Title: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on February 28, 2018, 05:40:30 pm
This is the current partial list of sound effects in battle.

Code: [Select]
00 - Confirm / Menu Cursor
01 - Error
02 - Miss

04 - Tonic 1
05 - X-Strike?
06 - Tonic 2
07 - Ether
08 - Unsheathe

4D - Impact (Spincut)
4F - Slash Hit

53 - Wind Effect (Slash, Spincut)

6A - Explosion

6E - ??? (Lightning)

71 - Magic Casting (Lightning)

7B - Lightning2 Hit
7C - Magic Casting (Lightning2)

88 - Tech learned
89 - Revive tune (Life)/Level up

A9 - (matches up with Battle Party Message index $0C, not used?)

C0 - Charm failed

D2 - "Whoosh" Spincut

There's a collection of SPCs (http://chronofan.com/Black/Other/ctbattlefx.rar) that can be used to identify these sounds. I've also attached a Flux file, that if imported into Temporal Flux (with Hi-Tech installed), will replace Cylcone with a tech that just plays one sound.

0xFF is probably a special code, and 0xFA-0xFE may or may not be used.

I'll get to work on this.

Outdated, see top of page 5 for current version:
https://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php?topic=12669.msg226796#msg226796

wiki entry: https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Text_List_of_Sound_Effects.html#Battle_sound_effects

