Hello Chrono Compendium, long time no talk!
Just wanted to let you all know that I have officially began the Crimson Echoes DVD Project, I have a test version of Disc 1 (the first 19 vids and some bonus vids) that I am encoding right now to see how it is going to look on an actual DVD player, and then I can begin SUBTITLES!
I will post as soon as the project is done with info on where to download it. I have a server I am going to try to place the torrents on, but I won't be able to seed it for too long due to the bandwidth limits and space limits it has.
Thanks for your time everyone!
-
Sweet! Thank you for your effort. :D
One thing though... subtitles? What for? Or would it be subtitled in different languages so other people can enjoy Crimson Echoes?
-
Oh sorry, forgot to clarify. :-) The subtitles are actually going to be the YouTube annotations in the original videos, of the team talking about the game and stuff. :D
-
Oh excellent! I love the commentary JP(mainly) and the others gave, IMHO; it's a great addition and really felt like I was watching the videos with the CE team.
Well, I was hoping someone with the necessary skills and knowledge would be willing to do this. I salute you NickyT, and I will be waiting for your awesome contribution.
Thanks once again. :D
-
No problem, I feel glad to give back to the community finally! :-) I have a test version of the DVD burned, and will be testing it out over the coming days to see if I can bump up the quality and what not.
-
Wow, thanks for the work NickyT! So only 19 videos fit on a single DVD...I wonder when the Collector's Set will be out! :D
-
Hehe definitely! I am probably going to release them all at once, I am going for sizing it down to 3 DVD's.
I still have some compression tricks and re-encoding to do, I am going to see if I can get better quality and/or lower size without sacrificing too much. I also want to re-encode the audio, as it is choppy in parts where the actual emulator audio was playing. It plays awesome in VLC, but not in WMP11.
The menu's are looking pretty cool though, I will post screenshots when I can! :-)
-
Perhaps they could play as equally awesome in MP4, or even AVI format.
Yeah, I agree. The subtitles are a really nice touch to the videos. Glad they're being added.
Looking forward to its initial release... and the subsequent conniption fit of Squeenix in response.
-
Hehe :-D
I'm just hoping that maybe it'll help Squeenix show that even though they are trying to keep the Chrono franchise on the backburner, that there are still Chrono fans out there, and that even though they C&D'd the game, there are still people who love it!
-
Oh wow...CE on your iPod. The possibilities, the possibilities.
-
Funny that you say that FW, it's actually on my Zune right now! I let it encode overnight one night and it's one of the best things to ever set foot on my HDD of my Zune. :-D
-
Zune???
Whatcha smokin' there? Last I checked, almost nobody uses a Zune.
Trust me when I say that you're better off with Podcasts that Zunecasts.
-
hahaha! actually I have an ipod as well, without wanting to start a microsoft vs apple war, the zune just suits me better. :-)
btw I just watched disc 1 test version, turning out awesome so far.
quick idea ill throw out: video interviews for bonus features?
-
Yes, yes, a thousand times YES!
This could really become a real DVD featuring all sorts of extras, I know it's easier said than done, but you got the commentary so far, the interviews are the next step, and then... who knows?
If it matters at all, I give my thumbs up for the interview idea.
-
NickyT, don't let me forget to give you the trailers, so you can put those on too.
-
Interviews, huh?
Who would you like to interview? Obviously, the programmers, scenario makers, and writers.
Would you also include people with personal testimonials about how CE had an impact on them?
-
Nice idea! Maybe the Beta Testers?
I don't know... I would be very happy with just the videos at my grasp without having to wait Youtube loading times and 10 minute limits. Everything else is just gravy, IMHO, of course.
-
I love this idea. CE: The Movie.
It'd be better than watching 10 min sections!
-
Wait! Better idea.
A CE documentary complete with narrative timeline and narrator. :D
...or is that too ambitious?
-
Release the DVD first. That's what people really want. The rest can be part of a second release with all the extras.
That way the extras are really just fun extras, and not something that's holding up the very thing that people really want to see. Then you can take your time and have fun making the extra stuff without any outside pressure to bother you.
-
What will be the price on this?
-
Price = Free! I'm just doing it for fun and want to give back to the Chrono Community.
I agree, Ramsus. I am going to release just the content first, then after a while will make a bonus disc with interviews of whoever wants to do that.
I am hoping to get some time coming up soon to work on the encoding and stuff some more, I am in the middle of my 7-day-stretch at work so hopefully I will be having 3 or so days to mess around with it after that.
-
so if its free, how will you be able to get it to the ends of the neterverse? will it just be an image youd burn to a dvd then play on your computer/dvd player?

