trigger DS (the Dream's Epilogue ending), I broke down. Seeing Magus rebuffed by the sister he was struggling so hard to rescue and endured decades of darkness to even reach...it was too much.

I agree.

Only two franchises have ever brought me close to tears by the storytelling: Rurouni Kenshin, and Chrono Cross.

The orphanage scene in Chrono Cross, to be exact.

Rorouni Kenshin is great.  Which part(s) made you cry?

I didn't cry, but I felt terrible for Shishio. Despite being maniacal, Shishio is very human, and this was enhanced so much by his love with Yumi. He suffered so much incredible pain, and through sheer force of will, overcame it, even with a warped mind. But there was no denying his humanity, as twisted as it was. He still loved, and was loved. I wept inside for him. I loved that couple, and I loved that they both were alive in the Kenshin universe Hell, and that Shishio still had his beautiful ambition.

On the other hand, I have never liked Kenshin (Sanosuke is a much more interesting character), so it pained me to see Kenshin win. I can see Shishio losing to Hiko Seijuro, but Kenshin, come on. And Shishio also had to take on all the other characters, too (including Mr. Aku Soku Zan himself), so it wasn't even a "fair" fight.

No, never. The Radical Dreamers epilogue came the closest for me.

Yes. I can't say how many scenes. Chrono touches me deeply. Crono's death, Crono's revival, CT credits, CTDS Magus loses Schala scene, CC Orphanage, losing Harle, switching places and seeing Kid get screwed over, Robo's happening in CC, I can go on for those games and radical Dreamers as well. And CTCE, don't get me started. In fact I'm sorry but after one particular scene in that, fan made or not, I really didn't like you guys who worked on it. Looking at the majority of my mugshots, not to mention maggiekarp made a comic about it, it should be fairly obvious what scene I'm talking about from there.

When I've said before Chrono brings out all my emotions, I mean everything. Full blown rage, total joy, complete sorrow(bursting into tears uncontrollably), etc. I really feel like I'm there.

Z, that has got to be the most beautiful artwork of Shishio I've ever seen.

To answer your question, Saja The scene where Kenshin leaves for Kyoto and says goodbye to Kaoru, but especially the first scene of the next episode where the two girls wake up and realize that "Uncle Kenny" was gone. Minimized for spoiler reasons, I guess.

Another scene from Chrono Cross, now that I think about it, was the Water Dragon Isle scene. I realize it's fairly close to the burning orphanage part, but the fact that it was all new to me this playthrough(always went straight to Mt. Pyre after Fargo) made it that much more poignant. Moreover, I never had unlocked the Kid scene by doing this.

Hmm, i don't recall, but I think the answer is no. But both RD and CC make me feeling down, like the games are shrouded in dark aura.

The Nadia's Bell scene is always my favorite, I had goose bumps when I read Miguel's dialogues.

This, right here. And I promised myself I wouldn't
Let's see... I tend to tear up during the fall of Zeal scene, and Crono's resurrection. I probably did elsewhere during other scenes, but I just can't remember. The Dream Devourer ending takes the cake as the only one I had to put down the game and find a tissue for.

Neither game has brought me to tears, in fact the only game too would be Planescape: Torment. ALTHOUGH...The scene with Miguel was the closest, especial with Prisoners of Fate playing even during the fight its self.

I never liked Kenshin either.  My favourite character has always been Sano, with Sojiro being a close second.  I did like Shishio and Yumi, although I think I would have liked Shishio more if I wasn't so terrified of Egyptian mummies or anything / anyone that looks like a mummy, heh.

I cried during the episodes that chronicled Sojiro's upbringing.  -__-

While I've never really cried, Frog's flashback makes me tear up a bit, and then I do it again when he splits the mountain in half, though it's more out of happiness. Same with the original Epoch ending, before they went all "AND THEN EVERYBODY DIED" on us. I sniffled the first time I got the DS credits with the pictures in happiness, too.

The Dream Devourer ending aggravated me to the point of watery eyes, but we've heard that before...

As for Chrono Cross, not a lot of the scenes got me choked up, but the music really gave me neck tinglies. I did sniffle a bit at the orphanage scene and the Miguel stuff, though.

More than the scenes themselves, listening to the music and remembering gets me kinda misty. It's always a struggle not to weep in this video, from 0:35 to around 4:00

For me, I'm not really one to cry for movies and books, let alone video games.

