Title: CT DS - Needed Items [Contribute Inside]
Post by: ZeaLitY on November 24, 2008, 07:21:14 am
SPOILERS

Here are things that we need to complete coverage of Chrono Trigger DS and facilitate the fan community's analysis of the game.

1. Dialogue Script - IN PROGRESS

We need to rip the script of the game if we ever hope to conclusively track down all relevant changes. Having a script will also facilitate discussion as the meaning of statements regarding the new content can be debated. The script will be presented in a dual Japanese / English text file, at which point work would begin on a spreadsheet containing columns for the original Japanese, the new Japanese, the original English, the Tom Slattery CT DS English, and finally the KWhazit retranslation, which will probably continue to serve as the canonical standard. The text script will be posted to GameFAQs as soon as it's ready.

Currently, Vehek is experimenting with script dumping.

2. Promo Music Rip - COMPLETE

Someone should use EAC to make a lossless rip of the two-disc promotional music CD that came with the game, and also scan the cover artwork and disc. It will be put in the Chrono Series Music Archive.

3. DBT / Time's Eclipse - CONFIRMED SAME

Shinja has confirmed that Time's Eclipse is the Darkness Beyond Time.

Someone needs to compare the Japanese for "Darkness Beyond Time" as used in Chrono Cross to the Japanese for "Time's Eclipse" as used in CT DS to determine if they're the same area and Tom Slattery simply chose a different translation than Richard Honeywood. This has a LOT of plot bearing, so the sooner the better!

4. Guides - IN PROCESS OF ACQUISITION FROM GAMEFAQS

Not for GameFAQs, but for Compendium coverage the new content in general. We need healthy guides to the Lost Sanctum and the Dimensional Distortion dungeons, as well as the Arena of the Ages (which should include a monster evolution chart). Work is going on here (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php?topic=6313.0) and the results will be posted at the Chrono Trigger DS encyclopedia page.

5. Item List

I guess this could fall under script, but a list of all the items and they're attributes could help us separate and present the new content well. Even I seemed to miss a few new items in my run-through.

6. Graphics

For purposes of encyclopedia presentation and discussion, we need good images of the game's graphics -- especially of the Dream Devourer, including images of it without Schala, with Schala, in its natural element in the Time's Eclipse, and perhaps one with Schala standing inside. We'll also need sprite sheets for the new monsters, like the Smidge, and the new palette-swapped monsters. I'm sure there's some easy way to take the sprite sheet of an original Omnicron and apply a palette from CT DS to simplify things, but it's not my forte.

7. Analysis

The analysis HQ is at this thread (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php?topic=6290.0).

8. Commercial

Someone can translate this DS commercial (what's Magus saying?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=695wPKH3ihk

9. Dream Devourer / Time Devourer JP Comparison - DIFFERENT

We should find out if the Dream Devourer and Time Devourer have the same JP name.

I've been working on the changed items and locations, but I'm missing a lot of equipment due to trying to rush through the game. So if anyone can fill in those gaps...

Speaking about items, anyone know what currently the best equipment is for Chrono, Magus, and Marle? I got the Dreamweaver and Master's Crown for Chrono, but haven't found any armor for him yet that's better then the Moonbeam Armor. For Magus I only found the Shadowpume Robe, apart from that I didn't find any equipment for him better then his equipment from Ozzie's Lair. For Ayla I found nada, nothing better then Prism Helmet + Prism Dress

I would love to know if there is any better equipment out there for these characters

Saurian Leathers have a higher Defense rating than Moonbeam Armor, and they increase Strength and Speed +3 - though by the time you get the armor, Crono's Speed and Strength should be **. You get it in the Lost Sanctum.

The only thing for Ayla I found was the Valor Crest. It's one of the last rewards in the Lost Sanctum and is an accessory that boosts critical hit rate and adds a 50% counter rate.

