Title: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: TimePhazer on September 02, 2010, 10:44:18 pm
There are all these people making chrono trigger fan projects and some people even making radical dreamers projects but no one has made a chrono cross project. I'm saying this because i really loved chrono cross and how much storyline there is behind it and i thought if lance can make such cool games like chrono alter and his new work in progress chrono trigger 2 time's eclipse why can't someone make a game about serge. i would do it my self but I'm only a novice with rpg maker.

The biggest problem is probably resources, though it looks like TheMage could contribute some Harle sprites!

I've often considered making a Chrono Cross centered game. Trust me; I'd LOVE to do one. The problem I've run into is the fact that in the end, Serge completely forgets his adventure, making it very difficult to make a direct sequel like you could with a Trigger centered game. Another big thing is that Cross has a very different playing style than Trigger, and that is very difficult to replicate or modify in the RPG Maker engine. And last but not least, like Faust said, there is a massive lack of resources.

If it's any help, I'm making a space age Chrono series.

You could always make a sequel to CC even with Serge not being able to remember his adventure. It's really easy to get around that by starting the story off like that and then having it center around him trying to remember it as he's thrust into events beyond his control.

The graphics are deffinately a big problem. Not only are there limited resources, RPG maker 2003 can only handle so much. The 3Dish aspect of Chrono cross would have to be toned down for it to be made in rpg maker 2003. For example here are some maps and sprites i've done:

I really like the El Nido over world map (guardia castle should say Termina XD) but the other two maps - Kid doesnt seem to fit with the background. In order to do a chrono cross sequel in rpg maker the graphics would have to be toned down, and re-made and most people don't want to do that. For instance all the players would have to be sprited like Kid is, and all the area's made with lower graphics.

Of course a cross sequel fan game could be made in another engine, but I cant think of one. Tell you what if someone thinks of a plot and is serious about it, i'll do the graphics, as long as they write the story :D

Like I said in my first post I'm only a novice with rpg maker 2003 but i might be able to contribute to the storyline. if we get an actual team behind this it might happen. I'm gonna go pull out chrono cross right now for some inspiration  and themage that world map looks great!

xp or VX could work, though we'd have to have someone with knowledge of the script language. for example the xp battles aren't like chrono trigger, it just shows a characters picture instead of ur character moving around, (however this can be changed due to scripts) I think the language is java hmm.

Thanks,  the world map is pretty exciting, its the other maps i'm not too fond of. A fan game could be done, but we will need some helping hands. You provide the story i'll see what my skills (or lack their of) in rpg maker can do!

The good side for RMXP or VX spriting is they both support PNG32, 24bit RGB plus an alpha channel. So you can even render your 3d models and the anti-aliasing effect is still there.

oh! That deffinately is a plus! I don't have any cross models though. . . however i'm sure there easy to find? (maybe?) I cooould just sprite them though.

The fact that RMVX/XP uses Ruby makes the chance of me using it debatable. Ruby has slow memory management, but I crave the customization.

first things first we need a name for the game
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: TheMage on September 04, 2010, 10:41:47 pm
Don't worry I have half the name figured out!!!!

Chrono ________

^_^

Well, all joking aside, the chrono trigger and the chrono cross are actually phsyical objects, so the name of the fan made sequel could follow the tradition, or be something else entirely.

So I've discovered I royally suck at 3D characters! I can sprite 2D ones just fine but 3Dish - well - it was bad, but I played with RPG maker XP lookie:

I've seen that engine before.

Honestly, what I would do, is convert chipsets from other games into something that could be used to create a 2D version of El Nido. It would work better in the long run.

Uhh I made it in rpg maker xp, but I downloaded a chrono trigger CMS from a site. It's pretty nifty! I just threw it in the script and it worked.

:D I know it's great! I didn't create the program that makes it look like that, but whoever did is awesome!

It would. To make a chrono cross fan game it'd be easier to downgrade the graphics. Besides, if we did a 3D game it'd probably get a C&D like chrono resurrection :(

However fan games in rpg maker 2003 (xp and VX) havent been touched, so if a cross fan game were to be created, it'd be best to do it all with 2D graphics.

