Title: Call for playtesters!
Post by: Fauntleroy on November 14, 2018, 11:13:03 pm
Finally time for playtesting of my "Schala Edition" hack!

The headline, for anyone who doesn't know, is this hack changes events so Schala is rescued from the Ocean Palace. But there's a lot more to it than that.

Right now I've got three signed up (chrono.source, DK_Donutlicious, Pictou). If you want to join, please reply to this message by Friday night.

I don't want any more than 10 testers, and it's just first-come, first-served.

What I ask is that you play through one new game and preferably a New Game+ as well. And just... explore. Talk to everybody. Read signs. Try all the Techs. Go everywhere you can go. Steal from enemies. Do any side-events you know of. And basically try to break what I've made.

Specifically, I'm looking for any bugs or typos. I'll start a thread for reports this weekend, after I send the patch to the playtest group.

What I'm not looking for is a co-author. The decisions on what to do with this project are already made, so if you've got a great idea for something, go make a hack! The more the merrier!

Thanks!

I can partially playtest when I have the time but I don't think I'd be able to commit to every single detail unfortunately due to my work hours for the next number of weeks. I can probably go through dialogues, techs like normal if that would be sufficient.

I am able to play it through on SNES9X since my computer is main source for any kind of emulation.

I have the next week off. I'd love to spend some of that time playing Chrono Trigger. Count me in.

I can playtest as long as it runs successfully on my PSP via SNES emulator (I won't have time to sit in front of my actual PC to play with work, my kids, and the upcoming holidays, but I can take it on the go very easily).

I should be able to push out a playthrough in a few weeks, and will make sure to take in-depth notes.

EDIT: If you have a save ready that I can NG+ with, I can get it done even faster. :)

I wish I could be a part of this. I sooo wish I could be a part of this.

Unfortunately, unless you have a version that's compatible with tablet, that's not gonna happen.

All I can do is wish you good luck. ;_;

PS: Will there be Chrono Cross roasting? :P

That is actually one thing that may hinder my testing... is I need it to run on my android SNES emulator. Here's hoping!

The Snes9x for Android can handle any Chrono Trigger hack, it can even play the MSU-1 music.

So I can't find my PSP, but I did start playing it on the PC... I am five minutes in...

1000AD

1. I love that all NPCs now have names. Sam, Trish, Violet, Ziggy, etc. I love it.

2. After noticing this, I went back to talk to Crono's name to see what you named her. Mom works perfect. However, she says "You two have fun but be back before dinner." There's no one else in my party, and I know that she just reminded me about meeting up with Lucca (so I assume that's who she is referencing), but the line threw me for a loop. Just a thought.

3.) None of the NPCs on Zenan Bridge have names. Not that it's a big deal, since they're randomized and repeating, but I did want to make sure you know.

4.) The Porre innkeeper doesn't have a name. Nevermind. None of the Porreans have names. Is this because Crono knows everyone in Truce but not in Porre? If so, that would make sense why the NPCs in 3 don't have names, haha...

5.) Nor does the Porre shopkeeper. He also has no dialogue; it opens straight up to the buy/sell menu. This may have been how it was in vanilla CT, it's been a long time since I've played it on SNES, but I did want to call it out just in case.

6.) I found the Frog Kingdom in Porre and couldn't help but be excited. New content already this early in the game! I hope there's more to this... Gwah ha haaa!

7.) I like that you referred to Lucca as Lucca Ashtear in the telepod scene and elsewhere. Nice continuity. Smiley face.

600AD

1.) I am loving that everyone now speaks in an olde-fashioned accent. I haven't met Frog yet, but this matches perfectly, so I assume you left his accent in.

2.) I also like that you referred to Banta the bellmaker as Ashtear Smithy.

xcalibur, you've been added. Thank you! Check your inbox.

Yes, all the NPCs in 1000 AD Truce have names because, presumably, Crono would know them all. But this is only true of that one town.

A lot of the basic shopkeepers have no dialogue. None of these are changed from the vanilla game.

