Title: Radical Dreamers Version Differences (spoilers)
Post by: utunnels on December 07, 2008, 04:33:00 pm
Although I've played Demiforce's translated version for several times, and noticed some differences between it and the original one, but most of them don't change the story much.
In scenario 'The Shadow Realm and the Goddess of Death', things are different. According to the translated version, shadow hunter Magil fought Lilith and eventually won, but then he's counter attacked by Lilith and had to go back into the Shadow Realm with her.
However, in original story, he was sort of cold-blooded. He won the battle, and abandoned his comrades.

I tried to translate some script, but sorry, my English is not that good.

This section is when Magil battles Lilith.
Quote
"Since I have already found Lilith, you guys are completely useless to me. Watch out your own lives!"

Kid's souls has solidified into the Fozen Flame. And Magil finally wins the battle.
Quote
Magil rolls the shadow(Lilith) up and puts it under his bosom.
I hears the shadow sobs under Magil's clothes.
"Could it be that I can no longer see this bright world? I still want to see the sunrise again..."
"Give up that thought. His Majesty is wating for us."
Magil says coldly.
He steps towards the shadow...
"Wait! Please restore Kid! "
I pull Magil, who's slipping into the shadow.
"That's your own bussiness. Use your affection to thaw the Frozen Flame which holds Kid's soul."
Magil says snappishly.
"You'd better give it up."

Edit*
OK, I will update the topic when I find something new.

In the secret elevator to the underground:

Translated version:

Quote
(choice 1)*"Why bring us here, Kid? Is it fate?"
(choice 2)*"Don't worry, we can't lose, there's no doubt!"

[choice 1]
"...... Fate...? Life...? I don't even know anymore. But with Lynx, nothin's set in stone.
But... sometimes, it feels like there's somethin' inside me, guidin' me... no matter what I do, it won't matter because I know it'll be showin' me what to do next...
Bah, what am I sayin'... crazy talk," Kid says, smiling faintly.

................

[choice 2]
"Whatever," Kid says beneath her breath, smiling faintly. "Sayings like those never made much sense to me. There's never a case where there ain't a doubt. Not a single one.
 But... thanks, mate."

................

Here's the original script and my ugly translation.
Also this might be one of the favorite part of this game, especially the lines which sounds like those in Lucca's letter..

Quote

We will certainly win.

"....
Ah...who?
Fate...?
Life...?
I'm not sure for myself...
But I didn't mean Lynx or any specific thing.
I can't explain that well...sometimes I feel like there's another myself inside me, it is always watching, quietly, no matter how stupid my actions are...
I feel... it sounds like a funny story..."
Kid says with a faint smile on her face.

...............

[choice 2]
"Don't worry.Kid..., we, won't lose. We'll win, certainly!"
"You stupid..."
Kid replies with a faint smile.
"In this world, there's no such things as 'certain' or 'absolute',no one can make such an assertion, no matter who. But....thank you, Serge."

........

-------------------------------------------------------------
In scenario 'Homecoming: Shea's Light'.

When they got trapped inside the manor:

Translated:
Quote
"We're never gonna get outta here. People have probably been trapped here their whole lives... or longer..."
"Relax, mate. We got enough food here to last us a while."
...Funny, that didn't really relax me very much...

Original:
Quote
"We'll be trapped in this house for the rest of our lives."
"That's not a pleasant result."
"Relax, a life without food won't be longer than a week(will end in a week, literally)."
...How can I relax...

-----------------------------------

This is when they meet Mirror of Whispers for the last time, right after Kid scares Serge's heck out of him by saying that Lynx is in that room.
You'll see the mirror invites Kid first, who thinks for a while and lets Serge go first(really wicked IMO...). And in fact, Serge is not pulled in at all, the mirror kills herself instead.

Translated
Quote
.........................

"Ah, Master Serge. Is there something I can answer for you?" the statue asks in a pleasant voice. "Or, perhaps, you'd be interested in this lovely gift I have for you?"
"Huh? A gift?"
"Only a modest token of my appreciation for you and your comrades. I present you with a personal invitation into the Realm of the Looking Glass, if you are interested."
"Wow, really?"
"Yes, but we must hurry. Time is of the essence."
I look towards the dark, rippling surface of the mirror. Slowly, I reach my hand out towards it.
It feels like my hand is being submerged in water, passing straight into the mirror...
Suddenly, there's a slight pull. I try to retract my arm, but the harder I pull, the further I seem to be getting drawn in...
"Master Serge! Take your hand out, quickly!!"
Just then, a crack streaks across the mirror!
"What's... going on!?"
Amidst my struggling, I see a crack start to streak down the mirror's glass...
"Save yourself, Master Serge... Please, before I am forced to consume you..."
"What!?"
Kid starts pulling with me, despite the increasing force drawing me in! I'm now up to my shoulder in this thing!
"On the count of three," I yell!
"One, two, three!!"
We tumble backwards, falling onto the couch. I look at my arm in a daze. It's fine.
Shaking myself off, I return to the mirror, now even more cracked since I last saw it.

Original
Quote
.................

"Oh! You have an ill sense of humour. "
Venus laughs mischievously.
"What?"
Kid responses with a stiffened face.
"Why me!?(You enraged me)"

"Don't be so sensitive.
I have a nice gift for everyone."

"Although it might be too trivial to metion.
But it'll be an interesting experience visiting the Mirror Realm."
"You invite us to the Mirror Realm?"
Kid asks curiously.
"We have limited time.
So, Master Kid. Please..."
The mirror ripples like the water surface.
Hearing that, Kid extends her hand towards the mirror,
but suddenly, she stops.
She thinks for a while, then retrieves her hand back.
"Serge, I'll leave this chance to you(I give up, literaly).
It seems you are more interested by that mirror."
"Oh really?"
I ask Kid.
Kid nods her head, so I extend my hand to the mirror.
It feels like the cold water surface.
"Mr Serge, no!!"
A crack appears on the mirror.
「……!!
"....!!
what...!?"
Venus sobs in the mirror, tears run down her face.
"I am...I'm a servant of Lynx."

............................

-----------------------------------

Some cat stuff. Those are not that important to the story though, but I think they are interesting to metion.

In Esmeld's room.

In the original script, Kid throws the knife at Esmeld, Esmeld blocks it with his book and tosses it back, Kid catches the knife, then...
Quote
Kid's expression changes, like a cat who's staring at its prey vigilantly.

At the tea table.
Quote
I glances at Kid, whe's blowing into the tea cup, like a cat that's licking hot food carefully.

In a Goblin battle.
Quote
[Serge slaps into the Goblin's face.]
This is a trick of cat. But as I expected, the Goblin looses its grasp.

About Kitsune Forest.
Kitsune means fox in Japanese(foxes are famous protagonists in oriental legends, like ghost stories.).
The original name in the script is キツネコブタ, which is an interesting word.
Kitsune means fox.
Neko means cat.
Buta means pig.
But I don't know the exactly meaning of this word, but of course, it is sort of animal.

This world is used not only for the name of that forest, though. When Kid sees the old lady in the clock tower storage room disappears, she's surprised. The scripts says:

Quote
The (surprised) expression on Kid's face looks like she's caught by a kitsunekobuta(キツネコブタ) .

In scenerio 'Giga Weapon Paradise X', when they return from the Arena.
Quote
I feel as if we got caught by a kitsunekobuta just now.

IMO, 'get caught by a kitsunekobuta' is something like 'meet a ghost' or 'see an illusion'.
(In some oriental tales, a traveller finds a house in the mountain and gets invited by the host, by after he wakes up, he finds himself sleeping on the ground, there's no house at all, we can say he meets a 'fox/kitsune').

-----------------------------------------------

In the torture chamber, when you choose to stab the ceiling with the Einlanzer...

In translated version, congratulations, you die.
Quote
"Okay! Let's smash the ceiling!" I shout, swinging the sword over my head!
The wooden structure shatters from the huge sword's impact! A number of rusty blades are now in free-fall, headed straight for us!!
I try to protect myself, but the dozens of tiny razor sharp blades painfully tear into me!

