Title: CLOSED - Rate Cross Characters 35: Serge as Lynx
Post by: ZeaLitY on October 22, 2007, 02:12:56 am
Evaluate Serge as Lynx based on his character design, combat usefulness, and Tilt factor -- which can mean anything, from how much he strikes you as cool to how important he is to the plot.

Design: Freaking awesome. Lynx looks perfect for his leading antagonist role.

Combat: Forever Zero.

And he's as strong as Serge, with Black Innate instead of White.

Tilt: You spend a considerable amount of the storyline as Lynx, and thus go through some interesting events. It's pretty amusing to see most people cowering in fear of your appearance, whereas others will greet you as an ally. There's a lot of plot significance in what you do as Lynx, and as such this helps towards your understanding of his role.

Final Grade: A

Character Design: JESUS CHRIST IT'S A LION! GET IN THE CAR!

...

I mean, he's a catman. Some people don't like this because they hate furries, but I really like his design.

Combat Usefulness: Serge as Lynx is the most powerful Black element in the game when you have him. Of course you don't have him forever, but he's still quite useful this way.

Tilt: The idea of being transposed into the body of your enemy is interesting, but the execution leaves something to be desired, especially for how Lynx!Lynx acts as Serge, especially with turning into a Black element for some reason. That said, large amounts of plot are revealed while as Lynx, and it is absolutely fascinating.

Final Grade: B.

"..." Serge shouted
The Dragon Tear said "No, Serge. You are the enemies"
And then Serge was a furry.

(I had more fun when Serge was a real cat)

Character Design - One of the more unique and not cutesy lame looking demi-humans (or just freak non-human if you want to be exact on the terminology) in the game. The uniform has a hint of Magus, but mainly has a black, militaristic feel. To me, parts of it are mere steps away from Nomura.

Combat Usefulness - Coolest thing you find out about your transformation? Sweet! Now you can take another hint from Magus and get to use a scythe! Too bad it's ONLY FOR ONE BATTLE! Yup, after that it's back to Serge's stupid-ass SWALLOWS (lame). His Techs are cool though. The first is a variation of Serge's Dash&Slash Tech where teh Quick Attack & Pose For Camera segments are transposed and it starts out with you up in the air...Then comes the weird sorta summoning Tech where he gets a bunch of those shadow cat thingies to fux0r the enemy. And finally, you've got Forever Zero, which is part Black Hole, part SuperNova, and all awesome. If all the Techs in teh game looked as cool as Forever Zero, no one would complain that there's only nine Double and two Triple Techs.

Tilt Factor - When first you transform him, it's a very cool scene. Heck, you start out fighting against yourself! Better hope you brought along a dope as your third character, equipped your worst weapons, and un-allocated Elements cause elsewise, you're probably gonna bite the dust. Yeah, switching bodies is one of the biggest clichés in the history of fiction (it seems to happen every other issue in comic books), but the Chrono series was built on cliché. Since he's just Serge with a different body...

Quote
Very little character development. It's to be expected from a silent protagonist, I'm sure...I wish they could have done more with their in-game models (or heck, even just their dialog portraits)...give 'em a surprised look once in a while, maybe...Well, either way, we learn that Serge is a douchey puppet to everyone he meets. Why in god's name he's friends with Leena is beyond me (except maybe their ages)...It's apparent she's a cock-tease and makes Serge do horrible things for her enjoyment...and Serge just gives us that cold stare and does whatever she asks. Kill those baby lizards! Now kill their mother! BWAH HA HA! Yeah...I don't understand his motivation for much of what happens in Another World besides maybe wanting to know why he's in a weird alternate reality where he's been dead...I especially don't see his motivation for bringing a lot of useless husks as party members...At least he didn't have a stupid accent...RD Serge>CC Serge

BUT! The one thing people point out when I bring up Crono's Surprised Sprite Defense (similar to the Chewbacca Defense employed by Johnnie Cochran) is the one scene of supposed emotion supplied by Serge in which Dark Serge stabs Kid and Serge as Lynx growls and reaches out or whatever. I guess that one showing of supposed emotion can save Serge as Lynx, right?

Overall Grade - B