Exactly. I plan on hosting the ISO's on my server as long as I can, without going over my limited bandwidth. I will probably start up a torrent so that if I reach my BW limit others can help out seeding.
-
Well, good luck. Thanks for your hard work too. I really hope to see this come into fruition.
-
Been a month, how's the progress??
-
Hey sorry for the lack of updates everyone. I have been really busy with work and stuff so I haven't gotten to work on the DVD's as long as I would like.
I authored, burned and watched the Disc 1 Test Disc that I made, and it turned out pretty good. I just wasn't quite happy with the way the video encoding turned out yet, so I am currently experimenting with ways to encode it to get the best quality and least amount of space comsumption at the same time.
Once that is done, I am going to reauthor the DVD again and release it. I think I am going to set up a BitTorrent tracker on my server anyways as another side-project I have, so once I have the first DVD completed I will for sure seed up a torrent of it.
I will post again soon with more updates!
-
Thanks for all the attention to detail. I'm sure this release will be amazing when it comes out.
Drinks on me if we happen to be in the same area at the time.
-
Sounds great, Ramsus! :-) Thanks for the generous comments.
As for an update, I have just acquired some DVD Authoring software (legally) that I expect will help greatly with the encoding/etc things. I have a 3-day weekend starting tomorrow, and hope to work in some progression on the first Disc during that time, and hopefully even complete it if I bust my ass. :-D
I will post as soon as I have more updates.
-
I can mirror the ISOs when you're ready to release them. I've got a crapload of bandwidth available that I mostly don't use.
Just contact me whenever you're ready, as I'll probably forget about this.
-
I sure will man, thanks for the offer!
Got another update. I have encoded another test DVD with this new software, and it is awesome as far as menus and everything goes, but it is having problems encoding the source videos, with the audio issues and what not. The biggest roadblock that will take the most time is that I am going to be re-encoding the audio and video, I am going to just keep testing the encodes out on the first video until I can find the best possible settings for DVD playback. Then I will make another test DVD using the settings I get from the earlier encodes, and once that is done, all I have to do is make the menus!
Just wanted to give another status update. :-)
-
Hey everyone! I am so sorry to everyone for keeping you all waiting. I SWEAR I am not doing it on purpose. I have been UBER busy lately, and haven't had as much time as I would have liked to devote to the DVD project.
The great news, though... I have hit a milestone tonight! I now have been able to encode a great quality feedback with audio completely intact and non-choppy! I was able to use VirtualDub to extract the WAV's, and it seems to have used the same decoder as Windows Media Player (The only audio program that would, oddly enough, play the audio correctly) so now I am currently extracting the audio, and queueing it all up to burn.
Once I have it burned, I am going to watch the entire thing. This will happen over this weekend. Once I have verified that the quality is good, all I have to do is throw in subtitles and make the menus, and we are a-go on Disc 1 of the Crimson Echoes Memorial DVD Project!
My apologies again to all who are waiting, and I want to thank you all for your patience waiting for my slow ass to work on this!
-
Hey, even one DVD is showing that you're making progress.
No need to apologize.
-
Heh thanks man, I just feel bad for keeping everyone waiting.
MORE mega awesome news though... I just encoded the full test DVD! I haven't watched the whole thing, however I will be doing that tonight. Now, here's the mega-awesome news... I popped it into my PS3 to preview it, and the audio was even better than I expected! Instead of being monoural-channel audio like the youtube vids, where some parts of the music was missing, it seems to have repaired the audio, and now it's PERFECT! No more missing parts in the audio, so all the familiar CT tunes used in the CE vids will now be perfect!
Also, I was able to retain the original smooth framerate of the original compressed vids that FW provided for me, so that was another huge plus!
As I said earlier, tonight will be spent eating pizza and watching the first 19 eps of Crimson Echoes on my PS3 to make sure that the whole file is seamless. After that it's time for menus and subbies, then finally THE FATED HOUR (hehe) of uploading and torrenting!!!
Things are definitely looking awesome for the CE Memorial DVD Project!
-
Oh, random fun fact having next-to-nothing to do with the DVD...
I got Chrono Trigger SNES running on my Cell Phone. Freaking awesome!!! :kz
-
Nice work NickyT! Can't wait to see this in action.
-
Thanks FW! It's turning out even better than I planned it to be!
Another update... Just finished the playthrough of the test dvd on my ps3 and it was absolutely perfect. The fixed audio runs completely on sync with the video and the framerate has retained from the source bids Faustwolf recorded. Now I just have to make menus, add subtitles, and grab the trailer vids from FW to put on, and disc 1 is a done deal!
FYI disc 1 will consist of eps. 1-19.
-
Here are those preview trailers. The first is the April trailer, and the second is the earlier February trailer:

I must offer huge apologies for the February trailer being not only small in terms of dimensions, but also compressed to all hell. I really didn't know what I was doing back then. :) I think it could be resized, but since I've deleted the original video samples long ago, no way to correct the compression artifacts, eugh.
-
So the dvd will be region free ? :P

Me too

Droid!
Got a droid here too! SNESoid, perhaps? 8)
And yes, I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that the DVD's are region free!
-
Also, thanks FW! I will include these on the DVD's!
-
SNES Droid, huh?
I just prefer the ZSNES emulator. Not all games need to be "on the road."
-
I feel like I"m watching an official Chrono Trigger movie! The latin is awesome! The beginning gave me a Megaman Zero vibe.
the February teaser is sooooooooo freaking awesome!
-

True, True lol. ZSNES is indeed the best emulator around, but the SNES Droid thing was more of a "I LOVE TECHNOLOGY!" thing. Heh.
And yes, the trailers are epic, and will make a great addition to the DVD's!

SNESoid and Gameboid are my favorite apps, AND the only ones I've ever had to pay for. Let's go open platform!
</droidlove>
-
Hear ya on that one! I have all of the "oid" apps, and the guy actively updates them all, and they have only gotten better since inception!
As for an update on the project, I haven't been able to devote as much time as I would like to the DVD's, however I am currently subtitling Disc 1, and it is coming along nicely and steadily. Hopefully within a week or two it will be ready for seeding!!!
-
Just wondering if there is any news on this. Its been quite some time since the last update.
-
Hey there! Sorry about the lack of updates, I have been uber busy lol. I did make a thread http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,8862.0.html to let everyone know that I am not dead and still in progress on the DVD. As far as a new update, Subtitling is almost done for the first disc, and as soon as that is done I will be making the menus (which will not take as long as subtitling did) and then I will be releasing it on my webserver/torrent tracker.
I will ask everyone to kindly assist in seeding once the torrent is up, as my server is limited to 300GB/month and I will have to stop seeding if it ever approaches that. I will worry about that when that phase comes though. :-)
Again, sorry everyone for the lack of updates, but I am indeed still working on it!

UPDATE
Hello, everyone. Again, I apologize for my lack of updates on this project. I want to thank you all for your understanding thus far, and I want you all to know I appreciate it!
I am still working on the DVD as much as I can. I just did some more subbing tonight, and Disc 1 (Everything up to the "Atash Kedah" scene) is nearing completion! At this point, I am vowing to myself that it will be done by the end of May sometime.
As I stated before, I will seed as much as I can, but will have limited bandwidth available (300 GB a month). So once I pass that point I will switch to seeding from my personal PC (which I cannot leave on 24/7 like my Linode VPS server). As such, I am asking again that once it is up, anyone who can, please help seeding with this. I know y'all will, this community rocks! Hence why we have awesomeness projects like CE!
Anyways, I wanted to again apologize for not updating in a while. As it stands right now, unless something drastic happens (armageddon, the plague, being temporally displaced to 65,000,000 B.C. and having to explain to Ayla that i am from "way after the day after tomorrow"), Disc 1 should be online sometime around the end of May. Thanks guys!
-
Just wanted to check; are you transcribing all those comments from the CE Memorial account? If so, damn...I should probably talk to you to add some commentary of my own to the DVD release, since I only did a few episodes on Youtube.
-
Hi Zeality, sorry it's been so long since I've responded. I am indeed taking all of the annotations from the Youtube videos and transcribing them onto the video. The project is going to be split up into DVD's, and I am working on Disc 1 currently, which is all the way up to the first time with King Zeal casting Atash Kedah, right before the alternate timeline videos. If you want to add some commentary that's awesome! Just let me know through a PM or my email address is nickyt@nickyt.org.
-
BTW if needed we could just make a separate subtitle track with your commentary as well. That was just a quick idea I had that I wanted to put here if that is what you were worried about.
-
Damn. I just don't think I'm ever going to have time to do it.
