It's invigorating to see the Compendium on someone else's computer!

I don't have a desktop up at the moment, but I usually use these Cowboy Bebop themed desktops:

Pfft. Silly apple users. ;)
My desktop is categorised into sections, then there are subcatergories within those sections. And if needs be, another categorisation below that.
It allows me to quickly and easily access any program I want from my desktop without clutter.

Here's mine as it is right now.
And I quite like Knights of the Old Republic, as the background shows.

I was gonna say Gray, what programs do you got going on there? I've never heard of them and I use OSX. What is it, Linux? God, I need to learn how to use that OS. It scares me, though.

My laptop is not connected to the internet, or I'd give ya that. This desktop is...well, I'm not gonna show it to you =p

Well...if macs have some sort of Prnt Scrn that I don't know about, maybe I will...but I'm currently unaware of such handy functions, even on this nifty keyboard...I dunno of OSX offers that function.

...and who said anything about porn on my desktop? On the desktop of the family computer? In a Mormon household? I didn't...

My computer runs Fedora Core 4 with KDE 3.5.

The translucency comes from the xcomposite windowing manager.

The open programs are Konqueror, a web browser; amaroK, a jukebox program; and Kword, a word processor.

Do you find those to be superior to the standard Windows counter parts?

Let me put it this way; I have yet to find a reason to reinstall windows.

Most Linux install disks come with literally thousands of programs, as opposed to Windows, which requires you to purchase additional software for things like word processing.  You may already use free software like Firefox or OpenOffice, which work the same in Linux.

Some programs like AutoCAD do not have a Linux version, but it is possible to run some of these programs with a windows emulator.

Many hardware vendors only provide windows drivers, so things like the wireless networking on your laptop might not work with Linux.  Your Windows software modem will not work in Linux.

The only reason to stick with Windows is for PC Gaming, although it is possible to dual boot Windows and Linux for this purpose.

P.S.

Any particular reason you went with Fedora over, say, SuSe or Mandriva? How skilled were you with Linux before you made the change? Sorry if this is annoying, but I'm interested in using Linux, but I've been having bad luck with it, and I don't know anyone who can help walk me through stuff, and since one of the things that doesn't work is the internet...

I used Mandrivia (or rather Mandrake Linux) before.  Fedora Core is much better for installing new software.  I think SuSe or Fedora Core would both be good choices.

Have you ever tried to install Windows on a computer which wasn't factory installed?

Installing Linux is very easy.  Here are some references for Fedora:

http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/fedora-install-guide-en/fc4/
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html
http://www.fedoraforum.org/
http://www.fedorafaq.org

This issue is with some wireless networking cards or Windows software modems.  If you have a wireless router or dial-up internet, you might need to purchase a different wireless card or an external (real) modem.

Yes. I've installed Win2k several times, and SuSe 10 once. SuSe had by far and away the better installer, but it wouldn't recognize any of my nics, so it was useless to me.

I've dled and burned the Fedora Core 4 DVD, so I'll install it when I have time. Thanks for the links.

You can almost pretend the blonde Turk is Elena. God, I can't take any more CSN after hearing "TEACH YER CHILDRUN" biweekly this summer at a winery. And no, in no way was that a high-brow affair or something with a cover charge, and neither do I drink. So to my Compendiumites, cast away your lavish fantasies of my spirited dalliance in alcohol!

If I had to pick two favorites, they'd be bigblueseapaper.jpg (Sometimes I feel like Superman; sometimes I'm just recuperating) and the one with the sunrise that takes place during the movie. I have no idea who the author is, but "Big Big Truck" sure knows how to convey the utter...melancholy apathy that besets Spike. That movie was surreal. I can't wait for the Trigun movie to be made; Vash sort of balances Spike out.

My desktop at the moment? I ripped the Kingdom of Zeal map straight from the Chrono Compendium and tossed it up as a desktop. I've wanted for some time to make a GIF with the other world maps of Chrono Trigger--you know, have it shift, say, every twenty seconds--and use that for a desktop but I haven't the skills nor the program to make such a GIF.