There are a billion references sprinkled throughout. My general advice with this hack is: if a townsperson talks about a party member or is related to them in some way, definitely take that party member to meet that townsperson. You will almost always get some exchange between them, or a comment in reply from your party member. Adding all of these little things was the biggest delight for me of the project. Some of the later references play into the Chrono series lore a bit more.

Can I still take part in this? It sounds so exciting!
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!

The frog kingdom has me excited. And it's pretty neat that all of 600 AD's citizens speak with Frog's old English.

Side note, I've actually never played the SNES version of Chrono Trigger, only the DS version. Though it seems Potions are still Potions instead of Tonics. Yet Reviver replaces both Athenian Water and Revive. Just curious if you chose one translation over another.

Most citizens refer to Magus as "The Magus", though I bet that's intentional.

Aaaand I was killed by a Poly because I forgot to heal.  :o
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!

XAIXER, check your inbox!

Kodokami: I really didn't choose one translation over another. I mean, the base here is the original 1995 Woolsey translation because that, to me, will always be definitive, despite its issues. But with things like item names? I just went with what I liked, to be honest. "Revive" is a verb so I thought the item name should be a noun (Reviver).

As for Potion/Tonic, I just plain prefer the Potion/Hi-Potion/X-Potion naming convention.

In all seriousness, I tried this as well and couldn't replicate it.

Typo #1: Frog Kingdom 1000 AD start of game.
'Bad blood left over from 400 years ago, they says.'
   - Should not be 'says'.

Typo #2: Lucca appearing in 600 AD after Marle disappears.
'I'll bet they mistook your
friend  for her ancestory...'
   - There's two spaces after friend

Typo #3: Dorn when you first talk to him manually.
'We're all straving up here.'
   - Should be 'starving'

Unsure?: When Johnny is introduced.
It loads '...the MAN!'
'Thanks for the intro BABE!'
Then it loads '...the MAN!' again after. Is this supposed to happen?

Tile Solidity:
65,000,000 BC
   Mabambo Tribe
The tower on the far left has a slight solidity issue where if you walk from the bottom up towards the top, you can sort of walk into the tower.

1000 AD after you've obtained the charged pendant
Head to the Mayor's Manor in Poore, go up the stairs and open either chest
It'll display a very broken text string but you'll still obtain the White Vest/Black Vest like normal.

Tailspin - 'Proximity-based Lightning damage'
Is this accurate? I'm honestly not sure if this was what it was in the original or not.

12,000 BC once you're able to fly with the Epoch has some broken graphics on the mini map when you press 'select'
   - Seems to happen once the Black Omen appears

The Forest Primeval seems like the two WildHeckran's together causes some graphical glitching with them.
   - This may be a possible VRAM glitch so it's probable that they may not be compatible with both on screen.
   - Zakra has some graphical issues as well. Not entirely sure what's going on.

This is what I got so far. I'm near the end of the game at this point. Have to do all the side-quests first and then I'm off to Lavos.
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!
Post by: DK_Donutlicious on November 19, 2018, 05:33:03 am
Justin3009 beat me to it with those reports on the Forest Primeval!

North Cape exit to world map needs correcting, currently exits to the old north cape coordinates  Also maybe have the cape be more obvious as a location on the world map? I found it quickly enough but still feels like it could be clearer.

Am I supposed to be able to do something with the Frog King? I can't tell if I'm missing something or need to move on.

Only other thing of note is Frog's ultimate technique. For 16 MP, it's damage output is rather lackluster. For comparison, Robo with Uzzi Fist is dealing around 1600 while Frog with Nirvana X is dealing around 1000, and Uzzi Fist is half the cost. I don't know if you were mostly done with editing that tech but you may want to consider messing with it some more. (Also is it going to get a more unique animation? Obviously it works as is, but a copy of Leap Slash was kind of a bummer :/)

Anyway, I am really enjoying this so far! Excellent job!

I was using the most up to date SNES9X when testing.
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!
Post by: Mauron on November 19, 2018, 01:33:56 pm
For that Zakra thing, try changing the enemy index. Some sprites get wonky in certain slots.
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!
Post by: DK_Donutlicious on November 19, 2018, 03:18:02 pm
I also had the Wild Heckran graphic glitch, it's the same kind of thing that Zakra had, where sometimes they flicker when doing certain animations during the battle.

