They could have that name for two reasons. One they have a square table duh. Second Squaresoft nuff said.
-
Or... It could be a joke on the Knights of the Round Table. That's what I assumed when I saw the name.
-
Right... (http://www.shoemakervillage.org/knights.html)
-
That book was written in 1997... I SENSE THETF!
But yeah, it was a joke about the Round Table, the Masamune being like Excaluiber. However, Square could come from Squaresoft, as well.
-
Keeping in mind the Masamune's real name is the Grandleon it would really add to the whole Medieval European Knight thing. I always assumed Round Table -> Square Table.
-
I looked at some translations of the Japanese version (Ryogamasaki's prerelease/final comparsion translation work and Kwhazit's translations), and those versions have no reference to a "Square Table." Another connection to the real world invented by Ted Woolsey...
-
Woolsey OR a shameless plug by Square of America :P

I saw somewhere else that they wanted to keep the name of the sword exotic, so whats really important is that the sword seems outlandish.
It still is a broadsword, but Frog's no King Arthur.
-
No but it is implied he is a Lancealot, falling in love with Leene and stuff. Like the Frog Ending... That was strange. But the implications are pretty obvious.