This old version is provided for historical interest, to show how the document has developed over time. It contains a number of omissions and errors.

~~~~
All sounds are labelled with hexadecimal, which uses numbers 0-9 and letters A-F to represent 16 values. With two digits, this allows up to 256 different values, although not all are used.
I've listed the sounds in hexadecimal order. I describe the contexts in which they're used, and sometimes the sound itself. I use cf to compare similar sounds, and use from/to to reference frequent combinations. To show that a sound is played in repetition, I use x(number) eg x2 for twice. I use a question mark ? to denote where I'm uncertain of my results, but this is only in a few places.
I've also included Tech Recipes: combinations of sounds used for various techs employed by both the party and monsters. Aside from novelty value, this should make it easier to look up sounds; just think of a tech in which it's used and check for it. The techs are organized by single/double/triple and enemy techs, as well as by character and in-game order. I use commas for sounds that are played in sequence, and a slash / for sounds which overlap each other.
This is by no means complete or comprehensive. I was able to identify 184/200 sounds, or 92%. I couldn't get F3 to play, and I couldn't find the sound used in the Final Kick triple tech (perhaps they're one and the same). I went solely by the list of 200 SPCs; if there are other sounds, I didn't examine them (I think my best find was AC -- it's used when insectoid robot enemies fly towards you to attack, that was really obscure). Of the 16 unknown sounds, I think at least some, if not most, are unused in the vanilla game. 66 is subtle, and I may have overlooked it. I list the unknown sounds in the beginning, along with a few comments on them, and leave blank spaces in the main list (also, the fact that there's 16 missing sounds fits the hexadecimal theme).
The devs were clever in their use of sound fx. Many sounds are re-used in different contexts, while fitting the action each time. For example, C6 is used for the second phase of Evil Star (Lavos Core), as well as Water Rising (Giga Gaia) and Rock Teleport (Azala). I'm sure everyone has noticed that 6D is used for Aura Whirl and Halation, but it's also used by Guardian & bits. In addition, it's usually cut short -- by including the high-pitch tone at the end of Halation, it achieves the uncanny effect of distorting a familiar sound. By cutting sounds short or repeating them rapidly, they accomplish more with their given resources.
Credit goes to xcalibur. Any mistakes/omissions are my fault.
finally, another discovery! I've identified CA with Burst Ball, an obscure enemy tech. It's used by TerraMutant (late in the attack queue), and by Dalton Plus (according to the encyclopedia, I haven't confirmed this). There seems to be some sort of filter applied to the sound when used in-game, but I'm confident that it's unique and that CA is the best fit. However, it would be helpful to have confirmation that CA is used.
TerraMutant definitely uses sound CA in tech EE (which could be described as Burst Ball). Dalton Plus uses tech 88, which also uses sound CA.
Dalton Plus has 5 attacks in his cycle, two slashes, two ball attacks (the same one used by the Mage enemy, physical damage), and one ball attack (different, magical damage).
appreciated! just double-checked and confirmed CA for Dalton Plus. in both cases, Burst Ball comes at the end of their attack cycle, which means many people end up not seeing it because they've won the battle by then.
I mostly use the tech names given by the encyclopedia. Sometimes I add my own descriptions, eg orange pellets for Energy Ball.
Since I first posted, I've added lots of small changes, additions, and polish. Whenever I work on something, I get focused on improving and fleshing it out as much as possible (while trying not to get bogged down by perfectionism). I've been working on this from the front-end without digging into the code, it felt like solving a puzzle.
I've got all the triple techs (except for that sound used in Final Kick). I left out some single and double techs; my thinking was to cover most of them without making the recipe list too long. Should I add the rest anyway?
Let me know if there are any more sounds to be identified among the (now 15) unknowns.
I'll stick a simplified version of the list in Hi-Tech's interface, but include a full version as a text file, and stick a copy in the encyclopedia too.
Final Kick's sound effects: D2, 65 (x3), EB, ED. All of them use the three-byte play sound command. The third playing of 65 has a different unknown value than the first two.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on March 29, 2018, 06:32:31 pm
Once again, thanks. As I said, I find it way easier to use the tech recipes as a reference rather than scanning the list each time. So I agree with including a full version alongside the abbreviated list.
Are you absolutely sure it uses ED?? That's the unknown sound with a 'pin drop' effect. You're sure it's not F3 (which won't play in Game Music Box)? The problem is that there's a 'screaming' sound which is very prominently heard during Final Kick. I haven't been able to identify this, and it's nothing like the 'pin drop' of ED. Thus my educated guess that the one sound I can't find must be associated with the one sound file I can't play.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on March 29, 2018, 06:43:13 pm
Yes, definitely. I opened it in Hi-Tech, and I can see it uses ED with an unknown value of 2B that alters it somehow. It's also possible there's a second error in that sound collection, with sound ED. I'll double check things later.
It's rather surprising that they could transform a 'pin drop' into something between a minigun and a jet engine. but maybe that's what they did -- I wouldn't put it past the dream team.
Whenever I add an entry on here, I use multiple confirmations (comparing the sounds back and forth several times, looking up a youtube LP to make sure my setup is playing it correctly, etc). I'd like to be certain before taking a leap of faith and adding something I can't personally confirm without mucking around in temporal flux/hi-tech (which I haven't had to do yet).
I modified Cyclone to play just sound ED, and it sounds nothing like the the SPC file (https://youtu.be/TqKvuxtnpgM) I played.
