I've often imagined of naming a daughter Schala or Rinoa as I really really love those names. Am I on crack? Have I finally lost it? Or am I on to something? I'm still undecided, I don't want my kids to have an average name. That is if I even have kids one day.
Anyways..share your feelings whether you would or wouldn't and what names you would consider. Or maybe even what name you would want for yourself.
-
Maybe, never thought about it.
-
I've actually thought of it (im 13 >.<) But the thing is, because im a kid i know that people can make fun of you because of your name. Rinoa seems ok, but to me Schala is no, even though it sounds cool, because Schala means something bad in my language, even though ive heard my people being called it.
SON: I dunno
DAUGHTER: RINOA!! Maybe Garnet?
What about anime characters?
-
What bad thing does Schala mean? You've made me so curious now..
Anime characters sure! Why not? I haven't thought of any though. Have you?
-
Its the equivelant of dikhead pretty much :D
I dunno, videl? tenchi? shinji? asuka? rei? sakura? ranma :P
-
Thinking about it...I kind of like the name Harle for a girl...pronounced, Har-lay (Like the french Harlez). I subconsciously pronounce her name in that form anyways.
-
I've given this some thought in the past, although I was much more gung-ho about the idea when I was a kid as opposed to today. I still might consider a name like Celes, but there aren't many left that still thrill me like they once did.
-
Its the equivelant of dikhead pretty much :D
ahahaha dude what language is this? I don't want to walk around one day and say Schala to the wrong people!
-
Aeris, damn I really need a life...
-
Aeris is a really good one. I like it.
-
I've read of a couple who's beat you two to it...
-
Aeris is a really good one. I like it.
I just hope I hope I don't name my son Sephiroth! Or else I'll have a murder on my hands :x
Kidding, I think Laguna will do.
-
Laguna's real cool as well!
and Kazuki can you elaborate a bit more? :)
-
I've read of a couple who's beat you two to it...
I know, in on of my EGM's it says it.
-
You should name you sons kefka.
-
Bengali. But yeah, aeris sounds good. or Aera, the spell in KH
-
I actually seriously read on another forum that on a list of new born babies someone had named their son Sephiroth. Don't know if it could be true or not, but man..
-
I actually seriously read on another forum that on a list of new born babies someone had named their son Sephiroth. Don't know if it could be true or not, but man..
Ohnoes! I better keep my Aeris away from them!
-
I am not sure.
I might do it or not.
-
I don't really want children and the only way I'd get to name any that would pop up would be if the girl was as big a video game nerd as I am...And I stay away from the various Otakufests, so that's probably not gonna happen any time soon...>_>
Uh, but if by some random chance it did happen...I'd go w/really absurd names...like...Lavos...
I think it'd be awesome to know a kid named Samus though. Or Locke. ^_^
-
Thinking about it...I kind of like the name Harle for a girl...pronounced, Har-lay (Like the french Harlez). I subconsciously pronounce her name in that form anyways.
Harle wouldn't be prounced like Harlez, unless you're doing that on purpose. It'd almost sound like "Har-luh" I believe. I always pronounce it "Har Lee" though.
-

