Title: I'm back
Post by: teh Schala on October 09, 2005, 11:14:08 am
Hey everyone, first of all, let me apologize deeply for my absence.  Several things have gotten in the way of me getting here regularly to do anything at all.

First, my workplace has cracked down on Internet use, and I used to do a lot of Compendium-browsing at work.  So that's hindered me.

Second, Hurricane Rita.  My girlfriend/almost-fiance Katie lives in Houston and needed a place to stay that week, so of course she came up here.  She also just needed some emotional support as she continues on with some new plans in her life...  She finished high school early (finished last week actually) and started to attend massage therapy school...  Which puts her on track with her plans to move up here around January.  So I've been spending a lot of time with her, either in person or on the phone.

On top of that, there's the CT Remake Petition and all that jazz; plus a friend of mine recently suggested starting a private server of Lineage ][, so I've been checking into some numbers on that...  (By the way if anyone would like to help out with donations to get us up and running there, my PayPal address is Jacob@RSJames.biz...  Bigger donations will also net you more power in the game when we get launched ;))

So now, hopefully I will have a little more time for this place. :)  I'll just have to discipline myself to keep coming here and check on things and all that. :)  (Previously I was having to discipline myself NOT to, because I knew if I came here I'd be sitting and making replies for 3-4 hours!)

Who's ready to work?

Actually, the project is on official hiatus at the moment, so enjoy your gal.

Check in regularly though, it probably won't last much longer.

Who put it on hiatus and for what?

I did because of specific restraints.

Namely, the location of bitmath sets.

(I know hex. Please stop trying to teach me hex. ;>_>)

It would hurt immeasurably to see it die.

Damn it, I need to finish the story.  I've got some spare time before classes start today.  I think the amount of pain I've been through in the last couple of weeks ought to provide all the tackling fuel that could ever be needed.

Contrary to how a few naysayers feel, it isn't dead.

Don't worry. =D

Hadriel, could you PM me your phone number?  We STILL should get together for lunch sometime to finish up that plot. :)

*wakes up*

..eh? <_<

Anyway, yeah. The bitmath is hindering our ability to program decent battles that start up when you enter a specific area. That, and school's been biting me in the ass. =/

Hadriel,  I'm still around, and have repeatedly volunteered to help with story/script, whatever.

Just PM or IM me, anytime.  Unless I'm away, in which case don't IM me. ;)  But seriously, if I can help, I want to.

As of now, it's off of hiatus, though I'm not sure if we can get a lot done at present.

Still, it can't hurt to press forward and get some stuff done.

I'd say mapping can still be done, right?

Yeah, that's why I took it off hiatus, as a matter of fact. >_>;

I am still here and read to beta test part or all the game.

OK, here's my thoughts on how Chronopolis should be laid out.  Send all flames to...

So... by the time of Chrono Cross, the scientists totally rebuild Chronopolis into a different building, don't they?
Title: I'm back
Post by: teh Schala on October 15, 2005, 04:20:27 pm
Crap, I forgot about Cross.

Does it have to be the same building?
Title: I'm back
Post by: Exodus on October 15, 2005, 05:21:34 pm
Preferably, yes.

But just like in Cross how they added to Lucca's house, I think it stands to reason that we can add to Chronopolis as well.

Hmm...  Well, this Chronopolis is not yet running off the Frozen Flame, and the Flame-dependent Chronopolis could just be that it's built differently with vs without the FF (or they rebuild it or whatever), so I think we can get away with the design here.  And we still have to design the dungeon. =P

So....do you want some coding work done on it?

Dispatch chamber
I imagine this will be similar to EoT.  Would it be pillars of light still?  Maybe it could be little "time capsules" you activate.

Melchior's room:
I'm imagining this is just a shop that changes dependant on the story line.  So that's just text and check Storyline conditionals.

Epoch
Another steal...but are you doing it Belthasar's room style or EoT style?

The Dungeon
Bit more hard, I'm not sure what the dungeon entails (fights/puzzles, one screen/multiple screens), I suppose a time limit for puzzles is easy but I'm not sure how the "wait" function works if you go into battles.

But yea, the base code for this doesn't seem that bad, course for final version we'll have to get a bit more organized (define which "story values" correspond to each plot segment).  I'm glad were starting with this room though cause it'll make for a good debug room later on.