In original version, you won't die immediately, instead, you lose 10 HP.
Quote
"OK, let's break the ceiling with this sword!!"
I thrust upward fiecely with the sword.
[Sound of metal collision]
But it's deflected by countless blades in the ceiling, and I fall on the ground.

---------------------------------------------------

Mouth of Truth.

In original script, the lipstick has special usage.
Quote
.......

"My lipstick!!"
Seeing the red lips of the beard-oldman, Kid explodes in anger.
"What's wrong, Kid, isn't that how cosmetics are used for?"
"This lipstick is used for drawing marks just in case we lose our way."

.......

Also the file, it is not a nail file.
Quote
"As one of the 7 tools, only life is more important than that file!!!"

And after you put the hand shaped plate into the Mouth of Truth, it begins to mutter.
Surely, it means those strange symbols written on the plate.
Quote
...This is it, the ultimate truth of the universe...
Then it swallows the plate, Magil says:
Quote
"Seeing the truth of the world, even the Mouth of Truth will coil its tongue up. "
Even when making a joke like this, Magil still uses his usual serious tone.
"The truth of the world? Those pictograph characters? Damn it! We could sell it for a high price!"
Kid says, snapping her fingers, regrettably.

There are a lot of differences, but it is pointless to list them all. Even official translation won't keep everything the same.
Maybe I will post them when I remember something interesting.

The Schala personality is much more evident in the original. This is fascinating. Do you mind if it's moved to Other Topics and the Prerelease? I guess the analysis forums can be a graveyard, but that'll definitely ensure it gets analyzed in the next Review.

Indeed, this is quite radical. Perhaps we should work on a retranslation from the original as well.

Interesting... In the readme.txt, DemiForce says he altered some details to make the game flow better in English and to localize the jokes and humor. It probably worked well globally, but I guess a few quirks and parallels with Chrono Cross were blurred in the process.

Hmm, maybe that's just a coincidence.

In scenerio 'Magil: Caught Between Love and Adventure', Kid once calls herself "美少女怪盗キッド"(pretty phantom thief Kid).

Well, someone might already know:
Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaito_Kid
Phantom Thief Kid, known in Japan as Kaitou Kid (怪盗キッド Kaitō Kiddo) is a fictional character created by Gosho Aoyama. The character appears in the Case Closed (Detective Conan) anime/manga and the Magic Kaitou manga series.

It looks just like the storming sea frozen(solidified) in time, very exquisitely crafted .
It is more realistic and dreary/tragic than beautiful.

I'm just reading this section, the treasure room in scenario 'Home Coming: Shea's Light'.
It reminds me of the Dead Sea.

---------------

I don't know how to say about this section.
Remeber the corpse in the 'dead sea'? Right, there's only one corpse, not a group of them.
It is the control center of the trap(Siren and the sea).
At last, Serge smashes its head, or he figures it out and let Magil blow it up(based on what choice you make), everything returns to normal(the storming sea is solidified again, and the Siren stops moving).

I would be extremely interested in reading/playing that. Of course, I think a Chrono Cross Retranslation Project would be time better spent, but, since I can neither translate or insert translated text into a game, I guess I shouldn't complain.

Well, battle descriptions contains most differences, but since those have less to do with the story line itself, maybe we can ignore them, if they cause the same result...
Still, discuss them just for fun.

One of them is in the battle with Lynx:

Translated:
Quote
With as much power as she can muster, Kid kicks at Lynx, sweeping him off his feet!
"Hah!"
Spitting blood, Kid coughs a little, but still, a smile manages to come through her agony.

Original
Quote
Lynx kicks Kid with all his strength!
"Ahh....!!"
Kid rolls on the ground, spitting bood.

It seems that's just a simple mistranslation. That sentence is 'Kid who's kicked by Lynx with all his strength...' literally, an upside-down expression might cause confusion. Or the translator has his own wish to punish Lynx a bit more.

----------------------

The demon summons a crowd of rats:

Quote
From behind me, I start to hear noises. A few moments later, I see some sort of creatures scurrying along the ground, running towards us in masses.
 They're giant rats!!

Quote
There's some noises in the far end of the corridor.
Something is coming.
I can smell an aweful stink from animals.
Rats, roof rats, house mice, hamsters, Guinea pigs, squirrels...
"A large crowd of rodents...??"

----------------------------------------
Below is about Magil's combat skill
----------------------------------------

I'm think about how to give 'kakuya' a proper translation.

Translated
Quote
Magil, faced with two goblins of his own, has already managed to reduce one to a bloody mess on the floor. The remaining beast looks as though it's already received its share of dents and bruises as well.
Even with no physical weapons of any kind, Magil looks as though he's having no trouble pulverizing the enemy with hand-to-hand tactics.

Original
Quote
Magil who fought 2 foes, now has already beaten one of them to the ground, and is now facing to another.
And that goblin's iron armor already has several dents on it
Magil fights without weapons. His ''Kakuya Martial art" can crush foes in the way.
So, that fallen goblin is purple all over, while the one beaten by Kid is red(bloody stained)...

This page is about the second Japanese lunar orbiter spacecraft SELENE(aka, kaguya/
Also, you can check the Japanese wiki: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%8B%E3%81%90%E3%82%84 (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%8B%E3%81%90%E3%82%84)

Quote
The orbiter's nickname, Kaguya, which was selected by the general public, derives from the name of a lunar princess in the ancient Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. After the successful release of its sub-satellites Rstar and Vstar, they were named Okina and Ouna, also from folklore.

BTW:
That lunar princess from 竹取物語/Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is called 'かぐや姫'(princess kaguya), which is '煇夜姫' when written in kanji. 煇 means light, 夜 means night.

I search in wiki again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bamboo_Cutter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bamboo_Cutter)
Quote

-------------------

Back to RD, it's used in another place, as a skill name of Magil: かぐや魔殺光輪蹴り, which is translated as Lunachant Ringforce Kick(a cool translation IMO). Maybe the literal meaning is Luna(かぐや) Demon Slaying(魔殺) Gloriole(光輪) Kick(蹴), a way too long.

I found the page in the compendium http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Magic_(Radical_Dreamers).html (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Magic_(Radical_Dreamers).html)

Yeah, the incantation translation is good.

---------------------------------

Another detail about Magil's combat skill:

In the translated version, Magil use a light bolt in a certain skeleton battle.
Quote
All of a sudden, Magil sends a bolt of light streaking out, precisely above my head where the skull is!
It instantly explodes, sending fragments of the skull into my hands and head!
"Aaaahhh!"

In fact, it is a heel kick(axe kick).
Quote
paaa!!
Magil's axe kick explodes above my head.
"Ahh!"
The skeleton's skull shatters of course, but the description is in next paragraph, I didn't write it down.

This is really interesting... Huge changes! Thanks a ton, utunnels!

It might be kind of interesting if the 'future' Magus in CTDS turned out to be based off of the mean, cold Magil in The Shadow Realm and the Goddess of Death...
...stupid as that sounds.

Yeah, probably.
But I have a feeling that besides the main story line, other scenarios are just Serge's "dream". Although it is not pointed out in game(yeah, Kato won't make it clear even if he did has the idea, I guess 一_一), but those scenarios all begain with a scene that Serge feels sleepy.

Hmm, I noticed this when i check the map on gamefaps, a certain branch is flipped left-right.

<Label 0x00A4AA>
After a while, the path splits into three directions. To the left is a descending staircase, while the path on the right extends into darkness. Another passageway lies ahead...

<Label 0x00A4AA>
We goes along the lefter path extends from the terrace, soon, we see a branch.
To the right is a descending stairway, to the left is a dark passage. Ahead of use, the passage extends continually...

About the goblins.

Yeah, goblins all have a pet phrase.
At first I thought they were calling each other...
I don't know whether it is worthy to metion, because Kid uses 'mate' quite often in the translated version like in CC which does not exist in the original script.

Goblins like to add a 'gobu', or 'bubu', or 'gobubu' or 'gobulu' ... at the end of their lines.

