A bigger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8eQ1FdxEEA&fmt=18) update will follow (probably in a few days), but I'm thrilled to announce the translation of Room #1 of the Chrono Cross Ultimania developer interviews with the event planning team. Naturally, GlitterBerri (http://berriblue.blogspot.com/) has delivered a sweet, robust translation! You can read it at Supporting Material Translation (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Supporting_Material_Translation.html) or click here (http://www.chronocompendium.com/images/wiki/6/6b/CCPg1.png) and here (http://www.chronocompendium.com/images/wiki/d/dc/CCPg2.png). Glitter's been working on other projects too; go to BerriBlue (http://berriblue.blogspot.com/) and see what's been going on!

Holy smokes, Zoah WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THIS AWESOME BACKSTORY...damn. Was Zoah supposed to be the prince of...Guardia? Was Zoah intended to be Crono's and Marle's bebeh!? I mean, what other country in the Chronoverse has a monarchy?
Fantastic work Glitterberri, the Chrono fan community owes you one!
-
Awesome job.
Yeah, while all 3 other Devas have their back stories, all we know about Zoah is his nightmares that hint his painful past.
BTW, Zoah loves cats, isn't there som cat-lover in Chrono Trigger?
There are lots of things like that. For example, after you defeat the final boss, each character says a few words, but every character in the game has something to say. Since there are characters whose words are important, try to see them all if you can!
And they are pure evil, since only the character with smaller index in the part will say his/her alternate lines, so if you want to see all of them...do some math...
Was Zoah supposed to be the prince of...Guardia?
He's 28... although he could be Marle's loooooong lost brother.
-

You know? Age is one of the things that can change from this type of changes. But, considering how a war was the excuse to use the helmet, and since for Guardia's Fall it would be ridiculous to think of that case. On the other hand...
But on another thing... 64 characters?! Imagine if they had kept that. I wonder who might have been those extra additions. Dario could have joined? Even Serge's mom? I wonder...
-
Yeah, Zoah would have to have been Marle's long-lost bro deducing from his canonical age in the final version. Still -- whoa!
-
64 Characters?!
Good God, Kato... what the hell is wrong with this man... :picardno
And damn the time constraints! Damn them, I say!
-

He was there to spy on the protagonist?
Well, if he's the prince of Guardia, how would he have a business with Serge?
-
Probably through Belthasar. You know he got Lucca and Robo into the plan, so he was also going to include him.
-
...Unless Zoah is the prince of Zeal, which would also fulfill the royalty requirement...
Yeah, I shouldn't have gone there. I'll stop now.
-
Yeah, it is still good material for fan-fictions though. 8)

