thats something else i didn't notice that when playing Cross.

Here's an interview of the translator Richard Honeywood. It's about translating in general, but there is one mention of CC and CT. If there were any inconsistency or awkwards stuff in CC's Japanese version, it seems it was that guy who helped Kato fix them in the American version (this confirms what Ultimania says about the translation differences):
http://www.edge-online.co.uk/archives/2006/02/qa_square_enixs_1.php
For example, when I told Kato-san, the scenario writer of Chrono Cross, that I found contradictions in his story, he sat down with me and helped me rewrite sections to make better sense in English, and implemented them into the game with extra text windows for me.
Also...
How do you deal with jokes and word plays that depend play on the specific original word sounds e.g. puns? Do you have any examples?
You’re asking the wrong person here. I can’t resist adding puns and wordplay into my titles, even when they weren’t originally there. My policy is ‘Assonance! Assonance! Assonance! …And a little alliteration!’ So I’ve never had problems coming up with sick jokes (or attempts at such) to replace the Japanese jokes.
...sick jokes and puns? yeah we saw tons of them with the characters and the Tech names in CC -_-

KWhazit pointed out that Magus can accurately gauge the time the Sun Stone has been gone at 1300 years in 2300 A.D., presumably with Shadow magic.

Oh Kid and Harle:
Both Harle and Kid speak of kicking someone's arse (or derriere) to the moons.
Could change to:
Both Harle and Kid speak of kicking someone's arse (or derriere) to the moons (or moon).
Harle talks about a single moon in her quote :P
Harle:

http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Sneff.html (Temporal Vortex note)
Sorry, I just randomly chose a word from the US translation, so...
It should be "dimension interstice/gap/breach" literally, more exactly, "a narrow gap between dimensions". I will pick Dimension Breach later.
Since it is a bit confusing, so maybe I'd list the text in game and let you make the judgement:
1 Chapter name
Temporal Vortex - Where lost souls wander
次元の狭間 - さまよえる魂たちよ
Dimension Breach - Where souls wander.
If I recall, TV is not metioned in any dialogue.
2. Dialogue in BoT
ここは次元のはざま……
特殊なバトルフィールド、
次元を超えてモンスターたちの
集まる場所。
This is Dimension Breach...
A special battlefield.
This is a place where monsters travel across dimensions to gather.
Notice, 次元のはざま=次元の狭間, はざま is not written in kanji here though.
US script:
[Timekeeper]
This is the Bend of Time...
A special battlefield, where
monsters travel across
dimension to gather.
The translation is kinda a play on End of Time... but it doesn't keep the original meaning.
3. World Map Location
US: Bend of Time
JP: 次元の狭間
4. Sneff lines
US:
An old troll gave me a
mysterious berry during
my travels, long ago.
She was saying someffing
about the Bend of Time...
JP:
昔、修行の旅をしとった頃不思議な木の実をもらっての。なんでも次元の狭間になるとかならんとか……。
5. Character status screen / Sprigg's origin
US: Dimension Vortex
JP: 次元の渦
They are both Dimension Vortex, kinda confused me.
-
Hehe, yeah. I assumed that the old troll is Sprigg, since Missing Piece lists her as a Mystic, separate from Demi-humans (and Sneff chooses to call her troll instead of Demi-human, so perhaps he doesn't recognize her). And since Sprigg is in the Temporal Vortex, well...it works, until we learn more information.
-
Yeah, I agree with you, but maybe using Temporal Vortex directly will cause confusion.
IMO since Temporal Vortex/Dimension Vortex is also between the 2 dimensions, so it is a kind of Dimension Breach.
So Dimension Breach is a general term, and that whatever Vortex is a small "town" in that area, as well as the special monster battle field in BoT.
It seems the US translation prefer time/temporal, while the Japnese script keeps using dimension, since dimension travel is a strong concept in CC's story.
-----
*Edit*
http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Sprigg.html
Why the name origin section for Sprigg refers to Saururaceae instead?
Maybe you want to take a look at the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spriggan
-
I guess this is also complicated by Chrono Trigger DS...the extra dungeons are called "Dimensional Vortex".