Magus has two scythes, one in the Lost Sanctum, one in the Dimensional Vortex that has 4x critical hit damage. The latter is found in the Dimensional Vortex, in the Present dungeon. There's a Strength Capsule that's sort of hidden - reach it and go south into what appears to be a pointless hole. But actually, it takes you to a hidden area where you can get his weapon.

Dragonhead (helmet) gives higher attack/strength ratings, but lower defense/speed than his Gloom armor. But like Crono, Saurian Leathers is better in every way.

Well I finished Lost Sanctum 65,000,000 BC but no Saurian Leathers or w/e yet. Most stuff you find there is crappy btw. Marle's Stardust Bow for example is worse then the old Valkyrye bow. Wtf?

Where exactly is the "Darkness Beyond Time" mentioned in Chrono Cross?  I searched the script quickly and all I found was Marle's line at Opassa Beach:

"A new species is about to be born on this planet -- an alien life-form even more evolved than the old Lavos! At the darkness beyond time, the weakened Schala came under the influence of Lavos, and the two became one entity. It is now up to you, the one whom the Frozen Flame has chosen as its '"arbiter"'... You alone can decide how the new Lavos, which has encaged Schala within it, will evolve from here! Your actions will determine whether in the future all time is devoured by Lavos, sending the world into everlasting death. Belthasar foresaw this was going to happen, in his world in the year 2300. And he was determined to prevent it from happening, no matter what it took..."

Unfortunately, there's no equivalent to that line in the Japanese.  I think it's a clarifying line added to the English translation of that part.  Marle goes straight from the first sentence, about the new lifeform evolved from Lavos into talking about Serge's ability to decide how/whether Lavos evolves (because he's the arbiter of the Frozen Flame).  She does mention that Lavos has swallowed Schala, but she never makes a mention of where this new being is.

The individual party member's lines about the gate consistently refer to it as a gate to the "darkness of time" just like in the English translation.  I don't think the word for "darkness" there in the Japanese ("yami") could be translated as eclipse.  Although, obviously, darkness and eclipse have similar meanings.

I can try to put together a coherent retranslation of Marle's lines here, if you want.

Shinja, you know Japanese?

A hearty welcome to you! We need translation skills all over the place.

Yeah, the second option there just says, "Darkness of Time".  It's the same thing all the character's say when referring to the gate.

Here's Kid's line about the gate:

Kid
「時の闇につながる、最後の扉。
とうとう、この時がきちまったな。
オレは逃げないぜ!

Notice the first three characters are the same (after the opening quotation mark).

Woah! Does this mean that Time's Eclipse is actually the Darkness Beyond Time?

I sense the need for a reretranslation.

That was kinda obvious from the start, it seems unlikely that he would shift from one dimension to yet another. Besides, if it wasn't, it would be a mystery what "Time's Eclipse" would be.

So, it's the Darkness Beyond Time, or Darkness of Time...

What the hell, Tom? Richard Honeywood had it right. If this is true, then depending on the canonical status of Crono's visit (versus the canonicity of the events), the Darkness Beyond Time MAY exist for all dimensions, which brings up the probabilistic problem of applying infinity to the chance of a Time Devourer forming. Still, under the interpretation that it is simply a version of our beloved Magus and the Chrono team doesn't really visit in canon (especially since Lavos has to be defeated for the Dream / Time Devourer to exist), perhaps we can keep it one DBT per dimension (except one for both Another and Home, probably).

Still, what's with that translation? Yeesh. The only other horrible line I noticed was Magus's "Lavos has guided evolution" thing, which was misleading from the Woolsey days.

Edit: I don't have the original Japanese with me, but can anyone go ahead and compare Dream Devourer to Cross's Time Devourer? If they're homogenous, then yech, someone's going to pay in the US localization team.

More likely than not they already are.

It's labeled Rainbow.  I'm near the end of the weapons.  I'm just going to resort the entire list to be what matches with what.  It's really space taking like the way it is now.

Updated the list of items.  All weapons, consumable items, key items, and other are labeled.  Along with the Weapon's Attack, Description, and their status effects.

