Title: Who are your leads?
Post by: ONSLAUGHT on December 27, 2008, 12:41:13 pm
I finished one of the new monster village sidequests about 3 weeks back and was shown three characters, but they weren't all the ones in my party at the moment so i got to thinking "These guys I had when I fought the monsters in the forest but they aren't my best guys, my best ones are right here after fighting that big boss battle!" And so now I'm interested in knowing, who are your three most used people in your team, the three you use the most and bring out for the toughest situations, your numero unos, your top three characters(you use in your party)!!!

Mine are Crono(surprise, right?), Frog(ooo, shocking...), and Marle(at this point many are shocked for real). I really like some of their combos like Double Cure, Arc Impulse is my favorite move in the whole game and I usually level Marle more than the other characters and give her many capsules so she winds up being one of my best anyways. I get in the 800s-900s on average with her Ice 2 attack, and her standard attack is in the thousands.

It's mainly because I level up my characters VERY early(right at the begining of the game I fight Hetakes until I'm in the 20s). Of course, Luminaire and Confuse, Frog Squash(I never heal Frog so marle's Life 2 also comes in handy), Aerial Strike, Two characters with cure 2 so in case one falls I still have a healer. All this plus Wrath Band on Crono, I have the worth of two healers and two fighters with three characters.

Lucca - If she's available.
Magus - Same as above.
Robo - Yeah, when I don't want to use Ayla to charm...

Of course, Crono and Frog are still awesome characters, but I guess I have too many chances to use them, so when I can remove them, I just leave them alone.

It depends on what I'm after, but my usual end-game team, of which I usually train hardest is Crono (high physical & high magic), Lucca (high magic, decent physical about half the time) & Robo (high physical, high magic, 3 Magic elements, best all party healing single Tech). Though I also use Ayla a lot for Charm (& general physical badassery) and Magus for his cool quotes (usually with Crono so that he gets more dialogue per play)...To me, Frog & Marle are just boring without teaming up with others, and I think it's just faster & better to go with Single Tech attacks than relying on other characters. Haste is Marle's only redeemable Tech and it's not even that spectacular, really...

At the beginning of the game, I use Crono, Marle, and Frog when they're available. When Frog isn't with me, I use Lucca. But by the end, my choice team is Magus, Marle, and Frog. Magus is the one I like to run around as; I love the floaty.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: ONSLAUGHT on December 27, 2008, 03:54:08 pm
The floaty is fun.
I always put marle in front. I love watching her hair bob about when she walks from the backwards angle. I don't know why, I just do.
And Magus is a strongly used character of mine yes, but more often than not I have him just for Dark Matter. Other than that I rarely use him for anything else(seriously, it's been years since I did any move with Magus besides Dark Matter).

Lucca, I'm surprised to hear she's more popular. Reason, she's one of my less used characters. Ayla is my least and Lucca is my second least. Her Flare, the bigger bomb(not searching my memory banks for the name right now), and some other stuff she has is good AND definetly her Wondershot. But other than all that, I don't find much from her(probably cause I don't level her as much as the others). Robo, I use him often but only as a healer(Heal beam is awesome and it saved me the first time I ever beat the game).

ROFL Ayla 0. The only time I used her was during Black Omen, to charm crap. I use Frog, Crono and Robo.

Well, least used doesn't equal to dislike. When I get used to a team, I'm just too lazy to change it.
That's why I've played CC from beginning to end for several times, but my final team is always Kid/Serge/Guile. LOL

I'm the lone Ayla, eh?

She's in the springtime of youth.

My original mainstay for most CT runs was Crono, Lucca, and Marle (there's something poetic about finishing the game with the same team you started the game with), though (Magus!) other party members (Magus!) certainly got face time (also Magus!).  Robo gets used the least for me, and Ayla would actually have been the same if not for her Charm.

With CT DS, things are a little different.  The Valor Crest and Champion's Badge make Ayla and Frog much more viable characters.  I cannot describe how fun it is to have those two characters with those two accessories, and Crono with the Dreamseeker/Wrath Band.  With the Crono & Ayla counterattacking everything and the entire party criticaling most of the time to boot, no foe or boss could stand for long.  In addition to physical moves, the champion's badge also pimps out Frog's magic pool, so there's that too.  Robo also becomes useful with Apocalypse arm/Dragon's Tear; I've heard the argument for the Crisis Arm over it, but you can't say no to how well the Apocalypse pierces the superior defenses of Magus, the rightmost Lavos Pod, or the Time Devourer, for example.  And whyyyyyyy do the females always get the best armor and helmets?

Crono - For obvious reasons (I even put him in the lead after the Ocean Palace). One of the three party members that raid the Black Omen.

Marle - Second-In-Command. She leads during the Blackbird and to North Cape, from there until Crono is back, the leader is...

Magus - 'Nuff said. One of the three party members that raid the Black Omen.

(Glenn is the third party member that raids the Black Omen.)