Yep, when it comes to proper names, you're allowed to mispronounce them as badly as you want. ^_^
Although if anyone made my hypothetical daughter Celes' name rhyme with "please," or tried to pronounce the C like a K, I'd give them a taste of my Repentance Ray! Also known as a revolver.
-
Or I'd give a really regular name that an character has w/o telling the kid that he/she's actually named after a video game character...Like Clyde or Terra...or Ken...
-
Ive alwaysed (is that a word? no. what? how do you write it?) like the name terra. But kids would probably call her terra terror or some shit
-
You do realize that kids are stupid regardless of other kids' names, right? Unless you go overboard and name your kid "Fartatron" or "Lucious"...they should be okay...I mean, Terra is just a fancy way to spell Tara/Tarah after all...I'd actually probably go oldschool on their ass and name her Tina (heck, that gets both a FF and a DoA reference even!).
-
Dude, I am a kid, and I know that kids make fun of other kids names.
If i called my daughter a DoA name or FF name, and some of her friends look it up on Google Images for no reason, theyd probably find all this porn, if someone turned Safe Search off.
Id like to call my kid Time Devourer, the Profound Darkness or EarthWorm Jim, but my wife (if i get one) would not allow me...probably
-
Locke is a normal name. I'd never do it, I guess, because it's pre-empting the child's dignity somewhat. Not because it's a video game name, but because it just isn't quite normal. "Sephiroth" is going a little far.
-
Someone should name his son Tidus and take up the challenge of never ever pronoucing the name, like in FFX and X-2 :P
-
It's TIE-dus. I don't care what the gayass fuckers in Kingdom Hearts said.
-
Naming my kid after a VG character? Oo
Nope, never. Me and my GF have discussed that... Alexander came up. ^_^
-
my girlfriend seriously wants to name one of our kids tidus( ffx), i kid you not
-
Been there, done that...
...some names from Final Fantasy are legitimate names that have been used to name people before.
Aeris
Auron
Barret
Celes
Cid
Edgar (English)
Freya
Irvine
Locke (English)
Lulu
Rikku (Japanese)
Rinoa
Steiner (German)
Tidus (Japanese)
Vincent (English/French)
Yuna (Japanese)
Zidane (French)
If you ask me, the names are getting more normal, and less fantasy-style.
The only name from Final Fantasy that I wouldn't name a child is "Butz," the main character from Final Fantasy V.
"Wakka" is a pretty stupid name, too.
-
Do you mean Bartz from FFV? I think that was his name.
-
Do you mean Bartz from FFV? I think that was his name.
Butz = Bartz and vice-versa. Same character.
Depends if you played a direct translation of the game, or the one serialized as a part of Final Fantasy Anthology.
Also, Yoshitaka Amano, who makes the manga art and character concept art for Final Fantasy, has a painting named "Butz & Lenna Charlotte Tycoon."
Reina was originally known as Lenna, for that matter, and the remix of her theme on Final Fantasy V ~ Dear Friends album is entitled "Lenna."
Henceforth, I accept the names of these two FFV characters as being Butz and Lenna.
-
Yea, I have thought about it. Glenn easily comes to mind, and I think I could pull Nadia. Crono, Lucca, Marle, or Ayla would be a strech. Magus and Robo are big no's and I wouldn't want to. Although Prometheus or Janus would be mad old school.
-
Magus and Robo are big no's
Magil perhaps?

Oh man Butz is just asking to made fun of. Kids can be so cruel.
-

I don't think naming my kid Wizard is the best idea.
-
Zidane (French)
Zidane isn't a French name, but there's a famous French soccer player whose name is Zinedine Zidane (Zidane is an Algerian surname). I strongly suspect that it's to avoid confusion with him that, in the French translation, the FF9 main character was called "Djitane".
-
Magus and Robo are big no's

I don't think naming my kid Laguna is a goo idea either!
(It's because I live near the town of Laguna)

Right...I took 2 psuedo-years of French, so I know it's wrong...but the irrational side of me takes over and I pronounce it that way anyways.
-
Eff most of the Woosleyisms though...Unless you get two kids and name one Seymour and the other one Butz, I'd only accept Bartz...and even then...why name a kid after a stupid FF character like him anyways?
And I'd totally go w/Gil over Magil. And Jaki over Janus. I'd be cool w/either Sarah or Schala though, I guess.
If i called my daughter a DoA name or FF name, and some of her friends look it up on Google Images for no reason, theyd probably find all this porn, if someone turned Safe Search off.
That's true of, like, any girl's name...not to mention most random household objects...>_>
-
It's TIE-dus. I don't care what the gayass fuckers in Kingdom Hearts said.
What about what the voice actor said, at the concert? That's a pretty big hint.
-
If I have twin daughters (which I might - family history) I plan on naming them Aya and Eve. I think that would be freaking awesome.
(P.S. Aya and Eve are from Parasite Eve. Play that game.)

