You heard right. The Radical Dreamers localization is new, too, as spotted by our beloved Lucy Romana. Get ready to suddenly have to change the name of every Radical Dreamers character in the encyclopedia, lmao.
Here's a tweet comparing graphics: Link (https://twitter.com/RPGSite/status/1491558722681905164?t=sD-QdezzBnmt4J-S8Gx9Pw&s=19)

But we can't leave Chrono Trigger out of this auspicious news. I'm happy to report that eezzzz has acquired another Japanese prerelease magazine! Check it out here! (https://labx8.org/magazines:famimaga:1994:1994-08-26) We'll get it on the Compendium soon. And of course, if you can translate, there are literally tons of these scans hiding Chrono Trigger development secrets, just waiting to be rendered into English...
-
Also, as the Demiforce team took some liberties at times, it may affect documentation of events.
I noticed from the samples a difference in translation style: the official uses past tense rather than the present tense I expect from visual novels, even in the choices. Looking up the reasons visual novels are often written in present tense, maybe it's because the story is supposed to be a diary/journal.
I wonder, though, if this makes utunnels' online version a risk now.
-
Interesting. Guess I'll find out how many liberties the fan translation took, especially with the more out there scenarios.
-
Yasunori Mitsuda mentioned on his Twitter account that there will be new tracks too, something that might indicate that there will be some new scenarios!
Maybe that would include the mysterious Irish language song that Éabha McMahon/AVA mentioned she was writing the lyrics for in an interview last October -- for a "remake of a PlayStation game", in collaboration with Mitsuda and Anúna.
-
If the AVA thing ended up being for this, I'll admit, part of me would be disappointed as it'd mean it wasn't for a surprise Xenogears remake/remaster (as Mitsuda has said he was inspired by Irish music when making its soundtrack). Still, it's great then, that the Cross remaster could be getting some expansion beyond minor tweaks.
Interesting. Guess I'll find out how many liberties the fan translation took, especially with the more out there scenarios.
RIP Mick Van Jovi.

Look, I will be the "that" guy...let's be real... huge disappointment; calling this "remaster" is just lying. It is a port. An HD Port, as they used to call, before the marketing department chose to use the wrong definition to se if it sticks. This is just the same game in HD, something that can be achieved with any emulator and swapping the background for 4K upscaled ones. Search Youtube for "Chrono Cross 4k" and there will be plenty of videos from 2018-2020 showing graphics better than this. Trying to use the wrong definition will not change what it is.
If this become successful, everthing now can be a remaster just by up scaling the resolution...
Edit: I saw the tweet about the graphics comparison and i literally couldn't tell which one of the Kid models was the "remastered" one. I kept going back and forward trying to guess. This is a fact. The other image is possible to see just because the background.
We expect for any remaster at least new models, graphics, textures. The Spongebob Rehydrated game did a remaster 10 times better. Sponge. Bob. Look for it and you will see what I'm talking about.
Again, Square Enix is showing little respect for the series and barely doing the work that fans did years ago. I would not be surprised if these ps4/switch versions are just being run by an emulation software (probably, let's be real).
The only thing good about this is that people are talking about the Chrono series again, and just that...
And I expect a price of US$20 or something like this.

It's not just a simple upscaling job. Look at these screenshots. The font has been changed, and at the very least, Nobuteru Yuuki has redrawn all of the artwork for all of the characters and character portraits. The portraits in this remaster look super crisp, where in an emulator they would look terrible if you simply pumped up the resolution.

They've also made some kind of changes to model textures. There's no way Serge's face looks this clean in an emulator with just a higher resolution.
Then there's the pre-rendered backgrounds. I think they used some kind of filter on these. This looks a lot better than what you get in an emulator, where they end up blurry as hell.
I do wonder why the FMVs still look low resolution tho. Do they no longer have the source files? If they did, they should be able to simply re-render them in a higher resolution.
In the end, it's a remake, not a remaster. It's not a barebones port like you claim, but it's also not gonna look mindblowingly good.
-

SE has long said they don't have the source files of anything from those years. It's all lost.

Yeah, I mean, there must be some work done to call it that way... maybe a little change were and there... the portrait, the font.... But for the most part is minimal. So minimal that is almost indistinguishable, and lazy. If they called HD port I would be beyond happy.
-
Just in case no one realized it yet it is also going to be available on PC, it's up for preorder on STEAM. Which means the modding community will pick up from Squares slack. The do appear to have improved a bit from the learning curb of FFVIII Remastered which was just the Character Models improved and everything else completely garbage and yet that modding is almost completely revitalized to the entire game.
So there is a lot of promise from passionate fans to make it a whole lot better and for a $19.99 price tag, I'm not that upset they still do these cash grab remasters, they're doing more with each one so it's not like they're completely not listening, agree they could do so much more though.