I also recorded sound f9 (https://youtu.be/VS6kDyVgZMA). It seems like it's a machine attack related sound.
Post by: xcalibur on March 29, 2018, 09:23:07 pm
just listened to ED in-game, and I can confirm, that's the sound for Final Kick. however, it seems to be cut off short. this is confirmed by F9, which is definitely cut off on the video compared to the spc file. Based on the spc, F9 sounds like a fancier version of D0, which leads me to speculate that the instant KO spell originally used F9, but this was replaced by D0. And based on placement, perhaps Lavos Core originally had the instant KO tech, but this was removed (presumably because he's challenging enough already). Of course, this is all speculation on my part.
What about F3? As I said, it won't play in Game Music Box, so I wonder whether it's an empty slot or if it's an issue on my end. I'd also like to know if there's any more used sounds among the unknowns (which are now down to 14).
It seems that the tech ended before the sound finished playing. I put a longer pause in for the F3 recording (https://youtu.be/4CG4vRKc3pY). Some kind of wind/enemy attack sound? It's possible my playback has some looping in it.
I thought you had said F9 earlier. Whoops.
Post by: xcalibur on March 29, 2018, 09:48:21 pm
The F3 video sounds just like BB, which is used for Glacier double tech and Spin Strike triple tech. That's strange... maybe one tech uses BB and the other uses F3?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Spin Strike uses F3, not BB.
I thought they sounded a little different! I just updated my post. Now we're down to 13 sounds unaccounted for.
I did some important editing/reformatting. I think it's close to being a finished product, finally. I just need Mauron to verify that the rest of the unknown sounds are unused, whenever it's convenient. I also want to clear up the few uncertainties.
I don't think this is the case. I think the SPC file in that collection has some other sound in place of the actual sound.
I'll scan through some more of the unknowns later. It's a bit of a tiring scroll fest for each one.
well that's a bit confusing. if you're sure of this, I'll remove that bit of information.
and I understand, I don't want to make any demands. this can proceed whenever you're ready.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
The SPCs are created by playing the sound effect in game. My simplified test case to play that sound in game didn't match the file at all, so I can only assume there was a recording error or file mixup.
I want to get this list into Hi-Tech soon, so I'll get to the last few unknowns.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 08, 2018, 05:03:23 am
Okay, I edited.
once the unknowns are dealt with, I'd like to make a few more edits to finalize this. as I mentioned, there are a handful of uncertainties marked with a question mark ?, and I'd like you to check on those too. it won't be many, maybe ~5.
also: I formatted this to fit on the forum. I figured if each entry takes up only 1 line here, then it should be acceptable for Hi-Tech. ideally I'd like the entries put in full-length to properly describe the sounds. if they need to be shortened, I'd like to have input. and let me know if there are any other issues.
eta: thinking it over, maybe I could shorten the entries by removing all content in parentheses and reworking it from there. after all, the full version should be on here, the wiki, and a text file. how does that sound?
I went ahead with an abridged version, pending analysis of the unknowns. let me know what you think. next post
F9-FE are unused.
Unfortunately while checking that range, I realized my earlier checks didn't work right. I'll have to go over them again.
Thanks.
09 Unused
48 Rolypoly's attack when alone, unused Jinn Bottle attack 1, Unused Roly bomber attack attack 2, Unused Son of Sun attack 2.
5C Enemy tech 26 (currently listed as physical attack, weird sound), Super Command 19 (currently listed as glitchy. It should work, but will screw up if used in certain techs. It's unused.)
66 Unused
79 Unused
A7 Unused
BA Unused
C2 Zombor's Doom, Doom, Doom, Doom...
CE Enemy Tech 1c, similar to Dalton's burp, Enemy tech 61, similar to Magus's Dark Mist
DB Unused
F2 X-Strike
I can record some of these techs later.
Thanks. Mauron is more on the technical side than I am, but I'll accept that nonetheless.
Zombor was one of the few battles I didn't look into, of course he was holding out on me!  :?
I updated, but this creates more questions. I had thought 49 was used in X Strike, but apparently not, which means 49 is a new unknown to check. X Strike is kind of tricky because the sounds are layered on top of each other.
Are you sure 48 is used by those enemies? the SPC is a looped electronic sound. could it be another case of the SPC differing from the in-game sound?
can you check if CE (aka enemy techs 1c and 61) are used? if so, I'd like a lead on this (relevant enemy, dungeon, etc).
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 13, 2018, 05:03:42 am
I goofed the list on 48 in 3 of the 4. Whoops.
X-Strike plays 4D and F2 at about (exactly?) the same time.
49 is unused.
Enemy techs 1c (I wrote 19 by mistake earlier), 26, and 61 are all unused as far as I can tell. I'll record them in battle tomorrow.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 13, 2018, 07:27:24 am
just confirmed that 48 is used for Rolypoly's tech, listed as Spin Jump in the encyclopedia. should've known another gem was hiding in Heckran Cave. very obscure.
here are my remaining uncertainties:
0B: is this used anywhere besides Aura Whirl? it sounds just like a save point, so I thought it might be associated with the save point enemies in Magus' Castle.
A5: is this used when Guardian revives bits?
CF: sounds exactly like a robot opening/flexing, but I can't find an example of it in battle.
E3: is this used for an enemy running from battle (eg Golem Boss, Diva Flea)?
6A: is this rapidly repeated for Fire Breath and Omega Flare?
5F/60: which is used in Needlespin & Needle Disorder?
D7: I believe this is only used for Super Volt (Chrono/Robo) while 7B is used for lightning2 as well as Mother Brain and Mammon Machine attacks.
also, I believe 41 is used for Rocket Punch, Laser Spin, R-Series, and Robo crits; while B3 is used for advanced Robo techs (Robo Tackle, Bubble Snap, etc).
