Title: An as-of-yet unheard of writer appears...
Post by: Smokescale on December 21, 2009, 12:59:24 am
Hello, figure I might as well introduce myself. The name's Smokescale Aquatos (don't see any point in mentioning my real name) but Smokey works just as well. I'm a writer who happens to have loved Chrono Trigger for roughly half of his life. I was first introduced to it by my cousin who let me borrow his old SNES cartridge...and I immediately became hooked. I've adored this game since my first time playing it.

Recently, I purchased the DS re-re-release (okay so it wasn't recently, I preordered...but that wasn't THAT long ago!) and got right back into it, even enjoying the additional content (though it felt a bit flatter than the rest of the game...I'm not gonna complain all that much, it's still Chrono Trigger). As I played and began seeking wisdom from the Compendium, I found some of the various articles and read through them, fascinated with what I found. As the weeks passed and the knowledge sunk in, I began to formulate a small "what if" concept which grew and grew and grew until it became the very story I have but recently completed.

Normally I don't write fanfiction. I prefer to use original concepts, characters, and settings when at all possible (though I've been known to set that aside in certain situations, only two other times as of yet) so I was somewhat hesitant to try and write this out in story format. Why? Because I don't fancy myself THAT good of a writer! I had visions of completing the story only to be booed and flamed off the internet for trashing a beloved video game with my abomination of a retcon...if it could so be called. So, it was with great tentativeness that I began, and once I started, the story simply flowed out of me like a......well... I'll spare you my debauched sense of humor and say once I started I found it difficult to stop.

I've posted the completed story (or rather links to it) in the Submissions section and hope that someone from here offers me some idea of whether or not it is truly worthy of the original source material or if I'm simply bastardizing a classic story.

In the mean time, I welcome conversation, questions, playful insults at the notion that I am indeed a FURREH!! (OH NOES!! IN MY INTERNETS!? GTFO!!) but please, keep in mind that I do not let that affect what it is I have written or how I intend on interacting here.

I'm just a normal guy... who... happens to have a rather weird side to him.

Drop me a line, bake me a cookie, toss me a pie, whatever ya like, interaction is always good.

Welcome! Ahh, there's nothing like the smell of a good retcon in the morning...even Square Enix writers enjoy retconning their own stuff nowadays, so why not the fans?

I missed your novelette at first somehow; here's a link for everyone's convenience (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,8306.0.html). I'm hugely backed up in trying to provide feedback for others (sorry sorry Skylark) but I'll see if I can't take a gander too.

I'd sure love to get some feedback from some hard core Chrono Trigger fans. I've posted it in a few of my usual spots but it hasn't gotten as big a reaction as I would have hoped (mostly because of what I'm usually known for writing I'm sure).

Also...how do you arrange it so that you get an e-mail when someone replies? I don't see any settings to have that arranged by default in the user details area. Is it manual per thread?

EDIT: ...okay...that was a noob moment. I just went back to confirm what I thought I had seen earlier...apparently there is an area in the settings for it and I've turned it on...

Ah, welcome. The name is Temporal Knight, but most of the folks around here call me TK for short. A pleasure to meet you.

A writer, eh? Well then, I'll have to check out some of your works! I enjoy reading other people's work in my free time.

A furry eh? What does that have to do with anything? Here at the Compendium, we accept all types. I advise you pay close attention to the man in charge, Zeality, and burn in the Springtime of Youth with us.

I'm one of the (relatively) few furs who doesn't mind making fun of the fact that I am a furry, hence the "IN MY INTERNETS!?" comment...I'm a bit silly, what can I say?

:DWelcome Smokescale, and don't worry there's nothing wrong with being a furry.

Queen Zeal fanboy huh? I don't suppose you would happen to know if she has a first name? (I kinda took a creative liberty with that in the aforementioned story)

It's a time-honored fan tradition to put "jeanne" somewhere in QZ's full name. Symmetry started it waaay back, I've done it, and ZeaLitY's got Samele Creojeanne for QZ's privately-used name.

To be fair, I was struggling to think of what to call her and a friend suggested that and I liked it. Her daughter's name is Schala, her son's name is Janus... Jenna kinda sounds like perhaps it had some influence on the names that came after it.

Nice to have a new writer in these parts.

You can call me GenesisOne.  I too write FanFic, but I'm more inclined to parody than retcons or spin-offs.

If you ever need advice or have questions, feel free to ask.  I'll check out your work sometime.

In the meantime, I hope I can make you laugh with my FanFic.

A furry?  While I do have my reservations against, you're the first to come off as a nice guy.  Most of them can't seem to handle criticism of their stories and artwork, but that's what makes TEH INTERNETS very interesting and diverse.

Hey, I'm supposed to be the silly one here!

I call dibs on this half of the Compendium.

Whatever you do, don't cross my chalk line or else I'll clone the shit out of you!

:-P

BTW I jest, no offense intended, and welcome!

I'll hafta have a look when I get a chance...and yes, us furs do make for a good many lulz when you find the right ones...other times we just ignore it...and other times, we dive headlong into it to garner lulz for ourselves, which ultimately turns epic fail into epic win.

Whatever you do, don't cross my chalk line or else I'll clone the shit out of you!

*did not know he had shit in him that could be cloned!* The scat fans are gonna LOVE you!

Contest? What contest is this that you speak of?

Ooooooh....ouch...um, February 2010? I dun think I can come up with anything that fast, especially when I'm in the middle of a few other things I wanna get written. Oh well, maybe another contest will come around.

Yeah, I had the same feeling, too, but not because of the deadline.

By the way, when you're creatively writing, even if you don't have a deadline to met, you should pretend there is one.  Some of the best creative moments came under pressure, real or imagined (though the same also goes for being in states of calm and lull, as well).

Well, the vast majority of the time, when I start a story, I've already got an idea of how I want it to end, how it will start, and a general notion of how to get from point A to point B. Of course, there are instances where I start and don't know entirely where I'm going...those usually end up getting left incomplete on my hard drive.

Welcome to the forums!  We're a lively bunch.  I hope you enjoy yourself.  :)  I'm Sajainta, but you can call me Saj or Sajjy or Sajerific or whatever floats your boat.  Pleasure to meet you!  I love your Metalocalypse quote, by the way.  :D

I'm Catapult Trebuchet. Nice to see another author on here. I tend to avoid Fanfiction and write my own stories, but occassionally I dabble in Role-Plays that require some fanfiction. Anyways, we're all very silly here and looks can be very deceiving.

And filling in for certain people:

S'okay, better late than never, right?

By the way, I've noticed my post over in the submission area's gotten a good many views in the last week or so, but no one's left a comment or thought about it. I don't mean to sound whiny or anything but, I'd really like to get some feedback on it.

I'm pretty terrible when it comes to keeping up with things, and I feel bad for not greeting a fellow author of all people. Better late than never, I suppose. Welcome tot he party!

I look forward to reading your story...well, someday. With all the other things going on, I'm pretty busy (sorry, that's probably not what you're wanting to hear). This weekend I'll sit down and begin reading it, perhaps. Yeah.

Take your time, I'm not about to demand you shoehorn it into your schedule. I'm just kinda dancin' in my seat waiting to see what people think... if I've got the talent to write a real novel, not just fanfiction.