Well I do share some of your opinions in regards to the quality of said upscale backgrounds. There was someone on the internet ( I think it was this same forum ) who had painstakingly AI Upscaled every single Chrono Cross background (literally one of those is my current PC Wallpaper) and they looked soooooooo much better than what we saw in this trailer.
There's many different AI Upscaling technologies and within those many settings to be tweaked that will alter said quality and I can safely say that they either used the worst one available or they just went with the default settings without a care of the output. I've used Topaz Gigapixel in my job and I can say that you can get some ugly results if you don't properly play with the settings.
The lack of widescreen support is also hugely disappointing.
In regards to the music I had seen a website where Square outlined all of the remaster's features and within them they specified that there's only ONE new track which is also very disappointing in my opinion.
And making claims that Nobuteru Yuuki re-drew ALL of the old artwork...I don't see it. I see that he may have drawn over some of the main characters drawings...but the rest look like they only went through the same AI Upscaling as the backgrounds did. I could be wrong about this though? Point is...why not just make new drawings of the characters if its almost unnoticeable that its a new drawing T___T
At the end of the day...I already pre-purchased it on Steam and am waiting for a play-asia physical release to pre-order. I gotta support what little effort they put into anything chrono related...even if it leaves a lot to be desired. Especially right after seeing what they're doing with Front Mission, Live a Live and the full 3d Remake of Trials of Mana :(

The new heads they plopped onto the original bodies stand out like a sore thumb. While the original texture work on serge and kid's body is detailed, with varied colors blending together to create the illusion of shadows, the new face models just look too clean to the point where it doesn't match the body textures!
-
That's true, that does look a little bit off, but whatever. It's not april yet, they could still be fixing some stuff.
-
Hell, I'll take what I can get at this point. The last official Chrono release was Chrono Trigger on PC, which itself was just a port of the mobile version.
This is better than nothing, and the first time we've received such treatment for Cross.
-
Goes without saying, but we need to datamine the living hell out of the Steam version to see if we can recover the new art assets. I supppose it's naive of me to hope that somehow, the full character art will be in the game files. It's always been sad that we have to use those ugly Ultimania scans of mine.
-
Well, at least maybe Square will see there still is interest in Chrono. Who knows what might happen. A FFVII Remake style treatment for Chrono Trigger would be pretty amazing.
-
Super excited for this!! The Radical Dreamers inclusion is the most unexpected part for me... The fact they finally acknowledge Cross is enough, but they even went through the effort of translating RD too. I'm happy to be in this timeline right now. :)
-
I'm excited to experience a new translation of Radical Dreamers, even though I like the Demiforce one a lot, it'll be interesting to compare the two after 20 years.
And while I expected something like the FF8 remaster for Chrono Cross (New PSP-like character models for the central characters) that new portrait artwork is appreciated, and CC's original graphics still hold up really well for PSX anyway.
(Edit: Actually, it does appear the battle models are new. (https://i.imgur.com/TotEu54.png) Nice!)
Also, Chrono Cross being relevant again could mean new Bring Arts figures for Serge and Kid. Square's been making figures for all their PlayStation hits (Xenogears, FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, etc) and Cross has been curiously absent!
-
New Chrono Cross figures would be cool. I only have the Kotobukiya Serge statue, which I paid more for than I care to admit... I wish I could find the Kid one somewhere. Would probably give a kidney for that.
-
If the AVA thing ended up being for this, I'll admit, part of me would be disappointed as it'd mean it wasn't for a surprise Xenogears remake/remaster (as Mitsuda has said he was inspired by Irish music when making its soundtrack). Still, it's great then, that the Cross remaster could be getting some expansion beyond minor tweaks.
Having an Irish song does admittedly feel more like a Xenogears thing, but I doubt they would do a remaster/remake of that game without getting Tetsuya Takahashi/Monolith Soft involved, and I suspect he's got his hands full working on Xenoblade Chronicles 3 anyway. As Ema pointed out, it seems Mitsuda is only making one new track (his Japanese tweet was ambiguous between singular and plural interpretations), which maybe makes it more likely that it's a song. Whether it's the AVA/Anúna thing though, who knows...
-
I'm just happy Chrono is being talked about again. We need stuff like this if we ever hope to see the series continued in any capacity. It'll also be interesting to replay again and scour over every little detail to see if they've changed anything. Even minor stuff only super-fans like us would notice.
-
Yasunori Mitsuda mentioned on his Twitter account that there will be new tracks too, something that might indicate that there will be some new scenarios!
On this note, I feel one of the updated models needs to be addressed:

Guile looks a lot more... ..."Janus"y, this time around... considering that they're already including the one canon where he actually *found* Schala properly, I wonder... ????

