Title: How far did you get in Chrono Trigger?
Post by: Redline57 on December 19, 2018, 04:55:25 am
Just curious, I know some people here may be bigger fans of Trigger than Cross, some may like Radical Dreamers a lot. A friend of mine replayed Chrono Trigger maybe 8 times over a decade and just recently beat it for the first time. So how much have you played? How far did ya get? (if this has been done, please pull it)

I would be willing to bet most of us have played it to death! I've played through it from start to finish countless times.  I didn't get every ending until the DS remake...mostly because as a 5 year old kid I couldn't figure out how to get more then two endings. haha

Yeah, I've played the game to death. I've played it so much that I now struggle to get through subsequent playthroughs. I get sort of... bored... just to be honest.

I wish I could go back in time to the first time I played, though. I would spend so much time just walking around, and I would take the time to LOOK and EXPLORE every single screen. I would go into a house and literally walk up to every item and press A, would talk to every person several times to see if I could get new dialogue, and I would even stop and just let my eyes take it all in.

I remember the first time I got to the End of Time I spent probably a good 10 minutes just oogling at it. That's saying something, because there's not much at the End of Time. I should also add this was before I even bothered venturing into Spekkio's Room.

Same here!  It's pretty hard for me to get through these days.  I have the same problem with FFVI, and a couple other old favorites.  I'm getting there with Cross, too. Though I had only played Cross once when it came out.  It was a friends game that I borrowed, so I didn't really have the opportunity to play it again until college. I've played it about once per year ever since, up until last year.

I used to have one of those old boom boxes that you could record your own cassette tapes with.  I would sit at the end of time and talk to each character to trigger their themes, then I would record them on the tapes so that I could listen to them whenever I wanted. I'm pretty sure I've got a 30 min loop of Frogs song somewhere. haha

I've played it all the way through countless times. I try to do at least a couple of playthroughs a year; a quick one with New Game +, and a slower one with New Game.

I don't get bored with the game, but I know what you mean about recapturing the magic. That's why I like to watch people experience it for the first time, particularly real-life friends so I can see their faces light up in person. I love to hear their reactions to events and their speculations about where the story is going, and to see how they approach each situation. Through it all I stay quiet and let them make their own discoveries and mistakes.

Everyone so far has loved the game, and their enthusiasm lets me vicariously relive my first playthrough.

Spekkio's final form. You need to be at max level for that one.

When I play it, there's that part where you can't find Melchoir. I get lost there. Every time, like an alzheimer's patient, its like a mental block. Even now I don't remember what to do after that. So it'll be fun for me next time I play it :)

I have never done a lvl 99 playthrough. I always say I'm doing to NG+ a few times to get there, but then I end up wanting a challenge so I start over with a level 1 new game. :/

Come to think of it...I've never gotten to lvl 99 either... Weird!  I think the highest I've ever gotten was upper 70s, lower 80s.

Wow, I've never truly played the whole thing--I've never played all the games at the Fair! Time for another run. And I'll make a checklist for all the endings.

of course I've thoroughly played through CT.

grinding up to level ** is tedious, so I'd recommend using PAR codes (Pro Action Replay) if you want to fight Nu Spekkio. just be aware, if you get a massive amount of experience/level-ups through PAR, the game might lag for awhile, so you just have to wait it out.

Interestingly enough, I found the Developer Room quite by accident. I had no idea there were multiple endings (first playthrough I rescued Crono, recruited Magus, and destroyed the Epoch so that Crono's mom chased the cats into the Millennial Fair gate), and I was doing my first NG+.

I went to the Ocean Palace and remembered that I was supposed to lose... but decided to see what happens if I didn't. So I gave it my all and...

...discovered the Developer's Room.

Suffice to say, I was devastated by the one gag in which the guy says something along the lines of "want to see a screenshot of Chrono Trigger 2? ... Yeah, that'd be nice!" I was seriously heartbroken. My eleven or twelve year old mind was quite saddened by that joke, as I was wishing for a sequel already.

Had I played chrono trigger when it came out, that woulda hurt me too. because for years i would have thought, at the time with few people on the net, that they had started work on a chrono trigger 2. like when they announced Season 3 of the Chappelle's show and we got a fragment, its been 15 years and im still waiting haha.

I have fought Frog Spekkio though.

