Title: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: Lord J Esq on August 13, 2009, 05:58:57 am
The PAX schedule is now online:

http://www.paxsite.com/schedule.php

Note that this year they're starting at 10:00 am on Friday, so it's a full three-day event now.

I've created this new thread to avoid some confusion that might be caused by organizing our meet-ups in the other PAX thread. This is your definitive go-to center for organizing meet-ups with your fellow Compendiumites! Feel free to arrange your own, individual or small group meetings here.

In addition to smaller meet-ups, I think it would be cool if we did something as a combined group, more formal than just nodding and winking at each other. Maybe lunch? Or dinner? There are many good restaurants within walking distance. There are many non-food options, too, both at PAX itself and in Downtown Seattle. We could see a movie (I'd kind of like to see Ponyo), or check out Pike Place Market, or do the Seattle Underground Tour, which I hear is pretty cool. Or, at PAX, we could play games, organize tomato-throwing at the Square Enix booth, or conceivably kidnap Gabe and Tycho and order them make PAX a never-ending wonderland of fun, sort of like what Chevy Chase did in Wally World at the end of National Lampoon's Vacation.

I think it would be a good idea if everyone who wants to meet up would post their availability times. Then we can compare notes and see what works best for the most people. If there are many scheduling conflicts, or if we just get along so darn well, we could potentially have two big group meetings!

I'll post my own availability times as soon as I've figured out my schedule. It's a big friggin' expo!

Extra Notes:

If you haven't been before, the convention center gets very crowded during PAX. If you eat inside the convention center, plan on waiting in line for half an hour--and more during the conventional mealtimes. It would be smarter to bring your own food or eat at a restaurant outside the convention center. There are two malls, Pike Place Market, and several commercial squares within walking distance.

Many of the panels and events fill up very fast. If there's something you absolutely must attend, be sure to show up at least half an hour early to get in line--sometimes one whole hour. The lines for some of the biggest events, like the keynote, start filling up many hours before the actual event.

The exhibition hall will be jam packed. Expect to spend a lot of time just dealing with the human traffic.

Be smart about planning your schedule so that you don't end up spending all of PAX in line. That sort of happened to me last year, and it was lame.

I will arrive in Seattle on Thursday. So I will have all of Friday and Saturday open of scheduling, as for Sunday I'll be heading out that evening or late after noon.

Man I haven't been to Pike Place Market in years...

I mentioned this in the other thread, but it bears mentioning in here. I'm planning on going to PAX for Friday and Saturday only, so that's my availability. I also may not be available after the show Saturday, but that's not carved in stone at this point.

I can definitely do Saturday. Not sure about Sunday. I'm up for going out to eat or anything : D. Anytime on Saturday would work, and maybe Sunday. It just depends on how much I like the con whether I will pay for Sunday admission or not.

In the area of the Convention Center, there's the center itself, the Westlake Center (a mall which is serviced by the monorail), Game Works and Pike Place, the famous market. All of those are in walking distances, although Pike Place might be a bit long and Game Works might be fairly crowded. Any other thoughts?

Location suggestion = The Zen garden area outside, located through doors at the far end of the 1st floor area that's accessible from the Pike Street entrance (a.k.a. - go through the Pike St. entrance and keep going straight, head past the escalators and past the wall covered in LED text art screens).

HOWEVER... I'm sad to say that I will be unable to attend at all. I originally thought that I would be going to KumoriCon for just one day, but discovered today that I had confused what my travel/hotel buddy intended - we'll be going all 3 days of the con. I wish there was some way I could meet up with you guys, but considering that my friend went through a lot of grief over hotel room issues for the con (room got booked for the wrong days, she couldn't get her money back, and she had to rent another room somewhere farther away), there's no way I'm going to back out this (plus, I've never been to KumoriCon, and a bunch of friends that I only get to see at SakuraCon will be attending).

I think Saturday would be better, as I maybe a bit tired for part of Friday. Time? I would want it in the mid-afternoon or early evening.( 13:00-18:00)

The panels seem interesting(though very little I'm personally interested in) . I think I might want to go to the Monkey Island one, Sex in video games one, and perhaps one more. I also want to go to the concert and that other late night activity (can't recall it...)

My friend and I have pretty much decided to go to the con on Saturday all day and then do sight seeing on Sunday. She want to go to this large sega arcade in Seattle. I'll have to go research some fun things I want to do. I get to Seattle late Friday night, so I am unavailable Friday.