Certainly, CTDS being a port didn't stop them from adding new content. The problem would be the fact we've yet to be told there will be for CC. Even for CTDS we knew before release of the new content from news and stuff. Guess we might see in between now and the release date.

Sure, it still took until the game was practically out (if leaked) to find about that. Yet, when it was just about first announced:
https://kotaku.com/square-enix-confirms-chrono-trigger-ds-5021416
Their list of features already talked about a "new dungeon" (Lost Sanctum) and "wireless multiplayer battles" (Arena of the Ages). Yet there was nothing similar for CC's announcement. Nothing's guarantee yet, but I'm still pointing out that CTDS already told us of bonus content since Day 1 of news, but for CC we didn't got that.

Are they thinning out the character models or is it just me? Sometimes it looks like it to me...but my last few play throughs have been on a Vita, and I've done a lot of playing around with the screen-stretching feature to try to simulate it being widescreen. So it could just be that I'm used to a more stretched out image...
-
bear in mind, it's possible the classic mode has a feature to stretch the game screen to fit anyways. If anything, it suggests to me that "HD mode" may, surprisingly, have the same feature.
However, Guile's jaw definitely used to be shaped like that before they erm... edgelorded it

Oh, hell yes. I have always wanted a music box related to the Chrono series. Though tbh I kind of wish it were CT. $18 doesn't seem like a bad price. Maybe I'll check out those other music boxes as well.

Sorry, mum.
I don't believe in
fortune-tellin' at all.
"Mum" has become "dearie" for some reason. Does this mean there is going to be a new translation? If so, why was it not mentioned along with the other changes? Will we have the option to play with the original script, like how we can disable the graphics filters?
If the game isn't getting a remake, I want the original translation. One of the things that excited me about the remaster's announcement was that there was no mention of any changes in that regard. Now I'm worried about a repeat of the Chrono Trigger DS hackjob.

They also changed Kid's portrait for some reason, though that art looks incredible so don't mind that change.
It's weird that they're changing some of the terms in the script, I doubt there will be major differences tho. Then again, what was wrong with Chrono Trigger DS's script? It was much closer to the original japanese than Woolsey. I understand the frustration at changing some terms for nostalgic people, but I liked it.
-
I'm guessing they don't want to give the impression Kid is referring to the fortune teller as her mother, since that's what mum can mean. Other than a term for silence. Also, in context, Kid is likely talking down on the fortune teller, which "dearie" as a slang term can be used for condescension.
Also, gonna say, CTDS is hardly a hackjob.
-

There were a couple of places where the new translation added clarity. Gaspar's infamous line One of you is close to someone who needs help... Find this person...fast.
caused so much confusion over the years that I was glad to see it changed.
There was also the part where an old man gives you a hint for the Masamune fight, but it's no help because he refers to "EnergyWhirls" when he should be warning you about tornadoes.
Outside of those two occasions, I can't think of anywhere the new script was an improvement over the original. It was incredibly dry overall, and in places it was downright stilted.
But I didn't mean to derail the conversation, which should be about the Chrono Cross remaster. I'm just worried about why they wouldn't announce a retranslation when they've been upfront about other changes (and giving players the ability to revert those changes).

I suppose that's possible, although I doubt anyone would get that impression. I hope I'm just overreacting and this is the only change they've made to the script.

I mean, the game is being officially released worldwide at last. I'd think they are minding the non-US Anglo audiences who could be able to get a bit confused with the mum being used.
EDIT: Forgot it was more than just the UK...

They're making new portraits for all the characters. Kids is much more noticeable than others though because it's more different from her original than most characters.
But yeah, this is exactly why I'm excited to replay the new version. I doubt there's major changes, but I'm interested in seeing what minor things they may have changed like this. Even a minor translation change could alter the theories we've discussed so much over these years.
-
Apart from the mum/dearie thing, I haven't seen any other examples of the script diverging from the original, so it's just going to be some very minor changes here and there, and nothing resembling a complete retranslation. If the latter were the case it would have been obvious everywhere, as with the new RD translation.
-
Yeah, it's very likely that any script tweaks will be mostly small, and relegated to fixes and/or up to date to the 2020's or so...

It looks like they’re using the updated character art for the new portraits, which for most characters their portraits were already based off of that, but Kid’s was completely unique in that regard, and also that she had two portraits, one where she’s smiling and one where she’s not. I guess that latter trait is now lost, but like I said the artwork looks so good I don’t really mind.

This news has roused me from my internet slumber. And I'm pretty excited! The dialog font looks nice. I wonder how they went about the HD aspects technically, and if the required 4GB of storage is indicative of any specific method.

Long time no see. Today, the Japanese Chrono Cross official has started accepting questions about the work on Twitter. If you understand Japanese, why don't you use "#クロノクロスクエスチョン" to ask a question?
-
Would be awesome if someone could compile the answers too, much in the same way AcaciaSgt has been on top of those character bios. We're getting steady little pieces of lore...

