Title: My "i'm new here' thread
Post by: chi_z on October 05, 2009, 02:02:03 am
Hello all. A little, ok a lot, about myself. I've been coming to this site off and on for around a year now, never bothered to register just dwelled and soaked up the many great things this place has to offer (prerelease, scripts, radical dreamers). My first experience with chrono was back in 2001 I believe, or late 2000. I was 8 years old. The local rental store had chrono cross, my sister thought it looked cool. They also had chrono trigger in FFC sometime after, but it was always gone and I never could rent it. When I was in 7th grade I bought FFC and proceeded to beat CT in its various forms (ffc, snes rom, snes retranslation) a total of 16 times now. I'm working on the ds version as we speak. I've beaten CC around 13 times, just recently doing another playthrough. Rad Dreamers a couple times, just beating it again today.
I don't have a very big chrono collection, I have some sort of 8 disc mega collection of the chrono series soundtrack called platinum edition, copy 110 of 2500. How are all of you?

edit:oh btw i seem to have posted this in the wrong place if you could move it for me hehe

I'm not a mod, so I don't know how to move it.  But welcome chi_z!  The number of times you've beaten all of the games is really impressive.  I've only been around the site for about a month or so (after, like you, quite a bit of lurking :)), so I'm pretty new here as well.  New people unite!  There are a tonne of super friendly people on the Compendium, so I hope you have the same great experiences that I've had here so far.  :D

Your sig makes me laugh. Cartoon evil Spekkio, I'm guessing?

And with your experience with the Chrono series, you got my respect!

Welcome aboard, sir! :kz

Edit: Or Ma'am!

heh yea the pic is from the oekaki, its meant to be spekkio is the one who used porre to overtake guardia. that queen zeal pic makes her look like she is just as young as schala, just a more sassy version of schale haha.

guess I have played these games a lot, I like a good story just like Esmeld!  If it counts I played through the leaked version of CE a couple times, kinda hard when a lot of the game just isn't there though.

Not looking for a translation, just a rough guess I bet Magus said he'd hug the first person to hit Lucca. Or maybe grant a wish? Wizards are cool.
Cool to know you know two languages, I envy you :D

heh heh thanks for the welcome peeps. now for a critical thinking question:
we all want a third chrono, but when is the last time you saw a good third in a trilogy?
godfather? nope
starwars, maybe
lotr, maybe (imo no though)
the third batman movie from back in the day, nope

I'm not so sure I would welcome a 3rd game at this point, kato and mitsuda would pretty well be the only ones left to make it and everyone one else at square would be different.

The Return of the King is automatically awesome because of the presence of the Mouth of Sauron.

I thought the third LOTR movie was brilliant in some respects (Smeagol vs. Sam for the WIN! Smeagol vs. Frodo for the WIN! Ohhh, that music on Mt. Doom!) but they completely mishandled the Witch King of Angmar's awesome entrance into Minas Tirith -- wasn't even in the theatrical release at all -- as well as Eowyn's confrontation with the Witch King, which was always dear to my heart and the beginning of budding feminist leanings for me. Eowyn's confrontation seemed geared toward patronizing feminist and pro-feminist leanings taking root in Western society, but contained little of what made Tolkien's presentation of that clash so rich.

That said, I would embrace a third Chrono game as long as Kato did the scenario design and Mitsuda composed; I don't mind if Horii or Toriyama are nowhere to be seen. Zeal has always been the heart of Chrono IMO, making Kato's work on Chrono Trigger the most central.

Kato's triumph with Chrono Cross lies squarely in the fact that he was able to "up the ante" by switching the subject from time travel to a fresh concept. The decision to remove Magus was certainly a blunder, and the fact that Radical Dreamers included Magus fairly unambiguously leads me to believe it was not Kato's preference to do this, and that rather, he was possibly constrained by corporate influences or something.

Crimson Echoes has already shown several ways of "upping the ante" further and proven that there's room for thematic growth in the franchise: exploring the moral repercussions of time travel, and exploring how dimensional travel occurs de facto from the time traveler's viewpoint as a side effect of time travel. The clearest path forward, IMO, is a classic JRPG with a multi-scenario story that unfolds according to the player's decisions or performance throughout the story -- where the player shapes the world's history actively, and in major ways. Plus a Xenogears-style battle system, and giant robots since a futuristic time period is practically a given. Yeaaaahhh.

The big catch-22 is, if a new IP does the aforementioned things, it will be accused of being too much like Chrono, even though the series hasn't addressed the deeper nuances it could with further treatment. This is the source of my personal frustration with Square Enix's decision to let the franchise lie fallow.