Game Works is that arcade. It's not far from the Convention Center.

The three-day passes have sold out. Anyone who doesn't have their PAX passes ordered yet will need to buy one-day passes, and I'd recommend soon.

Wow, I didn't know it'd be so popular. I guess I'll go do that for Saturday then. I hope Saturday isn't sold out >_>;.   I never pre reg when I go to cons.

The Compendium's Washington-based populous should have tipped you off to the high dork factor of the state. We are sort of a technological center (you can have more than one, right?) of the US, I guess...? Also a fairly large portion of Asian immigrants, though idk how much that effects things...*shrugs*

I plan to go next year. I'm taking a huge vacation next year following graduation from school, which will have me renting a car and driving from Tennessee to California, then all the way up the coastal highway into Washington, then to PAX for that weekend. I then plan to fly home. So not this year, but next year you can plan to see Bruce White, CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) there!

Crap, my laziness has led to me missing Saturday passes. They've now sold out. I've picked up Friday passes though. I'll need to talk to the girlfriend; it may be possible for us to meet up with people outside of PAX itself on Saturday.

Bah, I feel foolish now. I'll post again when I have more information.

Post by: ZaichikArky on August 26, 2009, 07:20:54 pm
^ Whoa really? This is craaazy. i guess they want to limit the people or something? I live in Silicon Valley which *should* be nerd central, and they never sell out for the big con up in San Jose (Fanime). I'm glad I ordered my Saturday pass and made my friend order one too. Yeah, we can arrange something with you so you can meet us wherever on Saturday (seems to be a consensus for at least one meeting time).
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: Lord J Esq on August 26, 2009, 07:31:05 pm
It's a matter of the convention center running out of space. This year they're renting the whole thing--all six floors and all annexes--and they're still expecting the crowds to fill it up. Last year there were something like 60,000 registered attendees. This year will be even more!
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: ZaichikArky on August 26, 2009, 07:35:03 pm
Ah. The attendance for fanime is just under 15,000. I can't believe PAX is so big. I thought it was a small con XD;.

Sure, I'm sure I'll be in the mood for coffee and some kind of pastry/gelato they offer there : ). Most of the panels I'm thinking of attending are happening at night anyway.

The have the best gelato in the whole city! But expect the place to be packed. I will probably be up for that, but I haven't finalized my PAX schedule yet. I'm being pulled in several directions at once.

I'm finding myself needing to plan that Saturday. Does 1pm at Gelatiamo work for everyone, or would another time/location be better?

Saturday at 1:00, The schedule looks like most of the events are missable for an few hours at that time. Location Gelatiamo?
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: ZaichikArky on August 31, 2009, 07:22:07 pm
Sure, works for me : ). I have no idea where this place is and how to get there, so is it possible to meet at the con and go there together or do you all just want to meet there independently?

Also, I have decided not to cosplay because I heard that this con doesn't have much cosplay and I'd look silly cosplaying something that has little, if anything to do with video games anyway. My friend would have a cosplay that'd work, since she cosplayed VG characters twice, but she doesn't want to cosplay this time either. So instead I'll just wear one of my mario shirts on the day of the con XD. And probably a different Mario shirt on Sunday.

It's really simple to get to. It's at 3rd and Union, only a few blocks away from the Convention Center itself:

There are always some cosplayers at PAX, and they're always a winning site! If you have the confidence to pull it off, you'll stick in people's memories, just like that guy who dressed up as Princess Peach.

To get to Gelatiamo, leave the Convention Center and walk downhill on Pike Street till you get to 3rd Avenue. Turn left and keep walking for a couple of blocks. You will see Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony, on the right-hand side of the street. Gelatiamo is directly across the street, on your left side.

I couldn't get tickets (sold out the day before I was paid), but I'll bus up for that gelato on Saturday. Bout how long do you guys plan on staying there? It takes a bit of time to bus to and from Seattle, and I don't really want to be out there after dark.

I'm not sure. I don't know how long we'll stay down there. But maybe we can find some other things to do with you. If you want, you can borrow my pass and check out the con yourself for a while and I'll go find some way to entertain myself. Also, I know how we were thinking of playing card games. I'll bring my deck XD.