One of the new items in the DS version is an armor for Lucca that nullifies all elemental damage. Spekkio's Halation can drop her to 1 HP, but he can never finish the job due to her immunity to magic.

Seriously? Wow, I never knew this.

You have to get a Lumicite Shard by either killing or charming a Wonder Rock (https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Wonder_Rock.html) and take it to the smith in the 600 AD Lost Sanctum. The Wonder Rock is a rare spawn on the second screen of 600 AD Mt. Emerald and on the second screen of the "Singing Mountain" portion of the 12,000 BC Dimensional Vortex. (The linked page also lists it as being in 600 AD Millennia Wood, but I can't confirm as I've never seen it there.) It's pretty hard to kill if you're not yet at the level where Luminaire and Flare nuke everything, since the rock is fast, highly resistant to damage, and can run away. So if you're lucky enough to see one I definitely recommend equipping Ayla with the Charm Top and putting her and Marle in your party before you engage it. Even then I've had it escape on its first turn before I could Twin Charm it.

Sorta cheapens it doesn't it, this is why I prefer the original game

It's certainly an overpowered piece of equipment. The new content isn't as good as the original content, but I can't complain too much since it gives us new things to do in the Chrono world. Of course, those new things are only of interest if you've already done all the old things, so I always recommend that people play the original first to get the "true" experience, and then play the DS version for the bonus stuff.

I didn't know there was any, other than "i'd be down for it." just the reference in the developers room at the end with the robot asking if they wanted to see one.

After I beat Lavos traditionally for the first time, I invited my friend over that weekend and we tried to get to the Developer's Room. That's why getting there was particularly memorable for me; we spent all afternoon trying to beat Lavos with just Crono in the party.

We traded the controller around for his different phases and actually managed to beat him that night, it was really satisfying.
All the text in there was really memorable and tongue-in-cheek, it's one of my favorite easter eggs in the game.

I've been at Lavos for quite some time. I recently made a new save since I missed a bunch of loot, however. I'm at Lavos again, doing pre-final boss cleanup.

Edit: When I got to Lavos for the first time, I was a (rather stupid) little kiddywink.

tbh, I made this game my bitch within the first three months I got it. Must have beaten it close to 100 times (surprise, I had no life as a kid).

Okay, so I did require the assistance of the internet to get the slideshow ending and the ending where Magus says one of his most badass quotes. But other than that, I must have explored every corner in every era (as much as possible), tried every party combination, and made sure to walk both paths wherever a fork in the road occurred.

Mostly the loading times, I believe. An issue that was more about the way discs store and read data.

Unless there's someting else I'm missing on. Admitedly, the PSX version is the one I'm least familiar with.
Title: Re: How far did you get in Chrono Trigger?
Post by: Boo the Gentleman Caller on March 29, 2019, 03:15:34 pm
I owned the PSX version as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles.

I believe the only changes were the addition of the animated cutscenes and the music library.

The only negative was the loadtimes, especially when it comes to battles.
Title: Re: How far did you get in Chrono Trigger?
Post by: Redline57 on March 29, 2019, 03:34:50 pm
Load times? I'm surprised, this game was only like 4 Megs, FF7 was over 3 discs close to 800 Megs, and was 64 bit, Chrono Trigger couldnt load faster on a superior (technically) console?
Title: Re: How far did you get in Chrono Trigger?
Post by: trig on March 29, 2019, 04:57:12 pm
The port was poorly done. A bunch of disc reading was performed before and after each battle, so there's a 6-8 second pause where the characters and monsters just shoot the s***.

video example, http://youtu.be/ot6nEq75mr0 (http://youtu.be/ot6nEq75mr0)

This has been explained before. Discs and cartridges have different ways to store and read data. Due to the way the data can be stored on the disc, the amount of times it needs to spin for the disc reader to read any given string of data in its correct order means it can take more time.

Also, CT for PSX is like 290 MB's (assuming nothing much was added to its PSN version to increase its size), not 4.

It isn't just the anime cutscenes. The extras stuff like the bestiary, item artwork, tech library, etc. Were also in the PSX version.

Even if not, the game was bound to get bigger. You don't just port the files and expect the Playstationn to run them as-is. There were likely modified, or stuff added to them, so they could run in the PSX. I wouldn't be surprised if at least over half of those 290 MB's are the stuff necessary so it could run on the PSX. Then again, I'm not that an expert on porting from Console A to Console B, but it's certain the game was never going to be 4MB's on the PSX.