it turned out to be more than 5, but hopefully this is manageable, especially since I'm mostly certain of the last two. the idea is to iron out any and all uncertainties, so I can remove the question marks and finalize this. I'd like to get it right the first time so to speak.
Enemy tech demonstration (https://youtu.be/5VcgX-uuUYQ) 1c, 26, 61 in that order
0b Aura Whirl, Grand Dream
A5 is used as part of the Guardian's revive.
CF unused
E3 is used by Golem Boss's and Flea Plus's fleeing (fleaing?), probably others.
6A is used by Omega Flare and the Dragon Tank's flame breath. Both Tyrannos use 74. I'm not sure what else has a flame breath attack off the top of my head.
5F is used by all Needlespin variations
7B is used in *Lightning2. Super Volt (I think is what you meant by Shock) uses 51, 6e, 8a, and F1.
Mother Brain doesn't seem to use either. Her Mystic Ray (Proto 4's beam) uses A2 and A4. Laser Spin (also used by Debuggest) uses 80.
41 is used by Robo's Rocket Punch and Laser Spin, and one of the R Series punches. It's probably used by Robo's Critical (one PC definitely does), but that table is somewhat confusing. I'd have to do some debugging to figure it out.
B3 is used by Robo Tackle and Bubble Snap.
D7 is used by GaiaMagnatude / Fire (Giga Gaia), Laser Beams / Doors of Dooms Open (Lavos 2).
I think that covers everything.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 13, 2018, 07:01:45 pm
I meant to say Super Volt, just edited. And I should've realized 0B was in Grand Dream, it's already in the tech recipe!  :oops: pardon me.
A5: thought so. I think it's really cool how they used the charge-up sound for luminaire in that way.
6A: a number of enemies use the 'rapid fireballs' attack. this includes Megasaur, Red Eaglet, Son of Sun, Zombor, among others. then there's Mother Brain's Reprogramming/chaos, Lavos Spawn's Blizzard/chaos which are similar. I thought it was 6A, just wanted to make sure there was nothing tricky happening. when I realized missiles use 7E I was a little surprised.
Super Volt: are you sure D7 isn't used? I'm almost certain it is. there's the 51 Robo charge-up, F1 to start the attack, then 8A for the 'shock portion', D7 for the 'lightning portion', then 6E to finish it. the 'lightning portion' is longer than lightning2, so D7 is the only explanation.
Mother Brain: there's an attack she uses after Upgrade (which only occurs if you destroy all 3 displays). it looks and sounds just like the 'releases energy' attack in the Mammon Machine battle. I think it uses either 7B or D7, probably 7B. eta: just checked, the first phase of GaiaMagnade looks/sounds like the MotherBrain/Mammon Machine attack I'm referring to. hm...
once again, pardon any errors, it's alot to keep track of.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 13, 2018, 08:51:52 pm
I'm sure that only two enemy techs use sound D7, but multiple enemies could use the two techs. I'll double check that list, and get a full list of Super Volt's sounds.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 13, 2018, 11:50:24 pm
Super Volt: 6E, 8A, F1, 51 x3
The Mammon Machine releasing stored energy uses 7B.
Gaia Magnade uses D7 followed by B7.
The Red Eaglet's fire is just 6As in it. Zombor uses the same tech. Mother Brain is also exclusively 6A. Lavos Spawn uses the same tech as Mother Brain. Son of Sun's flames use the Red Eaglet attack, while the head shares an attack with Spekkio that uses 98.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 11:29:13 am
GaiaMagnade checks out. as for 6A, you didn't have to examine all that -- I was confident anyway, just wanted to be certain since the sound is played in fast repetition. and yes, Son of Sun has the 'enemy flare', as does Spekkio.
I figured Mammon Machine uses 7B. since that attack acts just like MotherBrains post-Upgrade attack, I'd assume that's also 7B. can you get a read on it to make sure?
I believe F1 is used in Shock as well as Super Volt.
it seems Super Volt presents a problem. here is its recipe: 51 x3, F1 (cut short), 8A, D7, 6E.
I hear 5 sounds being used. The part with the yellow beams, before the zap at the end, clearly uses either 7B or D7. for reference: https://youtu.be/Gs3jiU63X4g?t=1m49s
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 14, 2018, 11:46:53 am
Shock uses F1 and 8A.
Mother Brain uses the same tech as the Mammon Machine when left without displays.
I can't see a fifth sound in Super Volt. Confusing.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 14, 2018, 12:28:38 pm
There is a D7 in there. I'm looking into how they handled that now.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 12:31:45 pm
I thought so, since the length matches up. This is why it helps to cover both front and back ends.
some sounds are very similar, with the difference being a slightly different quality like 41/B3, or one being longer than the other ie 7F/81, BB/F3, and 7B/D7.
7F longer blast: Fire2 cast, Geyser (Magus), Shadow Doom Blaze, Evil Star 1/3, etc. cf 81
81 shorter blast: Rocket Roll (Chrono/Robo), Mega Bomb, Dark Mist, etc. cf 7f
let me know if there are any issues with the above.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Layer 3 packets can have sounds attached to them, but I haven't documented Layer 3 packets yet. I'll have to do that next.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 02:16:12 pm
so that explains it.
I'm pretty sure my 7F/81 IDs are accurate. I just wanted to run things past you while tying up loose ends, especially since I made a few mistakes/omissions along the way. If you find any other issues with my results, feel free to let me know.
I'd also like to point out one of my recipes:
Dalton Plus summoning fail:........................................D2, 78, C0 x5, 8F, D0
at the end of the Dalton Plus battle, he attempts to summon Golem Boss, only to get hoisted by his own petard and sucked into his own gate (a very fitting end for that character). what's interesting is that, unlike most cutscenes, this takes place while in battle mode. this means they had to use battle sounds for the scene, which they pulled off quite well. it's another example of the craftsmanship in CT, which has become more apparent to me while doing this.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
I'll have to go through the layer 3 packets before this list gets finalized. I'll have to focus my attention there for a while.
F9 - Which Lavos Core tech do you think uses it?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
