Title: Revenge of the Sith

OK, I'm the Star Wars whore of this website.  So I decree that there shall be discussion.  And it shall be good.  Mostly.

I'm about to depart to quest for tickets. I love seeing stuff opening night, but it gets complicated with Star Wars. So I'll probably see it tomorrow or Saturday.

I'll probably go see it on Sunday or Monday. I want to see it with my little sisters, and that's the first they can. It should be good, though. According to RottenTomatoes, 83% of critics like it, which is VERY good. For comparison, the Lord of the Rings movies had about 92% liking them, and the last two prequels had low 60s. So things are defenitely looking up for Star Wars. And, considering I actually did like the prequels quite a bit, that should make this one all the better.

Anyway, though, though this is the last movie, Star Wars is showing no signs of dying any time soon (unlike Star Trek, to which I stopped paying attention years ago, and which now seems to have effectively perished.) Once this movie is over and done with, I'll be anticipating the TV show. And in the meantime there's always the fan movies. Anybody seen IMPS yet?

I'd discuss Sith more... but seeing as I've yet to watch it, it would be difficult.

I ordered my tickets online for the Seattle Cinerama, which boasts the biggest and best screen in town. (Short of that snazzy IMAX stuff...) I've still got the ticket stubs from the other two prequels in my wallet, both of which I saw on opening weekend in the best theater around. To be honest I don't care for the Star Wars prequels all that much, and I'm not expecting too much from the final installment. But, breaking with my usual stance of elitism and snobbery, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside to have had a front seat on the whirlwind of popular culture. I'll keep this ticket, too.

Let's talk about the soundtrack for a moment. I found the PM score to be lacking, but eventually parts of it grew on me. The AotC score was even harder to swallow, but again time helped me acquire the taste, and a few of the pieces started sounding decent. This time, though...ugh! John Williams has definitely lost his vision for this franchise. It's going to take a lot of time for me to have anything kind to say about the RotS score.

Williams has a distinct style. He favors discontinuous music that reflects the action on the screen rather than maintaining an internal continuity as other big name composers like James Horner prefer to do. You might say Williams accents a mood, while the Horner types tell a story. This style leaves him prone to thematic irrelevance, and I found that the RotS soundtrack lacks any meaningful thematic cues.

(Thematic cues are the underlying pieces of music, around which a full piece of music can be written, that recur in a movie to achieve a unification of substance onscreen; the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, for instance, has a famous and now widely-recognized principal epic cue. Braveheart consisted of almost nothing but its central cue. (It is one of Horner's worst failings, I might add.))

In RotS, there are only a small handful of significant new cues, each uninspired and technically primitive--albeit embellished with Williams' usual rich technique. Even many of the old cues, most notably the "New Hope" cues and the Imperial March sequence, were in my opinion misrepresented and poorly applied. Of course, the Williams' brilliance is that his music can sound terrible on its own and yet succeed beyond any expectations when taken in the context of the film itself. So, because I haven't seen the film yet, I can't make a final judgment. (I also note that there will be bits and pieces of music in the film that are not included on the soundtrack release.)

Nevertheless, in absolute terms I sure hope that Revenge of the Sith is better constructed than its un-independent musical score.

And may the Force be with you...

I actually think TPM had one of the best musical scores, but I haven't seen ROTS.  I'll probably see it either this afternoon or Saturday.  The AOTC score was rather bland, IMO, except for Anakin and Padme's love theme.  I find myself compulsively humming that sometimes.

EDIT: I saw the movie.

It...is...God.

Then I came back home and got bitched out by my bitchy, controlling mother for not telling her where I was.  I told her to, and I quote "piss the fuck off."

It was good, but I'm sad and disturbed about the affairs that transpired. Not of the criticism kind, but really. Those events are painful to reflect on.

Yeah, didn't dig on the last two at all...

RotS seems like it could be cool if they do it right though...Seeing him turn to the Dark Side is wicked awesome, yes, so that's good...

