Title: Breaking Down the Doors of Destiny, Vol. 1: Outreach to Mitsuda
Post by: FaustWolf on February 17, 2011, 03:16:27 am
Yo, everyone! While you're still taking in the massive collection of fanwork assembled in the latest Mega Updates, drop Magus22 and justinstcharles some feedback in this news thread -- they're gathering questions from the community to ask Yasunori Mitsuda next time they try contacting him. If anyone can do this, they can, since they've had contact with Mitsuda's assistants (in Magus22's case) and with THE MAN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRMKAcMb_R8#t=0m36s) himself (in justinstcharles' case).

Hey, with an iron will and a little Tweet, anything can happen these days!

There's got to be some crossover in the Priority Questions for Masato Kato thread (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,883.0.html), right? Maybe ask if there's any plans of teaming up with Kato again? World Destruction/Sands of Destruction was their last game together, right?

Thanks Faust!

There's got to be some crossover in the Priority Questions for Masato Kato thread (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,883.0.html), right?

I had gone through every page of that thread V - not anything for Mitsuda sadly :|

Perhaps we should also decide on what type of questions to ask, such as...

[Generic] What was the first instrument you ever played and do you still enjoy it today?

-OR-

[GAME] Would you still be interested in scoring the music for a new Chrono game or re-release?

...or we could possibly do a mix of the two, so on and so forth.

I hate to be a pessimist but I don't think we'll get much useful information about future activity or plans for new Chrono games. Anyone who works under contract is typically bound to NOT reveal those kind of secrets.

I'd suggest concentrating on questions that would clear up issues of debate in canon or maybe where ideas came from, that kind of thing. Or questions that have the maximum value for the Compendium specifically.

Stuff like "What was your first instrument" would be kind of cool to get a reply, but wouldn't be very useful to the Compendium.

Just some thoughts.

What could we ask about the Chrono Cross Arrange album?

Mr. Mitsuda - How nervous were you having Nobuo Uematsu watch your every move while you composed the music for Chrono Trigger? Did this effect your process negatively or positively, if any?

For those of you who dont know, Nobuo Uematsu is a composer which is best known for scoring the majority of titles in the Final Fantasy series. He was instructed to keep close watch on Mr. Mitsuda.

I don't expect Mitsuda to have answers relating to a new Chrono game. We can save that for Kato (if and when the time comes). But I understand where you're coming from Bekkler.

Justin's question, for example, is superb. I think Mitsuda would have fun looking back on those days. Simple questions for Mitsuda are perfectly alright too, nothing too complicated or complex where he may have to spend an extended period of time thinking about it.

Yeah, but wasn't he sick or something which was why Mitsuda ended up doing most of the music (and yet somehow wasn't a part of the "Dream Team")?

Maybe ask who would be on his own personal Dream Team?

Post by: justinstcharlesmusic on February 18, 2011, 03:27:32 pm
He wasn't sick. Mr. Mitsuda was given an opportunity to score the game after he demanded it of Squaresoft. He was placed under careful watch because they were uncertain how he would perform. He later cried with tears of success because he proved his worth.

As for the dreamteam thing, perhaps that could be your own potential question.

I would ask, what are his favorite artists from jazz and world musics?

yea, not very relevant to the compendium, but I've got nothing lol. maybe ask him his philosophy on battle and boss battle themes perhaps...since he's always been so radically different from other JRPG composers in that regard.

Yeah, it was the other way around. Mitsuda got sick after composing most of the game (stomach ulcer), so Uematsu had to come in and do a handful of tracks.

1up did an interview with him back in 2008.

http://www.1up.com/features/radical-dreamer?pager.offset=3 (http://www.1up.com/features/radical-dreamer?pager.offset=3)

This is the last page (out of 4) that talks about him and Kato. Overall, some good questions are asked, but very brief responses given (obviously).

Did some thinking and some surfin...

Feel free to add and/or modify to these! Feedback, critique, and add-ons are welcomed!

General questions

How did you get started in the music business? What are your roots?

