Me, I read about it in Nintendo Power.

I got it used for my birthday way long ago in 95-96 around after it came out because my parents/brother knew that I got all hooked on FFVI (then known to me as FFIII, har har...such a kid I was...).

Ramsus gave me a list of good SNES RPGs, and I got through BoF and BoFII before coming to Chrono Trigger. This was in early 2002.

I read about it in Nintendo Power when they did that two issue spread in their Epic Center portion, giving a walkthrough from the beginning of the game up until the first battle with Magus.  Got hooked, even though I wouldn't get the game for another year, year and a half or so.

Being a really late entrant into the world of RPGs, I found about it from a friend, at the same moment finding out that my new favorite game, Chrono Cross, was, in fact, a sequel. I was thrilled, to say the least, as I had just beaten CC and was looking for a new game.

I found out about it about three years ago at a now-defunct Zelda forum.  Almost all of the prominent residents were CT fanatics, so I decided to give the game a try.  As soon as I saw Lavos pwnx0r the planet, I was hooked like Tyrone Biggums on cocaine.

My brother bought it around when it first came out for SNES.  When I wanted an easy RPG to get into when I was little, he told me to play both that and FFIV.

A few years ago... 3, to be exact. My one friend kept wanting me to play Super Mario World or whatever it was with him on an emulator, and he brought over this disc with 100 games on it, and loaded them all. I played Mario for a while with him, but never really liked playing it much. One day I got bored and was looking through the game list, saw Chrono Trigger, and thought: 'interesting name, I'll check that out'. On doing so I found out it was an RPG, so I figured I'd not really play it (after all, RPGs are way too hard to figure out what with all their stats info and different weapons and all... well, I did think that at the time, at least.) But what really got me playing it: that you could put in your own name and that it would actually stay in the game! No joke! That was what actually did it for me. I'd never played an RPG before (this was... 3 years ago), so it was all totally new to me. No game had ever seemed as personal as that because I was able to toss in whichever name I felt sounded best. So Crono got my name Dan (I never do that anymore) with an extra space (because of a bloody typing mistake at the beginning, that remained throughout the entire game), Lucca got Robyn (I think one of my little sister's friends was over that day, and her name was Robyn, so I heard it and tossed it in), Marle got Brook (a nice sounding name), Frog got Finwe (after an Elf-lord from the Silmarillion), Robo got Meche (I'm a mechanical engineering student, after all), and by the time I got to Ayla and Magus, I was leaving names the same.
It's odd thought that I'm technically such a newbie to the game. I've written one of the longest fanfictions on ff.net pertaining to the series, engaged on numerous debates regarding it on Chronicles and on this (the pre-eminent Chrono site) on the tiniest and most miniscule points... and all this for a game whose name I did not know 3 years ago!
I still remember getting to the end of the game. It was like coming to the end of a good book, that semi-sad feeling (and the music didn't help!) that you won't be hearing any more about these characters. I really had never thought there were games like that, let alone one that was so old. I'd played Halo and all these games with better graphics by that time, but it instantly became my favorite game (and still is, likely... it shares a spot with CC.)

It's quite simple.  I walked in on my cousin Dark Mattering some random enemy.  Later on, I got a cart for myself, and have since run through it nigh a hundred times.  At one point, I had an L7.6 at Lavos and a perfect stat game saved on it at once.  Then they got saved over by some jackass I lent it to, despite my quite clear "don't mess with these."  Oh well, everything is temporal.

I received word of it from another player that I knew. More accurately, I saw my brother playing it at a really early point and, after trying my hand at it, decided I liked it. Forgot when this was-it was about five years ago, though, I'd suspect.

And, speaking of naming of characters... I've been naming Magus Janus ever since-My brother did that, so I suppose I sort of picked up on it from there. It wasn't until quite recently that I started naming Frog Glenn or Marle Nadia. Meh.

So, yeah.

The very first time I saw the game was when, my dad rented it and I watched it, I did not play it. I don't know how old I was then, but years later I played it on the computer with an emulator.

I was reading a game magazine looking hoping for squaresoft rpg in the spirit of secret of mana so I could play it with my neighbour.
It had an import usa review of this game.
As it turned out it wasn't multiplayer action like sd2 or even turn based
co-op like ff3/6 but the absorbing beautiful game we've all come to love.
-birds chirping-
I had to play it on a wild card as it was not released here untill "chronicles" came out a few years ago.

That's true, but was CT released everywhere on SNES? Plus, what does mondragon mean by 'wild card'?

*opens mouth, inserts foot*  That's what I get for not reading closely.  Yeah, I was thinking the US release.

And I'm willing to bet a 'wild card' is a blank cartridge used to write roms to to play on the actual SNES, right?  Or am I way off base?

I think it's just something that allows NTSC games to be played on PAL Super Nintendos. So, your description might actually be right.