So perhaps apply Mauron's Zakra suggestion to the Heckrans as well? The original Heckran uses index 3, but it could also just be getting wonky because you don't normally fight two Heckrans at once.

As for the Frog King, it was fun seeing him/kicking his butt, but it made me feel like there was something I could do with him to make the future frog kingdom like humans more. It also feels weird being able to repeatedly beat him up. Maybe make it a one time fight if possible? I know you weren't looking for feedback other than just bugs/difficulty, but this was something where I spent 30 minutes trying to catch him and do different things because I really thought fighting him had some connection with fostering happy relations for 1000 AD Frog Kingdom, so other people who later play your hack may end up trying the same thing and getting frustrated.

Oh and something from early on that I almost forgot about. The TP needed for Chrono/Lucca/Marle's second techs seems too high. I actually never properly unlocked Wind Slash nor Hypno Wave (Provoke was unlocked during my run through the factory); my party gained them when they got magic. Was this intentional? If not, I would recommend lowering the needed TP to learn Wind Slash/Provoke/Hypno Wave.
Title: Re: Call for playtesters!
Post by: Fauntleroy on November 19, 2018, 03:49:57 pm
Yeah, I'm going to do some additional testing with Zakra and the Wild Heckrans. I was able to see the Wild Heckrans glitch when I fought them on a file with lower-leveled characters, where the fight took much longer. I think Mauron's right and it's a matter of indexes. I've already found and corrected similar issues with other boss fights.

Relations between the Frog Kingdom and the humans will get better over the course of the game. The first improvement comes with beating Magus, the second with beating Ozzie, and the third after the Sun Stone quest (although you don't get to see the benefit of this final one until after the Black Omen).

Basically, the Frog King was the Big Bad before Magus, but now he's just licking his wounds on his home turf. You can talk to him, and you can fight him if you move really, really fast. But... try stealing from him.
;)

The changes to Tech learning were intentional. Everybody starts with at least one Tech mastered. Frog should learn his second Tech during the Cathedral, while Chrono, Marle and Lucca should while in 2300 AD. But if the requirements are so high that you aren't learning them until you meet Spekkio, then I overestimated and need to bring them down.

During the scene when Marle "becomes" Queen Leene and her body gets ripped apart there's a glitch wherein you have the option of leaving in the middle of her excruciating experience. I currently have hersuspended, mid-air, in the middle of her being......imploded? by space/time. Seems a bit mean to leave that option in. lol

chrono.source: Unfortunately, each progression in that sequence is activated by your movement and/or contact with the Marle sprite, so that's just how it is. :/

Everyone, thank you so much for your comments and discoveries!!! I'm going to be out of town for the holiday and probably won't be able to check this thread again until Saturday.

Please continue to post about any glitches or things you find questionable. I've already been making edits and will continue to do so when I get back.

Thank you all again and Happy Thanksgiving!

I am going to have to switch to playing this on an Android emulator. I can't find my PSP (which I usually use for emulation below PS2-era). I have played until the return to 1000AD, but obviously my progress is slow since my actual PC video game is low.

Hey, just wanted to check and see how everyone's doing.

A friend and I completed playthroughs on desktop machines using the updated Snes9x and neither of us encountered any of the glitches reported here.

Right now, my working theory is that certain text string and graphical errors are endemic to specific mobile device/emulator combinations. Weeding out all of these potential problems may be impossible, so at least for version 1.0, I'm content to just report this general issue in the readme.

For those of you who have completed the hack... what did you think? If you want to discuss spoilers, please consider private messaging me.

There is no deadline on playtesting, since I never consider my hacks completely done. But I do want to get a 1.0 patch out before Christmas.

Also, please continue to report any bugs or typos.

Thank you again!!!

Just realized I never replied to this.

I really kinda like "Rainbows" because it's water + bow. ... Get it?

Also, I kinda liked that Luminaire and Flare were the ultimate Lightning and Fire techs, simple yet different names, rather than "Thunder" or "Inferno" or something more predictable. And I kinda-sorta felt like "Rainbows" was a good compliment to that. (Also, since there are literally rainbow colors in the graphical effect.)