Edit: Armors are updated with same thing as weapons.  They are labeled by gender and by singles.

You obtain Crono's Dreamseeker once you defeat the Dream Devourer.

Do we have a list of all info in the bestiary, or do we want one? Looks like the file Dark Serge and shinrin created has a 100% filled bestiary.

For the item list and bestiary, it might be a nice idea to add where you find the items and monsters. It's gonna be some more work, but that makes it easier for people who are lost with it

There's additional weapon/armor descriptions when they add some special effect when you just select them to be equipped like the Wondershot's says, "Play time determines damage."

I also wonder...is it even possible to determine that? Does the random damage have something to do with the game clock then??

Where are these items found?

Dried Mushroom
Millennia Fruit
Venus Bow
Spellslginer
Apocalypse Arm

Spellslginer - Is that the correct spelling?

Venus Bow is Lost Sanctum 65,000,000,000 BC I believe

Spellslinger - Dimensional Vortex 1000 AD - Lava Area

Apocalypse Arm - Dimensional Vortex 2300 AD - Lost Sanctum Forest Area inside Dimensional Vortex

this 2 could only be obtained when you are in the Nu is Hungry Event in Lost Sanctum 600 AD

Dried Mushroom - Lost Sanctum Prehistory, Exile (Black Reptite) in the mountain path (i'll post a screen tomorrow of the spot where you need to fight it)

Millenia Fruit - Lost Sanctum Prehistory, Slate Imp in the forest (i'll post a screen tomorrow of the spot where you need to fight it)

there will be a short event after you fight this guys and you will get the item, it is not dropped in the battle

You get the Dreamreaper after beating Dream Devourer 1st time... Shadowplume Robe was that lava cave in the 1000 AD vortex I think... But I can't say that one for sure, sorry

Actually, as was mentioned earlier in the topic, the Dreamreaper is found in the 1000 AD Dimensional Vortex. The ShadowPlume robe is found in the 12 000 BC one. And the Venus Bow is also found in a Dimensional Vortex (I am almost sure it is also in the 12 000 BC one), but the area is the same as the cave in the Lost Sanctum area.

I also have a question: Could someone tell me where to find the lumicite shard? I think it's the only thing I'm missing.

I don't have the original Japanese with me, but can anyone go ahead and compare Dream Devourer to Cross's Time Devourer? If they're homogenous, then yech, someone's going to pay in the US localization team.

Japanese for "Time Devourer" from Chrono Cross:

時喰い

The first Kanji means "Time".
The second one means "to eat" but in a vulgar sense that only men would use (or women, like Kid, who talk like men).  It can also mean "to consume time or resources", which I thought was a fitting definition. ;)  Anyway, "devour" is a decent translation of this verb.
The last character turns the second one from a verb into a noun.  So I guess it could go from "to devour" to "devourer".

Japanese for "Dream Devourer" from Chrono Trigger DS:

夢喰い

The first one means "Dream".
The last two are the same ("devourer").

So yeah, they're different, but obviously related.

Dreams are almost as important a theme in both games as Time is.

That supports the theory that the Dream Devourer is the Time Devourer in the early stages of its evolution. Said theory is also supported by the presence of Schala and the fact that she mentions Lavos swallowing her awareness. Further support comes from the fact that the Dream Devourer resembles Lavos himself a bit.

Thanks. I had already found a Wonder Rock in the 12 000 BC Dimensional Vortex, but didn't know they dropped/could be charmed for a lumicite. I went there again (I tried for a bit at the Emerald Mountain but it just didn't want to show up :() and found it on the second try.

And Dark Serge, it's used to get Elemental Aegis, an armor for Lucca that apparently nullifies elemental damage. You need to give it to a Reptite in the Lost Sanctum in 600 AD.

Well, those two items can be equipped on any of the girls (but you only get one of each in a game). Except for Magus, the guys can only get Haste and Status Immunity, or Protect and Status Immunity, as there are no new items that give them those traits.