You're a dude, right? Any sisters you have, or daughters you have are more likely to have twins. The man is not the gamete bottleneck.
-
There are some names that I think would fit well, though I dunno if I'd name a possible child with them o_O
Lemme see... Cecil (but I'd use it for a girl), Cloud, Vincent, Glenn, Lucca, Guile, Norris... some more maybe
-

Names like Cecil and Vincent aren't really "video game names" per se, so much as names that have been used by video game characters. A video game name is something rare enough that you won't often see it elsewhere, and thus have a hard time associating it with anyone but the video game character in question.
-
If I have a girl I will name her Samus(I don't know if I spelled that right) not Arron
-
That is so stupid.
-
Are you the same person that said Lost was stupid?
-
There is another game name (actually a famous french drama, that I forgot the name, in which the vagrant story character's name, I believe, was based) that I find cool: Rozencrantz
Poor boy whose nickname would be Rozie o.o
-

Rosencrantz is actually a character from a Shakespeare drama. It was spellt Rosencrantz and not Rozencrantz like in Vagrant Story (might be something like the only translation typo/mistake in the whole game though!). Maybe it means something in German too, I don't know.
-
Got another name for a daughter. Beatrix!
-
If have a name for a boy Nightmare ( from the Soul Caliber games not from here).
-
Oh, I envy not that child in which you name after a particularly horrifying dream...
-
Janus sounds like a good middle name but as a first name would seem kinda odd.
-
I have a name for a boy Nightmare ( from the Soul Caliber games not from here).
Or did you steal it from me?
-

I don't see why he would...in my opinion, it would be better to name your child after a knight with a gigantic, evil sword than a random message board denizen :? .
In my opinion, Nightmare is a terrible name for the child. Good luck on getting the Mrs. to agree on a name like THAT.
-
It would be easier to name your kid Beatrix then Nightmare.
-

You are just mad that I thought of it first.

Thought what up first? In case you didn't know, my name IS Nightmare975.
OWNED

My girlfriend and I have discussed using the name Jullinar (not videogame, but it's the main character of my book... Jullinar is an angel)... And as far as videogame names, I think I could pull off Lucca. It's just an alternate form of Luka, which I believe is a fairly normal name anyway.
I should get my friend Kether in on this... She has 5 kids, 2 of which are named Sairi (Kairi?) and Aidan (suspiciously similar to Aden, the main continent in Lineage 2)... And her whole family has weird names. Course, she doesn't know JACK about videogames, LOL! She just happened to pick those names. She'd probably take a lot of inspiration from the Final Fantasy names though!
I can see naming a daughter Celes... Hmm... And yeah, it WOULD be cool to know someone named Samus. :D
I canNOT see naming a girl Tifa though... #1, it's just a little too far. #2, what if there are still FF7 fanboys when my daughter gets older? (Sounds crazy, but look how old CT is and here we are!) Because of the name Tifa, she'd get made fun of by boys in school if her breasts don't turn out humongous...
-
The entire FF7 cast is the load that should have been swallowed.
And I'd say I'd name my kid Serge. Tis an awesome name. I suppose Kid could also be used, since there are many 'Guys' out there.
-
It's TIE-dus. I don't care what the gayass fuckers in Kingdom Hearts said.
What about what the voice actor said, at the concert? That's a pretty big hint.
No. Still gay.
I could see Tifa, Barret, or Vincent.
And nobody's mad because they didn't think of Nightmare first. It's retarded. Even Siegfried, his real name, wouldn't work that well.
-
Tifa sounds...too slutty
-
The name itself does not have any sexual connotations...it's just that you associate a woman with extremely oversized figures in tight clothing with it.
Edit: Whoa, Jake lives  !
-