My end team tends to be Crono, Frog, Magus. If either of the three aren't available, Robo's usually in there. I've never been a fan of Lucca, and I only use Ayla out of desperation. Marle's pretty decent from time to time...

I haven't played CT in a while though...so I'll probably change up my team a bit during my next play through.

Play CTDS. It's worth it.

Usually Crono, typically. If not, then Ayla or Frog (because he hops!).

Second place is usually Ayla and third is Marle. Luminaire/Attack/Cure approach...

Crono, Robo, Ayla. Notable features of this setup: Crono's Luminaire, Robo's Uzi Punch, Ayla's Bronze Fist and Twister triple-tech.

My original mainstay for most CT runs was Crono, Lucca, and Marle (there's something poetic about finishing the game with the same team you started the game with)...

Technically the first 3-person party you get is Crono, Lucca & Frog...You don't get Crono, Lucca & Marle until they escape from Chancellor to 2300AD.

I usually use Crono, Ayla, and Marle because I really like their techs. But then again, I've stuck with that team pretty much always. I'm going to try some different teams for once the next time I start a new game though. >w<

Currently, if I don't know if an enemy is going to be trouble, I take Robo equipped with the Apocalypse Arm and Dragon's Tear. I always take Crono, and he is always leader, unless I can't (only between completing Ocean Palace and completing Death Peak, which only has the Blackbird, and the second Magus meeting (encounters with the Prophet and his unmasking at the Ocean Palace are not counted as Magus meetings), where you can recruit the Fiendlord. After I recruit Magus, I keep him in the party whenever possible. If not using Robo, I take Frog.

Post-Death-Peak Party

Crono
Magus
Frog/Robo

Hahahahahahaha!

After Crono I dies I love making Magus the lead.  It adds more of a "twist" to the storyline, seeing as how all Crono's allies are now following their old enemy.  Having in the lead is also pretty useful because it gives Magus a chance to gain his techs.

Post by: Shee on January 05, 2009, 08:46:19 pm
I like the makeup of Crono Frog and Magus.  I call it The Team Of Redemption.  I don't use Marle much, mianly because she dosen't have a group heal.  The only time I think I choose Lucca is Magus' Castle.  I don't Charm ever except my latest run through of the Black Omen, so I don't use Ayla a whole lot...but some.  I always thought Robo was a little bit of a buster, but I'm warming up to him.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: Shadow D. Darkman on January 05, 2009, 08:54:56 pm
You'd better be warming up to him, especially with the Apocalypse Arm. Also, I use the Team of Redemption whenever possible, though Magus is #2, and Frog is #3.

Robo (high physical, high magic, 3 Magic elements, best all party healing single Tech).
At level, mm...... was it 89+? Marle's *Cure heals 999 for me. With a GoldStud, that's 1 MP.

Marle is the best single healer, but she doesn't heal the whole party at once... ever...
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: V_Translanka on January 07, 2009, 10:22:28 pm
Yeah, how could you skip over the part "best ALL PARTY healing single tech" that you quoted & bolded, jessmanboo22? >_>

Also, if you like Cure so much (why?), then you shouldn't wait for level 89 (which is totally NG+, where the only thing that's going to bother you is all party attacks anyways), you should just make good use of Magic Tabs.

I don't remember what team I used for the beginning of the game when it first came out, but I know Magus went in right after he joined.
On my last playthrough.. Crono, Marle and Frog were my team for the first half of the game. Crono, because he was mandatory. Marle and Frog for their healing, Frog's physical damage, and a few good double techs between them.
After Zeal, it was Magus, Crono and Marle. Crono's had great physical damage when you gave him the rainbow, and it took a lot to kill him. Magus, because he's awesome and his magic absolutely trumped evevryone else's attacks. Marle was still useful for her healing and Haste spells, or using Elixers every turn while fighting Zeal on top of the Omen.
This is for a non-plus game. With these teams I didn't die once, and got to level 50-something at the end in a single run. I never took the time to get to level 99, so Luminaire was never quite as effective as Dark Matter. It's more fun when the mage deals more magic damage than the fighters, anyway.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: V_Translanka on January 08, 2009, 12:23:47 am
Why do people forget about Magic Tabs so much? It doesn't take very long for Crono, Lucca & Robo's Magic stats to get up to Magus' level and thus have Luminaire, Flare & Shock surpass Dark Matter.

Also, in CT Crono, Lucca, Marle, Frog, and Magus are all technically mages...
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: Zephira on January 08, 2009, 12:42:57 am
I didn't forget about Magic Tabs. I just gave most to Magus and Marle. Getting ** Power for Crono and ** Magic for Magus were my first priorities, and they switched tabs after their goals were met. Not quite enough to get Crono up to Magus' level.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: V_Translanka on January 08, 2009, 12:50:15 am
It doesn't need to match Magus' Magic stat for Luminaire to surpass Dark Matter. Y'know, with 20.5 being so much more than 15.5...

