Title: CHRONO TRIGGER COLISEUM
Post by: ZeaLitY on October 26, 2005, 12:55:24 am
The latest Chrono Trigger modification and by far, the most original and inventive, the Chrono Trigger Coliseum has been released by JP and Cory. The Coliseum, a battle arena located in 2300 A.D., allows players and fans of the game to spend time battling three different ladders of monsters to gain experience and "battle points," which can be redeemed in the arena for good prizes. Three modes of difficulty are available -- easy, medium, and hard -- and each ladder can be tried with both a full paty or a single member. You read correctly; you can solo these ladders, choosing a single party member at will to fight -- even Magus! The action spans three rooms, each utilizing a pulse-pounding battle theme to set the mood. Each set of monsters consists of seven battles, each harder than the first. The hard difficulty is particularly difficult, though the battle point rewards are much higher. Additionally, to support the needs of earnest fighters in the coliseum, a shop and kitchen exist.

(http://chronofan.com/Black/Stories/29/colfeat4.png) (http://chronofan.com/Black/Stories/29/colfeat5.png)

The Chrono Trigger Coliseum is nearly flawlessly integrated with the main game, meaning you can play a normal game of Chrono Trigger without any noticeable changes aside from the Coliseum itself. You can visit any time after the Factory dungeon is cleared to pick up items and test your skills; a substantial prize awaits for those who can beat the hard difficulties with party and solo modes! The perfect place to test your might, the Coliseum offers a new challenge to old veterans and breathes new life into the renowned battle system of Chrono Trigger. It is also arguably the most complicated event hack of the game to date, serving as indisputable proof that the Temporal Flux editor indeed has unlocked countless opportunities for reshaping the game. Rounding out the experience of Trigger with a battle arena, it is one of the most unique RPG modifications to date, and will endure long hours of skill testing and might building.

Before you download the hack, we have good news: the Chrono Compendium is hosting a competition to see who can beat both party and solo modes on the hard difficulty first! The competition is called 'Heir to the Masamune'; if you're eager to play through the Coliseum, waste no time and try the Hard difficulty! If you think you can take it, enter in the contest and compete to become the 'Heir'! Only ZSNES and extreme determination are needed! You can find all the details at http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Heir_to_the_Masamune ! The winner will receive a special forum rank on the Compendium, and will be posted on the contest page henceforth! Additionally, after the Heir is chosen, other entrants who beat Hard on both Party and Solo modes will be judged by their time and level to be posted on two scoreboards. This means that even if you miss obtaining the title of 'Heir', you can still do a better performance by beating hard with lower levels than he or she did, or beating it with a faster time. Start your engines!

Before you download, PLEASE make a note to read the readme, as important information is contained within. Also, don't miss the contest! We will find the true hero! Now, sate your battling desires, and good luck!

Additionally, don't miss a new feature describing the history of the Coliseum and providing a special interview with its creator JP!

I'll see you at the Coliseum! Happy hunting!

Man, that sounds  pretty freakin sweet...I think I have a clean Chrono Trigger ROM too...Hmm...But wait...what if someone uses a Save State or some kind of gameshark cheat or something?

Post by: Dirtie on October 26, 2005, 06:05:03 am
I tried using one of my previous save states from the normal game, but it makes it all bugged up (ie. people aren't there, some dialog is messed up I think), and it's even the same with the normal in-game save. Which means I'll actually have to play through until I get past the lab just to get in there with it being non-buggy (and even then, I don't know if it'll work properly).

Oh, it'd be nice if you spelt it "colosseum" instead of the other way, but since both are accepted, I won't bitch about it :)

Awesome. I can't help thinking why the Gran Slam Tournament in Chrono Cross was sooo limited. They could have made it like this Coliseum or the one in FFVII instead of having only 3 battles.

Well, that's one plus. We can copy the coliseum anywhere.

Dirtie,

Did you talk to the NPC in proto DOME to reset everything?  I believe that this question is addressed in the readme.

For a technicall answer, if you use a save state then the memory location that I'm using for the Coliseum is not what I want it to be.  By talking to that NPC it resets it to the value that I use.

Is it just me or does that NPC seem really sad? I mean, he's there in an empty dome (for god knows how long) and he's got a dialogue box, but no dialogue! >_> I think it should be some kind of innanimate object instead of a guy...Or maybe a Nu!

It was weird when I first got to that dome and I got into that battle near the NPC...after the battle he turned into some numbers >_> but after I did the battle up above and just off screen, he turned back...

jsondag2, to lazy to log in at work

The thing with that NPC is because all of the strings are used up there, and it's a different string index then the directors ending (what I replaced for the Coliseum) we couldn't simply replace an existing string.   At first we were going to just put his code in an existing NPC but we thought people would just be confused if we said "to reactivate the Coliseum talk to the NPC that says

Someone is living in the abandoned dome by Death Peak"

If I could assure that noone was going to use Save States to skip most of the game than we wouldn't need the Coliseum Cause all of the code that usually runs when you talk to the NPC is also ran when you recruit Robo.

Sorry for getting technical, I do that with stuff like this...alot haha

Nice!