F9 - Which Lavos Core tech do you think uses it?
it's unused. I'm only guessing that it was intended for Lavos Core based on placement. also, its synth sound is reminiscent of D0, which is used for the Rainbow/insta-kill tech. so my theory is that Lavos Core was intended to have an insta-kill that uses F9, but this idea was scrapped. as I said, it's all speculation on my part.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 07:37:00 pm
Another minor question to fill in a detail: which Lavos Core tech uses 8B? Is it Erase or Tragedy?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 14, 2018, 09:04:27 pm
Ah, I misread that note.
8B is used by a charge attack from the main body. It's the second attack the main body will use when its defense is up.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 09:23:47 pm
don't you mean left/right bits? (of course I'm aware that the center bit isn't the real core, but I want to avoid confusion)
there are two attacks used by the bits when defense is up (as you said). one is B2, A2 (where it spins you), the other is B2, 67, 8B x2 (where it hits you and teleports away). based on the tech list, these attacks must be erase and tragedy (negate and obliterate on DS), the problem is, which is which?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 14, 2018, 09:42:24 pm
I hadn't checked the left bit, but it was definitely used by the right bit.
The attack doesn't have a name in the SNES version, and Might not be specifically identifiable (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/563538-chrono-trigger/42160307) anywhere.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 14, 2018, 10:15:42 pm
maybe Erase and Tragedy are red herrings. either way, I listed them as melee attacks. also, it seems that only the Right Bit uses B2, A2.
I don't mean to burden you with details, I just want to fill in as much as I can.
understood. just made a major fix: Evil Star uses 7F, not 81.
seems like there's always more changes and additions to make. but like I said, it's mostly finished.
I'll try to wait until you've dealt with the level 3 packets.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on April 25, 2018, 03:46:09 am
I have just a few more questions. I'll leave them here, and you can check on these whenever convenient.
59: the Salt sound is used by decedent and departed. I thought it was 'Jump Stab' at first, until I realized that departed uses this for 'Jump'. can you confirm that they both use 59 for the same tech, 'Jump'?
74: there's an attack called 'Flame' used by octoblush, juggler, and others. it's very similar to Inner Lavos' Flame Battle. can you confirm that the Flame enemy tech consists of 74 played in repetition?
CA: what sort of magical damage does 'Burst Ball' do?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on April 25, 2018, 04:29:31 am
Decedent and Departed both use an attack with 59 - it's the same animation for both.
Octoblush, Juggler, and Rolypoly all use the same tech that has a bunch of 74s.
Burst Ball: Dalton Plus has a non-elemental magic attack that seems to match this. TerraMutant's closest are both physical.
I should be able to find the layer 3 packet sounds soon.
Post by: xcalibur on April 25, 2018, 04:39:21 am
The full analysis of Layer 3 packets will take a while. They're looking to be very complex.
I'm going to document all the commands for now, label the individual animation and sound packets, and get any sounds used by layer 3 packets listed to wrap this up.
I've checked 17/139 packets so far. No new sounds to report.
CHRONO TRIGGER: BATTLE SOUND FX & TECH RECIPES
All sounds are labelled with hexadecimal, which uses numbers 0-9 and letters A-F to represent 16 values. With two digits, this allows up to 256 different values, although not all are used.
I've listed the sounds in hexadecimal order. I describe the sounds and the contexts in which they're used in-game. I provide the tech name and a descriptor (such as charge/cast/impact), with the characters/enemies who use the tech in parentheses. I also include additional info, reference frequent combinations using from/to, and compare sounds with cf. To indicate where the sound is in a sequence, I use #/# (eg 2/3 means the second of three sounds). To show that a sound is played in repetition, I use x(number) eg x2 for twice. For sounds which are continuously looped, I place [LOOP] at the end of the entry. I use etc to emphasize that there is other relevant information (techs, enemies) which did not make the cut; ap is used where this information is included in the Appendix. I made sure that each entry takes up only one line on the forum; while not all details fit within the margin, I was still able to cover the relevant information. The basic formula is provided atop the main list; if more convenient, I used short descriptions instead. Overall, I strove for a consistent, legible style throughout.
I was able to identify 188/200 sounds, or 94%. I went solely by the list of 200 SPCs; if there are other sounds, I didn't examine them (my best finds were AC and CA, they were very obscure). The 12 remaining sounds are, to my knowledge, unused in the vanilla game. Unused sounds are indented, tagged with [UNUSED], and given commentary; they are also indexed between the main list and recipes.
The Tech Recipes are combinations of sounds used for various techs employed by both the party and monsters. Aside from novelty value, this should make it easier to look up sounds; just think of a tech in which it's used and check for it. The techs are organized by single/double/triple and enemy techs, as well as by character and in-game order. I use commas for sounds that are played in sequence, and a slash / for sounds which overlap each other. I've documented all party techs and many significant enemy techs.
At the end is the Appendix, which consists of three subsections. First, I list certain entries in greater detail than permitted by the single line margin. Then, I collate and describe the Layer 3 Packets (which are also referenced in the Recipes). Finally, I document the sources used in compiling this work.