Just a bit. :p

Believe it or not, when CT2 was in planning stages, I was testing a CT theme in RPG Maker XP for a while.

I can't get the ruby coding down. D:

I have no idea how to do coding >.>

The base of my knowldge is this

 text

and I think thats java lmao for web design.

I started a map or two in rpg maker xp, but I like rpg maker 2003 better because of the battle system. I think the one in xp is so stupid. I downloaded a script to change it to the one like in rpg maker 2003, so thats a plus, but I wont be able to write one myself for some time
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: Lance VII on September 06, 2010, 01:15:41 am
The battle system will be a bitch. Well, maybe not... I can code some elements.
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: TheMage on September 06, 2010, 01:21:15 am
Elements will be tricksy....at least the battles dont have to be on map like in chrono trigger! I looked everywhere for a script that let you have a battle on the map and I finally found one, and proceeded to accidently lose it and havent found it since >_> at least you know how to do some code :D

best hopes to it!

Well, if it's going to be a Chrono Cross game, we should keep the Chrono Cross title. I think a subtitle would keep it in perspective.

I guess I could draft up a plot sometime this week.

I'm not dead sure how relevant it will be to the main storyline, but I'll try.

Unless someone else has a plot.
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: TheMage on September 07, 2010, 12:59:59 am
My idea of a plot so far is 'whatever happens, it's belthasar's fault' lol. Cross ended with so many unanswered questions, such as, which dimension was kept, or was it a mixture where the best of both worlds came to be. (the ideal time line)

this page could certaintly help:

in my opinion the one where time goes back to when serge is born and this time schala and FATE don't interfere at all would be the most logical timeline.

another thing we got to consider is if serge is gonna be silent in this game or not. if so we gotta shape his personality because we dont know what serge is like. we dont know if he is cocky, cowardly, brave, bold or whatever

Were not quite sure where we stand. Lance already has a bunch of projects lined up after CT 2 and we dont want to spread ourselves to thin, or run out of plot ideas. Overture Studios has a lot of fan games in the workings, and so far any ideas for a cross sequel come up in a chrono break plan. So in short, we need a writer. Maybe make this project seperate from the overture plots. Right now, we really don't know. XD

That's a toughy, your familiar with the RPG maker 2003, but XP could probably present things that 2003 cant, maybe double techs/ tripple techs for instance.

(An annoying problem with XP is the battle system, but there are scripts to 'fix' that.)

There's always Rpg maker VX, but I know nooothing about that one.

But its the code that drives me nuts XD.
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: utunnels on September 21, 2010, 08:44:45 pm
VX has a funny limit -- you have only 1 tileset for all of your maps. It also has some nice feature (boat, airship logic, for instance).
Though you can solve that problem by using pre-rendered background picture.
Title: Re: Chrono Cross Fan game
Post by: Lance VII on September 22, 2010, 01:34:59 am
VX has some pretty stupid charset limitations. That's why I hate it.

XP might be possible, but it needs a damn Airship option. And a boat. I mean... fuck. Those are essentials to RPG making.

I had no idea  it didn't have an airship or a boat option thats ridiculous! Every good rpg has one or the other, or both XD. There's probably a script for inserting a ship/aircraft, but thats so stupid!

Hence, why I'm not a fan of XP.

Actually, the biggest possibly for an Engine is RPG Maker 2003 Power Mode that adds a scripting system, I believe.

Tried some sprites.
Hmm, the 14 framed version and 13 framed version have a slight 'jump' when the last and first frame meets.
Perhaps that is because the walking is too smooth, so switching to 'idle' pose looks so sudden.
The 7 framed version looks better, though not smooth enough.

I know some RGSS2 (VX's scripting language), and I could probably pick up some RGSS (XP's scripting language).

Besides utunnels providing kickass graphics no other work has been done and I currently have no idea where this project stands :( Overture Studios is focusing on Chrono Trigger Prelude to a dream and Chrono Shift, along with Chrono VI after that and this project never fully got organized on who was going to do what or even what the story was going to be about. So I guess its on hiatus- I dont even think it has a leader :o And it still needs a writer - it needs people XD

Reviving the topic ...
I would just like to say that I also love the Chrono Cross game, and would like to participate in this project, perhaps in the development part of writing history.