I think this should be of highest current priority, as our Japanese counterparts may be asking legit questions, and I know for a fact there are fans over there just like us who have been waiting AGES for anything Chrono-related.

Thanks! I’ll do some digging.
It’s crazy but I just noticed Starky at the top of the sail in the newest CC promotional art… hmm…

We'll have to wait, as they replied saying they will answer questions at a later date. Right now, the vast majority of questions are asking whether there will be a physical edition or additional features not yet talked about. There are a couple of interesting ones, such as if Kid and Harle are the same person, and who the talking statue at Terra Tower is supposed to be.

Thank you!!
I know this is separate from the Japanese one, but we should still compile a list of questions to submit (or one questions that's of utmost importance), and if someone with a Twitter account would like to volunteer to tweet them, that would be amazing!
ALSO... I know maybe it may have been more prudent to make an actual thread of it's own, but CT's birthday was a few days ago as you all know, and there is new merchandise (music) and a cool tweet of the OG team I found, credit to RPGSite.
Take a look! :)

You might want to temper expectations a bit. Sometimes it's just social media interns answering stuff like this. And a lot of the questions out there are like "What's your favorite character and why?" and "Will there be physical copies of the game released?" type stuff. It doesn't appear many are asking about the type of stuff we tend to dig into here. Not many "What is Zoah's true identity" type ones.

Yeah, I doubt they'll answer any lore stuff since it would be potential spoilers, so I just asked whether there will be any bonus features like the ones included in re-releases of Chrono Trigger.
But I do have a list of questions I'd love to see answered, originally posted in this thread (https://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php?topic=13319):
- Who or what are the ghostly children? Are they the ghosts of the Chrono Trigger team (since "Lucca" addresses Kid personally) or are they walking infodumps summoned by the Entity for some inexplicable reason (since they know things those characters couldn't possibly have known while alive)?
- Who or what are the ghostly researchers in Chronopolis? Some will react to your presence and answer questions while others seem ignorant of anything that's happened since just before the Time Crash.
- What are the implications of the Darkness Beyond Time? Did Crono and his friends really cause the people of 2300 AD to be sent there by preventing the Day of Lavos? Are those people aware of their plight, suffering for eternity, or were those same souls born into the happy future instead?
(In other words, is there one Doan, blissfully ignorant of the original future, or are there two Doans, one born into the happy future and another suffering forever in the Darkness Beyond Time?)
- Did Kid merge with Schala at the end? If so, that's terrible—you freed Schala from being forcibly merged with another being, only to have the same thing happen to Kid, who was even less deserving of such a fate.
- How were the timelines merged? Did Home World's history simply overwrite Another World's? If so, that's terrible—wouldn't it doom Another World's people to the Darkness Beyond Time?
- How did Guardia fall, and what are the fates of Crono, Marle, and Lucca? This only tangentially touches the plot of Chrono Cross (via Kid's backstory), but come on, it's something Chrono Trigger fans NEED to know.
- Was the Time Crash intentional? If so, how did Belthasar possibly foresee the extremely complex sequence of events that would eventually lead to the creation of the Chrono Cross? Indeed, how did he know that the Chrono Cross could even exist, let alone that it would be the exact thing necessary to free Schala? Even with the benefit of FATE's spacetime monitoring at his disposal, this level of knowledge seems nothing short of godlike.
- If the Time Crash was not intentional, was everything that happened simply the result of extraordinary luck and Belthasar "winging it?"
- Did the Time Crash send Chronopolis back 10,000 years to 7,600 BC, or 14,400 years to 12,000 BC? This isn't crucial to the plot, but it's an annoying discrepancy.
- What's the deal with the ape skeleton on the display in Chronopolis? It directly contradicts what we're shown in Chrono Trigger—that humans in 65,000,000 BC were anatomically identical to modern ones. Ayla was a hot babe, not a monkey. And grammar issues aside, she seemed perfectly capable of understanding everything that was going on. Not only that, she had some of the deepest insights of the whole cast. So I think the whole business about the Frozen Flame speeding up human cranial development, thus making humanity the offspring of Lavos and extraneous to the planet, needs to be dropped. It would make much more sense if the Frozen Flame was the catalyst that enabled humans to use magic, and magical ability was the aberration instead of brain size.
- Was the Frozen Flame the "strange red rock" mentioned in the book in Belthasar's secret room at Enhasa? If so, did the writers plan the Frozen Flame from the very beginning, or was that passage referring to Dreamstone, and the fact that it could also be interpreted to mean the Frozen Flame was just a happy accident? (This is just a personal curiosity, it probably couldn't be covered in the game without breaking the fourth wall.)