For example, the goblin captain in the sunflower scenario:

Quote
"I see...gobu.
So your good friend got caught gobu...
I understand gobu, I'll help you gobu!
Don't worry gobu!"

Scenario 'Home Coming: Shea's Light'.
Well, I like to call her Shae instead of Shea...

"I've waited a century for this moment, to put an end to Lynx," Magil says...
I got comfused here, well, if so, Magil(or Lynx) is really old or he must mean another thing...
Yeah, in fact, he's telling Shae to wait for another 100 years...(remind me of Dracula, lol)

Quote
Mortified, Kid is unable to say a word.
"Thank you for hearing me. The truth is known, finally. Now please, save yourself, my precious... little... Kid..."
Kids takes a deep breath, staring at the shiny jewel she's been seeking for so long.
"I choose... I choose to end it," she says solemnly.
"Place it on the ground before you," says Magil. Kid does so, and not long after, Magil's thick voice begins to echo out an incantation.
Looking over at him, an arc of magic streaks out from his fingertips towards the Flame! The scarlet jewel takes on a strange, dark color, as it begins to hum louder and louder...
 Shea smiles upon seeing this.
"Thank you... thank you for setting me free...
"I've waited a century for this moment, to put an end to Lynx," Magil says, smiling broadly. "And now... it is finished."
As the Flame continues to glow darker and darker with its new hollow, grey aura, Magil shouts "Serge, take cover, and hold Kid to you! The Flame is losing stability!!"
 .....................
 ..................
 ............
 ......
 ...

I can't remember what happened next very clearly...

 The magic seal's radiance...
 Lynx's contorted screams...
 Magil invoking his magic...
 ...Shea's comforting smile.

 And...

...a tear rolling down Kid's cheek.
When I come to, I find that I'm lying on the ground, holding Kid tightly to me, rubbing the soot out of my eyes. How long have I been laying here?
Our clothes have been tattered, and our bodies have sustained more than their fair share of bruises. But... we're all right.
It looks like Magil was thrown over to the opposite side of the room. He lays there silently, exhausted of all energy, fast asleep.

The scene about Lynx's death.
I don't know how to translate '精気', I use vigor anyway, it is something different with soul. Maybe we can call it spirit, but that  usually has similar meaning with soul...

Demiforce version. It's more detailed, but it doesn't explain the strangeness of the corpse well IMO.
Quote
As expected, these are Lynx's quarters.
 Or should I say, `were'...
Staring at the sight before our eyes, all I can do is gasp in silence, half surprised, half terrified.
To put it simply, Lynx is quite certainly in this room.
 ...However, not as we expected.
Lynx's corpse has been hastily stashed in the couch on the far end of the room. Only his mangled hand is visible, sticking out from beneath a cushion.
Kid goes over and slowly lifts up one of the cushions.
I don't know if it's the smell or the sight that makes her gag. But yes, it's definitely Lynx under there.
I never expected any of this when I came here tonight. I mean, rumors of Lord Lynx's reign have been going around as strong as ever. Although when I think about it, his reputation alone could probably carry on such a regime. I wonder how long it's been since this happened...
"It can't be. That genocidal, terror-driven maniac... he burnt the temple and abducted Shea... how can he be dead already? I wanted my revenge...!" Kid mutters, tears swelling in her eyes.
Shea... hmm... where have I heard that name before...
"No one knows Lynx is dead except for us... We must be the first ones to find out about it."
"...Heh, or maybe not," Kid adds.
Her attempt at humor only succeeds in causing my feeling of dread to grow even stronger...
 ..................
 ............
 ......
 ...
"Strange..."
Magil kneels down and lifts off the cushions, examining the corpse as though he was a coroner.
"Hey, I always liked a nice firm seat," Kid says, pretending to sit down on it.
Enough with the bad jokes already, Kid...
"This corpse has no life-essence," Magil continues.
"Isn't that how corpses usually are?" I ask.
"Generally, yes. When a person dies, one's consciousness, or spirit, is separated from the body. Normally, as the spirit leaves the body, the corpse will crumble over time. However, in this case, this corpse is aged, but it has not even started to crumble at all yet. It is merely without moisture."
"Lynx's spirit has not yet been released."
"So that means..."
"Yes, his spirit is still here, probably somewhere within this mansion."
Magil seems unusually disturbed by all this. First the phantom, then that whole siren thing, now this... even he's having trouble keeping his cool.
 We're in over our heads.
"Lynx was apparently slain by a blade," Magil says, pointing to a gash in his belly.
Looking around, he finds the murder weapon. It's a bloody sword, stashed behind a chair. "An Acacian sword... interesting."
Magil tries to remain focused, racking his brain for information.
"If a body and its spirit have been detached in this manner, the body will yearn for its spirit. It will transform into a sort of bottomless well, endlessly seeking spirits until it finds its own."
"What does that have to do with us? ...Oh," Kid says solemnly.

 Something's happening...
This room, no, the whole house... all around us, the walls are starting to creak...
There's something in here, waiting for us. I can feel it on the back of my neck.
I whip around with my knife ready, but nothing's there.
Suddenly, something grabs my arm! Oh no, get it off me! I whip around again, but it's only Kid!
"Get a grip, mate! It's just me!"
 Phew...
"We've got the Flame. Lynx is dead. Why do we even need to be here anymore!? Come on, let's go!" she shouts. She's right, screw this place!
"If we can get out of here at all," Magil adds, standing up.
And then, the walls begin to creak again. We look around...
The lights flicker. Don't go out... Please, God, don't go out...
"...Kid..."
We instantly whip around. The voice is coming from the mirror!
"Finally... you have come."
...That girl... the one from before... It's her! She's here, faintly floating within the mirror!

As I expected, this is Lynx's room.
Or, may I say 'used to be'......
Why......
Anyway, no words can express how surprised I am now...
First of all, Lynx is in this room.
....But, he's dead.
It seems there was a fight occured here.
"Ah....fool....why didn't you notify us before you died...."
...Saids Kid.
Lynx is not a nobody, there are rumours about him even in ordinary days, let alone his death, such an important event...
But, there's not any information about it at all.
But, then I realize, the corpse is still here, that means nobody has discovered it, so there can't be any rumours about it...
"Impossible, sigh, Lynx...you genocidal murderer..the one who abducted Shae...how could you die that early, you cheater..."
Kid mutters, stands there dazed.
"Perhaps by now...nobody has discovered this...corpse..."
"....Or, the one who found it did not manage to leave here alive."
Maybe Kid wants to make a joke about it to remove the depressing atmosphere, but only results an exactly opposite effect.
Coult it be, Shae...
We all become silent suddenly.
....................................................
..................................
..................
..........
"Interesting."
Magil, who was examining the corpse with great interests and ardor like a Chemist, breaks the silence suddenly.
"The corpse looks really funny, hmm."
Kid says, while stepping aside like she's avoiding the miasma.
But , as usual, Magil continues with his scholar like tone.
"This corpse, has no vigor."
"As a corpse, what do you expect it to have?"
I don't know what Magil wants to say.
"Usually, one's mind and thought--the soul--will leave the body after the owner dies. But vigor is part of the body too, they will evaporate bit by bit as the corpse is rotting away."
"So, that means he's dead for a long time, so that v..what...has evaporated completely?"
"This corpse, has no vigor left at all, nor signs for that it used to have any vigor, it vanished completely...."
...even Magil feels curious and confused.
"The one who fought Lynx, might be a Vampire..."
My knowledge about mystery is really limited now.
The ghost girl, the robotic mermaid(siren), and this strange corpse of Lynx, ehh...
Now I eager to leave here too like Kid.
But, it seems Magil doesn't notice our response at all, he still has strong interests with that corpse...
"If it was a Vampire, yes, the vigor will be completely drained, but the soul will not leave the body. And in order to replenish the lost vigor, he will go finding new victims evey night... "
"How boring, you want to say, this corpse has neither soul nor vigor, don't you? But, what's the matter? I don't understand, what do you want to do?"
Kid stares at Magil, impatiently.
My thought is similar to Kid's. There are too many strange things happening here, in the room, oh, the whole manor.
There's no sign of living creatures here, but I can still sense strong mind in this house.
This is, a haunted house...maybe...
"We already have the Frozen Flame, and that bastard Lynx is dead. We have no reason to stay here anymore, let's go."
Kid urges him.
"....don't leave..."
Hearing that, Kid stares at Magil with a clouded face, but then she looks at the gaint mirror on the wall instead.
"...Kid....
You...
have come....you have finally come here...."
......!
...that girl...
shrouded in a worn-out old-style monastery robe...
she looks really sad...
"It seems, she doesn't want us to leave..."