Is tehre like an operating system's worth of coding? My PC's emulator program is about 1Mb, Chrono Trigger is 4Mb on here, i've played the whole thing. Crimson Echoes was like 7Mb, all working. What are they doing in there? Is it 300Mb of anti-piracy coding or something? Square put in a video on why cease and desist letters are appropriate?
Title: Re: How far did you get in Chrono Trigger?
Post by: Mauron on March 30, 2019, 02:57:17 am
I checked my ripped copy of CT PSX, it's 522 MB. The bulk of it is movies. They also have larger versions of the music and sounds, presumably better quality. There's also a copy of the JP ROM that's used for looking up some data.

Chrono Trigger's data is less than 4 MB, but the chip its on is 4MB, so garbage data is included in that 4MB. Some is at the end, some is in the middle.

...Ok, why is MONSTER.DAT 23 MB? I think I'll poke around that one a little tomorrow.

I can't find the post, but I think Gemini once explained some of the inefficiencies of the PS version, like it pointlessly decompressing all the NPC graphics when the menu is opened.

I have played Trigger TO DEATH. Lol. I have multiple files where my entire party is level 99 and I’ve played NG+ so many times it’s insane. But still... I sometimes still find dialog I’d never seen before. Trigger is awesome. That being said I have played Cross quite a bit as well, although not as much as Trigger. Currently, I’m playing Crimson Echoes again. :)

I remember for sure I've beaten Chrono Trigger for SNES at least once and gotten one of the endings.

I've for sure beaten Chrono Cross at least once as well.

I've never done New Game+ for either.

Just yesterday afternoon I started up a new game for Chrono Trigger (SNES). I'm 00:28 minutes in and, guys, this game seriously steals my breath away. I had forgotten how much fun it was. I'm so excited everytime I look forward to playing it each day.

I had no idea that Chrono Trigger had multiple endings. I beat the game once and immediately began a second playthrough on NewGame+.

I got to the first battle with Lavos (at the Ocean Palace) and decided to see what happens when you're not beat by Lavos and found the Developers Room. I was so confused; this would have been late summer to early fall of 1996.

When the one character asks if you'd like to see 'Chrono Trigger 2' I was ecstatic -- until his follow up response: "Wouldn't that be nice?" Talk about your heartbreak.

One thing I never knew about Chrono Trigger, and this was before I had Internet, was that you can get Magus. I think I was baffled or astonished when I first looked up that you can get him.

I usually almost always play all the games at the Millennial Fair but I don't really do the Tent of Horrors until much later when you can go back.

Played for about an hour today and I just rescued Queen Leene.

Good thing you were able to resolve that paradox! Did you know you have two options during the prison escape? You can choose to break out, or wait the three days until Crono's execution. If you haven't done both, I recommend at least checking out to see what happens if you wait.

Same here! I generally play as good characters / paragons / whatever and didn't want revenge on Magus, only to be surprised when he joined me for it. I also remember after the dialogue ended (but before he joins) being confused because there were no activations left on the screen. I kept trying to talk to Magus thinking there was more to the scene before I gave up and tried leaving the map, only to have him stop me.

I love how they go into detail about how Marle just disappears if her ancestor Queen Leene is just kidnapped lol.

Ok I'll keep that in mind during the jail situation I think I usually break out or escape lol but I'll try waiting this time just to see what happens! That's usually my favorite scene in the game I love when RPGs feature the main character getting arrested and locked up in jail I think it's so interesting. It definitely happens in a lot of RPGs but I think and feel Chrono Trigger is the most famous scene of all, and it includes the trial and everything too.

I think I usually break out so I can get the items and explore, and fight for experience points though. Do you happen to know if you'll miss out on items if you choose to wait? My favorite is when you check on the inmate and he turns to dust or a skeleton and just basically disappears lol.

Well one of the only things I remember was how iconic the fight was between Frog and Magus. It's the only scene I remember from the game really. I actually always play as a good guy too and always making the moral choice or decision lol. I thought the right thing to do was to just finish the fight with Frog though. That's what I did when I was younger. I never cared for Magus ever. I was stuck at that scene forever because it was such a hard fight.

You won't miss anything unless you move the story forward after the scene. Otherwise you can backtrack and get all the stuff.