I hear you 100% and I appreciate that, however I disagree. Granted the American twitter account will not be as active, and may not have the powers to forward certain questions to the development team (as they did state they would actually be doing), but that shouldn’t stop us from engaging with them. If no one is asking that kind of stuff, then let us be the ones that do. Whether it is answered or not, we at least MADE the attempt… we at least DID something while CC and Chrono in general are trending and back in the news cycle. An opportunity like this may not come again for a long time. If they are indeed sharing these with devs, then let us ask the devs burning questions the community have been dying to ask. It’s a golden opportunity with so much to gain and nothing to lose.
We should still keep an eye out on the Japanese CC page as well.

Does anyone know if Chrono Cross Remaster is a re-translation??
I'm aware that Radical Dreamers was originally a 'fan-translation,' so this will be the first 'official' translation, but is it at all possible we may get some slightly varied wording for some scenes in the upcoming remaster'd chrono cross? Thanks!

Oh I agree, definitely worth trying. And I personally did ask some questions. I'm just not expecting much. Maybe it's just because every time a band on social media asks for set list suggestions, most just suggest the greatest hits and the requests for deep cuts are ignored. I feel like the same will happen here. I'd truly love it if I was wrong though. I keep checking this thread in hopes that I'm wrong, honestly lol.

They havent said anything about a re-translation yet, and so far the screenshots have been identical outside of an instance where Kid refers to the fortune teller as a "dearie" instead of "mum" or something inconsequential to that effect.

Maybe this is worthy of a separate news post, but the Japanese Twitter account posted a video of the new songs!

Edit:
Now that I've had time to sit down and listen to this a few times, I have to say I like the Radical Dreamers intro and hate the rest. I doubt it's a coincidence that the one song I like is the only one credited to Yasunori Mitsuda.

Saw the post this morning, wow I genuinely thought we were getting just 1 track.

The songs are so different, but I do like them so far, especially the vocals! It almost feels like a new game with these unique tracks… thanks for sharing!!

Oh, those are nice!

Listen to the way this song ends so perfectly ♥

So THIS is the Celtic song that was talked about so long ago in the early leak information.
Gorgeous song. I love the hints to the Arni Village theme. This actually hypes me up. I was excited about the remake before, but sort of apathetic due to the lack of new content. Even if it's just new audio, this is what I needed to really get excited.
I have no idea how these songs will be implemented, though, haha... When/where/how?!
-
Heard talk that the new songs aren’t gonna be in the game and are only part of a vinyl album release?
-
There's been a huge uproar online about there not being a soundtrack-switching option, but yes, those songs aren't part of regular gameplay in any case, as stated by Mitsuda in one of the Japanese Q&A answers.
https://twitter.com/CHRONO_CROSS_RD/status/1507507628955602953/
I was transcribing the answers as they came out, so I've known for a while.

I don't understand the "uproar". Outside of a handful of the songs, my understanding was that most of the OST was more or less the same. I assumed terms like "refined" just meant it was going to be the same music, just slightly higher sound quality. Kind of like, whether a song is MP3 or FLAC quality, it's still the same song ultimately.

It's because that handful of songs was so bad, and Square wasn't clear that they would be part of a separate album. People were worried that the new versions would replace the originals in the game itself.
-
Gotta love misplaced outrage.
-
I wonder when/where the new tracks will be used then. The ending credits? Some sort of "game select" screen where you chose Chrono Cross or Radical Dreamers?

New key art released by Nobuteru Yuki, who was in charge of character design ‼️🎨✨
It is also used on the cover of Famitsu-san, which was announced today on 4/7 (Thursday) 🙌 and will be released on the same day as this work ☝️ .
There are also valuable development secret stories, so please check them out 📘✨ .
Hopefully somebody can acquire a copy of this magazine for the Compendium.

I like that two of the arrangements on the album are from Radical Dreamers. (the opening theme and credits theme, the latter of which has lyrics written by Masato Kato!)

Interesting notes from the dev team:
1) They initially intended on releasing it 3 years ago, but issues got in the way.
2) They said to pay attention to the new end credits of both CC and RD. (I wonder if that's where the new songs are?)
-
So I've been looking at a lot of gameplay and review videos of the game and so far it looks to me like the only 3D models I've noticed that were actually re-done are: Serge, Kid, Guile (for some reason?), and Lynx.
Game unlocks at midnight and I can't wait to poke and prod around but I'm mostly hoping for someone to mod it so we can replace the backgrounds with way better AI Upscaled images, 'cause some of them made me cringe in disappointment :(
I've heard a lot of talks about the Switch and PS4/5 versions having a lot of frame rate issues and I can't help but wonder if its literally reffering to the same frame rate drops back in the ps1. I can imagine...(at least in PC) that this is something that can be easily fixable by unlocking the frame rate maybe?
Also off-topic but, I've gone through several reviewers (who are self-proclaimed big time fans of the game) and all of them were mind blown by the fast forward and slow mo feature and none of them seemed to be aware this was actually a feature of the original...u just had to earn it by beating the game... @____@

