Title: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: F-546 on May 31, 2009, 03:04:17 am
They are for a game of Radical Dreamers that I am doing with RPG Maker 2003 XP.
Please tell me what you think about it and if I should change something.

Sorry for my broken english.

Nice work! I think the colors on Serge could be a bit darker to match Kid's look. Also his hat could use a bit more shading. Other than that, he looks great!

I agree with what C99 just said: darken up the blues you're using and add more shade to the hood/hat; then you'll have a winning team.

Looks pretty fuckin clean, yo. I peeked in here when it was just Kid and thought, "that's cool", but everyone had already pointed that out so I left it alone. Then I come back and there's Serge! Sweet! STICKTOITIVENESS LEVEL UP~!! It'd be cool if they eventually had sprites that would correspond with some of the other things that happen in RD...Fighting scenes (like if you choose fight or magic or w/e, depending on what it said, i don't remember ), surprised sprites(!!!), and getting eaten by piranhas comes to mind...Man, RD was a brutal fucking game...>_>

Post by: Uboa on June 01, 2009, 04:05:43 am
Brilliant!  I think you've managed to capture the ambiance of RD really well in those.

I know that I really, really shouldn't be dwelling on this, but it's annoying at least knowing that nobody's going to jump in here anytime soon and say that this demands a CT-style rom hack adaptation.   Even with that in mind, though, this kind of work still does inspire happier imaginings along those lines...

(Also, unless future circumstances demand it, this is the last time you'll ever see anything close to a lament out of me regarding that.  For some reason I just felt the need to vent one last time.  Probably best to ignore me there.)

I decided to change the sprite of KID because it didn't look like the original.

The newest version of Kid looks more accurate, but they both look good. Magil looks badass. He looks exactly like Magus, but still retains the RD style. Well done.

The progress is continuing to be amazing and Gil/Magil looks like a great addition, though his RD sprite stuff makes his hair appear more of like a seafoam green color or something rather than the darker, more traditional Magus colors...*shrugs*

Looks great. It's unclear whether Magil had pointy or round ears. In the Sunflower scenario, Serge knocks his mask off and describes his blue eyes and fair face but says nothing particular about the ears. It's not the main scenario, but nothing suggests that Kid isn't Schala and Magil isn't Magus in it, so it's up to your decision I guess.

xD Looks amazing man!

On the note of Magil, however, in RD Magil has a human-like appearance compared to CT Magus's demonic caricature. He doesn't have pointy ears, and he's gorgeous!

I can tell his ears are pointy. The pixels are different enough for me to tell.

I like it...

What kind of tilesets are you going to be using for RM2K3?

I myself am working on a chrono themed game in RMXP, but to make it look right I have to use all custom sprites, because the CT ones don't look right with my backgrounds...

So how are you doing yours?

Aren't CT's tiles smaller than 32x32? well either way, I might be able to use the CT sprites if I can find CT tilesets... if you have any already I wouldn't mind knowing where you got them or if you could get me a copy.

If not that's fine too. Lookin't good btw, though I do think Magil's hair should be a little lighter.

EDIT: Nevermind... while looking for Temporal Flux on the advice of someone...

I found this XD; http://chronofan.com/Black/Other/Tilesets.rar

I was using temporal flux to extract the tilesets from CT, they are 16x16, and this is the size used by RPG Maker 2003.

Well, If you still have more you need ripped, I would recommend downloading that package and resizing the images by half, it would likely save time.

EDIT: I'm definitely playing your game when it's done. I loved RD and I'm eager to see it in true RPG style.

I was gonna make that "full blown" RD, but the kind that would "blow minds fully" which requires a brand new battle system and sort. However, once your sprites are out obviously someone's gonna make an RD game. XD

Man, that Serge sprite rocks! And Magil too!

I do indeed like how this is progressing.

Don't be offended if I happen to use some of those sprites somewhere in my "Diaries" project. (You'll get due credit of course.)

Are you gonna go for the creepy looking human Lynx or the big brown cat Lynx?

My "Zeal Diaries" project is here...

FW Says: Dead link.

though I'm not sure if that forum is public...

It isn't on a scale that I need to request a Kajar Labs entry for it, but let me know if you can't see the info in that topic and I can copy it elsewhere.

EDIT: Also I look forward to seeing your Riddel sprite when you get around to it.

I really like your Magil sprite. Although, the mask looks a little flat and kind of blends in with his hair and clothes. Isn't it supposed to be gold, anyway?

This is the Riddel sprite I made... its not that special and pretty lazy... but I figure it might save you some time. All you really need to do add some details... if you like.

In actuality it is just a maid's head on a 12000BC woman's body... but it suits my purposes.

I'll probably use your modified version if you add any details though.

Lynx is giving me trouble though... I'm doing the Chrono Cross version... which has a loooot of details that will be difficult to but into 16x32...

Anyway, I have high expectations for your project already, and I hope my crappy frankensprite helps.
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: mav on June 17, 2009, 08:59:47 pm
The mask is kinda taking over his face...but making it gold would make that much worse. Honestly though, the smaller, regular-sized version looks fine...it's the blown up sprite that makes it look like the mask is fitting, so maybe you could leave it? Have you used up the maximum allowed colors, or does the RPG Maker version you're using not care?
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: Satoh on June 17, 2009, 09:04:52 pm
I think darkening the to pixels over each eye might make it look less flat and not compromise it at all.

I think part of the mask thing is that the eyes don't contrast enough with the mask.

Riddel in RD is very different than the CC version.

9900giljerky did some sprites of the RD character Lilith in her (RD) Riddel form.

Then take liberty with how many colors you use on these things: you could make his hair blue, use a different shade of gold for the mask, etc.

I smell a romhack in the making.
I smell a kitten that REALLY needs a bath and some higher fibre food...

Oh, and Gil's hair shading is looking better, but I'd add one or two more pixels about halfway down, to make the hair look like one shiny color instead of two flat colors...

I'm really liking how these are turning out!

There are no more Chrono rom hacks, Tact.  The C&D shut them all down.  This here is just for kicks and giggles.

This has already been stated to be an RM2k3 fan project.

What Square is doing is really quite pointless... Even if they shut down all the current hacks, more will still be made.
The only way to truly stop it would be to hire all of us, or kill us.

ROM hacks are kind of like the common cold, you can lessen the effects but the bug is still going to go its course.

That said, I understand why they are doing it, even if pointless. With the release of the DS travesty, they have an opportunity to make more money one something they've butchered and slapped on yet another system.

ROM hacks have the potential (due to being on the same quality as the Travesty or better) to offset their profits...(in their mind)
That and they're a vindictive bunch of asses since the last few years.

Regardless of all that, these sprites, I eagerly await final products.

How many ever are anyway? Most just stop, but still get downloaded regularly anyway...

But I've said what I was gonna say about that, this topic is about (really freaking epic) sprites.

I'm half tempted to use the Serge sprite for my game... but then I'm not sure... Is Serge more a fisherman or more a bard?

Bard in RD, fisherman in CC. xD

When does Serge ever fish in CC? Just because you live in a fisherman's village and your father was a fisherman doesn't mean you have to be a fisherman too. He's not Korcha, at least...*shudders*

Well, in one of the endings he does become one.
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: Satoh on June 20, 2009, 08:23:26 pm
Well... he fights with a sharpened oar.... he lives in a fishing village... most of his life is related to water

And technically just because he had a lute(mandolin?) doesn't make him a bard either...

But my question was, which is more in tune with his character?
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: Acacia Sgt on June 20, 2009, 08:37:48 pm
That greatly depends, as taking both RD and CC into account is like he is two different persons. It all depends on the setting he was in. In RD he is a traveling musician, so a bard is definetly closer than fisherman in that case.

Ok, factor in that I'm working on a game that involves all possible timelines reaching their equilibrium point...

So, is Serge more important to the universe as a bard... or a fisherman.
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style

Well I don't know much of what he did as a bard, but as a fisherman he just saved the world from ultimately being devoured by some princess/beast.

Wow, these are looking great! :) The revised Kid looks fantastic. I wish there was maybe another color or two for shading on her hair, but that's just a minor suggestion; it really does look great as it is. Magus and Serge are very impressive as well!
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: Lord J Esq on June 28, 2009, 08:40:25 pm
I'm a little late to the party here, but I have a few suggestions:

1. My big suggestion is that you increase the contrast in your sprites to make them look more distinctive at the macroscopic level. It may seem counterintuitive, but by introducing weird color combinations at the pixel level you can perform some remarkable sleight of hand. The easy thing to do would be to look at these sprites and ask yourself which parts of them are likely to get hit with a lot of light. Make those pixels a much lighter shade in the same color. The hard step, which comes afterwards, is to throw in a few "subversive elements"--for instance, a well-placed bright yellow pixel or two can really bring out Magil's purple ensemble. Purple and yellow? Sounds crazy--but try it and see what you get.

2. My second suggestion is just a nitpick: Kid in Radical Dreamers has hair that is closer to platinum; you've depicted her as having corn yellow hair, which just doesn't fit my image of her. Then again, they're your sprites and not mine, and, like I said, it's just a nitpick. =)

3. Your Magil sprite looks more like Magus from Chrono Trigger than Magil from RD. The Magil graphics suggests that his costume ought to be bigger and a little less sleek. You might also open up his face a little bit: There's a lot going on there.

Anyhow, nice work! It's always good to see Radical Dreamers getting some attention.

I definitely like what you've one with Kid No. 1's hair. If it were me, I'd intensify the brightest colors on her outfit some more. The brightest orange, for instance, could become an even brighter orange. (I mixed this myself with some decent results.) Blown up to size, it looks like she's glowing. But at gameplay resolution, it provides good contrast.

For Magil, I like No. 3 the most...except that that is definitely not his color! The contrasts on No. 2 are better than on No. 1, but the colors on No. 1 are better than those on No. 2. Ah! Such is life...

Good work, all the same. Did you design these from scratch, or did you import other sprites and modify them?

Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: Satoh on June 30, 2009, 11:05:37 am
I like the number 1 Kid, but I think you should take the hair shadow color from 1 and 2, and mix them together to get the halfway point and use that.

The shadow in 1 looks a bit washed out, but the hair looks the right color... the hair in 2 looks like the right contrast, but the hair is too dark and too gold...

EDIT: Otherwise, I'm really liking the sprites as a whole.

The colors on Magil's third sprite are gorgeous...but I think you should stick with numero uno--it makes him look mystical, though possibly inaccurate. I dunno about Kid's though...it seems really challenging to lighten the blond to platinum, but overall number two still looks good. Those walking sprites for Magil are so amazing, I can't even describe it! Well done man, well done.

Hi!
Yeah, I totally agree! And, yeah, It is possible to make a multi-language, and even if it is too hard, we would just have to make differents versions of the game.
So yeah, I'm deeply ready for a fusion!

So, I suppose first language wich will be included will be english?
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Sprite CT style
Post by: DarioEMeloD on May 05, 2010, 11:00:07 am
I think it would be better if we do all languages at once. According to F, it is possible to do so in RMXP.

The choices are:
- 3 versions of the game (or just one and make separate downloads for the language packs, if it's possible)
- Make it multi-language with a script (<- I'm going for this one)
- Multi-language with an option that comes by default in RMXP ('switches', whatever that is XD)

Btw, we're discussing which music style we're using on the game: SNES'd versions of the Chrono Cross soundtrack, or remaked versions of the Radical Dreamers one.
In any case, here you can hear a sample of each one.

Hey there, I've been doing a little work and I've finished Snakebone Mansion and remade Summer Day
I'll upload them tomorrow so you can judge

Btw, can we have our own sub-forum for the project, so we can stop the off-topic here? (I guess the forum F made isn't working) XD
Besides, I guess there may be other people here who would like to help =P

Edit:
Musa, I've reading the topic you posted from La Fin des Temps... I don't speak french, I used Google Trans, but after I saw the result I guess it isn't very good XD
Anyway, from what I understood, there are some people there who can help with the translation and other stuff, so you can invite them here if we get our sub-forum (we're obviously going to give credits to La Fin des Temps ;))
If we get people from here we can credit Kajar Laboratories too
As for me and F, I guess we can create our own spanish-speakers Chrono fans community XD

I haven't speak to F for a couple of days, but I think it's better if we start the project from scratch and advance together

PS: We're not spanish XD
I'm from Chile and Fernando is from Argentina, both countries from South America