Those lines are their talk right before they meet the Devil Circle(Blood Circle, in original JPN version).
Serge asks Kid why she wants the Frozen Flame, and Kid replies with her past.
What is 'the temple'? Maybe the author means that orphanage, well, if Kid is talking about Lucca, it must be that...

Demiforce version.
Quote
.................

I don't know what she meant by that, but after what happened at the temple, I vowed to get my revenge, and honor what she wanted."
I stay silent, not knowing what kind of reply to offer.
"I shoulda talked more about it before, before I got you involved in everything, I guess," she says after a while.
"It's bad, Serge..."

Kid:

Kid:
   There was someone who took

Kid:
There were a lot of others

Kid:

   Lynx raided our house,
   burned it down, and
   kidnapped Sis!

Kid:
   Sister...
   never came back...

Kid:
   Since then, I've wandered
   the world and experienced so
much pain, just to get by...
No one was there to help me.
   I was always alone.
If you ask me, the idea of
   guardian angels watchin'
   over us all the time...
   that's a load of rubbish.

Kid:
   In this world, the underhanded
   always gets the last laugh.
Only the ones who don't think
   anything of hurtin' others
are the ones who get blood-
   stained fortunes.
   The ones who kill,
   the ones who devour,
   they're the ones who survive.
   That's the only rule
   of this world.

Kid:
   The great species of mankind...
   our wonderful world,
   filled with love and happiness...
   HA!
   Don't make me laugh!

Kid:
But if that's how it is,
   that's fine with me.
   As long as I'm alive,
   there ain't no goin' back.
   I'll abide by this world's
rules, and do what I gotta
   do, despite the rotten hand
   of cards I've been dealt!

Kid:
   I'll make sure that bloody
   bastard pays for what he's
   done!!!
   I will get even...!

Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Version Differences (spoilers)
Post by: utunnels on December 15, 2008, 03:41:55 pm
I saw someone's talking about this scene in other topic, so I retranslate it. I'm not sure if there're really some important differences.

"I recall, I used to say, this is a foolish world which is full of sadness...."

I remember I heard such words before, or maybe it was just my imagination? Did Magus real say something like this?

Demiforce script.
Quote
I peer around the corner into the cell. In this dim, damp space, an old man sits in solitude, quietly mumbling to himself.
"Hey, Mister..."
"Everyone.. and it was all because of me. Every last one of the Dragoons... Miss Riddel... even the General...! Forgive me... please..."
Ignoring us, the old man continues to mutter, staring at the floor as he rocks back and forth.
"Hey, can ya hear me?" Kid says, shaking the bars a little.
"He will not hear a thing. He has constructed a wall around himself," Magil says.
"What do you mean?" I ask Magil.
"A wall, used for shielding one's mind from reality. After being exposed to horrific events, tremendous amounts of pain and guilt has this effect on a person. He has made a safe world inside his own mind, where he retreats into. From there, he refuses to acknowledge anything he does not want to admit."
I notice that talking about this has given Magil a sort of sad, lost look in his face. Noticing my glance, he quickly turns away from me.
Strange... Magil somehow reminded me of Kid just then.
When Magil turns back, his usual blank expression has returned.
"Does this make sense to you, Serge?" Magil asks.
[choice1] *"Yeah, it does..."
[choice2] *"Maybe if you gave me an easier explanation..."

[choice1]
Magil continues, looking at Kid and me. "We rarely see the walls we're trapped within. However, given time, some can come to understand and possibly even break free of these shortcomings... I......"
I wait for Magil to finish, but he doesn't end up saying anything. I'd ask, but... oh well.
The mind... Revealing itself to itself...

[choice2]
"Very well," Magil says, taking me aside. "For example, there was probably a time when Kid was very different than who she is now. She couldn't have been a thief her whole life, correct?"
Hearing this, I look over to Kid. Somehow she looks different than I've ever seen her...
"Kid convinced herself to be a thief. However, on the inside, she's not as rough as you think."
"I see... so in other words, there's a normal man trapped somewhere inside all that mumbling."
"Aw, come on, enough with all this jibber jabber!"
"But Kid, we were just saying..."
 Thwap!
I stare at Kid, rubbing the red mark left on my cheek.

My retranslation.
Quote
I look into the dark prison cell.
In the darkness, I can barely see a man sitting there.
That's where the voices come from.
"Hey...grandpa?"
Kid tries to talk to him.
"....All over, everyone....all because of me, the honored Acacia Dragoons....the general...Miss Riddel...please forgive me...[he sobs]..."
The old man shows no response to Kid, is still muttering something strange to the wall...
"Grandpa, didn't you hear me?"
"It's no use to talk to that old man. He's now in a shell which prevents him to contact with the outer world."
Magil tells Kid.
"What, a shell?"
I don't understand him, so I asks.
"He refused to accept the reality, it is like there's a wall between him and the real world. He's trying his best to avoid anything realistic,  perhaps, he used to have some miserable experience, so...He's now in another world that he built in his heart. He escaped there from the real world and refused anything outside..."
It gives me a feeling, a person without such miserable experience can't speak like what Magil does. So I raise my head and stare at him.
For some reason, Magil is staring at Kid...
I can only see the side of his face...
Discovering I'm looking at him, Magil turns his head back, and his expression becomes normal.
"I recall, I used to say, this is a foolish world which is full of sadness...."
His eyes, maybe that's just my imagination, is gentler than before.
"Understand?"
[choice1]‘€"Hmm, sort of..."
[choice2]‘€"Can you explain it in a more understandable way?"

[choice1]
I answer uncertainly.
"It is like one's face, you can't read from it immediately. But as time goes by, you will eventually understand."
Magil says, looking at me and Kid.
......???
What does that mean?

[choice2]
"Can you explain in a more understandable way?"
I request.
"For example. Kid, before she was a thief, used to live a completely different life."
Hearing that, I depict Kid who crosses her hands, full of stars in her eyes, in my mind.
"Now, she won't realized she's stealing, instead, she feels like she's taking and using her own properties. This is so called 'preoccupied'.
Anyway, this old man must have some very dark and heavy things in his heart."
Yes it is...
Use a simple example, and it is more understandable!
"Maaaaaaaagil....
Your example has infringed upon my individual right to portrait..."
What is she talking about...?
Kid's fist flies at me.
"Serge!
Now you understand!!"
I was only thinking, how could she react like this...

Kid and Magil really feel like siblings to me, even more so than Janus and Schala did. I like it.

...Wow, that's broken English. Thinking it means something more like "You're messing with my image...", right?

And even though these retranslated bits are really insightful, I'm still amazed by the Demiforce version. The things they changed just strengthened the message for us, I think.

Well, '肖像権の侵害' means infringe upon one's portrait right literally.
It's a joke, of course, but I don't know whether you can get it.

Quote

In certain spots of the game, Kid throws a fist to Magil instead of Serge, but in Demiforce version, she just tries to hit Serge.

Yeah, I only want to translate it sentence by sentence, it's far from polished translation of course...

"We can't help this old geezer. Let's get back to work," Kid says, already heading for the door.
"Wait, Kid," Magil calls out.
"Somehow or another, we may yet find a way into this man's mind."
"What good'll that do?"
"Didn't you hear what he was talking about? The Dragoons, Riddel, General Viper..."