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say he's lying about the human touch in those backgrounds. They look like the were just machine upscaled on bulk with the same settings for all of them and no one bothered to touch up any of the weird hiccups. And IF they were actually curated by a team of artists, I'd say they need to invest in a better team. What the fan community has done in their free time for the FF9 remaster mod shows a lot more care.
I find the talk about parts missing interesting and confusing. But then again I'm no game developer.
Also I was holding out hope that the release of this remaster meant something for the future of Chrono, maybe a remake(yeah i know). But with them saying they were meaning to do this 3 years ago I'm not sure that might the case anymore. @____@

It says they did some AI/computer upscaling as well, so maybe it varies on what was done.
As far as the lost data goes, the problem is that some companies, like Square, did a poor job of saving game's source code in the 90s. They had to do the same thing with recreating lost data with Final Fantasy 8 Remastered as well - and that was why FF released well after ports of FF7 and FF9. It's also supposedly why Sega never has ported Panzer Dragoon Saga to any other platforms - they lost the source code.
I get some of the pessimism, I kinda wish they added more new content to CC Remastered. But I'm actually kind of happy to see this story. They could have just as easily cancelled the whole project. But instead, they took 3 years to complete and release it. I'm hoping that's a sign that they care about the franchise a little bit at least...

Yuuki says that while he was careful to not drastically alter any portraits/character art, that some on the original game went in without his final approval, and he was sure to refine those ones more.

Been playing for a bit. Couple notes:
- You have Time Shifter from the start, not only New Game+… for some reason.
- There’s a toggle for no random battles and increased random battles. No random battles means you can run into enemies on the map, they’re still there, and when you touch them they do their “agressive / start battle” animation, but nothing else happens. Battles aren’t initiated. I don’t know what “boost encounters” does yet.
- In the start screen of the game you can choose old or new graphics. Old is what you know, and a more classic looking font. New means you get updated portraits, updated menu character art, a more modern font, and some texture touch ups on the character models. Serge gets a different, sharper face, in his overworld model as well as his battle model. Dunno about other characters, Poshul didn’t look too different.
- The dialogue text speed is a bit faster I feel like, and it also skips if you keep mashing A. New players will want to be careful to not miss anything.
- Music is unchanged, including Scars of Time, but the quality is higher and it sounds beautiful.
- There’s an autosave that saves whenever you enter the world map. It always takes up the first save slot, and it doesn’t seem you can disable it.
One more funny thing I noticed: I believe in the original, when you get the 200G from under Serge’s bed, it said “Serge took out his secret savings”. This time around, it says “Serge took out his not-so-secret savings”.
-

Ignorance is bliss lol
Thanks sergecross73 for those links! Those were good reads! I am looking forward to experiencing the game again, especially for the fact that Kato-san said he cleaned up the original text. I wonder if a few things were added… hmm… but anywho I am also curious what this post-credits thing is … could it be a hint at something to come? or a thanks from the staff? Probably the latter, but I’m excited regardless.
@Beach Bum
Maybe boost encounters increases the encounter rate in the field when random encounters are turned on?

Q: Finally, fans always ask so we have to - will we see a brand-new entry in the Chrono series?
A: There are no plans at the moment. I don’t know what the future holds either.
Kinda disappointed they went straight to "no plans" rather than a "let's see how the remaster sells" but I guess at least it wasn't a hard no...
-
About the "secret savings" line change...that could be a bug or mistake, as that variant originally displayed when using a different party leader.
One of the first things I checked for in videos was the name of the Arni restaurant/bar, as it turned out that the names we know (and therefore, the only mention of the chef's name) were a product of localization. For the remaster, they didn't recreate those background edits in the videos I've seen, so they've been reverted to the English text originally used in the Japanese version.
-
Been playing the game for a bit. I was getting to the conclusion that they didn't enhance any of the 3d models asides from Serge, Kid, Guile(for some reason), and Lynx. However during Karsh's fight I noticed that his hair had updated textures and his face also had a texture touch-up where you could see some of his complexion between his eyebrows. (Solt and Peppor got no treatment sadly).
Looking at it side by side the texture in the clothing seems slightly different and the polygons also look slightly different. I'm curious to see what other models have been updated. From what I saw in a video it looked to me like Niki's face was also re-done.
-
There's a lot of talk going around that the game is really just an emulated version, even has the CDROM.dat files inside the data folder...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hi, new user here.
So I preordered this game on Steam and cannot find the wallapaper they advertised. Anyone know where it is?
-
Maybe, but there seems to be other differences. Earlier in the thread there's a quote that Kid said slightly different. And I could have sworn some of the early dialogue with Una was different too...
Don't tell her I said
so, but my sister's
a bit uptight, you know?
Could you, like, break
her in a little? You know,
make her act a little
more ladylike?
Don't tell her I said

bit too quick to lash out.
Could you, like, make
her be a little nicer
to me?