Is that Doctor Who in your signature, Zeality?

I am, but for various reasons I bought one of these (http://www.amazon.com/DV2310US-Pavilion-Notebook-Processor-SuperMulti/dp/B000O54GRE) at a Circuit City a month or two ago. It was the only one I would have bought too, since everything else was either over-priced or tastelessly designed.

So now I'm a PC user for the next three or four years until I get out of the Air Force.

I could care less about superficial things like mistakes in the marketing and sales copy, which is why I went and looked at everything in person.

I'm glad I did too. This an extremely well designed machine. My guess is the team who designed it just happened to be the right people at the right time. Even the click on the trackpad just feels right. For something fairly small and light, it also feels quite sturdy and stable.

I'm just plain impressed; so much so that I've been using only this laptop from the moment I got it. I even lent my iBook G4 to someone else for the time being.

Incredible thread revival time.

Anyway, you'll notice this is kind of an ugly screenshot -- default fvwm settings with some custom menus/usability changes and a plain black background, but it's very much custom under the hood.

Here I'm running a Gentoo installation on top of a vanilla kernel with realtime patches using jack with the alsa-jack plugin for mixing all the audio (no pulseaudio, esd, or artsd here), which makes pro-audio a lot easier (now I'm waiting on my new soundcard). Plus, everything is compiled with extra debugging symbols saved using splitdebug and with all the source code available for gdb to make coding and debugging sessions easier.

For extra screen space, I've enabled dual-head multi-monitor support using xrandr extensions (which ATI just added to their drivers a few months ago), with TwinView options turned on in the linuxwacom driver, so I can move from screen to screen more easily and still use the full tablet area for each separate screen. Add 4 virtual desktops, and I have plenty of space to work in without having to ever minimize anything.

I'd call it the perfect setup.

What music program is that you're running there?  It looks unfamiliar to me.
Title: Re: Post Your Desktop
Post by: Ramsus on April 26, 2009, 05:39:35 pm
Rosegarden -- it's just a combined MIDI sequencer and musical notation editor -- by itself it's nothing special. I have a few virtual MIDI input devices (one uses the mouse that I haven't tested, another uses the regular PC keyboard), but since I don't have a real MIDI keyboard, I have to write out notes by hand rather than record them.

Fluidsynth -- This is a realtime MIDI software synthesizer that lets you load whatever sound fonts you want and apply some various effects to them.

Jack-Rack -- This is just a LADSPA filter rack that you can plug the output of any audio program into using jack. If you plug a guitar into your line in, then connect one of your line in capture ports to jack-rack's input ports, plug jack-rack into your recording program, you can run some distortion and effects filters in realtime, as you're recording. If you also plug jack-rack to your line out, you can software monitor as you record too, without enabling any special features in your recording program. If you have multiple capture ports on your soundcard, you can even run each input through a completely different set of programs with different filters and effects.

Some other interesting Linux programs are hydrogen for creating drum beat loops and ardour for recording audio tracks. You can also use ZynAddSubFX (http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/) to make all sorts of tweaked, custom instruments, but I haven't had a chance to figure that one out yet.

I'm just starting to scratch the surface with this stuff though. There's so many little programs and tools out there for Linux audio that it's like being a kid in a candy store -- and I haven't even developed a good taste for candy yet. Except in this case, the candy is all free.

Not to mention that as a programmer, it's even more fun, since I can create my own effects and add my own software to the workflow very easily, due to the fact that Jack's C API is really simple and straightforward.

Indeed!  I am very ignorant of Linux and its capabilities , but my biggest toy is Reason from Propellerhead.  I don't know if it's compatible or not, but it works on my Vista so reason suggests it should work on anything.??  Maybe, or maybe just a bad joke.