How has your music evolved since you first began playing/producing music?

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

Who are your musical influences? Who were you musically inspired by?

What are your future music career goals in the next 5 years?

How did you decide on your name (Procyon Studio)?

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Where would you love to perform and why?

Is there anyone you would like to write a song with or collaborate with in the future?

What advice would you give to young musicians today?

Fun questions

Do you have a girlfriend? (laughs)

Do you have a crush on any celebrities? (laughs)

Pathway questions to Kato

Thank you so much for your time Mr. Mitsuda! Our fan site has also tried hard to get in contact with your good friend, Masato Kato, over the many years. Have you conversed with him recently?

How is Masato Kato doing these days? Do you believe Mr. Kato would take part in a short interview?

Mr. Mitsuda, our Chrono Compendium has also desired to interview your friend Masato Kato. Would he be willing to answer some brief questions too?

I'd be tempted to argue against the Fun Questions on grounds that might put him off if he prefers not to get into that sort of thing; that isn't to say I'm not morbidly curious about those questions though...

I really like the general questions. We might rephrase the first one to specify that we're looking for his pre-Chrono Trigger experiences, since he's already described that experience at some length in previous interviews.

A question or two about Chrono Cross Arrange and Xenogears Arrange seem necessary, but I'm not sure what to ask -- hopefully the resident musicians and super Mitsuda buffs will have something in mind for that.

well for me, since he did real instrumentalists for MYTH, whether or not the cross arrange will be sampled or real people.
Title: Re: Breaking Down the Doors of Destiny, Vol. 1: Outreach to Mitsuda

I think we should keep focused on coming up with innovative/creative questions that will touch on his feelings and most inner thoughts/memories, deeply. I believe, the more generic the question - the less likely this interview will even come to pass. I'm sure if we all put our minds to it and try really hard, we will come up with some great questions. If we were to ask a total of 10 question, I think the first 6-7 questions should be this fashion, leaving the last few as lighter questions perhaps a bit more fun or quirky...if that makes sense.

Just think - what's the common link...why are we all here? CT of course. Having said that, try thinking of questions that are relevant exclusively to that time period, and even before then. Mr. Mitsuda has experienced a lot of success since those days...most of the time folks in that position tend to forget where they came from, at least in some aspects if not completely. We are presenting ourselves as being from ChronoPendium, the ultimate CT page. Therefore let's give him a dose of nostalgia in a very unique and attentive way.

Post by: FaustWolf on February 24, 2011, 06:59:59 pm
Yeah, better to come up with excellent questions than to rush the process; hopefully Mitsuda's Twitter account isn't going anywhere in the meantime. Maybe if each of us who are interested in this can come up with one truly thought-provoking question apiece, we'll have enough to go with.

We might even collaborate with the Xeno fan community on this, seeing as Xenogears Arrange is coming out soon and Mitsuda did some really amazing things with the Xenogears and Xenosaga: Episode I soundtracks.
Title: Re: Breaking Down the Doors of Destiny, Vol. 1: Outreach to Mitsuda
Post by: Magus22 on February 25, 2011, 02:13:07 am
My fear is that the complexity of the question(s) may turn him off... that and I would not know if Mitsuda would want to delve over 15 years into the past about topics that may have been answered in previous interviews of that era (and most recently a section in the CTU scans). I agree we should definitely put some CT-era-related questions in, but do you think he would rather appreciate his fans asking about his current works/projects a little more than sifting through the past?

I was a mere child when Chrono Trigger came out, but I will definitely try to come up with a nostalgic quesiton for Mitsuda using the information we have collected over the years! I'll never give up!

Hey guys. I was informed today that a friend of mine was killed. Her name is Charlene. She was driving with her friend and they seen a car accident, they both got out to help and both got hit and run by another car. They both perished. She's left behind 4 children and a husband.

I made a song for her and her family & friends, it's inspired by 'Too Far Away Times' - it's my own variant of it. I thought I'd share it here with you guys and remind you, time is short...so don't treat it like it is eternal.

