Wha, did you think it was dead? As of this morning, the latest build of the ROM hack interquel between CT and CC, Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes, has been released for beta testing, with the game ~95% complete.

In the coming weeks, the team will put the finishing touches on the game while I prepare the site for release. More announcements will follow! Now for some goodies.

Hopefully I'll sit down and finish Prophet's Guile by the time this is finished.
-
Congratulations.
Although I won't try to play a RPG for a while, I will try it ASAP if I have some spare time.
I believe so many years' effort must have produced a master piece.
-
Can't wait to give it a try. Keep up the good work guys. Also I definitely want in on the next project if you guys take on another.
-
Kind of thing we're beta testing for:

-
Just what I need when I'm sneaking onto the Compendium when grounded. I love how Ayla is scooting across the floor on her butt like a dog. Or my cat Rosie.
Will download at some point. Must get flashdrive...
-
Dog? Cat? LOL
No, I think it looks like she's sitting in meditation.
-
This is exciting...! I can't wait to see it finished!
-
This is one hell of a Valentine's Day. :D
-
Yes! I'll definitely help out! Beta Testing is what I can do! I can't wait!
-
Can't wait to see how you guys did with this.
-
So its not an open beta? Well looking forward to it regardless!
CT:DS, CT:CE, AE:HU, CC:DBT too many good acronyms to follow @_@
-
Always good to see one of the Compendium's projects getting done.

What's wrong with that? Ayla got high off some hardcore dreamstone what's the big deal?
I wish i was a beta-tester WHYYY!
-
is it too late to join the beta testing for this?
-
We had beta testers scoped out for a long time, now. They're either proficient ROM hackers, people whose opinions we value on the dialogue, story, flow of the game, etc. or both.

