Title: You've lost everything.
Post by: heyguys on January 31, 2010, 06:16:29 pm
I know this is old news, but I need to say something here, to remind you that every fucking project that you've ever had on the fucking site is now gone. I also hate how everyone was like "Oh well". Did you have any idea what the fuck just happened?

You could have taken Crimson Echoes to court. You could have won. Easily. You are defended by the copyright act of 1976. And even if Square's evil money-making office fucks sue you, what the fuck are you going to lose? Some money? The site? (Which is worthless now. Seriously, everything besides the community itself can be found on other websites.) At least you could have kept your dignity, and fought your years-worth of work to the end.

THIS is how corrupt bullshit companies are known. This. The only company I can think of that doesn't fuck people over that obviously aren't making profit off of unofficial projects, is Nintendo and Sega. And even then, they do whatever they can to get billions of dollars every day, and troll every last one of their fans when E3 rolls around.

You should NEVER have stood for that. Fuck Square.

I doubt Zeality makes anything near $150K, so... I think it was better to cancel it with their finances intact than get $150K taken away and still needing to cancel. What would you have chosen?

With the economy the way it is, the last thing needed is to be in debt for losing a lawsuit...

Another one eh? Let me make this as clear as I can. NO. If you want to make your own Chrono project and, when SE threatens you with the hammer, stand up to them, then by all means go ahead. It doesn't affect me. But stay out of our way.

Well said. Aggressive criticism like this should be left for President Obama's progress.

Let's get one thing straight, heyguys:

If we'd have known that before the whole mess last year with Squeenix, then maybe we could've stood a fighting chance, but it's in the past.

Believe me when I say that I know how you feel, but venting your anger at us isn't going to change the fact that what's done is done, and there's nothing you can do to bring back CE.

Just let it go.

Well, that's not entirely true. I've come across a "rehack" so to speak, of the 40%. While it is good to see an attempt to revive CE, this apparently comes from people who hate Zeality and after trying it out on ZSNES, I've observed all credit from the original CE team was removed.

The guys who did the rehack didn't put their own credits, but they hid behind Father's sprite and there were some hateful comments toward the CE team...

Apparently you misunderstand. I'm talking about what you should have done, not what you should be doing right now. And I already knew this was old news, but I never did see a thread that was like this other than stupid "OMG LET'S MAKE A USELESS PETITION" threads.

The main point of this thread is that you got blackmailed by Square, and all projects have since been removed, and yet you STILL suck their dicks. You can't say that what they did was with good intentions either, as I said in the OP. I don't see any better place to put this anyway.

No, only a few people do. I have no love for SE, only Square. That company died in the merger.

I have to say, if Square Enix was a guy and Microsoft was a girl, they'd likely make tons of demon babies...

Ehem... ehh looky in my direction...

This is rather demotivational... people who are on the site actually looking for projects fail to see mine. No wonder I get so little exposure.

While modding played a great enriching role in the lives of all those who took part, it's true that it was but one facet of Chrono fandom in the grand scheme of things. All the fanart, fanfiction, animations, and even interactive non-modding projects like Neo-Fusion's and LanceVII's prove that "not all has been lost." I think the next Dream Splash! will be a great opportunity for the community to announce its resilience in uber resounding fashion.

Also check the RP threads, there are 3 active RP's going on right now.

We haven't seen any comics from maggiekarp for a while, and I haven't made any in a while, but mysticalpha's comics are still going strong.

I'm beta testing Lance's new game and heyguys, if you're a fan of anything Chrono, you're gonna love it!

Of course, neofusion's CT Apocalypse is wonderful to watch/play, and each new episode just gets better and better.

And there are other things that get posted constantly, music remixes like Chronotorious, sprites, and that one flash cartoon in a semi-DBZ style with the outrageous fighting and tech animations.

All is NOT lost to the Compendium.

I, too, have a project a few months in development. I have it under an NDA for protection of interest currently, but the select few I've told... you know what I mean.

The only thing that can be drawn from this is the fact that any project cannot be advertised. What makes you think people stopped developping? Not like SE monitors everyone who every uttered the word Chrono's computers

I know of a project, and Im positive im not the only one. Lots of people just lose interest but, as long as you dont aim too high theres no reason it cant make progress

I wouldn't be surprised if every SE employee were a scientologist. They go hand in hand.