The devs were clever in their use of sound fx. Many sounds are re-used in different contexts, while fitting the action each time. For example, C6 is used for the second phase of Evil Star (Lavos Core), as well as Water Rising (Giga Gaia) and Rock Teleport (Azala). I'm sure everyone has noticed that 6D is used for Aura Whirl and Halation, but it's also used by Guardian & bits. In addition, it's usually cut short -- by including the high-pitch tone at the end of Halation, it achieves the uncanny effect of distorting a familiar sound. Also note how 97 is used to very different effect in Lucca's Flare vs. Robo's Area Bomb. By cutting sounds short or repeating them rapidly, they accomplish more with their given resources.
There is an abridged version of the main list available as an alternative.
Credit goes to xcalibur, with honorable mention to Mauron. Any mistakes/omissions are my fault.
I found a way to auto-resize the dropdown in Hi-Tech, allowing longer strings than before. The shortened list shouldn't be necessary.
don't mind me, just moving my content so it's on top of page 5 instead of buried on page 3.
okay, I updated to reflect that. however, I'll keep the abridged version around for novelty and in case it becomes useful.
btw, the margin on the abridged is exactly half that of the main list, which is calibrated to this forum.
I'll test that after I finish going through layer 3 packets for sounds.
Edit: Finished up to 0x46 for sounds. Here are the sounds I found.
2C - 54, D0
38 - B6 (x3), 77
40 - B6 (x2), B7
48 - D7 - Super Volt
5F - D3 - Spire
82 - C3 (x3) - Dark Eternal
86 - 0D
38 and 40 might actually be boss deaths.
Edit again: Update list. Finished up to 60.
Finished the packets.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 01, 2018, 05:47:30 pm
packets 38 and 40 are certainly boss deaths, since the sounds match. just realized I hadn't documented the x2/x3 difference, just went back and corrected/polished those entries.
packet 86 must be the party running away.
I don't know what to make of 2C, I haven't seen any tech that uses electricity and the rainbow synth together.
Visually it seemed right too, but a little off from not having a proper setup. I'll do a little debugging on those later to see what controls them.
Mauron, I'm completely in your debt as you've been editing the Modification wiki; can you also get this list on a page? You have a full remit to do whatever's necessary.
Yeah, I'll throw up something soon.
Added to the existing Text List of Sound Effects (https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Text_List_of_Sound_Effects.html#Battle_sound_effects) page.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 06, 2018, 06:04:59 pm
thanks. I made some more additions/adjustments. I think this is finally done.
in some places, I exchanged etc for ap to direct the reader to the appendix. if you use only the main list, it shouldn't be hard to change them back to etc to avoid confusion, since the ap's are always near the end.
I'm fairly confident in my 7F/81 findings, but if there are any issues there just let me know.
eta: the version you have up should be fine. the only difference I'm aware of is a few entries where I switched the order, but that doesn't matter.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: Mauron on May 06, 2018, 11:01:28 pm
I updated that.
The resource originally on that page had BB listed as [LOOP], but your listing does not. Was that an intentional change?
I kept the [LOOP] tag on that sound in the encyclopedia version.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 06, 2018, 11:17:27 pm
Ok, thanks. I just wanted to make sure everything is coordinated, since I did a bunch of work on this on the same day you posted it up.
BB, the glacier sound, certainly isn't a loop, I don't know how that happened.
eta: the formatting is wonky on there, that must be caused by transitioning from variable to fixed width font. maybe I should adjust it for fixed width?
much better. however, the appendix is a block of text without line breaks, as is the works cited. is this intentional, or an issue to be corrected?
also, I moved my byline to the end of the intro.
this may not be perfect, but it feels done enough to call this 1.0.
 8) this is quite an honor. much appreciated.
That was me not being the best at wiki formatting. I made those changes.
I know how you feel about title changes.  :D
indeed. I guess this + my work as Tarot Doctor was enough for me to qualify.
I may have done the space porcupine's share of this, but you contributed too. this has been productive.
any other issues, just let me know. in the meantime, you can go ahead and disseminate the current version.
I'll be doing some Hi-Tech updating soon, including this sound listing.
Sound is a weak point for me, so I'm glad to have your help with this.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 07, 2018, 06:54:17 pm
I guess sound is a strong suit for me, because I can always tell which sounds are used in a combination. I also recognized a large portion of these from memory (although I always double-checked). for example, I quickly recognized 5D as the Lock tech used by the ocean palace Mage, which might not be so easy for everyone.
one more change to make, near the top of the wiki page:
Quote
Battle sound effects - this archive includes all the battle sound effect, such as Luminaire exploding or Lightning 2 firing off. The naming process is currently incomplete.
not to brag, but I think we can change that now.
One more favor, if you don't mind. I made enough edits to justify updating the version to 1.1. Whenever it's convenient, perhaps you could post the current content from page 5 (I also updated the fixed width version further down). This won't be a routine thing -- if I ask for another update, it won't be until later in the month (if that happens). I think this is finally done, or close enough to it. TIA
Was it just the sound list you changed, or were other sections changed too?
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 08, 2018, 10:25:09 pm
I should've specified: I made changes in the sound list, enemy tech recipes, and appendix.
I discovered that 4B is used for the Goblin's melee (and probably other enemies, although I'm not certain), and 5D is used for Gargoyle's Mantra in addition to Mage's Lock. I also reworked 46 and 69 and expanded them into the appendix, and added four more recipes for a total of 64 enemy techs (which I wanted, since it fits the hexadecimal theme).
One more thing to do, if you'd like. you fixed this on the text list page, but on the main modification page, under Miscellaneous Resources:
I just noticed the list is missing entries for 0E-3F. I can confirm these as having no sound.
