There's another ending variation in Chrono Trigger that I haven't seen anyone explain why it happens.
During the Crono Alive - Epoch Safe ending. At the teleports scene, after all the characters leave but before Crono's mom and cat appear, two different conversations can happen:
1) "Lucca: Do you remember that talk we had?
Marle: You mean about whether our lives flash before we die?
Lucca: I get the feeling that 'entity' is finally at rest
Marle: Yes, I feel that too."
2 "Lucca: I though lavos made the gates... But I guess I was wrong.
Marle: What do you mean?
Lucca: I think a greater force wanted us to experience these events."
The same variation happens in the ending with Crono Alive - Epoch Destroyed, and Crono Dead - Epoch Safe. It does not happen in the Crono Dead - Epoch Destroyed ending.
So far I haven't found what triggers it. Does anyone here know what causes it?

Option 1 is triggered by 0x7F006A bit 10, which is set when you return from the red gate as Lucca (no matter the result), so essentially it's determined by doing Fiona's forest sidequest, and having the conversation there.