Dont know about PC, on PS4 I got theme downloaded along with game.
Anyway, entered Viper Manor through Shadow Forest, so far so good.I like improved visuals, replayed game last year on PS3 and this is significant upgrade.Refined art is excelent, Nobuteru Yuuki did great work, I was surprised with Marge and Zippa art, not to mention others.
Regarding dialogue, for the first time after 13th playthroughs I discovered that Zappa had to say something about Mojo's nail. Also, granny who reads fairy tales to sick child in Termina now comments how ''Guldove is in dark age'', sure it was different in original.
Now, I preffer using ''dynamic'' camera in battle, and with that camera, game now have tendency to...show Kid's underwear (3 or 4 times so far).Kid is my favorite character by far, but I returned camera back to normal, too much fan service for me.
-

Thank you, that's exactly what I was referring to. It stood out to me since I always thought her request to "break her in a little" and "make her more ladylike" was a bit weird/awkward phrasing to ask of a teenage boy... and now it's not there anymore. Not that I'm complaining, the new wording probably makes more sense. I wonder if it's a more or less faithful translation? Or they thought it was weirdly worded.
-
Another changed line. Don't recall the exact original text, but I'm 99% sure it was slightly different.
-
Another changed line. Don't recall the exact original text, but I'm 99% sure it was slightly different.
The original line was:
Kid:
Oh...OK...
Whaddaya take me for!?
An idiot!?
So they added a sarcastic quip and "bloody" into the dialogue.
-
Was Belcha's wife's pan always triangular?
Other changes I've noticed so far:
- Minor differences in the conversation with Leena at Opassa Beach. Nothing big, just stuff like "all the time" becoming "often" and some changes to punctuation.
- The short scene where Poshul rejoins you after being kicked off the cliff by Peppor is skipped.
- Mojo no longer adds "-om" to his speech.
Edit:
Mojo does still say "-om" occasionally.
-
They also changed "struth" to "strewth"... guess that's more accurate to the australian dialect?
And something else I noticed, they changed some item names… Bronze Dagger is now Copper Dagger and Bronze Axe is now Copper Axe… seems that all Copper weapons are now just called Copper <weapon>
-
I modified Magil's indispensable room viewer from https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Utilities_(PSX).html#Room_Viewer to add a few background replacement functions for this edition.
https://github.com/stoofin/roomviewer-rde
I hope that's okay, I would never be able to figure out how to parse those files myself.
I used it to add Serge's worst nightmare

-
One thing I've been curious about is the redrawn portraits for characters who don't have full concept art. Evil Serge looks... interesting? He got a pointy tooth and his jaw grew approximately 2 inches.
-
Anybody else experiencing lots of crashes on the Steam version? Whenever I launch the game it shows a warning about "Insufficient VRAM" even though my computer more than meets the recommended requirements.
I just farmed the Viper Manor Bluffs for copper, then when I tried to return to town the game crashed. It's happened before, and always when changing areas. The autosave feature should prevent stuff like this, but instead it seems to be the thing causing it. Crashes are always annoying, but this one was particularly disheartening because of the time and copper I lost.
Does anyone know a solution, or should I just wait to see if this gets patched?
-
The casino trick no longer works :( You are now unable to pause the game while playing… can’t even use Time Shifter.
There goes an easy Rainbow Shell and Denadorite farming…
Also “Cat on a hot tin roof” is now “Catamorphosis”… ok…
-

rofl that is actually hillarious. Am Aussie; it's accurate but surreal to see that added into this game xD

Razzly's another one of the few I've spotted to also have gotten some 3d modelling touch ups. In this case they added more polys to her hair and changed up her face (for the better), along with new face and hair textures.
Also attached a Nikki comparison

There’s a weird bug going on, at least in the Switch version. When you go to the top chamber of Home Fort Dragonia and activate the pedestal with the Dragon Tear, the wall doesn’t light up when the scene about the origins of life is going on. As a result, the spark just moves along a dark, stone wall. Kinda ruins the scene a little bit.
They also fixed the Viper lvl 7 tech glitch. No more getting tons of Dragoon’s Glorys for EZ money.

Just some dat files with the game files inside it.