There's always sight seeing. I am not letting you leave Washington until you've been to Pike Place market. I know of a cheapish bowling alley in Kirkland, too, but that'd require people willing to drive a lot of other people around. I don't have a license.
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: ZaichikArky on September 01, 2009, 05:18:41 am
Yeah, I'm reserving sight seeing for Sunday, since I didn't get a pass for Sunday. Maybe you should come on Sunday too!

EDIT:

A few more things.

Question. I will need to know approximately how long it takes to pick up the pass so I'm not late to the ice cream thing. It takes 2-3 hours at  my con to pick up Saturday passes. And Apparently since this con is much huger, I'm worried it will take a ton of time. Is it possible to pick up the pass late Friday night? My hotel is far from the con, so I'm not sure if my friend will be up for driving us there to pick up our passes, but in some ways, if that's possible, it's preferable.

Oh and Lord J, it would make more sense if I cosplayed something that had to do with video games(I have in the past), but the two cosplays I was thinking about have nothing to do with video games and have more to do with Japanese culture, so even though they'd fit in with an anime con, I think I'd get strange looks for the wrong reasons. So I'm going to have to go with a VG-related shirt this time : ).

If Zephira just waltzes in dressed as Schala, problem probably solved. Everyone just look for whoever has blue hair. Grimmjow masks may also be fashionable.

You guys will have to take a group pic or something for those of us stuck in our native places on that day.

The two of you plus one ZaichiArky friend makes three! You don't have to bring anything, or pay anything. It's all paid for and the food will be taken care of. I'm the sous chef! And I've already told the top chef to prepare for twenty people, on the assumption that I'd be bringing a couple of guests along.

Room for one more person, if anyone's interested.

Oh...! The one thing you might want to bring is some kind of transportation. If that's not viable and you find yourselves in a pinch, I'm sure we can work something out, but, if you have at least one set of wheels between the three of you, that'll probably make your lives happier.

Yes, Serge, PAX has started today.

Okay, so I'm leaving super early to the airport cuz I'm going by trains and it takes a while (it's only 40 mins by car >_>). I will not be bringing my computer, so I'll be unable to talk to any of you before Saturday. Looking forward to seeing y'all : D.

I have discovered that I am the most attractive person here, if I may say so myself.
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: ZaichikArky on September 07, 2009, 04:21:06 pm
:3. Yes, Kebrel, you are most definitely the most attractive. Especially compared to Z girl who wants to do modeling and everything! Pshhhh.

Anyway, I had fun at PAX. I won't write about what I did other than con-related stuff but I'll write a bit what I thought of the con.

My bf said that I would not like it because he knows my tastes, and PAX generally isn't it. However, what I liked most (well other than hanging out with friends) was the console room, which I found better structured than any other con I have attended. The problem with me is that I kind of don't play the games featured at PAX. Up until 2003, 100 percent of the games I played were nintendo games, and now I have "broadened my horizons" so that 90 percent of the games I play are nintendo games... and the 10 percent that isn't nintendo wouldn't be featured at PAX. What I did most of the time I was actually at the con was to play street fighter 4, which really made me happy, and now I will have the game on my dad's computer. I'm a really big fan of the SF series in general.  I also played some other games. Maybe I wasn't supposed to, but I randomly challenged people at their games and if they were enough of a challenge for me, we had fun playing : ). We'd talk about the games we were playing as I was getting my ass kicked. And I found it really, really hard to find someone my level to play in SF 4. I preferred that they kicked my ass, but it was like... either I was way too strong, or they were way too strong. Ah well. Anyway, because I want to play SF 4 some more, and hang out with Compendiumites and my other friend, I will try to go next year!

Otherwise, I just enjoyed hanging out. If I can go next year, I'll try to go for Friday and Saturday so I can perhaps try to do more other than play street fighter. I wanted to check out more of that... uh display area(?) but I didn't have the chance to do anything other than look around and then try the unreleased nintendo games(the few that there were) because I just was kind of limited in my time... I actually had to take the bus back to my hotel (it was far away from the con) on Saturday because my friends wanted to leave early and I don't tend to leave cons till at least midnight (sometimes up till 3 am).

Some of us might post pics at some point. Be on the lookout for that!

Zaichik, go ahead and post yours from last night if you can. I'm just waiting for permissions from a couple people before I post Gelatiamo.