You have the ShadowPlume robe for Magus that gives Auto-Barrier, so you could have him get Auto-Haste and Auto-Barrier, or Status Immunity and Auto-Barrier in addition the the options available to the others.

Well, my personal opinion is that Haste Helms and Nova Armors are still the best for the guys (although you might wish to equip stuff that boosts Magic Defense if they haven't maxed it yet), and you can even get 3 Haste Helms per playthrough now (as opposed to only 2 in the SNES version).
The best for the girls has to be the Angel Tiara and the Regal Gown, as I've mentioned previously (but you only get one per playthrough unfortunately).

There are still some items that might be useful, like the Master's Crown for males, which grants Status Immunity and gives a boost similar to the Sunshades (and it stacks with Prism Spectacles :)), the Saurian Leathers, a decent armor that also gives +3 speed and +3 strength, the Elemental Aegis seems like a nice armor for Lucca, and the ShadowPlume Robe gives Magus Auto-Barrier (and I think it's his best armor defense wise). This are the ones I remember right now, I might make a more decent comparison tomorrow morning, but I'm going to sleep now.

Well, the Gold Stud was just to not worry that much of MP to cast Luminaire, but now with the Dreamseeker, the Wrath (Frenzy) Band now sounds like the best choice. For physical attacking, that is.

I remember having Crono so powerful that you could use Confuse once and a regular attack (I don't think it mattered if it was Critical or not) to kill the left Lavos Core bit (the one who is healed by magic). That was kickass.

I decided to use the Treasure Atlas function to show the location of the new equipment in the Dimensional Vortex, which I've attached to the post. Curiously there are two areas in the Dimensional Vortex for 2 300 AD that I don't remember seeing, and there was a Master Crown in one of them.

And for me Crono's ideal equipment was Rainbow, Haste Helm, Nova Armor, Golden Stud. The defense given by these items is lower than Prism Helm and Moon Armor, but I decided Auto-Haste was more useful (it's only 8 less points of defense). If you liked that setup, you'll probably want a Master's Crown and Regal Plate for him. The Master's Crown gives the same defense as the Prism Helm and also gives Status Immunity like the Prism Helm, but gives a boost similar to the Sunglasses in addition. It doesn't give Magic Defense but you probably won't need it since the Regal Plate gives +10.

Someone can translate this DS commercial (what's Magus saying?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=695wPKH3ihk

My Japanese isn't perfect, but this is what I came up with:

Lucca: Whoa, Crono! It's been a long time, hasn't it!
Frog: Nearly 13 years... You all haven't changed a bit.
Ayla: Huh? What's that white thing? Can Ayla eat it?
Robo: D... S...?
Marle: Hey, it's completely white! Let's go, Crono!

(Coming to the DS, that time-travelling adventure, Chrono Trigger.)

Magus: ... Aren't you forgetting someone?
}

... Marle's excited because it matches her clothes?

I already finished all the tasks the Reptites send me to do it...but there is this entrance at the top of Emerald Mountain(65.000.000 BC) that is inaccesible, it is there but i can't access to it because there is no bridge.

In the Middle Ages this entrance is conected to the Great Bridge. Is it possible to go there in the Prehistory?

Thanks in advance  :D

It is not accessable in 6500 0000 BC.

I'm going with Magus22 on this one, I'm very bored so please, PLEASE ask me to do something with CTDS. Once I find a Capturing device, I may do a Playthrough...

Chrono Compendium... 乙...

8. Commercial

Someone can translate this DS commercial (what's Magus saying?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=695wPKH3ihk

My Japanese isn't perfect, but this is what I came up with:

{

}

... Marle's excited because it matches her clothes?

Alllllmost perfect, except for Marle's part.  She says 面白そう/omoshirosou which translates into..."looks interesting".

Marle: Wow, that looks interesting!  Let's try going in, Crono!

I'm amazed by those maps.