"Aw, he's prolly just into old folklore or somethin'..." Kid says, returning to the door.
"I have a feeling his knowledge will prove to be useful. Certainly he has heard something of importance concerning our situation," Magil says.
"Well, I guess we oughta help the old bloke out with his troubles while we're here. What do ya say we do?" Kid asks.
[choice 1] *"Somehow, we have to put an end to this..."
[choice 2] *Say nothing, confused.

[choice 1]
"Huh!?" Kid says, looking up. "You got a problem with me!?"
"Eh!? N, no... that's not what I meant..."
But before I can explain, Kid's fist suddenly flies into my face!
Narrowly avoiding the blow, I look up to see Magil starting to speak again.

[choice 2]
Thinking through everything that's been said already, I really have no idea about how to get anywhere with him.
"Well somebody better think of somethin' soon!" Kid says.

My retranslation.
Quote
"It's no use trying to talk to this old man. Better leave him alone, let's go."
Kid says, heading for the entrance.
"Wait, Kid."
Magil calls out.
"Maybe we can still get some informations from this old man."
"What? From this mad oldman, how can we?"
"He was talking about some familiar names...
Acacia Dragoons...
Miss Riddel..."
"Who knows, mabye some moldy old stories."
Kid replies with a sigh.
"Furthermore, under a status like this, how can we believe what he says?"
That's right, how can we ask him if he's in such a mental state...
Magil thinks for a while, then he answers,
"It's simple...
We can bring him back to the reality."
"How? Could it be said that I have to charm this grandpa?"
[choice 1]*"You'd better not..."
[choice 2]*"......"
 I keep silent.

[choice 1]
"You'd better not."
Hearing Kid's words, I answer casually.
"What!?"
Kid stares at me angrily.
"You mean, I don't have such allure, do you, Serge?"
"Ahh!? NO, NO...That's not what I meant..."
"Or, you mean we shall give it up?"
"Indeed, it won't work."
Hearing that, Kid throws a fist to Magil suddenly!
Magil avoids it easily, and continues.

[choice 2]
Hearing Kid's words, I'm about to say something, but suddenly I realize a close mouth catches no flies, so I cover my mouth with my hand immediately.
"What's the matter?"
Kid is surprised by my reaction.
Ho...that was close.
"Indeed, it won't work."
Magil says calmly.
Suddenly, Kid throws a fist to Magil!
Magil avoids it easily, and continues.

What happened t Shea's orphanage. In fact, it was not burnt, but the orphans were all killed.

Quote
"And..."
I recalls that girl with a monastery robe, that robe is unique...But Magil is keeping on talking, it seems he doesn't notice my question at all.
When I'm thinking I might be ignored...
"That's the uniform of the ancient Communion of the Four Spirits ."
But, hearing Magil talking about it, Kid scowls immediately.
"Kid used to live there..."
I remembered, Magil talked about that before. Kid was an orphan adopted by a Sister from the Communion of the Four Spirits. It is said, she was also an orphan, so she got along well with Kid.
But one day, she was taken away by Lynx's minion and never returned. Kid was still very young at that time.
Kid sneaked out of the communion. She wanted to find her in Lynx's house. But little Kid did not managed to reach Lynx's house. When she came back to the village, she found the orphans were all dead.
Magil, a regular vistor of the communion, came to the orphanage one day. He found Kid sitting among the mummyfied corpses, biting her lip while staring at the direction of Lynx's house.
Kid had not spoken for a whole year...it is said, since then, Magil never saw her cry...

About the 'Scared Host' spell.
It's actual name is 魔人(majin), which means magical being or magical man, usually, they are simple monsters(or who has supernatural power) from mythologies, e.g., Ozzie in CT is a typical example(it is translated as Mystic then Fiend in DS version).

Who's Vera?
Hmm, I don't know why Demiforce removed her titles...
This is how Lynx called her:

「パレポリの魔導宰相……、レディ・ヴィラか!」

"Parepori(Porre)'s Magic Chancellor...., Lady Vira(Vera)!"

Very interesting....

Yeah. Not sure if you've seen it, Art, but there's a theory that Vera is Marle (operating under the assumption that Crono died at some point in the Radical Dreamers timeline, since Lucca wants to place the Frozen Flame on the grave of a "friend", which, given the power of the Frozen Flame, probably means she wanted to try to revive him or something). Marle may want to do the same, and joined Porre to accomplish this. The only disparity is that she seems a haggard old woman...but yet, now we know she's renowned for magic, which has added a little fuel to this theory.
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Version Differences (spoilers)

I think that's because the high rank cure magic...but there's no really evidence that she has to be Marle.
Besides, she's the Chancellor(or prime minister). What if Dalton helped Porre to conquer Guardia? Maybe he'll be in an important position in Porre. But that doesn't explains much, since Dalton is not metioned in CC as well.
Maybe they didn't consider Dalton as a key character until the plan of the CTDS remake...
Title: Re: Radical Dreamers Version Differences (spoilers)

They barely mentioned the Fall at all in CC, really...It's more about El Nido (& Schala, of course) and only mentions Zenan in passing...So I think it was easy for them to gloss over the entire thing and who (Dalton) did it...

Another reason I don't believe Vera=Marle, is her personality.

Demiforce's translation:
Quote
The old woman gazes down on us from under her hood. "I believe you all ought to come with us."

My translation:
Quote
The old woman looks down at us.
"Kid...if you want the Frozen Flame, you can come to steal it anytime. That'll be interesting, I will await you. Of course, if you can escape from here."

I've heard the theory before, which is why finally seeing a name for this character is interesting. (I've actually lurked about the articles here for years.) However, like utunnels said, I can't seem to reconcile Marle being a leader of any kind in a government involving Dalton, unless Vera is a VERY elaborate disguise.

I've always been just as interested in the Radical Dreamers timeline as much as I have the Chrono Cross timeline. It's a shame we'll probably never get more details about it than we have now.

utunnels, I hate to put in a request when I can't offer any help, but could you take a look at the part where they mention Lucca wanting to place the Flame on a friend's grave? I'd very much like to know if that was just an invention of Demiforce.

The fact is RD was written before CC. Although it is metioned in CC that it's in another time line, but that's what they did to make their statement consistent...IMO RD is the embryo of CC, probably, one of...perhaps they even tried to make another one involved into the Fall of Guardia event than Dalton if they felt he/she was suitable...

That part is an honest translation as well as Schala's narration. Yeah, I think no one would like to invention another story in such an important place.

Those books in the study room give me a headache.
I'm glad Demiforce used some contents form real books.

Blue Book, Front
It's about a young man says farewell to a baby elephant. No idea if it was taken from an ever published book.

Red Book, Front
Sort of an adult reading. That's why Serge got slapped(HP-10). Again, I don't know if it was from a real book.
Note: If you choose this book, Serge will lost 10HP, not love points. But this event won't kill Serge, nor produce any sound effects(odd).

Purple Book, Front
About Neo-Epoch(Neo-Silverbird) just like what Demiforce translated, although, the lines below was an invention.
"What is this? It reminds me of..."
"Of what, Kid?"

Green Book, Front
About a goblin who guards a house for its master falls asleep.

Blue Book, Back
Same as Demiforce's translation. There's no sound test in orginal game though.
Note: Serge will lose 18 HP and get killed if his health is low enough.

Red Book, Back
Jakobson's thesis about Hume's theory, sounds like a reseach about space and time. (Not the Jakobson and Hume in real world, though).

Purple Book, Back
The key, of course. Although the scene is not as detailed as Demiforce's translation.

Green Book, Back
A disgusting love story. Still, its origin is unknown.

White Book, Back
A detective story on a small island in the storming sea.

It's also worth noting that RD was made for the experimental SFC add-on, the Satellaview, so I don't know how much time & effort was really put into its creation (or any of the Satellaview games, really)...I mean, RD came out, what? A year? Less? After CT, right?

Radical Dreamers and other Satellaview titles were planned to be released at the Akihabara electronics district of Tokyo. Square also tried to integrate it into the Japanese PlayStation port of Chrono Trigger as an Easter egg. Writer and director Masato Kato halted both releases, unhappy with the quality of his work.