Haha, well Faust, you know Zoah's gonna be the new hot topic here, so he's bound to get some wackier theories. And even though I often bitch about the amount of characters I'd still loved to have seen all 64...for whatever reason.
This was a truly great treat. I love these kinda interviews. Many thanks, GlitterBerri.
-
And with that, I accidentally knock Zoah's silver helm off, sending it
falling down through the night sky to the ground!
Gulp... did I just do that?
This is the first time I've ever seen his true face.
Even for a guy like me, I'm taken aback by his looks. His hair sways in the
moonlight, as his piercing blue eyes survey the environment below.
His beauty is different than a woman's... there's some sort of a fierce,
intrepid quality about him.
He is truly... a beautiful person.
Zoah's hand suddenly comes across my face, eagerly returning the blow.
"SERGE, LISTEN TO ME!"
-
You are awesome Faust.
But it seems not easy to knock his mask(?) off.
-
Looks like Zoah wears a helmet to me. Probably not easy to just knock it off.
Earlier, when I was reading this at Berriblue's, I was confused by "Room 1" until I realized there were more pages not yet translated.
-
Damn. "Zoah = Magus" as a workaround to dropping Magus from Guile fits right in with the fortune teller's explanation of a "dark, tragic history" (or however she phrases it).
-
「”1人称”はその人を見た”体言後置形”」とか。それがプログラムを通ると、「ポシャルはその人を見たでしゅる」といった漢字に変換されるんですね。
”‘Person 1’ saw that person ‘Ending Word,’” etc. Then when you’d put it into the program, you’d get “Poshul saw that person!”
Although these things don't fit English grammar...
Kinda like "[first person pronoun] that person saw[substantive postpositon]."
To make it more CCish, maybe:
Poshul thaw-shuru that perthon.
or
Poshul thaw that perthon-shuru.
-
Is it possible Zoah might have been meant to be... Crono? I mean, if he married Marle, he would presumably be a prince. And maybe Zoah yelling all his lines was supposed to be ironic, since Crono never spoke.
Or not, I don't know.
-
Hey you could be onto something SilentP !
-
He's too big to be Crono, unless he was Frankensteined by someone after killed in the fall of Guardian event.
Well, or maybe he's not a big guy in earlier development.
-
Crono was in his late teens, so a late growth spurt combined with some bodybuilding is not out of the question. (It's more likely than that someone with that physique could be Magus, anyway.) For fanfic purposes, I think I may play with the idea of him being Porrean royalty, though--no reason why they shouldn't have some sort of powerless nominal head-of-state whose job is to look pretty while the military runs the country.
The 64+ PC thing...explains a lot about why they didn't think that having 45 PCs was a bad idea.
-
So the accent system was hot shit and there was supposed to be even MORE characters, huh...What a backwards land they must live in! :P
C'mon, Chrono Cross remake...!
-
The accent system is actually kind of interesting from a technical point of view. This does not mean it was a good idea.
-
I presume their point was how CONVENIENT the program was through the project entire development mainly on writing script/dialogue parts.
While on the subject, the new Zoah's unveiled backstory intrigued me, albeit it is in form of non-spoiler and rudimentary addresses.
I doubt the writer intended he was Guardia's native or from their royal family lines, because in Chrono Cross bio data screen,
it say that his origin is El Nido. This left me puzzled :?

Well, maybe it was intended for Zoah to have Zenan Mainland as origin (or even Unknown) before dropping the idea, which prompted the change.
-
If the Northern Ruins of Choras were an indication of a Choran royal lineage, I guess we could make a stretch and say Zoah might be Choran royalty. And who knows what kind of system Regiorra had going in the Chrono Cross time line, if it was a country/domain separate from Porre?
-
It's elementary.
Zoah is the Batman.
-
I enjoy reading these interviews that are just waiting to be uncovered and deciphered! I wish we learned more about Guardia though. Hopefully a new Chrono game will feature it and a new country. Heck, maybe events before Trigger.....or the ending to the Dream Devourer could be the past?! Come on,I wanna learn more about Chorus.
-
I'm glad you enjoyed it, everyone. Next up is the second Battle Room interview in the Ultimania series or possibly a Chrono Trigger mail interview with the story planner, both courtesy of ZeaLitY.

Thanks for the fix, utunnels. Not having played the game I wasn't sure how Poshul spoke, but this is a nice rendering of what the developers wanted to say. I'll edit the interview page to be more accurate in this regard as soon as I return home. ^^
-
Yeah, actually the English script is far more complex than that, for example:
I{f}{ }{th}i{s} { }i{s} {suffix}{ }{an }alta{r}
o{f}{ }{the }Div{i}ne{ }D{r} agon
{w}o{r} {s} hipe{r} {s} ...{page}
{upcase:00}{th}en{ }m{a}yb{e}{ }{name:26}
kn{o}w{s} {suffix}{ }{s} ome{th}in{g}
about{ }it.{end}
There are pretty a lot of accent key words. :picardno
-
This is great information to read! Thanks so much for translating, GlitterBerri! :D

Woah, Crono was the first character that came to my mind when reading the part about Zoah... but it can't be him, can it? :?
Curiously, the mushroom that turns Funguy into a mushroom-man is found in Shadow Forest, where that lost Zoah backstory was supposed to be hinted at... And this mushroom Key Item is described as "An expensive delicacy found only in the Guardia region". Mmh... Could Zoah be the one that dropped this mushroom in the forest?