If anything, I rarely cry in real life, and it's only when it's something that has threatened to derail my happiness for a long time (e.g. my friends making terrible life choices, or me not being able to finish college).  You get the picture.

Maybe it's because I'm slightly autistic that I don't declare my emotions as openly as others.

I do.  I understand.  I can be a bit weepy and emotional myself, but I know not everyone works that way.

Maybe it's because I'm slightly autistic that I don't declare my emotions as openly as others.

That would make sense.

I once shed a tear while listening to "Far Away Times" while the credits rolled back in 1995. I get a little emotional every time I listen to it, really. Something about that track just brings home the magnanimity of what Square Enix and its Dream Team accomplished, and also brings to mind the kind of sadness people separated by time would feel. Or something. But it's a good, fulfilling kind of sadness, like the end of Return of the King.

That's the only time I've ever gotten really emotional over a videogame. Even when Aeris died in 1997, I was just pissed at the realization that I'd never have Sephiroth in my party past that point in the game.

Nope. I also seldom cry for books or movies, though all three still do tend to effect me emotionally. I just tend to become morose, rather than cry.

I really don't cry very often. While watching the CE videos, I think it happened once. When Crono died (edit: in CT, I know he doesn't die in CE), it happened. Nothing too severe. Holding back tears.

Edit: I'm not all that attached to Cross. Instead of bouts of emotion I get very WTF.

Oh, yeah, CE. I teared up definitely when I watched video 82 and saw King Zeal while "The Devil" from An Ciunnuint played. FaustWolf couldn't have chosen better music for that.

And that music...it captured all the tragedy of King Zeal, even as he stood before the party in his intended hour of triumph. His tragic death at the Frozen Flame in the original timeline; his being deceived by Lavos; his painful, cathartic revelation that Zeal had been destroyed after his death in the timeline; his sad state upon the North Cape...I wanted him to win. I gave him, through dialogue, the possibility that he'd really succeed in dominating the Dream Devourer in fusion—that he'd successfully become a God of Dreams with which to serve the timeline for the better. He could restore Zeal; he could create a new Zeal a thousand times better than the old. He could heal time all over history, and grant transcendence to all sentience. He could enlighten and illuminate the world.

And all that potential was carried in a dread heart rendered cracked by all the tragedy that had befallen it and the kingdom under its charge. And then, moments later, that potential would be destroyed by the "Heroes of Time", who acted upon some sense of fear for safety and the status quo. It was preceded by that glorious speech, and that beautiful, melancholy music.

But hey; I made sure King Zeal is left alive at the end of CE...

Step inside the heart of ambition!!

Like many things I've been moved by CC and CT (CC mostly) But not to the point of tears.  It's the same with other stuff.  Like Final fantasy tactics.  I don't know, I guess I just don't get very emotional over stories.  ...Does crying of frustration and anger count?!  XD If so then I think I've done that a couple times maybe on other games.  not on Chrono though.

This. It was the first time I ever teared up in a game, and I was really hooked on CT since that moment.  Especially with the scene of Frog splitting the mountain in half. It still always gets me too, every time I play the game and get to that mountain scene. It's my favorite scene in any video game. I tend to really hold my emotions in, so no scene in VG has ever made me cry, and the only thing I've ever seen to make me bawl was the season finale of House season... 4 I think? I almost cried when I killed Magus to get one of the games endings, I felt like such a bad person when I killed him.
I also almost cried when Marle makes up with her father.
And I almost cried when Zeal was destroyed.

Ct , Zeal falling for me was quite emotional it was such an awesome place , and the whole of Magus character is quite emotional too , the new ending is so sad .

I'm a total sap in movies and books, but video games...not so much. I think I cried in Baten Kaitos and the Klonoa games, but CT (and so far, CC) did not move me to tears, though I was a little choked up at times (the death of all those fairies...).

Usually the endings get me choked up, but like I said, I don't often cry for video game characters.

I teared a bit at the part of Chrono Trigger when Crono sacrifices himself and is vaporized DBZ style by Lavos, and when Marle was in my party when he was brought back to life. That was both sorrowful and bittersweet.

Then at the ending of the Chrono Trigger DS, as Zeality said. That was sad in so many ways.