When Magil uses the bunny to deactive the magic seal, he mutters something, maybe sort of password...
"Heat cup... provolone... soccer mom...!!"
Maybe it is Martian language...doesn't make sense at all.
Although, the orginal one doesn't either...

"SHINSHIRU,URUSHI-,HITOKAPPU......"
Shishiru=Simushir, one of the islands of Kuril Islands.
Urushi=Ulithi, an atoll in the Caroline Islands of the western Pacific Ocean.
Hitokappu(perhaps they misstranslated it to heat cup) is also a location name of Kuril Islands (Hitokappu bay, not sure what it is called in English though).

Martian Conjurer
Martian Conjurer Uru Ururun
Or maybe "Uru Ururun, The Martian Conjurer" is better.

Yeah, it is in another place...

As soon as Lynx was slain by the Knight with his sword, his soul used Shea's soul as the core(the anti-soul spell needs a core, as metioned somewhere else, so Lynx's soul lives inside Shea's), and became the Frozen Flame. The Flame began to devour everyone's soul in the manor.

I gave you some handmade cookies for your fifth birthday, but you just gave them to everyone. And, you never asked me to dance with you at the village festival. And...

Note, yeah, Riddel call him Gil instead of Gilbert . Perhaps Gil is a nickname/shortform for Gilbert.

"It is all a misunderstanding, Riddel! I wanted to ask you to dance, but I did not have the confidence...!"

"Riddel, you misunderstood! The cookies, I wanted to boast them to everyone. And about dance...I didn't have confidence in dance...!"

However, the maid's eyes darken as she continues.
"But, as everyone knew, Lady Riddel had already been assigned a suitor!"

The maid stares faraway, and continues.
"Miss Riddel made a promise to marry a gentleman, now everyone has known about that."

Obviously, she's talking about Gilbert, not another one...

So what happens next? In Demiforce's translation, Riddel gets upset since "now our oath is void!"

So what happens next? In Demiforce's translation, Riddel gets upset since "now our oath is void!"

Noelle's always spreading gossip(yeah, she's a big mouth), we were not talking about marriage proposal(blushed rather than angry, IMO).

The einding:

From far across the landscape, a deep, shimmering light begins to fill the sky.
"Look, Riddel... there's our Frozen Flame," Magil says, pointing towards the morning sun.

A dim light appears in the faraway sky. (Literally, the faraway sky becomes white)
"Unknowingly, the dawn has come." (Before someone's aware, the dawn has come)
Kid let out a sigh.
"Ahh-ahh, the Frozen Flame!!"
Gil(or Magil, since he's Gilbert) points at the raising sun(the morning sun).
"Look, Riddel...
It's the dawn for our two..."

Compared to the report in Chronopolis, you will notice some of them are missing from Demiforce's translation, and I checked the original, yes, there are several missing lines.

It was found by chance when she was cleaning out the storeroom。
The old, molded notebook, was a diary of my grandfather who passed away several years ago.
My grandfather, who had been always taking a nap under the lamplight, wrote his distant memories there...

"Are you ready(Have you prepared well), Kid?

"Hah, it's you that always mess things up. If you do that again, I will leave you behind."
"And, come on, Gil. I will let that bastard Lynx pay 100 times for what he has done.
Just cry and beg, you bastard. I will never forgive you though.
Hehehe...
Ahahahaha!!"

BTW, significant laugh...

Armory
警備室
Suggested Translation: Guard Room

Leech
Suggested Translation: Slug
A slug doesn't suck blood. In original script, they are harmless, but only disgusting.

Feral Cats
Yeah, their name are same as Lynx, so feral cats is OK. BTW, Feral Cats skill from CC is "Cats Raid" in JPN version.

Poltergeist
It reads ghost, perhaps the name is just too common.

Something I'm not sure: Kid and Magil use a dual tech in the polter geist battle ?

Demiforce's translation:

"Serge! Come on mate, snap out of it!"
The sound of Kid's voice pierces into my consciousness like a hot knife through butter.
However, I quickly start to lose it once again. She runs to my side as I start to tumble over.
With my last few bits of energy, I open my eyes, and see Magil letting loose some sort of spell, streaking towards the poltergeist!

Original Script:

My translation:

"Hold on, Serge! You've done quite well! "
When I'm about to give up to the unbearable cold, I hear Kid's voice.
I...am...still...holding...out...I...am...still...standing....
I see Kid is running at me. The dagger in her hand is shining in blue!
While I am attracting the ghost's attention, Magil has finished his demon dispeling spell.
I see Kid(yes, it is Kid, not Magil) throws a torrent of blue light(blue torrent, I just assume it should be a light stream) toward between the ghost skull's eyes...
"Is it...all...over...?"
I feel extremely relax, and my consciousness begins to fade out...

After the skeleton battle.

Demiforce's translation:

"What was up with you back there!?" Kid shouts at Magil, her eyes firmly planted on him. "Snap out of it already!"
Magil blinks a few times, dazed. He seems to be all right now.

Original script:

My translation:

Kid turns to Magil.
"...but, this uncle!"
    Pa!
Magil is slapped on the head.
"Wake up!  We should be on our way now."
"Where am I...it hurts."

Kid calls him uncle...I know there's no need to keep everything the same, but I just want to point out this bad joke.

Another joke, in certain goblin battle.

Demiforce's translation:

Hey, in love and war, anything's fair. I kick upwards with all my rage!
Hah! Its knees buckle, yelping in a voice I didn't know a goblin could even make!
However, it recovers quickly. My foot, on the other hand, isn't so lucky! As it starts to painfully throb, the goblin fixes its tight grip on my neck. I can't take much more of this...

Original script:

My translation:

Although it is a monster, but after all it is male.
So I kick upward toward its important point.
 Hit!
The goblin doesn't release its grasp at all, and even its expression is not changed. But my foot begins to hurt.

Another joke in another goblin battle.
Serge will lose 5 HP after certain action(he wants to mimic Kid's fighting style, but fails).

Demiforce version:

Not wasting a single moment, I scurry away on my hands and knees.
Dammit! Shards from the busted stone floor are stabbing into my hands and knees!
(HP -5, if HP < 0 then Serge dies.)
Stopping for a second to remove the painful rock splinters, I find myself once again at the feet of another vicious goblin!
Before I have time to react, it brings its mace down onto my leg, then my hand, then...

Original script:

(HP -5, if HP < 0 then Serge dies.)

My translation:

I run away as quickly as I can.
"Thank you, Kid."
I express my appreciation to Kid.
"Wimp."
But what awaits me, is such a word.
What the...
Such word pierces my heart like an arrow.
(HP -5, if HP < 0 then Serge dies.)
Ahh...I'm not feeling well...
Everything becomes dark before my eyes...

Some details in Riddel's room:

1. The letter on the desk is unfinished, means Riddel is still writing it.
2. Serge opens the music box instead of asking Kid to.
3. When Serge asks Kid about the music, she says her beloved someone used to to sing that for her (not only someone she knew).
4. Kid doesn't turn back and cries, thus Serge never puts his hand on her shoulder. Instead, her eyewinkers shine like dew in the morning.
5. Kid doesn't put that dress on, but puts it before her and dances. (The dress looks like petals, and Kid looks like a fairy with it. Such description reminds me of Riddel's portrait in game.)
6. While Serge's examing Riddel's bed, Kid doesn't run out. Instead, she drags Serge outside.
7. When Kid tries to take Riddel as a hostage, Riddel figures out that Kid is using a paper knife, which makes Kid quite embarrassed.
8. Talking about the Flame, Riddel says what she wants is smashing the rock into pieces before Lynx.

Some details about Esmeld.