I'm not defending SE by any means, but to paint them as some evil company plotting to ruin fanboys' dreams is just silly.

Obviously, Square could've taken the high road and embraced the project, but they didn't. Does it suck? Absolutely. Big time, but Crimson Echoes was a huge project that was well known in a lot of circles. As soon as SE heard about it, they shut it down. They weren't looming in the shadows waiting for the right moment. CE was using Square's intellectual property without permission, and it was going to be distributed to the masses. Is it really a surprise that Square wanted to shut them down? It wasn't just a simple fan project. It was a rom hack. To even get the hack, most people would download the illegal rom of the original game. Square naturally saw this as a problem and shut it down. I think 90% of companies wouldn've done the same. If this was an original creation things might've been different, but it was a hack of a rom that in most cases (I'm talking about potential players here, not the creators of CE) would've been obtained illegally.

Now I'm not defending Square, as much as stating the obvious. I am going to defend the creators of CE though. They took time out of their own lives to create this project without getting anything in return. When a company throws a C & D at them, why should they try and fight it? Why should they waste more time, money, and effort? Not to mention the fact that their efforts may be futile. Again CE was made from a rom hack. People downloading CE were technically downloading a version of the original CT rom. CE was technically distributing an illegal copy of CT. Who knows how this would've turned out in court?

CE was a great project. I would've loved to have played it. I really enjoyed the youtube videos. It looked like an amazing game. That being said, it really bothers me when people feel they were entitled to it, or entitled for the CE team to fight for it. I hate when people act like it's so easy to stand up and fight a huge company, especially in these whacky circumstances. Trials cost time and money, even when you win.

I hope that you guys have confirmed that the C&D letter was in fact legitimate. This comment on one of the CEmemorial videos caught my attention:

Quote
That Cease and Desist order is fake. It's signed "square enix legal department". C&D orders are signed with a real persons name; usually the lawyer representing the company, or an officials name and their rank or position in the company. The Crimson Echoes team is gullible and was tricked. If you call the number on the C&D order 310-846-0400, and ask them if it's true, they won't know what you're talking about. They never sent it. Zeality is freaked out by 1 fake letter.

It'd be a shame if all this trouble and derailment of fan projects was caused by an epic trolling.

No, we confirmed by calling and examining the PDF's meta-data. It all checked out. That fucker can blow a dick.

alright. dont take it as me trying to stir up any drama (ive accidentally done that before), I just wasn't sure if it was confirmed real. I hadn't noticed a confirmation in looking over the huge threads about it, but then I found it unwieldy to read everything.

I offer my utmost condolences for all this. It is sisyphean to lose such a work of art to corporate fucktards.

But this has been thoroughly discussed, so I'll say no more on this.

xcalibur, you can read our transcript of the radio interview with Agent 12 (http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Agent_12_Radio_Interview) for the most comprehensive account of how it all went down.

BTW, anyone know where Meteor Radio's gone since then? That was an awesome show they had on, and it's too bad you probably have to be in Louisiana to listen to it IIRC. I hope they're still around -- the weblink's broken for me now.

Once again I feel the need to bark. Fuck square. You are loosing NO money by throwing your letter at us, WE are keeping the chrono community alive and you should have released a new game. How about Radical Dreamers? Its in english, it would cost you almost no money at all to release to America 'officially.' when you complain about copyright and money loss for something you will not sell, you are not loosing any money.

Suck my balls Square. Both of em, at the same time, in your mouth, start suckin.

Radical Dreamers has no official English translation. There's a fan translation, and even if SE wanted to release RD officially overseas, they wouldn't use that one. Besides, the actual reason we never got RD was because Kato himself was unsatisfied with it. He choose to not include it in the PSX and DS ports, even when it was Square itself who wanted to include it. And to wit, Cross itself was a re-do of RD for him.

Really now, you can't go blaming Square Soft/Enix for everything that happens that you don't happen to like...

It's not a debate, it's more of a correction. If you want to dislike SE, you're free to do so.

Just... do it over things that are actually true.
