Chrono Compendium

Once the plugin is flawless, we need to create rendered images of the Chrono Cross models and add them to the encyclopedia. We'll be replacing the low-quality scanned models from Ultimania. Finishing an extractor for disc two may coincide with this objective.
As a byproduct, we'll also finish the rank icons for the Chrono Compendium (which lack certain models).
-
Okay, that works.
-
What size is best?
And format?
For example, these images, except the first one, are png32(with alpha channel), pretty big in filesize, but perhaps much bettern than jpg.
-
Ah, those are beautiful. Well, the bigger, the better, I guess. 1280 seems like a good width, since that's the width of most resolutions. And definitely, PNG like that.
I wonder what poses we should have them, though? Front, back, side (and other side if asymmetrical)...but after that? Top, bottom, angle? I wonder if it's all necessary. Maybe it's enough to have Front, back, side, and angle.
Edit: I realized this would be very time-consuming and is very important to the encyclopedia, so I made it 10,000. How much time does it take to produce 4 images like this of a model? (front, back, side, angle) I remember struggling with the render view.
-
I don't know...
PNG is a very good format, though GIF is more universal.
Other than that, those are very nice high-resolution shots.
-
BTW, whoever feels want to do this task just do it.
I'm not currently working on it. :)
-
:P
Well, better gnaw the large bone bit by bit.
It seems many models don't look that great in high resolution like 1280.
Just post some of them to get feedbacks, in alpha-beta order.

I've uploaded everything provided so far now.

I think this would be the ultimate solution. If there were some way to rip the models and textures and create a site like this (allowing guests to examine the models however they please), we could call it a day. No idea how much legwork this would entail, of course.
-
I don't know if you still after this.
Creating the site itself shouldn't be a problem, there are lots of examples on the internet on how to create a model viewer. If it can be hosted here things will be easier for it can be embed in the encyclopedia.
Here's some example:
Serge (https://storage.googleapis.com/utunnels1.appspot.com/ccmodelviewer/index.html#battle/serge)
Kid (https://storage.googleapis.com/utunnels1.appspot.com/ccmodelviewer/index.html#battle/kid)

ShadowCat (https://storage.googleapis.com/utunnels1.appspot.com/ccmodelviewer/index.html#battle/shadowcat)
Rotate - Left mouse button
Zoom - Mouse wheel
Move - Right mouse button
The models are in json format and I compressed them into zip files to reduce the size. The average size of a player battle model (with default and attack animations) is around 150kb (1.5mb if unzipped).

Schala doesn't have a torso. Yes i went there. Under her sun dress. And Kid looks like a cat.
Oh get Crono,Lucca,and Marle! Thanks!
-
Schala doesn't have a torso.
Because the game never shows what's under the dress?
We are lucky the model even has legs at all.

Ah yes, the classic move of not modeling everything, or make pitch black the area instead.
Anyway... hmm, interesting. It'd be fun to see the rest.

These are so amazing, utunnels. I never knew beach bum had eyes!
I don't suppose you could grab Starky's tech robot, Starman Guardian?
-
Yeah, some animations look weird because they are not mean to be played after another. Maybe I should separate the animations. But for now I can just manally edit several frames.
This is from the star burst tech. Without lasers though.

I updated the model viewer so now it supposes multiple animations.
The player models already have merged animations so there's no effect.

Wow. Really loving all these. Especially Starman.

It seems the looping animations didn't work well because three.js ate the last frame(not sure if it is a bug). And unlike gif animations, the first frame need to be copied and appended to the end of the animation to make a smooth loop.
So I did a little hack to to fix the last frame.
Kechop's death animation (https://storage.googleapis.com/utunnels1.appspot.com/ccmodelviewer/index.html#battle/ketchop) now should look better. Click << to check it out.

Stupid me. I could just make a list page.

Damn, it's so liberating to be able to view all the details and rotate at will. This is incredible.

Now the list should have all the battle models, minus some odds and ends. The attack animations of Hi-ho Tank are all junks for some reason, will check that out later.

I'm loving the model viewer, thank you for all the hard work you've put into it. Being able to see the models from all angles really lets one appreciate the small details that are easy to miss (or outright impossible to see) in the game itself.
Would it be possible to get the Frozen Flame's model? I'm curious about whether it's a fully rendered object, or if they used shortcuts since you only get to see one side of it in-game.

There's no high resolution flame, unfortunately.

By the way, it is interesting to see they still made basic animations for little Serge, though he's more like a corpse on the back in game.

Even though the Flame's back is obviously just a mirror of its front, I'm happy to see that they bothered to put a back on it at all.
Thanks for posting it!

Is anyone still in contact with utunnels?
The million-dollar question here is how to back these up, in case Google ever stops offering this particular service. I'm fine just linking to the viewer from the site, but if the unthinkable happens, there has to be a way to see these offline...
-
Unfortunately not.
I am still in touch with Thought and Faustwolf, though. Not relevant to this conversation, but if you ever want to contact them for any reason, let me know.
-
Ah...nah, utunnels left us the utility in backup form. From his other utility thread, we have a complete archive of all objects and models, so with the two combined, we should be safe.
https://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/index.php/Utilities_(PSX) (https://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/index.php/Utilities_(PSX)) will be their home. Model viewer will have the ripped models inside its archive, and I'll add a viewer app subsection with his backup linked there.
-
Should we honestly call this one good? Can't think of much else that needs to be investigated by checking out the individual models, nor much use for forcing all the encyclopedia pages to have model images. The viewer is on that PSX utilities page.