I saw it in Nintendo Power, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound were the first two (and for a long time the only two) RPG's I owned. We got the game on the release day and I have loved it ever since. I have all the 95' issues of Nintendo Power, its funny to read the articles because they got so many things wrong.

Chrono Trigger for the snes has never seen a pal release over here in Europe. Games like spawn and other licensed drivel made up the majority of releases.
That was of course to a certain degree the same for the US but you still got a couple of games we would have liked to get our hands on. Especially rpgs. (If we can just quietly forget about Terranigma for a second, which was a pretty decent Europe-only translation).
So no Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound or even Super Mario RPG.
Converters would allow you to play usa games on pal systems but I think it was due to power current differences that in a game with battery saves such as Final Fantasy 3 (6), those saves would sometimes mysteriously vanish (NOOOOoooooo).

And I'm afraid that with a wild card I was indeed referring to a blank cartridge. You could save to disk and it was cheap.
Cheap in more than one way of course.
Nowodays I like to make a point of owning the actual game.
But I was young with little money (importing was very, very expensive) but a big love of rpgs and quirky japanese puzzle games.
And it's not much of a defense but because I used it mainly to play non europe released games  (I did own actual games, like tetris attack but I liked it better as Panel de Pon same goes for Puyo Puyo over Kirby's Avalanche) it didn't do as much damage the companies and ...never mind I was wrong.

My friend took his older bro's copy of the SNES game and brought it to my house a few years ago, in which he left it here and has forgotten about it since   . Said friend has moved away, and we've lost contact, so since '01 I've been his cart's foster guardian, so to speak.

I was at my friend's house. These people played RPGs and computer games all the time. I was always seeking their help with games and such. They were all-knowing with RPGs, and really got me propelled. The same people who gave me a NES cartridge of FF1 for one of my birthdays. I still have it.

Anyway, I saw them playing it once when I walked in. They were traversing through the Forest Maze, and I froze in my spot. I couldn't even speak, I just stared at the screen in awe for several minutes, watching the amazing graphics and the seemingly simple, yet fun gameplay. The attacks were kick-ass and the sprites looked sweet. Finally one of the guys noticed me standing there, and said "Wait...haven't you heard of Chrono Trigger? It's this new game, and it's probably the best Squaresoft game ever." I hadn't, but I wouldn't forget it.

My friend told me, "There's this great game I have and it has a character that you would love! He's got blue hair, a long cape, a big scythe..."

And I said, "When can I play it?"

:) Yes, Magus is the reason I even picked up the game, because judging by the name "Chrono Trigger," I assumed it was a shooter. Trigger...guns...it's a logical connection, or so I think. My pal had mentioned the game randomly earlier, but I dismissed it until said conversation occurred sometime in the middle of the night.

And now I'm hooked. Yay for friends.
Title: ZNES ROM!
Post by: The Shadow on December 28, 2005, 06:30:13 pm
A good amount of time ago, my brother got it off the internet.  He thought was a demo game because he could figure how to get out of 2300 AD area and gave up after about 2 hours, right after you beat the Dragon Tank ( pathetic).   That's when I stepped in and spent greater part of a month figuring out as many alternate endings, bosses and other cool stuff as I could.

I first learnt about it on the internet... sorta' kinda'. I had a phase where I was completly obsessed with old game music, like from the ol' NES and SNES days remixed... yeah I know.

Anyway, that braught me upon OCremix and I was going through all the catagories when I stumbled upon a certian game under "C" that had a funk-load of remixes. The rest is history (no pun intended).

i picked it up on impulse at blockbuster cause i thought the box art was cool.
Funny how some games u pick up 4 one reason turnes out 2 be one of your fav games of all times.
A Friend of my traded me the SNES Cart cause he was tired of playing it that was around 1998. When The Psx Ver. came out i bought it as well.Same with Chrono Cross. i have been playing some of the fan made demos that u can find here.Trigger was the Game That got me into RPGs
and will always be 1 of my top games.

It was back in `96 or `97... Can`t remember exactly. I went to spend the weekend at the house of this cousin o` mine and she had just been presented with a copy of CT... At the time none of us knew english, nor had we ever played a RPG before so we got kinda busted and spent a lot of time to go really not much far, as her Super Nes had this little habit of erasing saved files and restart by itself from time to time (maybe because of our habit of smashing the thing in the floor while pushing the cable of controls when jumping, rolling, flying while playing fighting games, SF2... :~)... But still we played it a lot and I really enjoyed the game back then :D The last scene I can remember playing at the time is the race with Johnny... Later, she probably finished the game by herself... Can`t really remember o_O

A few years later I downloaded the rom and then I really really started to luv it, as I already knew english and could finally understand the story  :D

Around that time too, I acquired my copy of CC, and remember playing both at the same time later in my 2nd or 3rd playthrough... Lotsa fun  :D