Looks like this port has been in the works since 2019, going by the files timestamp lol.
I believe there was a Nvidia leak or dump somewhere around 2019 (or 2020?) that leaked CC getting a remaster or update of some kind, along with another Onimusha game that has been hush hush so far.
I bought the game on PSN and my goodness those new tracks at the main menu are beautiful. Love the artwork too, and I actually find it interesting that Leena is next to Serge, and Kid was down in front. Of course you got Guile in the back too, cuz Magus
Speaking of Magus, has anyone played up to the part with Kid reading the letter from Lucca? Was that character shadow still there?

Shadow's still there...
I hope someone finds a way to rip the backgrounds from the Remaster, some of them are pretty well touched up.

Also, this shows up in the game now after Terra Tower. I can't remember if it showed up in the original game, but I seem to remember reading that the text was in the game files but never displayed. Well, now it is.
Still can't re-enter it or anything... but neat I guess.

This article says there's a new post credits scene if you beat both Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers?!?
I didn't read it because of spoilers and I'm still working through the game, but you can read the first half of the article before it goes into the clearly marked spoilers.

It’s a pretty boring ending, plain text on a black screen. So much for effort. Didn’t read it all, but it’s Magil related, probably something to make a closer connection between him and Guile.
Also figured out what pressing the right stick does btw. It doesn’t increase enemies on the map, or even in battle. Just maxes out all characters’ element level right from the start of the battle. Guess all the Dreamer’s accesories are uttery pointless now.
Edit: Pressing the right stick has even more functions. Your stamina level never depletes, and also any attack enemies make against you will miss and do zero damage. Guess they added God mode. Because Chrono Cross was such a hard game.

Out of curiosity, since I haven't played it yet--
Most screenshots have that copyright text in the bottom. That's only on screenshots...right?
-
Yeah, it is. That does not show up in-game.

I saw the post credit scene today. Looks like some Magil's thoughts.
By itself, there's nothing much about it. The secret final in DS CT tells much more.

The English Twitter account started posting answers, but the two answers currently posted are just translations of answers from the Japanese one. New information to you maybe, but not for me.

Thanks so much Vehek!
I know it’s not much but hearing from the devs is always cool.
I had thought of a question, of course way after the fact since my brain has been garbage lately… but a good question to ask the team would’ve been to directly ask Kato-san that if there was a new Chrono game that was in fact green-lit, do you have an idea ready to propose to management of what story you would want to tell? Did you write down somewhere notes or thoughts of the direction to take the events after Cross? before Trigger?
I kinda wish Famitsu would’ve asked something like this since they have more media power, instead of just ask if a new game is potentially in the works…
EDIT:
Thank you Beach Bum for confirming the shadow!
I’m glad it wasn’t taken out.

For those like myself who haven't bought the new version yet, here are the new music tracks. The arrangement of the song from Radical Dreamers brought tears to my eyes. I never thought I'd hear it sound like that. It's at 6:40

Remaster does have some rough spots...
When collecting Funguy's lvl 7 tech, Serge's portrait is accidentally used when Funguy is talking, and during the first Orlha scene I think one of the writers was typing a little too fast...
At least Serge's butt is still intact.

https://www.siliconera.com/chrono-cross-opening-cutscene-with-serge-and-the-mastermune-explained/
Confirms that Serge FMV in Termina wasn't in fact based on any certain plot point, despite most parts of the FMV being part of the plot.
-
speaking of glitches, i somehow made Serge do the moon walk in viper manor when i went into the secret room of Belthasar's lab. He was moving in one angle and no matter which direction i move to, he was stuck northwest. i think i exited out of the menu quickly or talking to the Nu fast and suddenly he walked/ran stangely. it fixed itself after leaving the room.

Thanks; I'll get your version added to the encyclopedia right under.

I checked the new script. Doesn't seem to really be any new information in it, whether Chronopolis, the Masamune, Terra Tower, etc.
It's easier to read if you do a find and replace and remove some of the commands, but the generic party text is still almost completely impossible to understand due to all the codes. Anyhow, I guess that's that for the possibility for additional canon.
-
Are you able to upload the new script? I'd still find it interesting to look through...

Check out http://chronofan.com/Black/Publications/Chrono_Cross_RDE_Localization_Files.7z
Unzip and find the "en" file. What helped me read it was opening it in Textpad (with Word Wrap), and then I did a few find/replaces on commands (especially the "wait 20, wait 40", etc.) and just replaced them with nothing, to delete them out. Same with the line break commands (the "/n" you see everywhere). The random party text is still almost impossible to read, though, due to the accent operators.

I took that and went a bit further with it, chose the generic/normal option for each sound in the accent system, did find/replace across the whole doc. Should be more readable now, though I cannot help you with the jumbled order it's in. I couldn't upload a CSV to a post here so I put it on MediaFire. Here it is if you think it could be of use: https://www.mediafire.com/file/2omx8wzcmmijbbw/en_-_en.csv/file

Got it on the scripts page now.