1. Esmeld blocks Kid's flying dagger with his book.
2. Esmeld tells Serge his job/duty is to eliminate them, but he knows he doesn't have such power. Or it is too sudden for him to just say "perhaps I want your life", and then says "I do not wish to harm you".
3. Esmeld says General Viper(his former master) and Miss Riddel used to be kind to him. It is not possible for him to be "involved" with Riddel IMO, LOL

Some details in scenario "SuperXtreme Alphacosmos Police Case EX Ultra":

1. Lynx says "Do you think I spent 500 years only to repair my ship?" (he means he was preparing for the revenge for sure)
2. Lynx's weapon, that pistol, is not a weapon at all, it is called "enlarge beam". He doesn't fire beams toward the trio. Instead, he shoots a beam at himself and becomes a large octopus(as someone metioned, it is about 10000 tons in displacement). He doesn't use a mothership to attack...instead, Kid tells Magil(Mick Van Jovi) to call the Mothership for help, but Magil says there's no such thing... :picardno
3. It is not a large rock that hits Mick Van Jovi, but Lynx throws a flying ax at him and cuts into his head.
4. Seeing the rabbit, Lynx tells Serge that a "kankannou dance" from the rabbit will ruin the reactor(the Flame) incautiously. Serge thanks him and controls the rabbit to dance a "kankannou dance"...

In scenario "Home Coming: Shea's Light":

1.
I let out a deep, shaky breath as Kid takes her first step out. The scaffold gives a little, but stays afloat.

In fact, Kid hands her dagger and backpack to Serge to reduce her total weight. Then, she adjusts her breath, concentrates her mind. Such action reduces her weight to 1/4. This is in fact "light body skill", usually seen in Chinese martial arts fictions.

2.
Suddenly, Magil comes up behind us and touches us on the back of our necks. I don't know what he's doing, but it instantly calms me down... and by the looks (and sounds) of it, Kid as well.

But Serge knows what he's doing, sort of, he assumes Magil touched their vital points(a common attack/heal skill in Chinese martial arts fictions).

3. This section is missing a lot of details.
"What's that strange look on yer face for, mate?"
"I don't know... I just... I don't have a good feeling about this place."
"Aw, c'mon, mate. You never have a good feelin' about anything."
"It's just, after what we went through with the treasure vault and all... I don't know, maybe I am just being a worry wart."

"Well, you sure ya wanna keep on goin'?" Kid asks with an unusually serious face.
Somehow, I find myself nodding silently, ignoring the warnings in my head.
I remember something someone told me a while ago about this place...
"Everything in that mansion answers to Lord Lynx," he said. "The creatures... the walls... the statues... everything. If you understand the concept of power by fear and control, then you understand Lynx."
Magil strokes his chin, calmly examining the gigantic doors before us. There's bound to be something important in here -- these dark mahogany doors tower above us, emanating an unmistakable sense of intimidation.

"How funny."
"What? If it is so funny, why don't you laugh. Do you need my help?"
"K..Kid, I'm...numbed...Stop, stop it!"
"I see. That only makes the unpleasant atmosphere even worse."
Kid stops tickling me suddenly, and returns to her previously clouded face.
"After entering this house, we haven't see a single alive human. It is so unusual...Although, that old lady in the machine room is a human, but she's sort of odd too, I wonder whether she's a real alive one..."

Haha, I don't think it is unusual... even in the main story line, there're few alive "human"... the manor is full of goblins, gryphons, ghosts, demons, skeletons ....

"......Ahh, what am I talking about?"
Kid says with an unusual serious tone。
She just told what I'm worrying about, so I nod quietly.
But when such thing is spoken by other one, it sounds just like a horror story...
"This is Lynx's home. We should go asking him."
Magil points ahead with his chin. There's a heavy red wooden double door there, obviously, it is Lynx's room...

4. The booby trap... there's no such thing. In fact, it is Serge, whose heck is scared out of him by Shea's ghost, sets a bomb in order to blast the door...he's completely mad...
Magil casts a shield of wind before them when the bomb explodes, but still, the huge explosion blasts them out of the room.

5. After the explosion, they are thrown into "anther side" of the manor, which is like the mirror realm(or another side in silent hill series...).
Unlike demiforce's translation in which the door is destroyed, what surprised them is, everything here is undamaged, the wall, the door...And what's more, they are in the passage now. Considering the position of the bomb, they should not be there.

6. Those fish in the pool... demiforce made they more fearsome:
Masses of bones and half-eaten body parts bubble up to the surface of the pond. Heads, arms, fingers, feet...
Hah, well, in fact there're no such things...
Those fish are victims of an experiment, and their eyes look just like human's, filled with fear. Magil says they're magic creatures that are overwhelmed by fear of death. They spit blood toward human, because they are jealous of them, since they don't have human bodies anymore.

This is not a translation difference, however.
In scenario "Gigaweapon ParadiseX", there's a paragraph which will never by used by the game, even in the original script. It seems demiforce was about to fix it, but it was just left alone later.

<Label 0x0399B5>
<ClearText>"Yeah! Who do ya think I am?" Kid shouts, hitting me upside the head.
<PlaySound 0B><Waitpad>"You really are useless, aren't ya!" she shouts, glaring at me.
<Waitpad>"We battled a giant monster in this big arena, in the middle of the day."
<Waitpad><ClearText>"C'mon, there's bound to be more of these rooms in the mansion somewhere."
<Waitpad> Kid and Magil rush out of the room without missing a beat.
<Waitpad> I can't begin to imagine what happened back there, but these sure are some tough cookies...

Yes, I met her in my own hacked version which is based on the original script.

Don't fall asleep
Don't try to catch the golden beetle
Watch Shea
Go to the machine room
Go to the treasure room

Or perhaps my save file is messed up, I gotta find it out later with the original rom.

Oops, just found, the game has totally 12 endings.

Kankannou... can-can? Yeesh.

That does indeed sound like a double-tech, and a kinda cool one too. The uncle thing reminds me, didn't Lucca hate it when the orphans called her "aunt"?

Kankannou... can-can? Yeesh.

I don't know how to translation that funny dance. "kankannou" means "look look song" literally, was a popular ballad from Edo period to the Meiji era in Japan, it originated from China in Qing period.
Anyway, there's no need to translate it, I think few in modern era know about it...

The uncle thing reminds me, didn't Lucca hate it when the orphans called her "aunt"?
Yeah, but Magil is old enough to be called as uncle.

"Kid! Hey, Kid!"
"Unnff... huh? Where am I?" In that comfortingly familiar voice, Kid slowly starts to recover.
"Where do you think you are?" Magil asks.
"Seven."
"Good to have you back, Kid."
 I'll never understand these two...
"What was that all about, Magil?"
"I do not know. I have rarely seen magic of such a kind. The luminescent seal we saw earlier beneath the cathedral had a similar structure."
There has to be some sort of connection...

I don't get why demiforce translated this paragraph like this(it is from scenario "Home Coming: Shea's Light").
In fact, Magil raises 2 of his fingers to make a "V" pose while asking "Where do you think you are?", so Kid answers "2".
Perhaps that's what's used to test if one is clear-headed(counting fingers)...well, I don't get this joke.

----------------------------------

"How can you be sure?"
"After going through her clothes one time, I saw the tag."
Oof!
Dammit, I forgot Kid's here too...

My translation(poor Serge):

"How, how do you know!"
"When compeled to wash some clothes these days, I found among them there's ..."
...If we manage to return alive this time, perhaps Kid will try to wash her own clothes, at least in several days....

"Serge! The cat's asleep!" Magil says to me. What the...?
 *"Anaconda!" I reply immediately.
 *"...What...?" I ask, confused.
 *"I think it's a 34 B-cup," I say after a moment.

"The cat's asleep" is a word-play: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dajare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dajare)

I don't know how to localize this joke though...

The cat's asleep!

Anaconda!

"Rob us? And just who do ya think you are?"
"I am the Goddess of Death, a servant of the Shadow Realm," she answers. "My name is Lilith. Although in my current state, I realize looks can be deceiving. Having been summoned here, I took on the form of this young lady, Riddel, for my latest hunt."
"Hunt?"
"Yes, and I thank you for it, I had so yearned for the practice. I had not hunted in so long..."
"Me!?" Kid asks, astonished.
"You are the one who signed the name `Lynx' in the Soul Contract, are you not?"
"Lynx... you killed Lynx!?"
 Lilith simply stares at Kid.
"She's referring to the Book of the Dead, when you signed Lynx's name in it, back in the study," Magil whispers to Kid. "She's a Shadow Huntress."
"So... he's dead." Kid says once again, almost in shock.
............