I'm sticking the list in Itemizer now, for controlling weapon sounds.
CHRONO TRIGGER: BATTLE SOUND FX & TECH RECIPES
All sounds are labelled with hexadecimal, which uses numbers 0-9 and letters A-F to represent 16 values. With two digits, this allows up to 256 different values, although not all are used.
I've listed the sounds in hexadecimal order. I describe the sounds and the contexts in which they're used in-game. I provide the tech name and a descriptor (such as charge/cast/impact), with the characters/enemies who use the tech in parentheses. I also include additional info, reference frequent combinations using from/to, and compare sounds with cf. To indicate where the sound is in a sequence, I use #/# (eg 2/3 means the second of three sounds). To show that a sound is played in repetition, I use x(number) eg x2 for twice. For sounds which are continuously looped, I place [LOOP] at the end of the entry. I use etc to emphasize that there is other relevant information (techs, enemies) which did not make the cut; ap is used where this information is included in the Appendix. I made sure that each entry takes up only one line on the forum; while not all details fit within the margin, I was still able to cover the relevant information. The basic formula is provided atop the main list; if more convenient, I used short descriptions instead. Overall, I strove for a consistent, legible style throughout.
I was able to identify 188/200 sounds, or 94%. I went solely by the list of 200 SPCs; if there are other sounds, I didn't examine them (my best finds were AC and CA, they were very obscure). The 12 remaining sounds are, to my knowledge, unused in the vanilla game. Unused sounds are indented, tagged with [UNUSED], and given commentary; they are also indexed between the main list and recipes.
The Tech Recipes are combinations of sounds used for various techs employed by both the party and monsters. Aside from novelty value, this should make it easier to look up sounds; just think of a tech in which it's used and check for it. The techs are organized by single/double/triple and enemy techs, as well as by character and in-game order. I use commas for sounds that are played in sequence, and a slash / for sounds which overlap each other. I've documented all party techs and many significant enemy techs.
At the end is the Appendix, which consists of three subsections. First, I list certain entries in greater detail than permitted by the single line margin. Then, I collate and describe the Layer 3 Packets (which are also referenced in the Recipes). Finally, I document the sources used in compiling this work.
The devs were clever in their use of sound fx. Many sounds are re-used in different contexts, while fitting the action each time. For example, C6 is used for the second phase of Evil Star (Lavos Core), as well as Water Rising (Giga Gaia) and Rock Teleport (Azala). I'm sure everyone has noticed that 6D is used for Aura Whirl and Halation, but it's also used by Guardian & bits. In addition, it's usually cut short -- by including the high-pitch tone at the end of Halation, it achieves the uncanny effect of distorting a familiar sound. Also note how 97 is used to very different effect in Lucca's Flare vs. Robo's Area Bomb. By cutting sounds short or repeating them rapidly, they accomplish more with their given resources.
There is an abridged version of the main list available as an alternative.
Credit goes to xcalibur, with honorable mention to Mauron. Any mistakes/omissions are my fault.
Title: Re: Identifying battle sound effects
Post by: xcalibur on May 31, 2018, 09:33:02 pm
when I first published 1.0, I wasn't expecting to make a significant update the very next day. as a result, I decided to give it time before updating again, and it paid off. 1.2 has a bunch of minor improvements, and a major addition: a subsection for level 3 packets under Appendix. the level 3 packets are also in the recipes, but not in the main list (I couldn't fit them all, which was inconsistent). I also reworked the basic formula, and restated it atop the main list.
to make matters easier for Mz Mauron, I posted the encyclopedia-ready version just above. btw, I intended additional info, level 3 packets, and works cited as subsections under Appendix. perhaps you could format it that way on the wiki, if you agree and find it workable.
I'll try to track down that mystery layer 3 packet later. I should have a chance to get this in the encyclopedia over the weekend.
thanks. I just made a minor stylistic update, bringing it to 1.21. aside from the organizational issues I mentioned above, it seems that the unused sound index was omitted from the wiki.
as for the packet, I can't think of any context where those sounds are used together in the game. Maybe it was intended for a portal opening up, but it's unused? who knows.
Level 3 should be Layer 3 in the notes.
Packet 2C is definitely assigned to a tech, but I'm not sure if that tech is actually used.
 :? fixed. I don't know why my brain did that. At least it wasn't as bad as when I listed the Winged Ape enemy as Primeape, which is a pokemon. that was easily my silliest mistake, even worse than overlooking Zombor's attack.
interesting. I'll update that if you can find more info.
Well, they're both apes. :P
I updated the encyclopedia with the new version.
I also had a chance to check on layer 3 packet 2c, which is used by enemy tech 5E. Enemy tech 5e is unused in game.
that's true.
not to nitpick, but the layer 3 subsection isn't formatted properly. there's also an issue with the first formula given in the intro (the second on the main list is fine).
can you find any more info on enemy tech 5E, ie what sort of attack it was or where it was intended to be used? tia
Whoops, missed that bit. Fixed.
I can show you what it looks like (https://youtu.be/tId7fx4psSo), but I can only guess at it's intent. It's a non-elemental attack, despite its appearance, and it uses magic and magic defense for damage calculation.
The video looks better if you put it in 240p.
interesting. it might've been intended for the Mother Brain sidequest or the Black Omen, but who knows.
updated to 1.22 with that info and a change to the introduction.
Or something else future related. It's really hard to say.
Updated the encyclopedia.
I finally got it updated.