But now, who's going to do 7-9? :?

Star Wars Compendium?

Officially, nobody.  But some of the members of http://www.theforce.net are actually working on a fan-made sequel trilogy.  TF.N is the largest Star Wars website on the web and has the fifth largest forum on the entire Internet, with several hundred thousand registered users.  They're basically as close to a "Star Wars Compendium" as anyone's going to get.  Even the official site doesn't match its sheer volume of information.

Though many people actually consider Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy to be 7-9.  I don't blame them.

Well, I saw the movie tonight. I won’t spoil it, since many people probably haven’t seen it yet, but I will say that it is easily the best of the three films. However, I don’t think it stands out as all that great when measured against film in general. That’s obviously not going to be a surprise to anyone, but I was at least a wee bit let down by the fact that Lucas didn’t pull an ace out of his sleeve at the last minute. The pacing of the movie was off, and the acting and dialogue, as usual, were questionable. People were cringing and laughing at many of Padme’s lines. (“Hold me! Hold me like you did at the lake on Naboo!”) It was awesome to finally see Palpatine have some action, but the character was written so evilly that he looked a bit silly at times, which hurts the suspension of disbelief.

John Williams’ score, for which I had little good to say when I listened to the soundtrack itself, really shined in the movie. There were no standout themes, but as an ambient mood-setting device—which is Williams’ core strength—it was first rate material. Also keep an ear open for themes from all of the other five films! McGregor and Christensen gave the best performances amidst a sea of lackluster ones. Er…mostly McGregor. =)

Did anyone else who saw it feel that it was somewhat disconnected from the previous two? I haven't seen the Clone Wars cartoons, but it felt like it was it's own movie, and that the end drug out because Lucas had certain things he needed to accomplish, so he had to cram them all in at the end.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"

Most unintentionally hilarious scene ever.

Yeah. I would have preferred a big...AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Or massive groan, but No sounded EXACTLY like Rick Moranis on Spaceballs. I also liked Pappy's little Sith attitudes, but yes, sometimes it was a little over the top.

And the dialogue could have had some help. That hold me, as you said, was totally out of the blue.

So, I suppose in summation, the critics will say:

Episode I: Kiddie flick
Episode II: Sappy love story
Episode III: Cool nightmare

I loved Ian McDiarmid's performance -- even the over-the-top segments were good.  Let's face it; if you just got to finalize a plan that you'd dedicated your entire life to, you'd be going a little over-the-top too.

I was really hoping there was gong to be more spacefighting. That was the biggest thing that drew me to the original three, I couldn't get enough of it.

SPOILERS

Whats with the cheesyness in the movie? All of the dramatic scenes didn't really make me feeel the moment. Except for right after Obi Wan owned Vader, I could feel Vader's anger when he screamed at Obi Wan right before he got well done. Unlike the final scene with him in the full outfit, a mute could have done that part better. That lightsaber fight is easily the best part in the movie. This movie gave me a much greater appreciation for Obi Wan. Before I saw him as some weak Jedi who was always under someones shadow. Now in my mind he is above everyone except for Yoda.

http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=I-AM-the-Senate

128 INT. CORUSCANT-CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE-EARLY EVENING

MACE arrives with THREE JEDI to arrest PALPATINE.

PALPATINE: Master Windu. I take it General Grievous has been destroyed then. I must say, you're here sooner than expected.

MACE WINDU: In the name of the Galactic Senate of the Republic, you are under arrest, Chancellor.

MACE WINDU and the other JEDI ignite their lightsabers.

PALPATINE: Are you threatening me, Master Jedi?

MACE: The Senate will decide your fate.

PALPATINE: (Darth Sidious's voice) I AM the Senate!!!!!!!!

MACE: Not yet!

PALPATINE stands, a lightsaber appears out of his cloak sleeve, and he spins toward the JEDI.

PALPATINE: It's treason, then.

A close shot of PALPATINE as the fight begins.