In my translation, Kid realizes what happened immediately when she hears Lynx's name. I'm curious about Soul Contract, what's it anyway?

"Who in the world are you!"
Kid stares at her vigilantly.
"I'm the Goddess of Death, Lilith. I'm summoned here due to Lynx. And the body I'm currently using is that girl, Riddel's..."
"Goddess of Death...how can you be here?"
"Thanks to Lynx, I'm freed."
"You mean, Lynx's name is in the 'Contract of Soul'?"
Lilith stares at Kid's face.
"Impossible, can it be the Book of the Dead?"
Lilith doesn't reply, but stares straight at Kid.
I feel the temperature in this room drops below zero.
...........

The scythe cleaves through the air. Kid tumbles backward, dazed. She looks at her arm, and wipes the blood away from the small cut Lilith made.

In the original script, the scythe doesn't cuts anyone. Lilith swings it toward Magil. The strong wind generated by the mighty swing blows Kid away.

Sorry to reference an earlier post, though the new stuff is great and the Anaconda thing has me giggling. You said Kid's laugh up there was "significant", does that mean it's recurring in the game, or it's similar to a laugh in CT?

I ran a quick search of the Japanese CT script, thinking it'd be Lucca's laugh or something, but it's Kid's and Zeal's laugh that look the same... that's gotta be fun for Magil, huh?

(it also looks like Mother Brain's laugh. Heh!)

"Hey Magil, would you come over here please? Something is carved into the wall here, I think it's an inscription of some kind..."
Magil kneels down in front of the wall and examines the writing. Looking closer at it, it appears to be written in blood.
"Indeed. This text has been worn down with age. Most of it is unreadable."
Here's what I can make out:

                 ...won't la...   mu... onger...
            ...cia Dragoons....  nee...he encha...
                swor... order to... ...proof...

The sword is not metioned in orginal script, the proof of the Acacia Dragoons must be the Acacia Ring.
And for some reason, Kid can read some old symbols in this game(instead of Magil), this is one of the example.

"It seems something is written here..." (This is said by Magil)
Magil squats down in front of the wall and examines the walnut(tea color, literally) symbols, which looks like some spots.
"Smear blood on some carved symbols to make up some kind of  secret code, but..." (It is supposed to be said by Kid)
Kid's voice comes from beside.
"It has been here for a long time, the text is off and on, hard to read.
....Perhaps I won't last much longer.
But at least, I have left the proof of the honorable Acacia Dragoons here...

the proof of the Dragoons...?" (It must be the ring)

Strange... now that I take another look at the inscription we found earlier, there's a certain stone just beside it that doesn't seem to have any cement around it...
We walk over to it. Kid tugs on it, and finds that it's loose.
Removing the heavy stone, a dim glistening light can be seen from far within the hole. Kid reaches in, and carefully removes the shimmering object.
A beautifully decorated gold ring sits in the palm of her hand! It's adorned with a slender set of leaves, like those of a fern, decorated with five small rubies around it.
"The Acacian coat of arms," Magil says.
Kid tries the ring on, but strangely enough, it doesn't seem to fit on any of her fingers.
"This ring must mean something to the old man. We could use it to break through his wall, couldn't we?" I excitedly ask Magil, already knowing the answer.
He nods in silence. Yeah, this has to be it!

The proof of the Acacia Dragoons.

"Over there, what's that...?"
Kid points at the wall.
I look at where she's pointing...it is near the blood characters...
"I think I see it."
One of the stone blocks on that wall is damaged, there's a crack on it.
Something is shining inside it.
Kid puts her fingers inside and clips the shining thing carefully.
It is a fine decorated thin ring, around it, some layers of tiny leaves like fernery interlace with each other.
Along the middle line of the ring, there are 5 grape-seed like rubies ...
"The Acacia emblem...
Can it be, the proof of the Acacia Dragoons?"
Kid tries the ring on her middle finger, but it doesn't fit.
The ring begins to shimmer mysteriously.
"Enough, I don't want to stay in such a place any longer. Let's go!"

I take the thin silk thread into my hand and hang it down into the huge, marble mouth.
"That's a silk fishing line, taken from a royal silkworm. Be careful with it."
I can feel it hook on to something, as the thread gives a bit of a tug. Looking in, it appears to be some sort of paper.
"All right! We're on to somethin' for sure!" Kid says, trying to look inside.
She tilts her head forward, trying to see in better.
But then, the Mouth of Truth stretches out its tongue!
 Slurrrp!
"Aaahhh! What the heck!?"
 Burrrrp!
Where the tongue licked us, we start to feel a warmth, which gradually spreads over our bodies!
 Whoa... we're being healed!

In orginal script, Kid dodges the tongue, so Serge becomes the victim. He's always a fall guy, hehe.

Again, some details, I don't want to translate the whole story.
In scenario "Shadow Realm":

Quote
"It's prolly Lynx's adopted daughter," Kid says, looking over my shoulder with her nose crinkled. "...Pedophile."

Actually, the original script uses Lolicon(ロリコン).

Is it possible to get all these updated translations in patched format?

Alternatively I can teach myself how to overlay these new translations onto demiforce's patch, if anyone can point me in the right direction on how to do that.

You can view their sourceforge page.

Yeah, but I believe those "translations" are far from usable, they are scattered pieces.
If you want to make a retranslation, they can't not be sufficient.

Sadly, those are 6 years old, and not updated as per the translations in this thread.

Reviving a dead topic to ask something

Earlier you said Riddel and Esmeld didn't have a romantic relationship, merely that she and Viper were kind to him. But also in those lines:
Quote from: Esmeld, Demiforce Ver.
"Anyhow, for the sake of harnessing the power of the Frozen Flame, Lord Lynx
abducted Miss Riddel, taking her as his own daughter. Within that strange
rock lies a strong mental connection to this particular Mistress...
And so, I have resided here all these years, silently waiting for the right
time to exact revenge on Lord Lynx for taking my dear Miss Riddel from me.
If you have come in order to find Lord Lynx, promise me you will not mention
any of this. You have come here to slay him, have you not?" Esmeld asks
calmly, holding the key in his hand.

Is the connection between Riddel and the Frozen Flame in the original version? Is she... AN ARBITER?! She knows an awful lot about Zeal in the original too, so...

I think that is where the arbiter idea comes from? She knows alot about Zeal perhaps because her "father" knows. You know Lynx has a good collection of books/tomes...or perhaps Viper himself was also an Zeal expert.

It reminds me of some odd story. For example, in Splatterhouse 3 (an video game if you don't know), the minions of the Evil God plan to resurrect him with the power of the Dark Stone, they also need a child with psychic power as a key, otherwise the "rite" won't work.

Though that is not something famous, but I wonder such kind of stories are not uncommon, a writer like Kato might have read a lot, so there's a chance the idea slipped through his mind...

maggiekarp's question made me wonder something when I looked up the Japanese line.
Quote from: Esmeld
I'm curious about the first sentence. Online translations suggest it's saying something about not killing the power of the Frozen Flame. Is that right? Does it make sense with the Demiforce interpretation of 'harnessing' the Flame's power (as in he adopted her to make full use of its power), or is it something different (as in possibly the Flame's power going down if anything happened to her)?

Yeah, you are right.  In order not to kill the power of the Frozen Flame, Lord Lynx adopted Miss Riddel as his daughter. The living, mysterious stone seems to have some sort of mental connection with Miss Riddel (or have a connection with Miss Riddel's mentality, sounds better in that way).

Is it possible that Lynx thought the wrong girl was Schala?

No evidence.
But maybe Vera knows more.

Damn, what should we make of this? Riddel, a potential Arbiter?

That's an old theory (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,1129.0.html). You don't need the info here to think up that theory.
Or was there something in the retranslated text that makes it more viable?
