Ok so when you are on the Blackbird (I think that's what it's called, all of a sudden I can't remember. LOL) and Dalton takes away all your weapons and possession, why can't you use magic? There's really no reason to not being able to use magic before you get your possessions back, Dalton can't take magic from you!!
I just always found this odd and was curious what other thought.
-
I always rationalized it by saying the party members focus their power through their weapons. So it's like taking away a wizard's magic wand. Ayla has no need of such things. And Robo... I guess Dalton's men took away his internal lasers and stuff too.
Of course, it's actually just a way to justify a stealth sequence. :P
-
They were too squishy in a fight without armor.
It would be technically doable - Remove all physical techs known, and disable the attack command temporarily... and make new combat sprites that don't have weapons.
-
Wait, you can't use magic on the Blackbird while you roam about trying to find your weapons?
I have seemingly forgotten this fact.
-
Anyone weaponless can't participate in battle.
-
Yes it suuuucks!!
Honestly, I figured that it was too difficult for them to do at the time, so everything was taken away. But if you remember Spekkio, he says something to the effect of, magic is from the heart, so I never thought their weapons had anything to do with it. They do with techs, but not magic, the way I see it. I know I'm being picky, but it always annoyed the hell out me. Ha ha!
-
It's definitely doable from a technical standpoint. There's already code to hide your inventory and current equipment. Sprites would be the hardest part.
- Have a list of magical techs. Backup the currently known techs.
- Erase the non-magical techs from the known list. (AND the magic list with the known list)
- Use code similar to Lock/Lock All to disable normal attacks.
- When a character gets their equipment back, restore the physical techs (OR the backup with the current list).
- If a character learns a new tech while weaponless, store it to the backup if it's physical.
- Change a PC's battle sprite if it's weaponless.
It would be something doable as a hack, but it would take some effort.
-
Well now it makes me wonder why they didn't do it that way since it was doable at the time. I suppose we'll never know! Perhaps they didn't think it completely through is all I can think of. Thanks for the info Mauron!
-
I think Razig was accurate on the real reasoning.
-
What was the reasoning, or do you have a link to where I could find it? I'm curious!
-
See the second post in this topic. :P
-
Ha ha silly me! Thanks Mauron!

Speaking of this part of the game, I only just realized on my latest playthrough that Frog can still equip the Masamune when your weapons are taken, but it's not equipped by default. Was this changed in the DS version or was it always a thing?
-
I'm not sure, to be honest. I never tried that but I'm going to have to try it now! Oh no, another playthrough! Ha ha ha!!
-
Hmm... Fast and strong.
Ss... i havenīt Crono :/ ...
... Well... New game + this is...
-
Oh, didn't knew that about the Masamune. Though it wouldn't surprise me. Would likely have to do with the fact it's a Key/PlotImportant Item, same way you can't keep it for NewGame+.
-
That makes sense. It really just surprised me because I've never noticed it before, even though I almost always use Frog during that part of the game.
-
Me either... But him is anyway usefull at that area, It not so fast at Crono, but..
Anyway, If there not so limit group... game maybe too easy(?)
-
I know there were complaints of the game being too easy but I disagree. I have to grind for hours to get to level 99!!
-
Speaking of grinding, I was doing that recently in the new mobile version. (Graphical problems notwithstanding, it's a big improvement over the previous offering. It's still not good by any means, but at least it's tolerableon mobile. Using it as the basis for the Steam release, however, is unforgivable.)
Anyway, while grinding I noticed something odd: while every other character hits level 99 at 1,743,570 EXP, Magus requires 1,744,830 EXP. Was that difference present in other releases?
-
Hmmmmm, I'm not sure. That is very interesting though!
-
I can confirm that Magus needs more XP to 99 in the SNES version.
The starting stats contain the character's original level, their total XP, and the XP they need to level up. There's also a table of how much every character needs to level after their first level up.
Magus starts with 97,780 XP, just enough to reach level 37. His XP to level up is 9,200, but the chart that would be used by everyone else is 7,940.
The chart indicates that a character would need 9,200 to go from 40 to 41. Maybe he was originally going to start there?