I also lack a MIDI controller or any other devices so I have to plug in my notes my hand, which can be painfully time consuming and ineffecient.  But it's also very rewarding, like eating pistachios.  Pistachioes?  I won't bother looking up the spelling, you understand.

You can run jack over a network transport and mix audio between Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux machines using it, although keeping the latency low becomes more complicated, and the Windows part is still in heavy development.

And Reason, huh? Over on the Mac side, I know they have Logic (http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/), but Linux has neither. Just a lot of separate stuff. If it had a name, it'd be Reflex.

It was really frustrating for me to get everything in Linux working really well though, and I've been a Linux/BSD user for years now. Granted, if you have good hardware, and the right hardware, it's a lot easier and you'll get better results, but the difference between the way most Linux systems set up audio for everyday use (using pulseaudio and the like) and the way you handle pro-audio is so significant and the documentation so bad that it's almost like being lost in a labyrinth with no directions. If I weren't both used to Unix systems and also a programmer, I think I would've just bought some decent $500 software and a high quality soundcard -- maybe use a Mac too.

A few distributions like Ubuntu Studio are getting close to an out of box setup that's not bad though. I imagine a lot of teenagers with plenty of free time and not a whole lot of cash could still do a lot of cool stuff with Linux, and then profit off of it.

Just for the sake of amusement, a completely different Linux desktop:

Like Ramsus, I'm running Gentoo.  Unlike him, I'm also running KDE (bit of a hog, compared to fvwm or similar lightweight window managers, but I'm kind of used to it).  Wallpaper courtesy of Digital Blasphemy.

What's crazy is that Firefox, all by itself, tends to use up more memory than any desktop environment does if you leave it running for more than a few hours, but when you have 8GB of memory installed, saving on resources doesn't really doesn't matter. The memory manager hasn't swapped anything out to disk even once on my system the entire time I've had it on -- I might as well just get rid of my swap partition. Even if I used KDE or Gnome, it'd be the same story.

Instead, when you have 4 seamless 2880x900 pixel virtual desktops, there's almost no reason to need a crowded little taskbar anywhere, because you stop layering or maxmizing windows.Throw in the fact that I just use the commandline for everything and never got into the habit of using file managers (to include when I had an iBook and used OS X all the time), you can pretty much see why I stick to fvwm. Now if only Firefox would let you tear off tabs as new windows.

I'd use a completely different setup on a mobile system with a small screen like a typical laptop though. FVWM just isn't meant for small screens.

I tend to restart Firefox whenever it manages to bloat itself up to the point where it's eating 30% or so of my RAM--this is an older comp, so I've only got 1GB.  Usually, that's every couple of days.  I'd hoped that they'd fixed that leak in Firefox 3 (haven't upgraded from 2.0.0.19 yet because of a problem with an extension)--is it really still there?  Urgh.

I'd probably maximise windows a lot of the time even if I were running a much larger display, simply because I find that seeing bits and pieces of other stuff beside or sticking out from under the window I'm working with is distracting when I'm doing certain sorts of things.  ::Shrug::

I have no clue how much memory or RAM this thing has. All I know about it is that we got it in 2003 and it is LOUD. Like, really loud.

My desktop right now is cluttered... maybe when I do some cleaning I'll post a pic or something. ... and maybe after I change the wallpaper...

Do you prefer this set up? I don't have a midi keyboard; my sequencer uses a score notation and I actually prefer it, because it means that, tedious as that can be, my compositions are not limited by my technical skill as a musician (which is not very good).

I've got a gig of RAM on both computers and run Firefox without too much problem. Supposedly, it's not a memory leak, as there's things you can do to reduce the RAM usage of FF... I need to go back and check the settings on mine, though...

Sorry, but it is a leak.

Three completely different Firefox profiles, one on default settings, the others tuned and tweaked for various purposes, to the point that I doubt my normal browsing profile has any significant parameters in common with the default setup.  Memory usage in all of them grows with each page loaded or reloaded, and never goes down, even after the tab or window into which each page was loaded is closed.

