Well, I searched high and low throughout the internet for info about the Chrono Trigger Prerelease,a nd never found this site. Hmm...
I ended up making my own site about it, which I put up rather recently:
http://ryoga.heypoorplayer.org/ctpp/
I'm interested in a linkback with you guys, if that's cool. You guys have lots of stuff I don't, but I have a couple things you don't, heh. Anyway, awesome job on it.
-
Damn, you do have ton of graphics and interesting stuff. Uh...what to do...
Man. You realize the Mission Statement of the Compendium is to collect everything. I'm not sure what policy I could make here though to allow it.

Well, by all means, take my stuff. =P
A mention of either me or my site would be nice though, but I don't wanna sound like one of those OMFG GIMME CREDIT!!!1 assholes, hehe.
-
I took a quick look at it. Pretty impressive! I love all the screenshots!
-
One thing I noticed...Maybe it's just me, but don't you think that the 8th party member overworld sprite in 65000000 BC looks a lot like a Reptite? Maybe I'm just a retard...
-
Apparently, there were rare collectible cards which were offered for Japanese people who preordered the game. These cards shows a lot of scenes or stuff which are quite different from the final game, like an airship at Zeal, some Zombors with blades instead of arms, etc. There are scans of them at CuteLucca (http://www.cutelucca.com/)'s site (click on CT Collection). Maybe the CCompendium could ask her if these pictures can be used here?
There are also some nice CT and CC doushinji there.
-
Good detective work.
All right; I'm going to make a large mention of it as news.

Thanks for pointing this out! Actually, I had just found CuteLucca.com this morning when someone linked me to the doujin there, but hadn't explored the site yet. I emailed her about using the card scans on my site, until I get around to buying the cards myself (I always ignored them on ebay, unbeknowest of their screenshots, hehe) and scan them at higher res.
ZeaLitY, cool, any mention is always welcome. I'll be sure to put a linkback and mention you all as well. =)
-
Yeah, I had heard about and seen the Airship before on screenshots somewhere...But I didn't know where it came from...So much stuff they hacked out of the game...And yet, they seemingly kept so much as well...What the hell?
-
Hate to break it to you guys, but those pictures from the cards are probably mock-ups. C&P from my post at Lost Levels:
"Is it me, or do the pictures on these cards look like mock-ups? On the picture with the two skeletons with sword arms, the screen is not centered. The screenshots that show Black Tyrano and Giga Gaia (who has arms, unlike the final version) show them working, but in our Beta (which probably came after these shots were made) they didn't work at all. The full shot of the Blackbird and the church shot reek of promotional pictures that were made to only show off the game and probably would not have appeared in the final version."
Other stuff I noticed about the cards.
"The strangest shot is the Black Omen one. Queen Zeal has a different outfit and seems to be some sort of panther instead of a human, the Black Omen itself is zoomed out and doesn't have anything else under it's top and Frog is making a pose that I don't recall him making in the final version."
-
Yeah, that stuff is obviously not from the final version though...

Oh, I know well about mockups (from working with beta crap with Sonic games), and in all actuality that's probably what they are. But don't forget that many times mockups use preexisting ideas for scenes, as well as graphics that will be used in the game. That alone makes them worth looking at, even if only taken at face value.

Very well; I'll post a disclaimer. For some reason, I think of the Dust Hill zone...
That's right. Ryoga, if you're involved with the Sonic scene -- the current webmaster of the Sonic 2 Beta ultimate site is known to me as Pelord, and we met during my first days on the internet ever, back in 1998 on Goldeneye 007 boards. He had a very cool .xoom. site, and we had a neat community of discussing the James Bond game. Well, I came across all the Sonic stuff, as I got into emulation to hear the music again, and found the Sonic 2 Beta page. I let Pelord know, but I never thought he'd end up being the current webmaster. Hurrah.
Oh, and one problem with porting your research -- IE insists on saving your pictures as untitled.bmp, and it isn't just me. A defense measure perhaps?

Hahahah, good ol Pelord. He knows me, although not like on a personal level. Yeah, he ran his own site and eventually took over Simon Wai's site, iirc. Personally, I was on the other side of the community, at Area 51 and later on at Sonic CulT. Memories. =)
Actually, that's a known bug with IE, and one that I don't really know how to correct. I use either Firefox or Sleipnir personally. It's not a defense thing, people can use the stuff from my site as they want. =P
-
Got it; I'll try another option. Thanks.