So I'll be checking my PM box often xD.
-
Ohh... I wanted to test it. I could say stuff about the story and dialogue and make sure there's, like, no grammatical errors... but... oh, well.
I'd love to see more pictures.
-
Congratulations to the Beta testers and the Crimson Echoes Team :)
Your dream is nearly complete and i think i speak for everyone when i say "we cant wait to play"
-
Hahaha... you guys realize that Beta Testing isn't that much fun, right? You have to do all kinds of exploration and keep a really detailed log. It takes the fun out of the game, in my opinion. That's why I opted out of testing out Chrono Trigger+... It's just a lot of work - a lot of necessary work, no doubt - that I personally don't want to do. In the case of video games... I'd just rather enjoy the bug/glitch free final version.
Good luck to you guys! I can't wait to play this game! The screenies look awesome (especially the Ice-Age overworld map - which sports a new bridge sprite, I see).
-
Boo's right. To beta test, you need to talk to every NPC, try to do things you aren't supposed to, and note absolutely everything you find wrong while also making suggestions for improvements. It's bad just to fast-forward in ZSNES or blow through the game without speaking to NPCs.
-
Are you guys testing both ZSNES and snes9x, or just one?
-
I'm definitely testing Snes9x if I have time to actually beta test, but only to see if there are any problems. If some show-stopping bug does come up in Snes9x, it's not getting fixed.
-
Looking at that description of beta testing, it sounds less fun than rereading something you threw together in November when school just didn't matter. Sounds time consuming and not for those weak of heart, mind, eyes, or computer. Considering my brain hurts and I have been known to obsess over all these little things, my ROM computer is slow as all hell, and I have the attention span of a gnat, I don't think I can do this.
Oh, well. Still can't wait for the real thing!
-
I guess I'll just sign up to beta test the next thing that needs testing, then. Too bad I missed out on this one. I know you weren't speaking to just me, but I, for one, DO know what beta testing portends for it's testers and enjoy the work even though it is monotonous, because I would rather have a game without mistakes as an end result than to have something like the retranslation or the actual releases of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI into America with mistakes in them. both of them are well-loved by me and both of them have mistakes that weren't caught before being released, and they were done by professionals. Though, they had less mistakes left in than the retranslation which you also had beta tested by people who 'you value the opinion of.'
I look forward to being of assistance as a beta tester in any future projects you might have, if you'll have me. if you won't I'll probably bitch to myself about it for a couple hours and then get over it, lol. I just want to help out with stuff that I CAN do, because I can't do any of the programming stuff you guys can. I'll still play this in open beta and compile a list of things I find, if you have an open beta before releasing it completely, but I understand if it's too late to get in on it at this point.
-
There will be a time before release when the ROM is basically done and a few people will need to play through exhaustively to make sure none of the rooms randomly corrupted.
If, during that period (which is probably going to be April) you have the ability to play the entire game through in several hours over maximum 2-3 days, then maybe it's possible.
-
I just registered to wish my congratulations for the team. I've been following the progress of your work for quite sometime on here and in the Romhacking.net community. Just a quick question; do you plan on making this playable on a real SNES? I've been itching to run through Crimson Echoes on my Game Doctor
-
We're going to have some custom music inserted (like stuff from Radical Dreamers and Front Mission), and if Prophet's Guile is any indication, the real SNES absolutely hates it. Someone who tried it out found that all the inserted songs sounded glitched and horrible. The SNES is also prone, I think, to the same issues that older emulators and SNES9x run into with expanded CT ROMs; they all inevitably lead to a black screen at some point. The CT Retranslation hits this at the Blackbird; Prophet's Guile hits it on your way to the Ocean Palace.
-
Well, almost all the inserted songs. The three I did still sounded fine. JCE3000GT's Epitaph import and Kajar music were also fine.
-
Ah, I'll be missing out on new music...that kind of sucks...V_V
-
:(
Sorry....I really want it to be the last thing incase something goes horribly wrong with inserting music that we can't predict...
--JP
-
Ok when this is done... Are you guys going to post links to the most trusted CT Rom, Your rom hack, and the most trusted of each emulator that is being used?
-
The emulator is no mystery. Only the latest version of ZSNES will be able to handle it. SNES9x, past versions of ZSNES, etc. can't deal with expanded CT ROMs.
We won't link to the ROM, since that's asking for trouble.
-
I've heard that ZSNES plans to be more accurate to the SNES in the future. So, better be careful or we may have to recommend older versions (as in what we have now) in the future.
-
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D ear to ear
great job everyone!
-
I mean.....we should try it on snes9x.....you never know maybe it'll work and atleast if we find where it doesn't work that if someone says "it crashes at point X" it'll jump out at us as an Snes9X problem.
--JP
-
I'll be trying it out on my wii, Snes9xGX 008, and then i'll desperately try to pack it into a virtual console wad, hope it works...
-
is anyone testing this on real hardware, and if that isn't possible, anyone testing on bsnes?
-
Not that I know of.
-
I can test it on the xbox snes emulators.
-
I guess after the official release I'll let you know if anything comes up on bsnes.
-
Whoa... amazing. I thought I'd never see CT:CE get near completion. Badass!
Now if only Chrono Crisis could be as fortunate...
-
Wow. 'grats to the CE team!
-
Congrats on the time you put into this fan game!! Looks amazing!!
Though I am curious, could SE terminate this somehow and for any reason?
(i.e.) Chrono Ressurection ... ?
-
Perhaps not until after release.
-
The fact that it's a mod of an existing game helps. Though CE boasts professional level quality.
-
Moreover, Prophet's Guile was released one year ago and SE hasn't stopped it.
-
Seems like most of the "emulators this probably won't work on" angles are covered, but I'll be testing it out on PSP. Just an FYI.
-
is there a release date set in stone yet? I keep visiting CCompendium daily, just waiting for the epic moment when CT:CE is released. I'm.... so.. proud of you guys...
-

You can check for updates there.
-
You know what I want to see? I want to see SE's lame ad campaign for CTDS (Good Morning, Crono!) to show up, then like the text would melt, turn red & become the CE logo or something...
-
Heh, the opening lines of the CE teaser trailer were meant to be a spoof on the Square Enix ad for CT:DS, actually. Only the CE teaser ups the ante by showing actual text that appears in-game.
-