thank you! maybe this is finally done, but who knows. I tried to get it right the first time, only to make a bunch of updates like everyone else. I approach every undertaking with work ethic and attention to detail, and this is no exception. the complexity of a seemingly simple 16 bit game made this a challenge.
btw, here's an informal changelog, to the best of my recollection:
1.1: added newly discovered contexts for sounds which I had thought were only used in one place (4B, 5D);
new recipes (boss breakdowns, Lock/can't use techniques, etc) bringing the total to 64;
expanded the additional info under Appendix with a couple more entries (in particular, I wanted to flesh out 91, since the cyclone sound is used by several party techs, as well as two enemy techs that I'm aware of).
1.2: the addition of the layer 3 packets section;
removed layer 3 packets from the main list (because I couldn't include them consistently);
labelled the additional info subsection under Appendix;
improved the formula and placed it atop the main list;
minor changes (eg changing a comma to a semicolon for 03).
1.21: style/organization: only major section titles are in ALL CAPS, subsection titles are only Capitalized;
fixed 'level 3' typo, changing all mentions to 'layer 3'.
1.22: info added on mystery layer 3 tech;
change to introduction (iirc removing the formula, leaving it only above main list).
1.23: minor changes. rewrote the description of the Appendix in the intro;
added an etc to D0 (to indicate that it's used in other contexts besides Rainbow, namely Dalton summoning fail and the mystery layer 3 tech);
improved the description of the aforementioned mystery tech to 'electric ring/flash'.
Post by: xcalibur on June 26, 2018, 05:53:34 am
I beg your pardon, just one more thing. I'll need the layer 3 packets section updated with the fixed-width version, provided below:
2C: 54, D0......unused enemy tech 5E (electric ring/flash, non-elemental magic attack)
38: B6 x3, 77...boss breakdown
40: B6 x2, B7...large boss breakdown
48: D7..........Super Volt
5F: D3..........Spire
82: C3 x3.......Dark Eternal
86: 0D..........party runs away
it can stay the same version, since this is just an aesthetic fix. hopefully you don't mind.
Done.
One of the sounds currently listed as unused might be used somewhere. I saw it in a super command (tech shortcut for reused data) last night, but I haven't yet confirmed if that super command is used anywhere.
I'd be interested in learning more about that, and any other 'unused' sounds which might be used. even if they're in unused techs, I can still elaborate with that info (like in the layer 3 section).
the ride never ends.
All I can tell you at this point is 5c is used before 71 in one super command, and there weren't any other unused sounds in that area.
While sound 5C is used in super command 19, that super command isn't used by any tech.
I'm not sure if it's worth updating just to cover that. I'll wait for more info for the time being.
Just doublechecking with xcalibur/Mauron; was this list in the encyclopedia yet? Can totally add.
CHRONO TRIGGER: BATTLE SOUND FX & TECH RECIPES
All sounds are labelled with hexadecimal, which uses numbers 0-9 and letters A-F to represent 16 values. With two digits, this allows up to 256 different values, although not all are used.
I've listed the sounds in hexadecimal order. I describe the sounds and the contexts in which they're used in-game. I provide the tech name and a descriptor (such as charge/cast/impact), with the characters/enemies who use the tech in parentheses. I also include additional info, reference frequent combinations using from/to, and compare sounds with cf. To indicate where the sound is in a sequence, I use #/# (eg 2/3 means the second of three sounds). To show that a sound is played in repetition, I use x(number) eg x2 for twice. For sounds which are continuously looped, I place [LOOP] at the end of the entry. I use etc to emphasize that there is other relevant information (techs, enemies) which did not make the cut; ap is used where this information is included in the Appendix. I made sure that each entry takes up only one line on the forum; while not all details fit within the margin, I was still able to cover the relevant information. The basic formula is provided atop the main list; if more convenient, I used short descriptions instead. Overall, I strove for a consistent, legible style throughout.
I was able to identify 188/200 sounds, or 94%. I went solely by the list of 200 SPCs; if there are other sounds, I didn't examine them (my best finds were AC and CA, they were very obscure). The 12 remaining sounds are, to my knowledge, unused in the vanilla game. Unused sounds are indented, tagged with [UNUSED], and given commentary; they are also indexed between the main list and recipes.
The Tech Recipes are combinations of sounds used for various techs employed by both the party and monsters. Aside from novelty value, this should make it easier to look up sounds; just think of a tech in which it's used and check for it. The techs are organized by single/double/triple and enemy techs, as well as by character and in-game order. I use commas for sounds that are played in sequence, and a slash / for sounds which overlap each other. I've documented all party techs and many significant enemy techs.
At the end is the Appendix, which consists of three subsections. First, I list certain entries in greater detail than permitted by the single line margin. Then, I collate and describe the Layer 3 Packets (which are also referenced in the Recipes). Finally, I document the sources used in compiling this work.
The devs were clever in their use of sound fx. Many sounds are re-used in different contexts, while fitting the action each time. For example, C6 is used for the second phase of Evil Star (Lavos Core), as well as Water Rising (Giga Gaia) and Rock Teleport (Azala). I'm sure everyone has noticed that 6D is used for Aura Whirl and Halation, but it's also used by Guardian & bits. In addition, it's usually cut short -- by including the high-pitch tone at the end of Halation, it achieves the uncanny effect of distorting a familiar sound. Also note how 97 is used to very different effect in Lucca's Flare vs. Robo's Area Bomb. By cutting sounds short or repeating them rapidly, they accomplish more with their given resources.
There is an abridged version of the main list available as an alternative.
Credit goes to xcalibur, with honorable mention to Mauron. Any mistakes/omissions are my fault.