So if you do want some coding work done I'm free.

Whatever we decide to do for the Chronopolis layout will be easy enough in TF.  I'll try and make an itty bitty layout for a 2D version of it.

Quick, to the photoshop!

Hadriel. AIM. Now.

Post by: teh Schala on October 16, 2005, 12:45:43 pm
Just say it in here, man...

As far as coding, if we can get that done, that'd be great.  I actually just meant we needed to get the maps laid out in TF so that can be done ahead-of-time.

Style...  Probably it would use the same tileset as Belthasar's areas, but it should end up looking like (layout-wise) the EOT-style dock where the Epoch is floating just off the side of the dock.  (I know you couldn't SEE the Epoch from the dock in EOT; maybe we can have it so you can see it in this one.)

It was completely unrelated to the project, and didn't need to be stated here.

OK...long as you just know it looks like it would have been related to it, since you went to the trouble to make a post for all to see, rather than PMing him.  Can't be keeping secrets in this thing, you know! ;)

Ah, but you see, it was an attention grabber. He'd more than likely come back to this topic before he had checked his Private Message box.

K.  Is the epoch going to be in another room, cause you'd have to use two maps I think since the Belthasar style epoch tileset doesn't have to many tiles (no computers or anything like that).

Once you finish the mapping then send me a copy and I'll throw together a little bit of code for it if you want.  We can add an exit to the 1000 ad overworld that leads to this room, and from then on use it as a debug room, we can simply change the "teleporters" to whatever the current location we're working on is.

Sorry if i'm overstepping bounds here, just seems like a good idea

Overstepping the bounds? Not at all. =P

Please continue.

Fresh ideas are the pinnacle of good projects.

I agree 100%.  Sounds good.

On the graphic I showed on Page 1, each time the shade of gray changes, that's a new room.  So the "Epoch Room" consists of the actual docking bay itself, and a short hallway branching off from the upper left-hand corner.  (I made this in MS Excel, and didn't really feel like going through the pain it would have caused to narrow down that cell so it'd be a "short" hallway.  It would have meant messing with the Frozen Flame Room too, and I wasn't in the mood.)

So the hall way between Melchior and the Frozen flame is a whole new "location"?

That applies doubly when I'm accessing my account half-drunk from a friend's apartment and the guys are yelling at me to come play some Mortal Kombat Deception.

Heh, I suck so bad at that game.  You'd figure I'd do at least decent because I rock so hard at Soul Calibur, but noooooooo, I don't know any of the controls for PS2.

It can be tucked into the same map as the others, but yeah, it's its own location...  Mainly just there for the player to see stuff like (a) a bunch of computers with filler information on the history we've constructed, or (b) a big series of windows with a view of the world in the new future.  If we go with B, Crono, Marle and Lucca could have a moment in an event to view the fruits of their previous labor.

Should we break the whole "silent protagonist" enigma?

I feel it would be great fanservice to give Crono some lines, though a few may disagree.

I vote no

Indeed.

For reference, may I hear why you feel this way?

I for one didn't like it, but the vast majority of people outside of the Compendium dislike the fact that both Serge and Crono never speak.

Mainly cause the Dream Team felt that he doesn't need to talk, and were doing this (atleast I feel) as a tribute to the dream team.

Plus, if he talked it wouldn't feel as much like Trigger/Cross.  It's a small detail that reminds you that you're playing a Chrono game.

Can't argue with valid reasoning.

I vote yes.  I brought up a plot point with ZeaLitY some time ago (before Ex and I became directors) that during the Breaking Point sequence, Crono and Lavos had a lengthy exchange which would require us to break with tradition and have Crono speak.

ZeaLitY, I think, also mentioned that he would like to have Crono speak this time around.  I think one of the main reasons here is to give him a greater depth of character (which some may not like since he had NO depth previously, and adding new dimensions to his personality may get in the way of how some people imagine Crono), and Crono really doesn't even seem to be the main character this time around.  It's more of a "this is about everyone" story, and Crono is just the first guy you see out of the group.

We should certainly remove the limiter that prevents you from removing Crono from the head of the active party.

How is the mapping of Chronopolis going?  If you've picked the Map and Location make sure you add them to the "change thread"