It could totally be all blood-like with over the top heavy screaming music accompanied by a huge flashing "COMPENDIUM IS FUCKING METAL"
-
Oh my god I just watched the CE trailer and I think I may have actually cried, (in a good way though!)
I sooooooooo cant wait!
-
I just watched it too ...wow
I think i already know more than i should xD
-
I wish you guys had waited to unveil the website until the actual release date. That way there would be no way a C&D could happen... It could've totally been off the radar and suddenly... BAM! IT IS HERE.
-
We were pretty good than most about that, I guess. Most fan project leaders seem to thrive on attention, no matter if their news updates are relevant or not, or actually backed by hard work instead of lofty promises. But CE was all about silently finishing the game and storing up energy for a MASSIVE DAMAGE release. That's sort of how it should be done, because the entire community loses credibility when people are like "Look look at my project; I haven't coded one fucking thing, but it's going to RULE because I'm going to have playable Turnip in CT" and attract fans, only to never deliver.
-
I like it, the site is simple clean and professional. Crimson Echo is under wraps until just before release then news should spread like wildfire, all building up to its finial release.
-
But what will happen when Squenix gets wind of it?
I do very much so enjoy the trailer site. It's very nice. Not a whole lot of the buttons one would expect. I love the end of it.
Hurrah, Crimson Echoes team! Let's hope they didn't release where the hell they live to the public, shall we?
-
CE is really going to set the bar for fan projects in so many respects. It's probably the most massive game modification ever accomplished as far as I'm aware, and Square Enix's reaction to it is going to define viral advertising methods for all fan projects from here on out.
Even though the teaser site is out, the CE team has been extremely conservative about viral advertising up to this point. You don't see any recent mention of it on GameFAQs or other gaming communities, so I think the project is going to be very safe until release. In May, Square Enix will be officially ninja'd.
Ramsus did the teaser site btw. I'm not sure whether he did the artwork though; I should probably make that my desktop background for awhile...
-
The logo is by Chrono '99 (I believe), and the Death Peak background is by Luminaire. I simply painted in Crono's figure and the frozen flame and threw the logo on top.
-
Wow!
Looks like I registered at a good time, then.
Awesome. :)

@ all those who wish to beta test CE on consoles rather than computers:
Let the beta testing on the computer get done before anything else. Reporting bugs or anything of the sort whilst beta testing on an xbox or whatever could potentially delay progress. Besides, emulators used on consoles or handheld devices are glitchy either way so you could end up reporting a glitch that was caused by the emulator itself.
Wait until the final release to start bitchin about how the game freezes at point X on your PSP.

Oh of course. I wasn't talking about beta testing. Just a general compatibility check with different configurations of the SNES emulators on the PSP, to see if its playable (and if not, how far before any problems).
-
So hows the bugs coming, good I hope? Will we see the old April fools joke, something about a C&D letter, I think I would cry.... no, i know I would cry.... can't wait for this to be released. How long has it been since you've first started this project? like 2 years or something right? any who hope things are going smoothly.
Jomomma
-
Technically started November 2004.
Bugs are coming along fine, but the real time-consuming stuff is adding some final polish.
Development's hampered a bit because I'm in a ruthlessly difficult month of grad school.
-
I hope I can wait before tearing out my eyeballs.
-
I'm just now grabbing the demo and giving it a whirl. I'm very early in, but loving what I see from the dialogue -- which, I'll be blunt, I'm the kind of person that this is what matters most.
I did wish to inquire about one formatting alteration, though. Is there a reason the 'h' on 'house' is no longer capitalized in regard to Crono's and Lucca's locations? Or was it always like this for the SNES version? It's been a very long time since I played it on anything aside from the DS, so maybe my brain's foggy and you decided to uphold that. Or was it just a stylistic preference?
These are the sorts of things that grab me well before gameplay, so yeah.
-
Always like that.
-
Gotcha. Good times.
Well I got up to Chapter 2, but I'm going to call it quits for tonight. Been up for a couple of hours now running around in the demo. Great fun, though. I'll have a more thorough analysis once I'm done. Also, I'm assuming this is no longer an issue, but if by chance you need someone to spot grammatical issues within the demo, let me know. Again, I can't imagine it'd matter anymore, but still.
-
Dude, the release is sooo soon... I can't wait.
-
Yeah, I just read in another topic that the demo portion was basically some three years ago, so a.) obviously they don't need help polishing; b.) I think I'm going to stop playing and just wait until the official release later this month!
-
JZ, have you seen the trailer yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMrbvCGyCKM&feature=channel_page
And that's just one of several...
-
Flippin' brilliant. Thanks for the link. I cannot wait.