No. Still gay.
Actually, even before that, in the preview trailer for FFX (I think this trailer was on the CD for the FF:TSW soundtrack), it was still pronounced TEE-dus even then.
Face it Hadriel, every time Square says it, it's consistent, and every time they say it it's TEE-dus.
And yes, Jake lives. ;)
-
My girlfriend and I have discussed using the name Jullinar (not videogame, but it's the main character of my book... Jullinar is an angel)...
I think Jullinar is also a character in Stargate SG-1.
-
That's Jolanar or something like that. Jullinar is named for a girl I knew in junior high. =P
-
Magus and Robo are big no's
Magil perhaps?
I don't think naming my kid Wizard is the best idea.
I don't think naming my kid Laguna is a goo idea either!
(It's because I live near the town of Laguna)
At least that would make some sense.
-
If I had a french wife, I'd call my Daughter Har-Lay for Harle :P That's like an UBER name.
-
Turns out I already did. In my defense though, at the time we picked the name for our daughter, the video game character that shares her name did not exist yet.
So what is the name? Well, I give you a few hints:
The character is from a Square game.
My wife and I first picked the name that we would eventually give our daughter back in 2000.
You’ve seen her countless times. Sure her name changes, her attire varies, and her personality is never the same twice. But you’ve played CT even once, you’ve seen her before.
Lets see who can guess it. If you get it right you win a big fat No Prize. Yes, the No Prize! One size fits all! Thousand of uses! Brought to you by the makers of Diddly-Squat.
-
I don't remember Marvel's Bull Pin or Stan Lee making anything called a "Diddly-Squat"...>_>
-

Kid/Schala? Lol.
Galatia sounds like a cool name to call a girl. Archimonde for a boy XD
-
I was thinking of naming my daughter (if i have one) Claire, not after claire from resident evil, or Gwendolyn, after Gwen Stacy from Spider-Man, if that counts.
-

The video game character that shares her name didn't exist yet, and yet if we've played CT even once we've seen her before. But all the other times we may supposedly have seen her, she's different. How curious! So...it's probably one of the more generic characters. You didn't name her Mom by any chance, did you? =P
-
What about Lara? That's the name of Lucca's mother, and I don't think Tomb Raider came out untill 2000, can't remember...
-
What about Random Citizen #26 =P What about Selphie, or Alieshe?
-
I could see Tifa, Barret, or Vincent.
As was said before, Tifa sounds too slutty.
Barret is marginal. No bad connotations, but just doesn't sound right IMO.
I could kind of see a kid I have named Vincent. Not because of the character, but just because it's a "normal" name, but still uncommon. Though the fact that my barber is named that kind of discourages it. :P
IMO there aren't many "decent" names in Square games, but they DO exist. For example, Vincent (already said), Nadia (eastern European, but still quite valid), Terra (again, a normal name), Edward, Edgar (not many of them around, but they ARE around), Cecil (borderline, as it's definitely an old-fashioned name, but is still in use), Rosa (as "Rose" though), Glenn (with one "n" though), Zack (shortened Zachary, which my cousin is named), and probably many others which I have forgotten.
-
I'd like to name a boy Felix, but not for any "gaming" reasons; I just like the name (and it roots as luck in greek or latin...forget which).
-
Nope, sorry! All the above guesses were wrong. Perhaps some clarification of my hints are in order:
Remember when I said that when we picked this name, the game in question - a Square game at that - wasn't out yet? We picked he name in 2000, even if we didn't have the kid until two months ago. This pretty much eliminates Final Fantasy’s I-IX, and both Chrono games.
When I said you've seen her countless times before, what I should have said was you've seen countless people that look just like her before. Especially if you've played the PS1 re-release of CT. Even more over if you've seen a single episode of Dragonball Z. Now, if that wasn't a big, fat hint, I don't know what is.
-
I was thinking about it a while back sure id name my kid after a video game/show charector. IF i ever have a girl im going to name her Celes or Terra from ff6 or Delenn from babylon 5. Boy well Locke or crono wouldent be out of the question.
-
My friends name is Felix, and we call him Treelix, coz he's lanky. Lame, i know

Chi chi? Pan? Leene? Lol.... Bulma?
-
Videl? Prob Leene, as Zaper said. Just tell us, I am dying of curiosity.
-
You guys are being way to literal. Didn't I say the character was from a video game? A Square game at that, which knocks out every last DBZ/GT game ever created? She merely looks like someone you would expect to find in an episode of DBZ. Akira Toriyama worked on more than DBZ and Chrono Trigger you know...
-

-
Josh's Silvercry Impression: I am thinking of a name. It might have something to do with a person who looks like somebody you may have seen in a video game once, possibly. Come on, how many hints do you need? I'm practically giving this away!