There's no reason for the memory usage to gradually grow by four times the disk cache size or more when the set of pages being displayed is unchanged.  "Leak" is the only conclusion that makes sense.  It's possible that it only affects the Linux, or even the 64-bit Linux, version, however.

I think you missed the word "supposedly" in my post. According to Windows Task Manager, FF is using 151,000k right now. I searched about it not too long ago and they say it's not a memory leak, but, like you said, when it doesn't decrease after closing all the tabs, there's something wrong, and it's not all my add-ons.

I usually just rotate a picture for the desktop...Colbert one is what I've been rockin' for a long time now.  The Cromartie one was a mainstay for a long time.  If you've seen the actual play the Int. comes from then it adds to the awesomeness.  (picked off Peyton Manning).

Once you click "Reply" (gotta do that instead of a Quick Reply), just click on "Additional Options" under the text imput box and it should be fairly self-explainatory how to attach from there...You might have to save bigger pics as .jpg or something to fit the size requirement though...

If it helps, Reply isn't a button or anything. You're just looking for a text link in a row with some others at the top or bottom of each page of threads.

Okay, even though it's still a mess and I need to get rid of some shit, here is my desktop. I must ask, though, V, what is that browser you're running? I've never seen anything like it. If anyone's interested in how Chrome looks, feel free to ask me.

Is fairly easy to process-of-elimination (isn't a folder, a player or an emulator) my desktop to figure out what it is: Safari.

I've never seen Safari. It looks pretty cool. Is it easy to work with?

I love Chrome's new tab system, though. It shows a bunch of pictures of your most visited sites, while on the side is your most recent bookmarks and closed tabs. You can change that if you want, but I love it.

It was either that or Firefox, and you(V) obviously don't have a mac.

I like how Chrome looks. But haven't had much experience with it. I heart firefox, and will post my desktop when I leave school in like 2 mins.
Safari is fast, and stable. Give it a whirl!!

Edit: Thar she blows! Minimalist, anticipatory, dare I say efficient? Nay. She's just an xp desktop with a Zune theme and a Crimson Echoes background I found somewhere (which I like because it's just the C, and in turn is Chrono-all-encompassing-including-the-Compendium). Also, my monitor is an Insignia 32 inch HDTV, if that's worth noting. Nothing to brag about though, as sitting back on the couch and going to any forum is fucking hard to read.

Um... later today I'll get a Chrome screenshot up. I don't want to now, though.

Google "Zune Theme". It came with later versions of XP, and I had to download it as soon as I saw it on my friend's computer. I always hated the default colors of XP. The Zune one is more "Halloweeny" from the orange Start button and the orange "X". I like that it's black, though. Watching movies is better with a black background, paintings are better when matted, and it's only right that the computer screen should work with the same logic, IMO.

The CE wallpapers were included in one of ZeaLitY's news updates. They're in the first post HERE (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,7002.0.html). Looks like you're kinda covering yours up with all them icons though...>_>

Not intentionally, but I like the icons I use most in the center of the screen. I hate having everything in a corner. That's where menus and toolbars go. It's still a sweet background though, even if you can't see it!  :)

I like to keep my icons in the corners/edges so I can see my wallpaper. I don't like having a bunch of toolbars and such cluttering everything up. I tried playing with the toolbar a little on my Vista-lization theme thing for XP, but just preferred without it.

There should be a button to the right of your F12 button that says [prtsc]. Press that. That button takes a screenshot of whatever is on your screen at the moment. Afterward, open up Microsoft Paint, or the Mac equivalent and press Ctrl+V to paste it. Then save it, and you're done.

Command + Shift + 4 = You can select the area for the screenshot
Command + Shift + 4 - Space = You can take a screenshot of a window

I wanted one of those, but the crappiest one costs around 3k USD in my lame country.  :picardno