...And Simon came back eventually and Pelord handed S2B to him. :O

this kinda has to do with what you guys are talking about, but i have been searching thru the chrono prerelease for odd levels, something i havent seen in the final.
now i know the chrono compedium has most of the stuff, but there is one scene/level that i believe the chrono compendium missed.
this is apparently from zeal, as it was playing the zeal theme when you enter the queens throne room or the hall of the mammon machine.
what do you suppose this room is for? i could speculate a room in the north palace, or a secret room.
i got to this place in the pre release by useing these codes:
ff68-740d (walkthru walls code)
7e010090 (level warp code)
-
Already got it. (http://www.chronocompendium.com/wiki/images/a/a0/Zeal_Dungeon_%28CTP%29.png)
I'd say that pretty much everything from the CT Beta has been found by now, though. :/
-
everything except the stadium like building in 2300 AD.
we still havent figured out what it is.
-
All we do know that it's name is Robot Village, which was extracted from the area listing in the final ROM. There's no way to figure out it's purpose, as we have no way of contacting the scriptwriter about it and the beta has nothing about it.
-
hey, i think i may have found something. its most likely been found already, but the level is too big to take a screenshot
its like the ocean palace.. except, much smaller and different passageways.. hmmm
here are the 2 codes i used if you want to look:
ff68-740d
7e01002b
you must reset with these codes on, otherwise it will load up the save screen.
managed to take a partial screen of the level:

Look, I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but have you even bothered to look at our section devoted to the prerelease? (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Chrono_Trigger_Prerelease) Look through that before posting anything else about the beta here, for my sake.
-
um, yes i did look, i guess i missed that one, sry. i noticed there is no screenshots for Death peak...
-
Hmm. Well, I know for a fact that there were two unreleased songs for Chrono Trigger. One of them was a battle song, I think a boss fight or something. And the other one was a theme song for a location. It was called Sleeping Mountain or Snowing Mountain or something, if I'm correct. The website that had these two songs is unfortunately dead however. I tried going back to it after four years of discovering it but the site is gone I'm afraid. It was called Chrono Trigger Temple. The two unreleased songs were in the CT song section or whatever it was called. I don't know if this has been covered but I thought that I'd add this tid bit of information. :)
-
Yeah, some of our people have gone in and tried to figure out what the Singing Mountain area was supposed to be. It was pretty cool. I can't remember exactly where it was...
-
All about Singing Mountain (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Singing_Mountain_%28CTP%29)
There was a Battle 1 remix for the Prehistoric Era that was found in the ROM, so it's possible that Battle 2 was the song that played when you fight enemies in 2300 A.D.
-
Ahh, so that was Singing Mountain. I saw that same pic of the inside of that mountain from some other site. Unfortunately this computer doesn't have sound, at least I don't think it does, so I can't really listen to them. But if I heard both songs, the unreleased battle/boss theme and the Singing Mountain theme, I would know it. It's ironic too because I haven't heard those songs for about four years, give or take some time, but I can still remember those songs like it was yesterday.
I hope it's not too much trouble, but could someone maybe post some links to where I could find these songs? I wanted to save them somewhere so whenever I am on a computer with working sound, I could listen to them. Those are truly great theme songs.
-
All of the songs ripped right from the game itself, including Singing Mountain. (http://www.zophar.net/zsnes/spc/)
Various tools that play .spcs. (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/spc.html)
-
Has anyone ever noticed that the Singing Mountain song and the game over song are the same?
-
The game over song is The Day the World Revived. :O
-
Really? The game over midi on Icy Brian's music page is the same as the Singing Mountain one. Hmmm...we should say something to him...
Wait, I don't mean the Ending song. I mean the song that you hear when you die. Well, I haven't gotten a game over in a long time, so I don't know.

Man, I still wish Square/somebody would make an official/fanmade version of CT based loosely on the prerelease, a sort of "Special Edition -- Now with features left on the cutting room floor!" like they did with the Star Wars movies. That would be cool. of course they'd have to leave *some* stuff out like useless things that made sense to be left out of the final version. It could be called "Chrono Trigger DX" or something like that. Of course, I'm *still* waiting for Culture Brain to make a "Magic of Scheherazade 2".
BTW, ya know that foil card with the beta picture of Zeal with that airship in the Blackbird's place? I wonder if there's a hidden sprite *somewhere* of that airship, it'd look great in a CT based game I'd love to make one day.
And one more thing, kind of *off* topic but is there a name for those fighter ship things seen in that scen of Dinopolis near the end of Chrono Cross?
-

The airship was from a beta earlier than the demo. The unused sprite isn't in the game data, unfortunately.

Whee, been a while, but I'm back. The old site went down, then was recently brought back. So: http://ryoga.heypoorplayer.org/chrono is thw new URL to my site. Got a bit of new stuff up you may wanna mention on CC.
Also, anyone know where Michael Springer (the Temporal Flux author) hangs out on the internet, any forums or irc rooms? I'd like to talk to him about a version with Japanese and pre-release offsets...
-
http://board.acmlm.org and also here, occasionally. I think he's looking to get 2.00 wrapped up and then move on to other projects, though. Anyway, if he doesn't answer here before you get to ACMLM's, just post in the Temporal Flux thread in the rom hacking section.
This new Prerelease stuff rules! I'll update the site in the links section and announce this for the saturday update.
-
Thanks for the translations, great to see the site back up again.
The demo version is 11/17, and 1/11 1G for the final version. With the final version date, it would be 2 months to the day of the 3/11 Japanese release, leaving exactly two months for beta testing, manufacturing, etc.
-
Thanks for all the help, I'll try to get in touch with him soon. I'll also try to hang around here some more, I need a place with not-dumb CT fans. =P