Well, lets see, what came out in 2000?
My guess, the name is from Vargrent Story, but that came out earlier than that. Damn, I hate not knowing :x
-
Is it from: Vagrant Story, SaGa Frontier, Front Mission, Legend of Mana, Parasite Eve or XenoGears/Saga?
-
You said she appeared twice in Chrono Trigger and CC... Are you talking about Lucca, or Ayla? Akira Toriyama sure made them two look like Bulma. Even Marle.
So is it Marle, Ayla, Lucca?
-

Ding, ding, ding! Radical Dreamer is the only one who has gotten even remotely warm: The character is from the Dragon Warrior series ( or more corretly, Dragon Quest). She also happens to be a dead ringer for Videl, aside from different hair color and about three cup-sizes larger. I like Akira's work and everything, by why is it almost everyone he draws looks like either Goku, Chi-chi, Bulma, Number 18, or Mr. Satan?

Come now, Lord J. That was jest was totally beneath you. Having an off day?
-
Maribel or Aira? Is it PC or NPC?
-
Come now, Lord J. That was jest was totally beneath you. Having an off day?
Nonsense. All is in good fun. I'm sorry you took it the wrong way.
-
She's in Dragon Warrior Seven. Damn, I never played the game!
-
Some of the names are pretty out there...like Sephiroth.
But, seriously-if you think the name is nice, name the kid that.
After all, remember the names of Frank Zappa's progeny-Dweezil,Ahmet,Moon Unit, and Diva. (BEST NAMES EVER.)
Or, even worse...Cher's daugther. (Chastity.)
-
Come now, Lord J. That was jest was totally beneath you. Having an off day?
Nonsense. All is in good fun. I'm sorry you took it the wrong way.
Likewise. Sorry if it sounded like I was upset or something. I made that post just before going into my weekend Army Drill, and that always puts me in a bad mood.
She's in Dragon Warrior Seven. Damn, I never played the game!
So very close, but no. Incidentally, I've been meaning to get that game myself. From what I've read, it’s the 'screw graphics in favor of game play depth' game I've always longed for. But I still have ton of other games to finish first, and I just started the fan-translation of Dragon Quest V, which I've been dying to play for years now. Ever since I finished Dragon Warrior IV, in fact.
Maribel or Aira? Is it PC or NPC?
She's a PC. But neither of those.
-
If I'm close, then, Dragon Warrior VI!
-
If I'm close, then, Dragon Warrior VI!
You're headed in the wrong direction.
-
Darn, then I'm out of ideas.
-
Is it from Blue Dragon? Kluke?
-
He already said it was from a Dragon Warrior game.
-
Well, seeing as how he said it wasnt dragon warrior 7

and that the name was made in 2000 before the game of the same name was made, that only leaves number 8, which i dont know the names of, which i doubt the names have been released. That, or a spinoff game...

Names have been released. At the very least, since this last E3.
-
Then it is definetely DQ8
-
It is planned to be out the 22nd of November.
-
Then lemme guess Silvercry...Jessica?
-
When I first played Secret of Mana, I made up a name for the Girl: Quensy. Something about it still sticks in my mind, and I may call my daughter that...*shrug*
-
Then lemme guess Silvercry...Jessica?
Jessica! I second that.
-
Then lemme guess Silvercry...Jessica?
Jessica! I second that.
Whens Silvercry coming back? We have to keep quoting this till he finds out im right...or possibly right
-
Then lemme guess Silvercry...Jessica?
Jessica! I second that.
You are correct, sir! Wow, took ya'll like, what, 9 pages? But that is Chibi-Silvercry's real name.
By the way, Dragon Quest VIII looks pretty good... though the hero going 'super sayin' in the trailer was a bit much...
-
See, I am the pwnz0r r0x0r! We really thought you would have a crazy name, seeing as how people were going you cant count those names, like Vincent from ff7. But my powers of elimination and problem solving are the awesome!