Really sorry to hear about that justin. Having a friend wiped away suddenly is an experience we could all do without. At least you're able to pour your feelings into your art, and honor her memory while processing what's happened.

The instrumental would sound great in a videogame, hmm...

I wonder if Mitsuda's ever done something similar? Created a song with a particular person or experience in mind, I mean?

That sounds like a great question my friend. A great mind at work here. That should def be on the list for a CT related question.

Oh man... Justin this is terrible news. I feel especially sorry for your friends family as well. It's amazing how totally awesome your talent is that you can dedicate such an outstanding song in memorial. I wish the circumstances were different...

This has inspired me, kind of like what Faust said.

And you are right about time not being eternal.

EDIT:

How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
(Rephrased) = During the recording or a rehearsal of CT / CC, was there a song that someone (or musical section) completely botched?

What are your fondest musical memories?
(Rephrased) = Was is the most memorable musical moment you recall when working on CT / CC ?

Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
(Rephrased) = Was there any time you felt like a song did not belong in a particular place (either in CT / CC or another game he did music for) ?

I apologize for my absence. Mid-terms are approaching already!

Just wanted to touch base with everyone... does anyone have anymore more potential questions for Mr. Mitsuda?

If not, let us compile what we have gathered so far and create a rough draft for a translator. I can hopefully contribute to this next week when I have mid-semester break.

Yeah, midterm coming up here too. It's that time of the season again! :o

I see that the Xenogears arrange album (Myth, I think it's called?) was just released, maybe to coincide with Xenogears' appearance on PSN. Not to particularly rave reviews, ouch.

For your reference utunnels, this is the original "Small of Two Pieces" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0iFMuEHoag) vs. the one on Myth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-Fr8gP_k8U). Mitsuda's had enough contact with Joanne Hogg that I wouldn't be surprised if he had her sing for the new one, but I still have to wonder whether Mitsuda did a re-instrumentation but used the same vocal track as the original. They sound fairly similar.

Oh, yeah! Since these arrangements seem to contain only a selection of tracks from the original game, has Mitsuda ever divulged which tracks would be selected for Chrono Cross Arrange?

I'm back! I finally have some free time in the upcoming days, so let's get started.

I have written a rough draft for Yasunori Mitsuda (untranslated) that I will be posting in the upcoming days. I have also extracted/organized the questions everyone's contributed thus far into a single-quoted post.

Now, due to the unforeseen disaster in Japan and the fact that Mitsuda is performing at a concert in the upcoming weeks, we should try to set a target-time date to send our mail interview to Mitsuda.

If anyone has more questions they want to contribute (in light of any recent or upcoming events), please feel free to post away! I'll have an update tomorrow afternoon if all goes according to plan.

If I may suggest a few questions:

Are there any games you didn't work on that you wish you had?

If you could get a job working on any game with any developer, what would be your dream project?

Have you been able to play many games lately? If so, what have been some of your favorites?

After bQLSI Star Laser, do you see Procyon doing any more game development in the future?

In many of your older works, you composed the entirety of the soundtrack on your own; in most of your more recent games, you have collaborated with other composers. Is there a particular reason for this? Do you see yourself composing any other complete soundtracks in the future?

Have you ever considered branching out into writing music for movies or anime (like Koichi Sugiyama and Hitoshi Sakimoto)?

Also, everything in red are my responses that relate to a post or question. Feel free to critique and/or add feedback to anything you read!

We have a good list so far. Thanks to everyone who contributed so far!! Special thanks to FaustWolf and Justin St Charles for their continued support!

This post is for the short message we will add to get confirmation from Mitsuda. It may also be used as the direct letter containing the questions we select. Please add anything to this. As I said before, it is very rough.

Edit, critique, and keep the feedback coming.

Have your own version of a message? Post it here as well!

Quote
Possible intro (should it be any longer or should it get right to the point?)