Seven things made this con awesome.
First and most importantly, Starcraft II. GIANT posters of Tychus, Zeratul and Kerrigan marked the playing station. The lines were huge, but it was just as satisfying to sit and watch. I think the Mothership is my current favourite unit.
Second, Halo 3 playing stations! I stuck a plasma grenade on some guy's crotch, it was great
Third is the Pho shop within walking distance. They don't have bubble tea (wtf) or that wide of a selection, but there was some pretty good meat, and an hour long pun battle between Melchior and Pip.
Fourth is the people who enjoyed themeselves WAY too much while playing Rock Band. There were people jumping and spinning around on stage, some guy got chased around the room by an enforcer while doing a solo, and there were two Captain Falcons. One was pink.
Fifth, the concert. I only saw the last person who played, but it was the guy who did Portal's Still Alive song, so it was worth it. There was a song about zombies (Aaall we want to do is eat your brains), a song called Springtime about getting it on outside, and a song called Fancy Pants which had to do with a guy being the best in everybody's pants. And, of course, there was Still Alive. The whole auditorium sang along with it. I wouldn't be surprised if he had stopped singing without anyone noticing.
I forgot what number six was, so I'm just going to say the yellow men who flopped around on all the pillows. There were these two cosplaying guys dressed up in full yellow hazmat suits. I don't know what game or show they were from, but they were still awesome
The seventh, and perhaps most awesome, thing is the little red buttons with flashing lights that said AWESOME in big white letters.

And number eight, because I just remembered what six was supposed to be: a giant Kon riding the bucking bronco/demon horse.

T'was a good occasion, and well-met! Just for the record: Kebrel is exactly the same in real life as he is as "Kebrel" here online. As for myself, my big secret is out: I'm more well-spoken in the written word than I am in person!

I had a good time meeting with you guys, and I'm sorry that my flu put a damper on the evening. At least yesterday I was well enough to function at a basic level. Today I am WHOAMG SICK. =(

My best highlight of PAX: Gabe and Tycho! It was also very cool to finally see the sixth floor of the Convention Center.
Worst highlight: The Wil Wheaton panel filled up about five days before I got in line.

Sorry that I missed out on meeting up with ya guys...

Especially since my con experience (KumoriCon) was less than grand (all sorts of weird drama and other shit happened during it, like the con security being insanely rude assholes to EVERYONE). Still had good fun, though, mostly with some close friends and my roommates (one of which is my bud Kim, who sometimes cosplays as Queen Zeal and is as hardcore a CT fan as I am).

Yeah, I'm sure Radical Dreamer won't mind his pics being up here. Anyway, I think he has the best pics of us on his camera! I really want him to upload this certain picture :3. Anyway, this is the only good one I have.

I have titled this: J AND HIS Z BITCHES

We were trying to find a way to do Chrono-poses... but then failed. And then for some reason that Russian doll ended up in the picture. Whoever lives there likes Russia : D.

I hope you feel better, Lord J. I think I'm coming down with something too. And now I can't find my dangerous nose medicine *sigh*. And I can't get anymore since it was uh, pulled off the market. I slept all day today and woke up just 10 mins ago. I hope it's not the flu. I wish cold eeze worked as well as the nose medicine.

You've got H1N1 Zai, there's virtually no doubt about it; I can diagnose you all the way from Ohio because my PoliSci undergrad degree obviously conferred mad skillz upon me. Hide! Preferably in a doctor's office!

It would be kind of hilarious if they traced it all the way down to Lord J as the source index case, but more than likely there were a bunch of people already carrying the virus in attendance, since it was in Washington after all. It's scary to see how the real world and gamenerdworld can collide.

Good luck fighting this off everyone.

One of my school-friends (an enforcer) caught it too. We went to a movie tonight and she was wearing a mask, I think she just got over it.
I guess it's a pretty high-risk convention, what with all the shared controllers and games and tight spaces. That mechanical demon horse probably wasn't all that sanitary, either. Those yellow men sure didn't have to worry about anything at least!

Occasional sneezing wouldn't happen to be one of the symptoms, would it?
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: Lord J Esq on September 10, 2009, 04:11:24 am
Could be, but unless it's accompanied by some kind of congestion at the very least, you've probably just got something in your nose.