The only other series I ever really cried/almost cried was Super Paper Mario, because the story of Lord Blumiere (Count Bleck) and his beloved Timpani reminded me of myself in a way, and the fact that it was heart wrenching. The Romeo and Juliet of the Mario world.

The ending to Chrono Cross.  That song, Radical Dreamers, just made me tear up. The scenes in Tokyo at the very end of the game made me cry out of pure wonder. Just the confirmation of my theory that the two dimensions of Chrono Cross are paralell to ours just made me so emotional... It was great. Oh, and at the Dead Sea. I felt bad for Miguel, though his battle music was so freakin epic.

Hmm, yeah.

First time was when I saw the FMV with Crono being killed. Without the FMV it was a sad scene, but the FMV really improved it. Even seeing Magus' expression, and seeing Schala lieing there on the ground, helped the environment greatly. But what I thought was really awesome, was when Crono remembered Janus saying "One amongst you... Will shortly perish". I couldn't keep my eyes dry watching that.

The second time was some tears of joy during the ending of Chrono Trigger, hearing "To Far Away Times" while watching the Epoch flying through the nightsky. Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

The third time, I believe, was while playing Chrono Cross, that scene with Serge on the S.S. Invincible, after Lynx' attack on Hermit's Hideout, and when he remembers all his times together with Kid. Back then I really loved Serge and Kid together as a couple, and I really thought he cared so deeply about her.

The fourth time, Chrono Cross orphanage scene. Not so much the first part as the last, with Serge and Kid standing on the hill overlooking the flames, with the little Kid saying "Are you going to go away? Are you going to leave me?" and "Your cheek... It's wet...?" With that beautiful music behind it, Star Stealing Girl. I couldn't keep my eyes dry.

Finally, during the Chrono Cross ending. Schala's whole speech and all that, and the feeling of accomplishment, the wedding picture, and the beautiful song Radical Dreamers... Stunning. Simply stunning.

So yeah, I had some emotional moments while playing Trigger and Cross for the first time. I don't know if you can really say crying, but my eyes did go foggy and wet. I don't care if that makes me a sissy or something; I like to think of it as the story being conveyed very well to the player. Kato really did an amazing job. For Chrono Cross too.

Never cried in the Chrono series, though watching the Magus/Schala scenes in Crimson Echoes and the Dream Devourer scenes on the DS did strike a powerful chord within me because of my relationship with my own sister.

I may have cried when Aeris died. I don't remember if I did.

I did cry during Rocky Balboa. That's all the tears over ficitional characters I can think of at the moment.

I cry whenever in CC whenever I fight the Time Devourer and realize what the character designer did to Schala.
Dayuuum straight! Give us our early 20s, blue-haired, full dress Schala, darn it!

Early 20s?  I always thought she looked about 14 or 15.

And then she was like ten. lol
I'd like to see them explain THAT.

I will always have the heart of a 16 year old, no matter how frail I may become in the coming decades...

I don't believe I've seen Janus around much, now that it comes to mind... I hope he is safe.

I did cry during Rocky Balboa.

You 'n' me both, brotha!  The whole "It's about how much you can take" speech and the ending did me in.  Hair on its ends.  I thought that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpTD9AMLGCs) that scene stole the show, though.  Just stoked to see other Rocky fans...

I did the "It's how much you can take" speech as a scene in my Drama class. I played Rocky and my (at the time) girlfriend played Rocky Jr. The scenes that got me were the scene at the beginning where Rocky goes to the ruins of the ice rink and when he breaks down crying in front of Paulie at the factory. Those were the scenes that shed tears from my eyes.

Fun Fact: I saw the film opening night, in Peter Criss Kiss makeup.

When I first played this game ca. 1998, I cried after I beat it because of Schala failing to appear afterward, and I'd had a suspicion she'd been offed by her mother or Lavos. That's it. Even then she was my favorite and I wished I'd been able to play as her.

Though I did cry the day I heard about Crimson Echoes being C&D'd. That was more in rage, though, as I also pretty nearly smashed a few religious objects. (I was in Oklahoma at the time, staying with my grandparents. Make of this what you will.)

Not the chronos. I thought CC was depressive at some points (when you realize El-Nido is a huge experiment), but not that sad.

I never cried for video games, but I must say the latest Kingdom Hearts games almost made it. I think 358/2 days is a really, really depressive game.