I like using Crono Glenn and Ayla...  Its like a cheater party.  I let Glenn and Ayla die, revive them so they only have 50 HP left, and use frog splash and dino tail.  Crono's there to use revives and luminair.

Dino Tail and Frog Squash are best used if their at 1 HP. Like in the SNES version of the Tera Mutant battle in the Black Omen. For some odd reason, they took away it's Life Shaver/MP Buster counters in CTDS. Whenever I can't score a killing blow, it doesn't counter at all. Now I just throw in Robo with both the Apocalypse Arm and a Dragon's Tear for an instant Falcon Punch FTW, even if it gets roughed up by Magus and Crono while waiting for the Falcon Punch.

Post by: CelestialPhantasm on January 13, 2009, 06:30:46 pm
I often use Glenn, Lucca, and either Chrono (because he's the protagonist I suppose) or Ayla.  Glenn and Lucca have pretty much the best dual tech in the game- Frog Flare.  Frog only needs to be at a quarter health and it's already devastating to all enemies.  Ayla and Glenn also have a pretty good single enemy attack together- Jump Kick or something.  Especially good if one of them has the Prism Specs...
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: HyperNerd on January 13, 2009, 10:10:43 pm
Frog Flare is still good if Glenn's at 999 HP. I blew through half of NG+ with that and Luminaire. I hardly did anything else.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: CelestialPhantasm on January 14, 2009, 05:53:47 am
Hahah, that sounds boring. But I suppose for NG+, you just want to get through as efficiently as possible.  But I thought that Frog Flare only does as much as "Flare" when Frog's at full HP...
Title: Re: Who are your leads?

But I thought that Frog Flare only does as much as "Flare" when Frog's at full HP...

I can see where you're coming from, but I highly doubt they would want to pull that stunt. It would only make Frog Flare even less used than Frog Squash (from which it is partly derived) and Dino Tail, since all it would do is look nice and waste Glenn's MP.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?

Hahah, thanks for your understanding.  I don't really remember all that well though, it's been like a year since I last played Chrono Trigger.  I am sure, however, that his losing HP still strengthens Frog Flare quite a bit, and in a regular game it was worthwhile to have him below half health.

It's funny that I don't think anyone so far has chosen the combination of the 3 currently most used: Crono, Magus &...Marle...Sounds like a good Crimson Echoes team though...:P

I used to go Crono, Marle, and Magus. Then I discovered Double Cure. Crono got the boot.

But my vote was Marle, Frog, and Magus. With them I beat the Lavos.
Title: Re: Who are your leads?
Post by: V_Translanka on March 01, 2009, 12:38:27 pm
Y'know, I forget which team I first beat Lavos with...It might've been Crono, Marle & Lucca though just for ol' times' sake...brought the 1000AD Trio together again...Though it might have been Magus instead of Crono (because I knew Crono wouldn't have any lines)...Or was I still using Triple Techs? Did I have the Omega Flare team? That's pretty close to my regular party (replace Magus with Crono anyways)...Hmmm...

I've only beaten the game once.  In that play through I used Crono, Lucca, and Frog the most.  Now that I got the DS port I will get to play it a lot more than normally.

Pair her up with Frog and watch as you get the wonderfulness that is Double Cure.

Marle is a good character all around. Her magic is amazing to start, so she's good for no Magus. Her healing techs are a lifesaver (Life 2, anyone?). She works well with almost anyone (Arc Impulse YAY!) and can fight on her own (her crossbow, though not the best, is pretty good). Aside from battle, she drives the story. She causes the first trip through time, she causes a few quests, she gets things going with the whole Lavos thing, and who else is going to open that door?!

Marle = great character. End of discussion.

I was talking about fighting.but maybe I just don't need her that much because I tend to level up a lot before fighting bosses  I agree that she's a nice character overall  and also about the combos, some are great.I just think she's more useful later in the game because her defense is much higher(of course).

I think most proponents of Marle bring up the Haste spell, but I've always thought that by the time she Hastes everyone, I'd have already done enough damage with a non-Marle team to have done as well or better than with Marle (who has to rely on Double Techs to really do a respectable amount of damage anyways)...People against her commonly bring up Haste Helms which make up for the time it takes to cast Haste and you get a team with higher damaging Techs.

As for Double Cure, brought up by teaflower, when I actually need to heal everyone, I don't like to have to wait for two separate people's gauges to fill up...plus, if you have one person who can heal the whole party (Robo's the best choice for that), you can focus on offense at the same time with the other party members...

It can sort of just come down to how you play...

I agree with you traslanka,I prefer one that can heal the whole party and that's why I always use frog or robo for that, and I concentrate on an offensive team.To me it's more dynamic that way. That's how I like to play CT

I used Marle very little. One of the last times I used her was the Magus battle and that was only for Aura whirl.  So from personal experience I don't know too much, but I've watched other people play who have used her and she looks really useful so I'll probably use her next time.