I too have an enforcer friend who got sick. It's not really this bad every year: You'll notice that PAX wasn't a hotbed for colds or other contagious infections. Just swine flu. That's because we're already in the midst of a global swine flu epidemic, and there were flareups here in Washington prior to PAX. So, yeah, when that happens, it's a given, but the confluence of events to get us to that point is pretty rare.
Title: Re: PAX Event Schedule Online & Compendium Meetup(s)
Post by: ZaichikArky on September 10, 2009, 04:48:31 am
Yeah, it's not the nature of PAX, but the nature of cons themselves. Anytime you have a huge congregation of people in one enclosed area, there is a big chance that some bug will go around. I remember one year at AX there were a ton of people getting some kind of cold, and then at Otakon several times there was a ton of people getting some kind of bug (I think it was a bad cold). Anyway, I'm happy cause I found my happy nose medicine! I'm pretty sure what I have is the start of a cold, but I'm trying to fight it off before I get full fledged sick and I'm hoping it will work.

If anyone wants to do a meetup at PAX, I suggest it being on a Saturday.

Won't be able to get a badge for the con, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun hanging out in the "legal areas" of the center (where a badge isn't required). And if I am lucky enough, I might have my Janus cosplay done in time (and if not, oh well... at least I can bring my Alfador plushie).

Very eager to do it... with or without cosplay. Definitely bringing Alfador. <3

So - are we going to make some organized plans for this?

Such as where we are all going to meet up (preferably someplace that doesn't require a con badge, since I will be coming without one due to not being able to afford it). I suggest having it be someplace like Freeway Park, which is not only easy to get to via the 4th floor in the center, but seriously awesome to take photos at (if you happen to be wearing cosplay, mainly).

Doesn't look like I'll have my Janus cosplay done in time, so I'll just bring along Alfador.

I'm hoping to host a The FEAST outside of PAX, but I'm not sure where or when, or even if it will happen at all. Less formally, we might try doing a midday meetup during PAX. That worked nicely last year. Let's work out which times work best. The full PAX schedule will be up soon.

And holy moly: They're renting out Benaroya Hall (home of the Seattle Symphony) as their new Main Hall this year. I've been in there plenty of times; it's very nice digs! They're also renting out part of the nearby Sheraton Hotel to use as a satellite theater. This shit is BIGGEST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgITBzujCS0).

@Z: I've got your cell phone number still (unless it's changed), so I'll text you if Things Happen. So far, it looks like the Compendiumite Contingent at PAX is too small and scattered to support a get-together. A lot of people neglected to buy three-day passes before they sold out, and are only going for one day. Others are unable to attend for other reasons.

But I'll be there!!

@K: Wow! All cosplayed up and no ticket to get in. =(
Gotta buy your ticket earlier next year!
Maybe you can get one from eBay?

K, I didn't buy a ticket either. You usually can just buy them at the con even though they say they're sold out, they really aren't. Oh it's a money problem... well I bought a ticket for someone here last year and my general idea is that people don't expect to pay me back, but maybe if I have some extra cash. I'm kinda strapped for money this year as well...

J, yeah just text me phone number is the same. I should be around the con all of Saturday. If anything, we can just hang out and play cards again.

Okay. I'm going to show up around 1pm and hang out at the convention center for an hour or so.

Planning to cosplay as "Sporty Link" (Zelda sports jacket, matching athletic pants, green Link hat, elf ears), and dork around just enjoying the awesome PAX-tastic atmosphere since I'm not able to enjoy the con itself...

I may have not had a badge, but I still had an epic time!

A close friend briefly let me borrow his badge to go see the BttF DeLorean, sneak a quick peek at some game booths, etc. And later on, me and some other friends waited in line for the big SEGA-sponsored deal at GameWorks... 2 free hours of gaming, a chance at winning epic prize packages in a raffle, and FREE FOOD/DRINKS. It was fantastic. If I had that much fun without a badge, then I'd probably be in paradise if I could fully attend the con.

Oh, and several cosplay buds of mine got their photos on several gaming sites (as well as landing a 'booth dude' job for next year, in the case of my friend Chris who was cosplaying as Dastan from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time). My friend Elias certainly got the most photos taken - he was Wicket the Ewok.  :kamina

Next year, if I don't get kidnapped off to KumoriCon by my friend Kim, I'm definitely attending PAX. And I highly hope that we can all manage to have a true forum meetup arranged for it, as well. We all have a year to plan... so let's make it awesome!