But, sady, I don't have a Chrono Trigger ROM(and would likely never will... I got the real game(PSX, but who CARES!?)).

Though, I will congrats who ever get to be the "Heir to the Masamune."! :P

whenever I load a saved game it freezes when I try to go to 2300ad. When I try to start a new game, after you name crono the game freezes.

Your ROM could be badly interleaved, I think. Or, you applied the wrong patch. Anyway, just get a new one and try it out with the headered patch.

Urgh, how can you stand that port? I have the real, SNES version for the win, baby!

Anyways yeah, it's pretty fun for the few minutes I've had to play it (I was evicted from the comp shortly after patching my freshly downloaded ROM)

Um, if you've got the PSX version then you do have a Chrono Trigger ROM...I'm pretty sure you can just copy it directly from the CD even...>_>

Fighting 2 pink nu spekkios is crazy.  I'm using Crono/Marle/Robo for Lifeline, but even that isn't saving me from their onslaught.

Ironically, I do fine until one of them uses Salt.  When only one uses it, it "desynchs" them, causing repeated Hallation/spell combos that I can't heal / revive fast enough to block.

Any suggestions, outside of repeating the fights until I win without either one using Salt?

Perhaps it was there for backup purposes? Some kind of failsafe? Or maybe it was left by accident?

Dunno. It's a .BIN file instead of a SMC, but plays perfectly on ZSNES.

Title: pink nu
Post by: Froboy on October 28, 2005, 01:55:41 am
Back on the combat subject, to beat one pink nu:

Take Crono+Marle, and either Frog or Robo.

Then have Crono cast Luminaire, and Marle + Frog/Robo cast Double Cure / Cure Touch immediately after Hallation (the all HP to 1 tech).

Assuming that your entire party can survive Luminaire (the strongest of his techs), this will make for a long, boring battle that's easy to win.  For some extra security, take Robo over Frog, and open the battle with Lifeline.

I have absolutely no idea on how to do it with just one person...will Ayla's Bronze Fist strike hurt Spekkio?

I'm fairly sure that the PSX version actually uses that ROM for gameplay. Thus the crappy load times.

Aw nuts...I stopped playing because my comp froze after fighting Nizbel II and my previous save was before getting the Dactyl...

Why don't I savestate more? WHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!??

I would, but I stupidly have my Shift set up as my L Trigger on my GBA Emu...so it can get annoying w/certain games like Pokemon & MegaMan Battle Network where the L Trigger is used to open some damn window...I mean, it just means that I'd open a savestate to an opened window of text or w/e...but it still annoys me I guess...>_> My own stupidity, that is...

Story time!

I thought that the coliseum wasn't going to be too hard, so I got the key in Sewer Access immediatly, and entered the arena with my level 10-12 party... To be frank, I was a bit intimidated by how there were enemies from the Giant's Claw in the easy mode fights. I beat the Lizardactyl, and went on to fight the final fight of Easy mode... Masamune-form Spekkio.

My jaw dropped as he did 1800+ damage to my whole party.

Yeah, I think the coliseum is a bit too hard, but I guess that's what makes it so great. I've only beaten Masamune form Spekkio once in as long as I've had CT, which is nearing 6 years now, and that was on my SNES version. I've never even seen the pink Nu formed Spekkio.

Long story short, I won't be winning this competition. But I know I'm enjoying just trying to complete Easy mode. Plus, the arena made me finally start playing the CT Rom I've had for 7 or 8 months now. Up till then, I'd only gotten as far as recruiting Lucca in 600 AD. Now, I'm just past Zenan Bridge, and have put at least half of my playtime of the last two days in the arena alone.

Wait, what? Is it Masa&Mune form Spekkio? I just thought it was Masa&Mune...You just need higher Mag Def & Robo's Heal Beam to beat the final forms of Spekkio (full party). That's what I always used.

Yes, it's the Masa&Mune form of Spekkio. He opened with an attack that dealt 1800+, remember? I don't remember the REAL Masa&Mune dealing that much... :D

I found a bug in the arena, but I'm not sure if my Email's working. Is the person who made the arena someone here that I can PM? I can just tell them that way instead...

I lost twice vs Spekkio Masa&Mune in solo fight...he always uses Chaos Zone and because of the helm handicap it hits me, then after a time he uses his instant killer (forgot the name, it looks like a hallation ball and is also the counter attack of the alien enemy which at the black omen). The other time I was lucky using Chrono+max magic+prismspec(my favo accessory)+max speed+haste helm to kill him before the instant kill attack. Medium was no problem with my (mostly) maxed out chars(btw can u dodge the iron orb with magus+3rd eye [** evade], or is it like aylas tail spin?)

Yeah there is 1 with the same problem I had!!!!!!!
One key is at the Gate in 65.000.000 BC where you fought Azala.
Another 1 is in the sewer(near the note telling you to keep quiet) in 2300 AD.
The last one is in 1000 AD(porre) at the "snail shop", this 1 is invisible, but u get it by search the plant on the left.

the Keys should open up the harder difficulties.

Though.....now I don't remember if I made it so that the "hard key" opened up hard or if having "3 keys" opened up hard.