Dear Mr. Mitsuda,

We are a community of fans from the Chrono Compendium, a fan site dedicated to the works of Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers (take this out?), and Chrono Cross. We have never been able to interview any individual who has had a hand in the development/production of the Chrono games. Would you be willing/interested to take part in our short interview about yourself and your works?

(Other fundamentals anyone would like to add in?)

[The next section would be to either wait for a reply back or attach our selected questions]

Example of format (perhaps we should leave extra room underneath each question as well...)

1. blah blah Blah blah blah...

2. blah the blah and blah blah the entity

3. Kato is teh entitities!! LOLz!!!

so on and so forth...

Concluding statement (multiple paths that determine the fate of our world!)

Thank you so much for your time Mr. Mitsuda! Our fan site has also tried hard to get in contact with your good friend, Masato Kato, over the many years. Have you conversed with him recently?

-OR-

How is Masato Kato doing these days? Do you believe Mr. Kato would take part in a short interview?

-OR-

Mr. Mitsuda, our Chrono Compendium has also desired to interview your friend Masato Kato. Would he be willing to answer some brief questions too?

Sincerely,

The Chrono Compendium

I can't think of any reason not to mention Radical Dreamers. I mean, it's a game. He worked on it.

Personally I'd wait for a response before sending in all the questions. It's a lot as is. Also, of the three closing statements I would definitely go with the first one; the other two might come off as a bit pushy.

"Gale" was a carryover from the Radical Dreamers soundtrack, right? I wonder if there's anything the fan community could ask about the relationship between the two soundtracks? I've always wondered why certain tracks from Radical Dreamers were kept and others tossed.

for the most part, he included whatever Kato wanted him to. the inclusion of CT and RD themes in the two overworlds were due to a suggestion to Mitsuda by Kato. I'm willing to bet the same with Star Stealing Girl, since Kato probably felt it a good theme for his character, Kid. There's a few ambient tracks that don't really have a place in CC, and the organ piece can really only be included in Fort Dragonia, or Terra Tower perhaps. Viper Manor stays for obvious reasons (because it's in both games in case someone can't figure out lol). No idea about the Lynx themes' exclusion, probably felt it didn't fit the aesthetics of CC as well. Same goes for that ending theme, he was specifically asked to do a vocal tune for the ending. In a way the epilogue theme was in CC because one of it's melodies features in the El Nido triangle undersea bit.

I'm guessing it has to do with Square Enix's Game Archives, i.e. PSN re-releases. See here: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/04/04/chrono-cross-still-sailing-to-game-archives-in-japan/

Hey all, how goes it?

I just want to let you all know that we are going to contact Mitsuda very soon. So, I am putting up a final call for any potential questions anyone may have. Fire away!

(and CC Arrange questions from chi_z's link? go for it!)

Around a couple days or so, when everyone has a chance to wrap up any final questions still floating around in their heads, we should pick the most stimulating questions for Mitsuda and go from there.

This is it! Follow the link below to the questions we already have compiled.

Looks great! I do have a question that might be valid enough to ask. To Mitsuda: "Do you have a favorite video game character?"

Funny you should ask! I was just about to update everyone.

Everything has been translated and we will be contacting Mitsuda very soon!

More on this within the coming days. If he responds, myself or someone else will update you all and I will get on it with the translation effort. Until then, I ask all of you to dream the most beautiful dreams in Enhasa.

Wish us luck!

I left the contact portion of the project to Justin. I believe it was his Procyon Studio e-mail, but we were also considering Twitter and Facebook.

Since the gears are in motion, I wanted to share a piece Mitsuda composed from one of my favorite RPGs on the PS2, Legaia 2 Duel Saga.

The song is called "Advancing to Far Away Places" and I thought it fits nicely in this situation. It is the world map theme. I especially love the music from time index 0:41

Enjoy, and let's hope for the best!

While we're on the topic of underappreciated Mitsuda songs, here is a gem I just recently discovered, entirely by accident. He wrote it for a CD of childrens' songs, but I can totally imagine it being an ending theme to some lost RPG epic that never was:
