Title: The Rise of Magus
Post by: silentellipsis on May 11, 2009, 08:54:32 pm
Hello, all. This may be a bit high-impact for my first post, but I've just completed version 1.0 of an original platformer game featuring Magus.

I created the game in Game Maker 7 over the course of 10 months.

You can check out the site I set up for the game here: www.silentellipsis.com/riseofmagus

Or download (http://www.silentellipsis.com/riseofmagus/riseofmagus.exe) the game directly.

Let me know what you think, and if you like it feel free to share it with your friends.

-Silent Ellipsis

*edit* You can also play the game here: http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/81474

Better watch out, with what has happened, this may go through a similar fate by being here.

Maybe... but I don't so.

Yes, I know it's rather bad timing (I've been planning on posting here for the last week and was pretty shocked to see the announcement), but I'm hoping that this will fly because it's not a ROM-hack or mod. It's an original game that uses CT sprites (and it looks like those are still generally considered ok).

ZeaLitY and Agent12 will ultimately decide, since they're the ones with legal liability here.

Yes, and I perfectly understand if they decide not to run with it, but I've already finished the game, so there's no reason at this point not to see what they say.

It's also already the name of a "fairly well-known" Magus fanfic, I think...Though I guess "The Rise of (fill in the blank)" is kind of generic...*shrugs*

Your website link isn't working for me. And I really wanted to play this, too...
Do I need to download Game Maker to run it, or does the game run on its own?

It looks like the server is down. I'll ask about that. In the meantime, you can also play it here:

http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/81474

And no, you don't need Game Maker - if you download it, it's a stand-alone file that will play on PC's. You can instead download the plugin on the yoyogames site and play it there without downloading the game.

Great, thanks! I'm in midterms so it'll have to wait a couple days, but I'll get on it. Pretty interested to see how Magus can star in a platformer.
Until then, could you please do a little plot synopsis? A teaser or something, to drag everyone else into wanting it too.

Heh, sure.

The game takes place prior to the events of AD 600 seen in Chrono Trigger, before Magus has risen to his position of power among the Mystics. For someone living for the possibility of vengeance, his reasons for becoming involved with the Mystics seem clear: they are a way to obtain more power. However, as time goes on, and Magus recognizes that he is an outsider to human society, as the Mystics are, he begins to grow attached to them, and displaces his desire for vengeance onto humanity.

It is generally consistent with canon, but adds or expands on various details.

Also, be aware that there is a hard mode available in the settings, but it is only recommended for veteran platform players.

Also, the site seems to be working again.

Are you sure the file is standalone? Downloaded from your site and from that direct link, but both times it gets a "File has stopped working" error whenever I try to open it. Yes, I'm on PC.

Also, the YoYo games plugin crashes when trying to load the game.

It seems most likely that your computer is low on system or graphical memory, then (I know it's a 2D game, but it still uses a respectable amount of memory). Try making sure to close other programs you have open before running it. Also, I've only ever tested it on XP and Vista - I'd be surprised if it didn't work on 2000, but it's possible that if you're using an older version of windows, that could be the cause (I'm running Vista and actually ran into a problem for it on XP - XP had a stricter maximize image size it could parse, so I had to break up some of the tilesets into smaller images).

Anyway, those are my recommendations - the file should definitely work on its own as long as you have enough memory to run it.

*edit* Also, if you get an error message that's a little more descriptive, let me know and I can look into it.

It does not close every time I try to close this. This is doing both the yoyo method and from the site. It doesn't seem to freeze while I'm trying to play the actual game, though... I guess it doesn't like vista or something.

I'll let you know what I think of it later.

Edit:

Ok, I'm stupid. It wouldn't close cause I didn't think of pushing escape. It works fine. I just beat Slash. I'm really enjoying it so far. Good work!

Yeah, there's even an option in Game Maker to "treat close button as Esc", but for some reason it doesn't seem to work if you have Esc do anything more complicated than immediately closing the game.

And thanks!

Heh...this is pretty cool. I'm in the process of downloading it...

But I have to say...with the C&D and whatnot, the fact that a fangame was STILL RELEASED on this site makes me happy. Maybe I can't play the big one, but this looks fun, too.

I want to thank ZeaLitY for mentioning my game in his mega-update (and posting it in the fan works section). I was pretty shocked when I saw the news, and that it coincided so closely with my game's completion, so it's good to see that the Compendium is still going strong.

Also, I appreciate all feedback on the game, so leave any comments here and I'll see them.

I've got another gig of RAM, and the game still doesn't work. When I tried the instantplay on YoYo, the app crashed and I got an error that said the game might be corrupted. Same with when I downloaded the file and tried to load from the desktop. Can you reupload the file?

EDIT: Scratch that, it works on the other computer. Not sure why, as it didn't yesterday...

I got stuck on "singing mountain"... the part of it where there is an UBER large gap from there to the other side and if you fall you land on the water spell.  Yes, I got the tripple jump, too.

Yeah, I'm not sure why it's not working on that machine, but I ran some tests in compatibility mode and it looks like the game will work on Windows 2000, NT, XP, and Vista, but not on 95, 98, or ME, so if you're running one of the latter OS's, that would explain it.

Try exploring the rest of the level. You might find something that will help you cross that gap...