This is totally subjective and your mileage may vary.

My humblest of apologies for only having reached the prison sequence. I can't seem to find my PSP, which is what I normally use for emulation and have had next to no time for gaming on my PC due to work overtime.

That being said, I would like to coordinate the release a bit so we can make a big announcement for it here as a news post, as well as on Reddit (if you'd like me to - I'm an admin on r/chronotrigger). Totally up to you how you'd want to handle it.

Quick favor:

Can someone go through their ROM and get me about 8-12 snazzy screengrabs of custom content from this? A few of Schala as a new playable, some of the modified events, a pic or two of new locations?

I am still early on in the game but want to make sure we have REALLY attractive screenshots for the front page.

My bad!

Well, that is actually an idea that I floated before I got to work. Like, if you wanted to put Schala in without being able to expand to 8 characters... that's how you'd have to do it.

Right now I've got about 15-20 good screen shots of new content. Is there a particular place you'd like me to send or post them? I can get more as needed.

Saw responses in my inbox from you and Z. I'd really like to release this weekend, either the 22nd or 23rd. Think that's workable? I'm working on the blurb and then you can amend as you see fit so everything meshes with your house style.

Thanks!

What the F...?

I don't suppose you have a save state from right where that happened. If not, I have no idea how I would diagnose it. This is new to me.

Yeah, state save or SRM. I'd like to look into this myself.

I'll check for a save state later today. One thing I also noticed was when using this double tech against Nizbel, it didn't affect its defense as a typical lightning element tech should.

Strange. Wind Slash is set to still do Lightning-element damage.

Oh I think i resolved the first issue with not being able to use it. I have realized after more use that is a proximity-based tech mainly for robo; since Robo was not close enough to the enemies the tech was ready to use, but not in close enough proximity to select anything to attack.

If you can send me the latest patch and a save, I can look into the Lightning element issue.

IT'S GO TIME!  The hack will be released through the Compendium this weekend.

There are always bugs with a release, so if anyone is still playtesting, please continue and keep reporting anything you find. I'm sure I'll need to make some adjustments before the wider release on February 1.

Thanks again to everybody who playtested, to this site for existing (and getting me thinking about this project all the way back in 2005), and for helping me publicize the hack, and ESPECIALLY to Mauron, because I never would've gotten beyond square one without that big lug.

I checked on the techs and Nizbel.

- Wind Sweep, the Crono/Robo dual tech, is not set as lightning elemental.
- Wind Slash, Crono's single tech, is set as lightning elemental, but Nizbel's AI is specifically set to not react to this.

And I clearly can't read. I thought you were talking about Wind Slash.

So I've been playing the game and absolutely love the changes so far. They fit without being distracting or obvious. :D

Anywho. I'm not sure if anyone caught this, or if it's supposed to be this way but after seeing the Day of Lavos record and showing the seeds to Doan, Lucca moves but it has Marle speaking.

I'll check on that... I didn't think I made any changes to that scene, but frankly it's been a long year and I probably don't remember everything I did.
;)

Please post or message me if you find any bugs. Thank you!

So weird bug on my end. When the Ocean Palace is rising from the ocean, then ocean disappears and only the silhouette of the Ocean Palace and the warping ocean is left. Also the full world map of 12000BC went blocky in places after. The map went back to normal after landing on one of the blocky areas though.

Hmmm, what emulator are you using?

The weirdness during the Black Omen event happens with many Chrono Trigger ROM/emulator combinations, even with no hacking, so that's beyond my ability to address.

The map noise is more concerning to me.

That's the first time I've ever seen the black omen glitch. A for the emulator, it is snes9x.

Hey Fauntleroy, congrats on the wider release of the hack - I saw the threads on the various subreddits. I didn't get to playtest as much as I wanted during the initial playtester call but it appears that is all well in hand. Thank you for sending it my way. You've done a good job, I enjoyed the small touches you put into NPC dialogue. Looking forward to playing the final release.

I'm getting an update patch ready tonight.

THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE!
